Bowties on the historical battlefield

Conservatives have always been spineless and without principle:

It may be inferred again that the present movement for women’s rights will certainly prevail from the history of its only opponent, Northern conservatism. This is a party which never conserves anything. Its history has been that it demurs to each aggression of the progressive party, and aims to save its credit by a respectable amount of growling, but always acquiesces at last in the innovation.

What was the resisted novelty of yesterday is today one of the accepted principles of conservatism; it is now conservative only in affecting to resist the next innovation, which will tomorrow be forced upon its timidity and will be succeeded by some third revolution; to be denounced and then adopted in its turn. American conservatism is merely the shadow that follows Radicalism as it moves forward towards perdition. It remains behind it, but never retards it, and always advances near its leader. This pretended salt bath utterly lost its savor: wherewith shall it be salted?

Its impotency is not hard, indeed, to explain. It is worthless because it is the conservatism of expediency only, and not of sturdy principle. It intends to risk nothing serious for the sake of the truth, and has no idea of being guilty of the folly of martyrdom. It always, when about to enter a protest, very blandly informs the wild beast whose path it essays to stop, that its “bark is worse than its bite,” and that it only means to save its manners by enacting its decent role of resistance. The only practical purpose which it now subserves in American politics is to give enough exercise to Radicalism to keep it “in wind,” and to prevent its becoming pursy and lazy from having nothing to whip.

No doubt, after a few years, when women’s suffrage shall have become an accomplished fact, conservatism will tacitly admit it into its creed, and thenceforward plume itself upon its wise firmness in opposing with similar weapons the extreme of baby suffrage; and when that too shall have been won, it will be heard declaring that the integrity of the American Constitution requires at least the refusal of suffrage to asses. There it will assume, with great dignity, its final position.
- Robert Lewis Dabney, 1871

Whenever someone is issuing dire warnings about how the Left will not like the consequences of their latest political monstrosity, you can be sure that a conservative is speaking, just as you can be certain that he will furiously denounce and disavow anyone who actually attempts to deliver those consequences.

1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

4 One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

5 The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

6 The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

7 All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

8 All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Sorry for the long copy and paste- but wow. That could have been written this morning.
Thank You. An historical example of just what conservatism has been through the last 150 years is just what I have been wishing for. I have family that desperately need this type of example, and clarity of thought.

Is it not in the end about people? Sure there is propaganda, there are many kind of ways to pressure people to accept things, normalizing abhorrent in long enough time chunk.
But in the end it is about people - people change and it is inevitable, after all they are not stone statues and it is much more easy to change for worse then for better.

yeah, i had that whole Dabney piece posted up. it was not merely brutal in it's evaluation of 'conservatives', it is remarkable in his foresight and predictions of the coming society.

about the only part of the current societal degeneration that he missed was the transgender movement. which, given that they didn't even have effective antibiotics in the 1800s, he can be forgiven for not predicting.

Cons save their energy for attacks on fellow conservatives who step out of line. Anyone who has criticized Reagan, Bush, or Trump, or questioned the Holycaust™, in the presence of conservatives has experienced this.

Discussions of Robert Lewis Dabney volume 3
https://archive.org/details/DiscussionsOfRobertLewisDabneyVol.3Philosophical

But nearly all public men and divines declare that the State schools are the glory of America, that they are a finality, and in no event to be surrendered. And we have seen that their complete secularization is logically inevitable. Christians must prepare themselves then, for the following results: All prayers, catechisms, and Bibles will ultimately be driven out of the schools . . . Humanity always finds out, sooner or later, that it cannot get on without a religion, and it will take a false one in preference to none. Infidelity and practical ungodliness will become increasingly prevalent among Protestant youth, and our churches will have a more arduous contest for growth if not for existence.

Dabney is definitely worth reading.

Blogger Welsh Woodsman September 29, 2019 1:41 PM

Dabney was extremely prescient...bringing much of what he noticed to its logical conclusion.
He even predicted "Diversity + Proximity = War ". , almost spelling it out that succinctly.
He writes ".....can prevent that instinctive antipathy of race, which, history shows, always arises between opposite races in proximity"

Blogger Wilkes Marprelate September 29, 2019 1:46 PM

Dabney has been one of the most vilified characters of 19th Century American history, because he chose the wrong side during the War Between the States, he wrote a book defending (in principle) the idea that slavery had a certain legitimacy (i.e., had to follow Biblical norms), for blaming the North for importing slaves while criticizing the South for owning them, and (as this quote here demonstrates) for foreseeing a lot of the radicalism that was to come (I guess this one Bible lawyer, since he was a Presbyterian minister and theologian, had some validity to him? ;)).

Blogger Wilkes Marprelate September 29, 2019 1:50 PM

and if you did learn of him at all, he would have been presented as an evil, racist, slave supporting bigoted white supremacist (with a side order of misogyny, homophobia, and proto-Fascism ;)).

@30
I think it was Bob Dole that said something along the lines of, liberals want to grow the government going at 70MPH, conservaties at 50MPH.

Read what conservatives were against during FDR and see how many of those issues conservatives oppose today, hence, my constant refrain that conservatives are the liberals of 35 years ago.

G.K. Cheserton also had conservatism pegged.

I was trying to find a half-remembered quote by Lord Salisbury & instead found this one that appears appropriate:

"...the central doctrine of Conservatism, that it is better to endure almost any political evil than to risk a breach of the historic continuity of government."

This is the one I was actually looking for, though I misremembered it. Replace "English" with "Conservative" and it seems depressingly accurate WRT conservative opposition towards "progress":

"English policy is to float lazily downstream, occasionally putting out a diplomatic boat-hook to avoid collisions."

He had some good insights as regards equality, trusting experts and such though.

In 2150, the left will be passing a law, oops, I mean arguing a Supreme Court case, that the 14th Amendment requires the Court make up an impromptu law criminalizing men's failure to get an erection when observing the gay cross-dressing trans-dancer pop out of his child's gov't-ordered birthday cake (which has also been deemed a 14th Amendment Constitutional right).

Conservatives will be like: "We all know it's a civil right for all children to have a gay cross-dressing trans pop out of their birthday cakes, but we're crossing a line when we force the fathers to get an erection over it."

For the sake of humanity's future, conservatism can't die fast enough.

Expedience is the word for it.
Less than 1% can even understand the British pick n mix constitution.

Recently some barristers were trying to tell me that the constitution was all about "human rights" (invented 5 minutes ago).

The best way to view it is as a series of unfortunate events where people sought to limit the power of the crown.

They don't want to be associated with us, and I certainly don't want to be associated with them. They have no brand worth bothering to take away, and no platform any self-respecting man could support.
