Nuke it again, just to be sure

I despise Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, so I'm mostly amused by the news that Amazon is blackwashing Perrin and Nynaeve:
Amazon’s upcoming Wheel of Time series will race swap Egwene, Perrin, and Nynaeve.

Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins confirmed casting announcements for the upcoming Amazon adaptation. They cast Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve, and Madeleine Madden as Egwene Al’Vere. They also cast Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, and Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon.
I am a little disappointed by the casting of Rand al'Thor, however. Josha Stradowski's face isn't anywhere nearly punchable enough.

I was a fan, but the fact that I haven't gone back to reread it in 10 years - and I never read the final book - leaves me with little outrage to muster.

Shit like this used to be "well, they just changed that one thing", but now it means "they changed so much it even included shit like this".

I'm glad I can remember an era when adaptations were only shitty because the writers didn't care, instead of shitty because they actively wanted to shit on the fanbase.

I never heard about the graphic novel series back when it was being written - decided to pick up copies of the lot before they get memory-holed. Even if it's not as good as I remember it doesn't deserve what Amazon is going to do to it.

My wife was talking the other day about how they take old shows or stories and put women in men's roles. Blacks instead of the original white person. Queers instead of straight people ... and so on.

We wondered why they don't just write NEW material and create new story lines.

Our final answer is that they can not. Just can't do it.

"will race swap Egwene"

Could have predicted this a mile off. It's such a buttboi series. Of course they'd make Dominant Female #3: Childhood "Friend" Edition black.

Blogger Paulito August 18, 2019 5:51 PM

What's really funny is that Jordan wrote in at least two countries of black people, Tear and Seanchan. I bet they'll accidentally race-swap characters who were black in the books to white and never even know it.

What Hollywood is telling us when they black or brown wash traditional, iconic White characters is because black/brown people don't have their own.

As Jesse Lee Peterson once said "brown people don't create. They just use what's already there."

How is it "race swap"? It's always from "white" to "Whatever" or occasionally "Whatever" to "Whatever". It's almost never from "Whatever" to "white".

Blogger Azure Amaranthine August 18, 2019 6:09 PM

Actually come to think of it, they just made every single one of the most dominant characters in the story black, with the sole exception of dominant female #1: sensei.

Blogger Riejun August 18, 2019 6:09 PM

I stopped reading the books at 7 or 8... Most of the characters were not sympathetic and unlikable. Plus Jordan was similar to Martin in that he kept adding more characters and plot lines, seldom wrapping anything up. Reading that many of the books shows I had 1) too much spare time in college/Army and 2) poor taste in my selection of reading material.

The excuse for race swapping, on the surface, is to be more inclusive and try to make these shows more appealing to non-whites... The real reason is to destroy as much of Western culture (even bad culture) as possible... If Games of Thrones were started now, there would be significant race swapping in it as well. Nothing touched by the globohomo elites is safe.

Subversion is very important tactic to the Left. The entire point of infiltrating all these institutions, companies, literary and artistic genres, all the various cultural forms, is to subvert them. All will be suborned for the cause of social justice. That is their way, and it's why, as our SDL points out, once they achieve control of anything they abandon its core purpose and make a skin suit out of it.

I'm a fan of the series. But I agree with you about some of the annoying parts. Nynaeve was such a pain in the ass. But Perrin was one of the good characters. Just an old fashioned tough guy.

I get why Rand annoys you. Written as being basically mentally ill, he does exude a fair bit of gamma.

At this stage I couldn't care less about screen adaptions done by any part of Hollywood of any source material. They hate the source material, they hate the people who like it and they will use every single one of their adaptions to preach their message.

I'll skip this one.

Blogger Zaklog the Great August 18, 2019 6:37 PM

Of course, by then, anyone who actually cared has vacated the space because what made whatever it is entertaining has been destroyed.

I'm actually starting to view this as a positive force: Any author or franchise willing to cuck like this has stopped caring and is already creatively bankrupt.

The only way to stop them beating the already-dead horse is for maggots and other scavengers to eat it.

Blogger Stilicho August 18, 2019 6:53 PM

It's a shame really. There was a good story to tell in there, but Jordan was easily distracted, there was effectively no editing, and few characters progressed aside from Mat Cauthon, and when they did, it was often in a way that was out of character. Oh, and the incessant whining by ALThor.

Sanderson did a good job of wrapping it up. I think he could probably get a good product if he re-wrote the whole thing and cut it at least in half.

As for the diversification of the adaptation...they found a way to make it more unwatchable. They'll introduce lots of gay and tranny. Might even add in some furries and ewoks before they're done.

This Josha person looks like a male model, which is to say twink with some muscle mass. Because Hollywood caters to homo taste, which borders on female taste when women have been sufficiently programmed.

One sees plenty of punchable faces on t.v., but they're not likely to appear on the protagonist. Unless they're deliberately trying to turn you off, which isn't likely in a big fantasy project.

Their reasoning for this is likely 2-fold. The first and primary reason is virtue signaling to other woke-whites. That only goes so far, because most aren't that woke.

The 2nd reason is that Black folks won't watch or buy any products without Black people in them. All the advertising research they've done over the last several decades demonstrate that unless Black people see one of their own in something, they will assume isn't for them. Hence why despite being only 13% of the population, they're all over the media and advertising. They're a very solipsistic people.

