Cameras in the can

Apparently there are cameras in airplane bathrooms. What is wrong with these people?
A Southwest Airlines flight attendant says two pilots live streamed video from a hidden camera in a commercial airliner's lavatory to an iPad in the cockpit, a lawsuit says. The alleged incident happened February 27, 2017, while Renee Steinaker was working on Flight 1088 from Pittsburgh to Phoenix, according to the complaint that Steinaker and her husband, David Steinaker, filed against the airline and the pilots.

About two and a half hours into the flight, Capt. Terry Graham asked for a flight attendant to come to the cockpit so that he could leave to use the restroom, the complaint says. Airline policy requires that two crew members are in the cockpit at all times, the complaint says.

After Steinaker arrived and Graham left, Steinaker spotted an iPad in the plane's cockpit that appeared to be streaming live video of the pilot inside an airplane lavatory, the lawsuit said. When the flight attendant asked the co-pilot, Ryan Russell, if the iPad was streaming video from the lavatory, he said the camera was part of a "new security and top secret security measure that had been installed in the lavatories of all Southwest Airlines' 737-800 planes," the document alleges.
"Southwest does not place cameras in the lavatories of our aircraft." That's the official Southwest line and it might even be true. But even if it is true, that doesn't mean that someone else, such as a federal agency, doesn't put them there.

Uh...uh...it is for your safety and security, Vox. Cross my heart. Really.

There has been a three year break in new terrorist attacks and new reactive security measures. Interesting, yes?

Deep state pervs, most likely.

"The telescreen recieved and transmitted simultaneously. Any sound Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by it; moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever the wanted to. You had to live- did live, from habit that became instinct- in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.

Anti-shoe bomber tech. Not that the pilots will actually prevent a bombing with this.

let's suppose the GOVERNMENT is placing these cameras.

what's the probability that they're feeding unencrypted video to a civvie Ipad?

or is it more likely that the pilot and co are a pair of pervs?

The problem with the Perve theory is installation. Im not sure how pilot scheduling works, but I doubt that they are always flying the same plane. Seems like a bit of work for the liability.

Going on absolutely zero evidence, my assumption is that since being a commercial pilot on a long haul flight is basically 10 minutes of work at the start and end with hours of boredom in-between on most flights, pilots will find ways to amuse themselves. And since it is illegal to hire pretty flight attendants, they started perving on the passengers.

TSA - Toliet Safety Administration.

South Park called it years ago.

Ain't that the truth. "Pleasant" seems to be increasingly disqualifying as well.

I suppose the bathroom could be the staging area for some kind of attack, where you pull your weapon out from your underwear or assemble it or whatever. Given the cramped space in those bathrooms, it would be hard to come up with something erotic for people of normal tendencies. More like naughty boy stuff, a deliberate intrusion on privacy. I would think the government would be the more likely source for this sort of thing, than a free lance private citizen.

I used to build these camera systems and there was no housing for any lavatory camera. Things do not just get implanted into aircraft without proper housings and mountings, wiring harnesses, etc.

Look up how many of these cases there are. For yearsand years, a determined wacko could get components to do this. In a famous case, a neighbor installed a whole system before his neighbors moved it. There have been cases in various coffee houses and in retail store dressing rooms too.

Times have changed...a lot.

A salvaged laptop camera is tiny. Easy to hide. And damn near free.

These days when I check into a hotel, the first thing I do is search the corners of the room. Then the seams where the walls meet.

Again, these things are tiny and don't look like cameras at all.

When I made my own home video surveillance set. One of the problems I had to solve was making the cameras actually look like cameras. I eventually bought the cases from Amazon.

a - Steinaker is hardly the only stewardess on the flight, she's just the one who happened to notice the flagrantly violating OpSec I-pad. therefore, Steinaker's personal appearance is hardly relevant. also, bathroom pervs ( such as Chuck Berry ) seem to be more concerned with getting away with doing something transgressive rather than vetting the personal appearance of the women they're spying on.

b - i didn't make a comprehensive list of the alternatives, nor did i assert that anything was correct. i'm just asking questions. as a fer instance, maybe all of the pilots DO have I-pads equipped with a top secret decryption app so they can view the remote video feed. or, it's the government so they may be this stupid, maybe they are broadcasting raw video with nothing more than a network passkey necessary to view it.

How much perving can you do in an airline restroom? They are half the size of the old phone booths.

It depends on if the Mile High Club is real or myth.

Honestly, I've never seen how it's physically possible but some people will do ANYTHING out of pride.

Why would anyone assume that there would not be cameras on a sensitive TSA controlled plane? Heck, if they are going to watch, I am eating the habinaro hot wings to give them something to see.

the Mile High Club doesn't have to occur on a commercial flight

Wondering now if I've ever transgressed on a long haul flight. They can be lonely, isolating places. The xanax and red wine infused mind can wander many uninhibited paths. It's possible I may've spanked myself out of the presidential race. Hope not.
