1500 percent and 24 hours left

Your last chance to back the Junior Classics 2020 edition campaign is rapidly approaching. Whether your budget supports digital or leather, this is the time to do it.

UPDATE: 1600 percent and 18 hours left.

UPDATE: 1700 percent and 12 hours left.

A backer writes: Thank you for keeping Western literature alive at such a crucial time.  My backing involves a small story you may find pleasure in.  I met a good man, and his family, through a church I started attending in San Francisco.  He is a genuine scholar with a doctorate in philosophy/theology, and bright, who at the time was employed at a Catholic high school.  He was unable to be open with his faith at this ostensibly Catholic school, and was struggling to find employment in a school where he could be.  I prayed regularly for such a position to be made available for him and my prayers, as usual, were over-fulfilled.  He was offered, and accepted, a the position of director for a new college.  I was sad to see him move from our parish, and our direct personal lives, but more than overjoyed to know a good man of faith was to be the head of a learning institution.  I backed the Junior Classics today for his lovely daughters, who will certainly grow to become faithful, and now to your credit, more learned, ladies.  Thank you.

UPDATE: 1800 percent and 8 hours left.

A generous and thoughtful backer wants to support a family in need and writes: To help boost the campaign to 500,000, I purchased an extra hard cover set. If you know of a homeschooling family that was not able to afford a set, I would enjoy donating this to them in Mazi's honor.

UPDATE: 2055 percent of goal in the end.  Thanks to everyone who supported the campaign and made it what can only be described as a crushing success. Still. Not. Tired.

Bargain at any level. Fingers crossed for the Core Civilization project.

Blogger cyrus83 November 14, 2019 3:41 AM

Just backed it, looking forward to seeing these in print.

+1. Core Civilization is such a great idea.

Blogger Rek. November 14, 2019 7:04 AM

Speaking of. If I remember correctly I think Owen got a book from one of the bears a couple of months back, it was a condensed 'how to do everything' kinda book. Does anyone maybe know what I am talking about?

Don't know about Owen's book, but on a similar note, find an old formulary. There is some cool kitchen chemistry in those old books.

1500%. Well, I guess the haters will have to accept that this is possibly a mildly successful project.

@7 It'd be an interesting project to gather some links to those books, perhaps found on archive.org and save it to an infogalactic page.

Blogger Tryinghard November 14, 2019 8:17 AM

Hello. I'd really like to get these, but I can't get any further that a blank page on indiegogo.com.
I've tried several routes. Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. Thank you.

“Possibly” and “mildly” are not even in the ballpark

Try a different browser. I had call the bank to let the charge go through since it’s in Euros. It might take a bit of work to get there.

If around 60 people do the same, the project will crack $500,000

Hate to be a dunce, but could I get some clarification? Is the children's classics part of a larger effort called core civilization, which will include other works?

No, different project we may look at doing next spring once the Classics ship.

Even though its without DRM.

Not sure if this is the one you have in mind, but I got him a copy of Baugh's "Starving The Monkeys," which derives an essential reading list for rebuilding society:
https://www.amazon.com/Starving-Monkeys-Fight-Back-Smarter/dp/0982543107

One of my favorite selections from the STM list is Caveman Chemistry which really shows you how to do some really cool stuff, but there is a lot more than just this in the book:

I wish I could back it, but right now my wife and I can't even afford the digital copies. Thankfully, these will be available even after the campaign, and I will be investing in a hardback collection at some point in the new year.

I have, however, contacted some homeschooling families in our area to let them know about this important project; hopefully they will be interested in backing it as well.

Blogger Nate73 November 14, 2019 3:46 PM

I assume most people are backing for the 10-volume set? The digital set looks nice but I can't imagine reading to your children from a kindle.

Blogger VD November 14, 2019 3:58 PM

One project at a time. We'll start discussing the next project with everyone once this one is just about ready to ship. Core Civ is one idea, but there will be others, I'm sure.

Blogger maniacprovost November 14, 2019 6:32 PM

Core Civ sounds like a needlessly ambitious chunk. Since there is currently no "Core Civ" to reprint, you may as well release it one chunk at a time, following an overarching strategic plan (hypothetically of course).

Of course you need mundane survival knowledge.

It's tempting to include compendia of engineering knowledge such as Shigley's mechanisms or Machinery's Handbook, and any good apocalypse shelter compound should have a library of such.

But what you really need philosophical works such as a walk through Karl Popper's scientific philosophy, a revised version of Menger's economics text, and other things thatwere developed rather late but methodically explain the basis for Western thought.

I assume there are pre-enlightenment works that put forth the key Western belief that the created universe must be rational.

The technology of civilization might be too broad a target for a Core of Western Civ series. I have a couple of dozen books on older tech, and that only scratches the surface of my interests, let alone covers the field.

Blogger Rickaby007 November 14, 2019 7:43 PM

Blogger nswhorse November 14, 2019 7:59 PM

@maniacprovost

The core Western belief is the world was created by and continues to be ordered by God. There is a 66 work collection I highly recommend for further detail.

Blogger CanticBear November 14, 2019 8:17 PM

This made me laugh as much as Owen does. Thank you!

Blogger Esmar Tuek November 14, 2019 9:01 PM

It is one of my favourite hobbies to collect these sets, one cover at a time if I have to, from charity shops/library sales. I love books, I love minimalist living. I support this effort morally, maybe I'll buy a second hand set one day from somewhere.

Would a "Big Bear recommended reading" set do well? It seems the numbers would be there, although most of his fans would be video consumers only, they may want a nice big bear set for homeschooling their kids?

I think Jack London's works are crying out for a leather bound set. That, I would pay good money for. It'd be the first time all his works were published in one set

Keep buying our books, and this will happen.

One of my big goals is to put together a 4-fold parallel Old Testament:

Septuagint and Masoretic on the left page, super-literal translation and ESV on the right page. Chapter and verse in the inner margins, not inline. Notes in the outside margin.

Blogger Hammerli 280 November 14, 2019 10:23 PM

115 sets of the leather-bound.

Blogger Keith November 15, 2019 3:10 AM

I bought my second set of the hardbacks at the 11th hour. I spent so much time fretting over who was the most worthy of my friends and family for these that I didn't notice that they are perfect for my Japanese girlfriend and me to enjoy together as well.

In a strange way, it took Big Bear talking about the Ursa Manor screening of "Little House On The Prairie" for me to realize this.

Yes, you will be able to buy the regular hardcovers for the Junior Classics, individually if you prefer. These will not be limited editions.

The leather bound sets, however, are subject to limited print runs. We will likely have some left to sell, but can't promise anything at this time.

Congratulations on a great backing campaign. Years ago I worked in publications development for reference books. Before much was available online, the owners would comb antique bookstores to find gems no longer in copyright that we could use for filler. Paging through them the style of many were "do keep up, reader"--in contrast with today's agitprop and condescension.
Looking forward to end result! Great work!