Blogger nswhorse August 18, 2019 9:31 PM

@ar10308

In the 3rd episode of Molyneux's California series, he interviews a homeless activist from Skid Row. The gentleman, completely unprompted by Stefan, at one point launched into a lengthy statement of your second point, and not just limited to entertainment. Blacks view anything without a visual black presence as whitey exercising his continued rule. It goes without saying they see no distinction between whitey and (((whitey))).

The only thing to conclude from this is, as Vox has tirelessly pointed out, they are a separate nation, who desire to be separate, and have all positions of power and influence filled by their own. In a sane world, this reality would be acknowledged and there could be peaceful separation. Not in clown world, where certain parties need racial tension to aid their agenda.

That makes no damn sense! Aside from Rand they where all supposed to be of the same genetic stock. Perrin looks like an anemic troll instead of a wolf-touched giant, Nynaeve is going to break into a reggae song as she crushes up some "herbs" and is Egwene really supposed to rise to the Amyrlin Seat and look down her piggy little nose at the gathered Aes Sedai? I gave up, being too tired of wading through 500 pages of prose without anything ever happening beyond a 2 page retardus ex machina at the end.

Blogger justaguy August 18, 2019 11:29 PM

I thought that the first two books were okay. I liked the world building, and for 1990 when #1 came out, it was a cut above the rest. I like to see how authors create new worlds and make basic themes different with their creations. However, as noted above, the author continually created new characters and plots and much like Martin, had issues resolving everything and getting to real development of the characters. I note the VD comments on this by authors often-- probably because he does such a good job at keeping the number of main characters small and actually grows them beyond stereotypes. (next book soon? please). I wish VD or one of his other authors would give novel writing classes-- most of the major publishing house authors could use them.

I think that I bought some of the later WOT books on the bargain racks for 99c just to see where the story went-- but I couldn't take it and didn't finish. Too many other books by better authors.

I see some people on this thread talking about the genre fantasy.

For some reason I was thinking about a modern fantasy tale that might win one a major prize. I think I have one. Unfortunately I am not well enough to start writing this so I toss it out for others to consider.

Imagine a modern city where blacks go to live, Atlanta for example, and they make the f'ing city WORK. Yes, a black city that is not a shit hole! Intact families. Churches everywhere. People are safe when they go for a walk.

Now that would be a real fantasy.

So they took a series were identity and the ramifications of racially mediated injustice in history were central themes, and proceeded to write identity out of the series, in order to address issues of identity and historical injustice mediated by race?

I mean, I ended up hating the series, but the historical injustices suffered by particular people-groups is a gigantic chunk of what the story is ABOUT. Would they race-swap black characters from a black author in a story where historical injustice and suppression of identity were central themes?

Actually, they probably would. They are shit people.

Is it a huge sin to answer myself? $52, @54, and @55 reminded me to add: sports teams and their insanely lopsided race numbers and maybe pay scales; and "proportional" representation in govt and corporate jobs, that ended up with Atlanta having beyond lopsided imbalances.

How about govt set-asides and preferential treatment? E.g., Fulton County GA census figures put the population at 48 percent white and 45 percent black, but 83 percent of the county government's 5,500 employees are black and 14 percent are white.
https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/racial-mix-fulton-workforce-way-off-from-county-population/DtCDjnShp22mif8GVbVfsL/

Since the Left have been hounding, disparaging, and suing us about "cultural appropriation," maybe we can return the favor / use their own rhetoric against them?

Job, matriculation, promotion disparities and programs... and "celebratory months" for Hispanic, black, India, everyone but Whites...

Authors seem not to trust that their readers will understand them, so all details require over-explanation. Given the state of contemporary education, I can sympathize with the urge.

The last 3 books were quite good. Too bad you had to slog through the previous 4 to 5 books to get to the finale.

Nynaeve was the most repulsive character in the series. I guess the people casting can't read and didn't notice that a number of the key players are already dark colored in skin, especially the Daughter of the Nine Moons? And are they really going to allow Rand to woo 3 different white women? At least with the Min character they will have a short haired feminist who wear's mens clothing in a world of dresses.

It was a relief when Sanderson took over the series and Rand quit whining. During a long commute, I started listening to the series instead of reading it. Much less annoying that way.

Book 1 had the then still mandatory Tolkien homage/imitation but set up an interesting world. #2 slow but finished big. 3,4,5 somewhat too long but felt like really going some where. 6 is where I started really thinking WTF is RJ doing adding all this new crap when should be heaidng into the climax of the series?

I share the view of most here - verbose and disappointing fantasy books. I picked up volume 1 enroute to the airport and did enjoy it, but quit after 5 or 6 (can't even remember). I don't get disappointed by remakes because I don't watch tv or movies, but Vox's (and others') point about the cultural degradation is apt. Neither Negroes nor Jews have any history upon which to build great fantasy worlds, because only Whites had/have that drive to explore and conquer their world and all good fantasy is built on the foundation of Western experience. Iceland sagas and The Mabinogion versus Anansi tales, anyone? That's why they appropriate and subvert everything White, because - like Satan - they cannot create, they can only copy and degrade and destroy.

The pivot to outrage on this will be when they point out that Netflix/Amazon are displaying unconscious bias in forcing black actors into fantasy roles - ie, blacks can be heroes in an alternate reality while white people get to be heros in the real world. The shows will get boycotted by both sides
and nothing will ever be enough.

Far better just to make the best show you can and forget everything else, which is why I'm looking forward to Rebel's Run
