That's NOT a defense

If your argument that the science is wrong and women are too funny relies upon Sarah Silverman, then you've got no chance at all:
We then calculated sex differences on the combined sample and found that men were, overall, rated as funnier than women. How big was the difference? In statistical technical terms, the effect size was 0.32, or roughly one-third of the standard deviation. In plain English, this means that 63 percent of men score above the mean humor ability of women. This is considered a small to medium difference.

We also looked for a long list of possible confounding variables that might explain the difference. The countries where the data come from, the sex of the authors doing the research, age of participants, whether there were more men or women judging the humor—none of it made a difference in our analysis.

What does it all mean? It means that to the best of our knowledge, on average, men appear to have higher humor production ability than women. Note that I emphasized the word average because the study does not mean, as Christopher Hitchens famously proclaimed, that women are not funny. The fact that men, on average, appear to be funnier than women, does not imply that every single man is funnier than every single woman. There are many great female comedians such as Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Ali Wong and historically, Lucille Ball, Joan Rivers, and many, many more. All these great comedians are funnier than 99.9 percent of all men.
As a general rule, men perform for women rather than the reverse. So it should hardly be surprising, or controversial, that the average man's ability to do so is considerably more honed than the average woman's.

Needless to say, female comedians are taking it well.

“I really think it’s unnecessary to do this study,” Marina Bye, a female comedian, told BBC. “They could have done something progressive.”

Umm, well ackshually women are technically funnier than men because of some statistical trickery with a tiny sample size.
This is a very compelling argument. Now we are finally allowed to laugh at women. The only reason we weren't laughing was because our internalized misogyny.

Having settled the man-woman question, how about they study the Jew-Goy question of who's funnier, then the black-white question.

Given that I see conversational/verbal presentation skill as analogous to both mate-seeking and the movement of a snake-charmer or the light on an anglerfish, I assume those who are prone to con-artist-style predation (or parasitism) would also average better comedians.

In short, women's comedy survives on golf clap humor. People who go to see them, clap rather than laugh because they said soemthing disgusting about President Trump.

In an article about how women aren't as funny as men, the author has to make the very elementary comment that populations aren't individual samples because women just really have a tough time with math.

I submit that there is a biological/evolutionary psychology reason why men are funnier than women.
Males are much more risk takers then women.
Comedy is about doing the unconventional, the non routine. Comedy will be more expressed in the gender that takes more risks.
Also, woman like a funny guy. Women are responding to that trait like they respond to traditional traits of masculinity, such as good physique and good income.

Blogger David Ray Milton October 31, 2019 9:32 AM

As a rule, women are not funny. Women are drawn to equality (family life) and that has no place in comedy. As I tried to explain to a very unfunny women, “Comedy always comes at someone’s expense.” Women don’t want that and therefore cannot be funny. It’s because men are comfortable with competition and hierarchies that enables to be funny. Shit-talking is the basis of humor and that is male-domain. When women shit-talk, she by default becomes a rug-muncher. Unless she is humiliating a gamma. Correction: Women can only be funny when verbally castrating gammas.

As far as the Goy vs Jew and Black vs White comparison... I was thinking about this the other day. I think the reason the funniest comedians of late are all black (Murphy, Chapelle, Hart, Pryor) are because there are no limits on their subject material. They can crack on whatever the hell they want to, although this appears to be diminishing as Hart and Chapelle can both attest to with gay jokes. White comedians, on the other hand, have 75% of their potential material prohibited from the outset. They have to be verrry creative to be funny when they’re restrained to knock-knock jokes.

The funniest demographic on average IMO is Mexicans. For all of their faults, the beaners seem born with an ability to riff and crack jokes. Hell, when your nicknames for your friends are fatty or baldy, it can only get better from there.

Blogger Silent Draco October 31, 2019 9:35 AM

Good points. The best comediennes look like their work comes from male-female teams, where the man is either writing or directing the flow of the stories, while the woman reacts and responds to the lines. Without the man there, it's about a funny as a goldfish without its bowl.

