Fired from royalty?

I didn't even know that stepping down was an option. What does that even mean?
Prince Andrew was forced to quit royal duties last night after a dramatic intervention by the Queen and the Prince of Wales. They took decisive action to contain the fall-out from the duke's disastrous TV interview about his friendship with a paedophile billionaire.

The interview triggered days of catastrophic headlines and caused a string of businesses and charities to desert him.

Following lengthy discussions with Charles, who is touring New Zealand, the Queen summoned Andrew to Buckingham Palace and told him to step down.
That's fine and all, but now tell him to fly to the USA and be interviewed by the FBI. (reads royal statement) Ah, "for the foreseeable future". In other words, it's just a PR stunt until everything blows over, or so they hope.

Prince Andrew didn't kill himself.

That's not how it works, he's the prince. You kill yourself so he doesn't have to, savvy?

Blogger Sologamer November 20, 2019 7:38 PM

It means not doing public engagements. Many of the royal family actually
have pretty busy schedules cutting ribbons and so on.

I wonder who will come forward and confess.

This isn't good. He is a notorious pedophile prince, and bad things happen when he is out of the public eye. For all we know this is a reward.

Andrew's burden is to represent the British people. That means he doesn't get to get to decide what is the decision in a controversial situation. Given the number privileges he enjoys, what a shame he isn't satisfied with that.

Blogger Damelon Brinn November 20, 2019 8:56 PM

This stuff isn't coming out just randomly for no reason. It's been floating around online for years and they were always able to contain it before. Something or someone is forcing the issue. I don't know what it is, but I take it as a good sign that it will continue.

Blogger J Van Stry November 20, 2019 8:58 PM

As I understand it (and I could be wrong) once you are -out- you're out for good. They don't take you back. I think he'll even lose his title and his income from the crown. Maybe even conveniently commit suicide a few months down the road.

Did anyone notice that Prince Harry's child has a last name? That they moved him completely out of the royal family? Do you think Harry and Meghan came up with that idea? Or is it more likely that the queen ordered it?

Blogger FUBARwest November 20, 2019 9:27 PM

Is this even a big deal in the public's mind in the UK atm? In the US it seems like everyone knows Epstein was murdered but not much urgency is applied to the situation.

Blogger Lazarus November 20, 2019 9:42 PM

You colonials should not gloat so much:

Despite being at the center of one of the most serious scandals to rock the royal family in recent history, Buckingham Palace has said that Andrew remains a member of the royal family and will continue to appear with the family at Trooping the Colour, the Queen’s official birthday celebrations, and Remembrance commemorations. A palace aide said, “He remains a member of the royal family, and as a Royal Colonel and a war veteran, he will still take part in Trooping the Colour and Remembrance Sunday.”

Brett baker wrote:So he's out of sight when the accident occurs?

Well, maybe:

He receives an estimated £250,000 a year from the Queen, while the British tax payer covers the cost of his personal protection. Given he will no longer be carrying out engagements, the matter of his security is likely to come under review.

In 2011, Andrew was furious when his daughters Beatrice and Eugenie were stripped of their protection officers and ordered to give up their royal duties and pursue careers independently of the Royal Family. Incredibly, as he approaches 60, the prince is facing the same prospect.

Blogger Doktor Jeep November 20, 2019 9:49 PM

So he's going to live in a villa at BVI and drink wine.
Possibly.

He gets stripped of his royal allowance from performing official duties. This can be pretty substantial -- Harry, for instance, received some $3 million in 2017 for visiting charities and army units and serving as a goodwill ambassador. He also loses his royal staff.

Blogger wreckage November 20, 2019 11:11 PM

Generally speaking, for any action AT ALL to be taken is unusual. I don't know what to make of it; it might be an indication of Liz taking this seriously, or it might be her leaving a loose end exposed and if someone happens to snip it it's not her fault.

I'd do it for a mere $4 million. I'd be cheap at the price, because I can keep my pants zipped and act respectable, both of which seem to be superpowers the Windsors totally lack.

How 'bout it, Brits? Time for a new, mostly-English stock dynasty?

No. In line with the Monarch's other duties, she acts on the advice of her ministers, who present her with a list of nominees each year for her approval."

The Queen, King, etc, doesn't decide who gets it. The Parliament does.

Yes, i believe he can be removed of his title, it's only conferred. Extremely unlikely to happen though, as being a prince of the royal blood it would be too damaging to the image of the monarchy (they'd prefer to just shuffle him off out of public view and in to a nice fat retirement).

He will of course be in the line of succession for his lifetime, so could be interesting to see what would happen if there were a series of accidents leading to his ascension to the throne. Then he would most likely be forced to abdicate by parliament. An heir to the throne has no choice in the matter, and automatically becomes monarch on the death of whoever is in front of them. It's like dominoes. Won't happen though, they'd have to kill babies and children before he became next in line, and we all know royalty would never stoop to those kinds of lows......... cough cough

All that's happened is that he has "asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission".

What happens next is anybody's guess. I doubt if he'll lose his title, but royal titles are at the monarch's personal discretion. The last time anyone lost a royal title was in World War 1 when some British royal titles held by people on the German side were removed.

Yes. There is a video of the interview. Alleges not only sexual assault, but satanic rituals such as blood drinking as well.

The Queen, King, etc, doesn't decide who gets it.

you don't seem to understand the English language. allow me to quote the relevant part of your answer:
"for her approval"

the NOMINATION list may be prepared by Parliament. what of it?

IF
the Queen felt it necessary to request that a specific name be in/excluded from the list
AND
Parliament refused to accommodate her
THEN
what would the public reaction be? if it were even necessary for her to make her request public in the first place.

but that whole logic chain is moot anyways;
Parliament cannot force the Queen to bestow an honor, they can only suggest that they would like for her to do so.

also, your wiki answer is contradicted by the Royals themselves:
https://www.royal.uk/queen-and-honours
"As 'fountain of honour' in the UK, The Queen has the sole right of conferring titles of honour on deserving people from all walks of life, in public recognition of their merit, service or bravery. The most well-known honours are probably MBEs, OBEs and CBEs, but there are a whole range of other honours that The Queen awards in addition to these, such as The Order of Merit, or The Order of St Michael and St George."

the fact that the Royals ALLOW Parliament to submit a nomination list to them does not in any way REQUIRE the Royals to approve anything.

Blogger rcocean November 21, 2019 9:42 AM

Prince Andrew is almost 60. And this is the first time I've heard of him. If he steps down, the UK isn't losing much.