First of all, Lucille Ball has a lot more than all those other women combined. I especially loved the episode of I Love Lucy where she hide the body under the bed to buy some time so the PI could clear his name.

Blogger Johnny October 31, 2019 10:08 AM

“I really think it’s unnecessary to do this study,”... My thoughts exactly. What do you know, men and women are not identical. A problem that needs fixing?

Men take "kidding" or ill treatment a lot better than women, not only on a personal level, but with audiences as well. As a performer, making fun of women is apt to get you in trouble in a hurry. If you think of it, they make fun of women covertly by having a man with female tendencies, and then they have fun with him. Laurel and Hardy, Laurel was the wife stand in. Same thing with the Odd Couple. Felix was the women, Oscar the man.

Or a man in drag who can have fun with the female role.

Blogger Heian-kyo Dreams October 31, 2019 10:11 AM

Are these women able to perform the material they are provided? YES.
Are they able to to come up with their own material that packs theatres and arenas?

Its already been said but I'll say it again. Men are required to impress women so they are naturally better at understanding what Others find humorous, women understand how to use their breasts and ass to entice and seduce men.

@Better

This is true across the board. The feminine is receptive/appreciative, the masculine is aggressive/giving

Generally speaking. Always exceptions especially with language and local custom.

In cased languages, all nouns have either a feminine form, masculine form, or in some cases a neuter form. In French, the article “la” denotes a feminine noun. I recall a French ad for Axe body spray from sometime in the early 2000s, where a young guy wearing Axe leaves his house, and is suddenly attacked by une brouette when he walks by a garden. The ad was banned in Europe, and many Americans didn’t know why it was so bad. But then they learned that “feminine” nouns in cased languages are “feminine” because they are usually something receptive, hollow, they hold and contain, and are generally passive or only put into action until used.

Well that got feminist danders up right quickly! How dare Germanic and Romance languages notice! Thank the stars for English and its neutral nouns!

As a more clear example: Sarah Silverman sounds like every male New York stand-up comic who also can't get a laugh unless he talks about the hair on his ass or whatever.

The 1st season of Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars had no women in it. He totally did not realize it. Then certain people complained. Silverman may have been the first on the show, or close to it. Anyway, and Seinfeld doesn’t even realize this, he’s developed this weird fake laugh where he slaps the dashboard with his hand slowly and makes a face like he’s laughing his head off, but no sound comes out of his mouth. Often accompanied by saying “that’s hilarious.” Slap slap.

Lucy was a lot funnier than most female comedians, but the thing worth noting about her comedy is that she played the wiseacre wife so many modern sit-coms have, but she played it as an ultimately loving wife. Her comedy was often about her efforts to hide her own screwups from her husband, and the chaos she would bring to normal activities by thinking she (her character) could do something way outside (her character's) expertise.

Could she even do that routine today?

Right. Women can be great comedic ACTORS. Carol Burnett is top of the list.

Seinfeld gets dissed often on this blog (and by others) with some justification, but Julia Louis Dreyfus is great comedic actress.

Someone mentioned Comedians in Cars, at Jerry did an episode with Julia.

Julia mentioned the year she was pregnant, and how they tried to hide it while they were filming the show, and Jerry mentioned they all discussed doing a whole series of episodes with the theme,"The year Elaine got fat."

Julia said that she cried when they first mentioned it to her. Jerry replied, "Well, it was a good idea."

The funniest thing Sara Silverman ever did was the first scene in way of the gun. Cracks me up every time I watch it, especially after I found out the punch wasn't pulled.

"(((Shoshana.))) She certainly has that archetypal (((Ferengi))) face."

Reaching deep on that one. Always chaotic evil. Even the cubists were better.

" She meant they could have lied. Right?"

Yes, but I don't think even she was consciously aware of the lie. Subconsciously? Definitely.

Blogger Fergus October 31, 2019 4:10 PM

Sarah Silverman is the antithesis of what a lady should be, possesses zero virtues, and has all the appeal of a dish of rotten tripe.

Blogger Dark glasses Woody October 31, 2019 4:41 PM

They are not as funny as men, though they are very funny as men.

The 2 minute hate will replaced by 2 minute laugh. If you don't laugh at a feminist talking about sex, how bad men are, and BBC, you are deemed suspicious.

Probably already happens at the real B.B.C.

One of the funniest people I know is a woman. It happens. She's very feminine, too, comes off as an airhead ditz quite naturally. But her take on things and her turns of phrase are beautifully, naturally, absolutely zonked. She reminds me of Yogi Berra, where when she says something we say, "Wait. What??" It's strangely perfect. And like with Yogi I can't tell if it's a conscious thing going on or something naturally sublime under the hood.

This "debate" brings out two of the funniest female affectations: mewling about "the male ego" in desperate attempts to assuage their own chafed ego that they pretend are wholly impervious to any criticism, and suddenly arguing that the "innate" traits" that supposedly make women better at everything are suddenly "imposed by patriarchy" when it is demonstrated that they aren't.

By the way somethin', the reason some men are put off by "funny women" is that the chosen mode of humor for fags and women is snark, and that's barely tolerable in small doses.

I always loved listening to Burns and Allen. More often than not, I'd laugh till I cried.

Maybe someone with a greater knowledge of entertainment history could chime in- but my impression of stand-up comedy was that it was always more of a Northeastern urban city center cultural thing that was then distributed dutifully to other city centers.

Not especially liking urban city center views, particularly Northeastern ones, I always found the whole standup comedy routine to be not especially funny, with some exceptions among the funniest of men. I went to a comedy club once and didn’t enjoy it at all. Felt like I was just listening to insecure boys whine like women.

Not to say that stand-up comedy is not funny objectively but that it’s just a cultural thing that non-city, non-northern sensibilities get more annoyed with than amused by. On the other hand, comedic acting and performances are more what I’m used to, where I guess there are a respectable though not predominant presence of women.

I still think Harold Lloyd is hysterically amusing and admire the huge risks he took when making these films on narrow escapes as he did those stunts himself. Look them up. Likewise the Laurel and Hardy films cheer me up.

First of all, Ann Coulter is funny.

Funny Comedic Actresses: Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Eve Arden. JL Dreyfus.

Good Female Comics: Gilda Radner, Tina Fey, Victoria Jackson, Jan Hooks, Lilly Tomlin, Dawn French, Wanda Sykes, Phyllis Diller.

Sarah Silverman can be funny for about 5 minutes and then its just boring and repetitive. She had her "I'm shocking and I'm kinda cute" shtick - but could never go beyond that. And now, she's not cute anymore.

Women comics are like white NBA players. There aren't that many of them, and they're rarely the best.

Leftist women are hilarious. I mean, unintentionally so, but still...

Blogger God Emperor Memes October 31, 2019 8:45 PM

Ann Coulter is by far the funniest political pundit today.

He Wishes For The Cloths Of Heaven

By William Butler Yeats

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Yeats understood the profound intimacy of the romance that can exist between a man and a lady, and thus such intimacy means an ability to also wound as well as build trust. This is why women seldom make great comediennes. Their humor can come across as brittle, sharp, and sarcastic.

Blogger Fergus October 31, 2019 9:21 PM

Sarcasm comes from the Greek origin for "to tear the flesh".

@111: all the modern poets like Maya Angelou and others are but ordure before the likes of William Butler Yeats, Robert Burns, Shakespeare, etc.

"Northeastern urban city center cultural thing"

Yeah, I love the way you danced around that. The fact is the Jews invented "Stand up comedy" in NYC, and even had a "Catskills circuit" - which may still exist. The American small town/rural comedic tradition is one of the "storyteller" - someone who tells comedic stories, sometimes in a dialect or accent. CF: Mark Twain. Getting up and telling rapid fire jokes was a Jewish thing, which is why so many of the early 20th Century TV comedians were Jewish. If you were a funny guy in Omaha, you had to move to NYC or LA, to hone your craft.

Maria Bamford is the only female stand up currently working that I think is funny.
