NFL Week 9

Discuss amongst yourselves.

23 Vikings
26 Chiefs

The playcalling on the last two Vikings' drives was catastrophically stupid. Here you have the lead, the leading rusher in the NFL facing the number 30 run defense in the league that also happens to be exhausted, and the ball with six minutes left.

Do you:
a) run the ball down the throat of the defense and burn the clock?
b) get cute and try to fool the defense with screens and draw plays on 3-13?

They actually chose (b) twice in a row. I knew we were in trouble from the first 1-and-10 call when Cousins didn't just hand it off to Cook off-tackle. This is why Zimmer will never be in Belichick's class. He doesn't have the confidence to rely upon his team's strengths and order his offensive coordinator to do the obvious.

Those who rely upon surprise rather than execution lack confidence.

8 and 0!! If the Niners get past Seattle I'll believe it's for real.

Jets suck

> Jets suck

You say that as if it's something new.

Blogger Talios Hammerfist November 03, 2019 2:18 PM

The Titans are the most up and down team in the NFL hands down.

Blogger Teek-Lor November 03, 2019 2:23 PM

Go Eagles.

Blogger YIH November 03, 2019 3:04 PM

@2: They suck so bad the Dolphins might actually win.

Blogger Derrick Bonsell November 03, 2019 3:32 PM

No one deserves a game like Colts-Steelers

Blogger MichaelJMaier November 03, 2019 3:52 PM

Pretty awful officiating vs. the Colts.

Blogger David The Good November 03, 2019 3:58 PM

The Dolphins season is turning around right now! Going to soar past the Jets, then the Bills, then get a wildcard into the Super Bowl.

Blogger NP_see November 03, 2019 4:10 PM

Great time out Minnesota!

Blogger IAMSpartacus0000 November 03, 2019 4:12 PM

Chiefs 26
Vikings 23

My son and VD are both sharing some "colorful" language.

Blogger Johnny Reb November 03, 2019 4:16 PM

But scoring a touchdown, recovering an onside kick, then kicking a field goal to send the game into overtime is totally possible in 35 seconds, right?

Blogger Stilicho November 03, 2019 4:21 PM

@DTG I don't know what you've been growing, but stop smoking it. Now.

In the end, Tomlin gets back to .500 ball. But agree on the officiating. Game should have ended on that play. At least the karma hit Vinatieri: the laces were in.

Blogger Ska_Boss November 03, 2019 4:33 PM

Tough break for Minnesota

Blogger Dave November 03, 2019 4:50 PM

I only saw the last two minutes of the Vikings/Chiefs game when Fox switched over from the Eagles game. I see Cousins, while connecting for 3 TD passes, however, was only 50% passing, 19 for 38. Not exactly confidence inspiring.

Also Thielen (hamstring) left the game in the first quarter and Diggs was held to one catch.

Out of conference loss not the worst thing, they're still in good shape for a wildcard and if the Chargers happen to beat the Pack today, they're only 1 game back with a rematch with the Pack still to come.

Blogger Gettimothy November 03, 2019 5:36 PM

Bucs up?

Blogger jeffinjapan November 03, 2019 5:52 PM

The list is long of coaches who choke during that crucial 5 minutes remaining window with the game on the line. The Vikings absolutely should have run the ball and if the Chiefs had stopped them, then well done. But no....

Blogger jeffinjapan November 03, 2019 5:54 PM

SKOL Vikings!

err, I mean

KLOS, Vikings!

Blogger Dave November 03, 2019 6:32 PM

Took a 54 yd FG with 0:50 left to go in the third quarter for the Pack to finally get on the board. Going to need a huge comeback from the future HOF QB if they pull this one off.

Big win for the Raiders. Unfortunately all the other teams in the division won against teams they were meant to lose to. Browns are awful.

My poor poor Cleveland Browns.

Blogger Nate November 03, 2019 7:43 PM

oh sweet summer child... Vox... you only think you know bad play calling.

Going against the worst run defense in the NFL... the titans gave Derrick Henry 2 hole carries in the first half.

Blogger Iron Spartan November 03, 2019 7:56 PM

Cousins looked like shit all game. Lots of easy passes were missed.

Blogger Rough Carrigan November 03, 2019 8:26 PM

90% of Belichick's brilliance is just not doing stupid things. Living in New England and seeing the Patriots all the time I'm sometimes shocked watching games between two other times how many stupid things they do.

Belichick didn't innovate new offenses or defenses. Oh, they'll throw a weird 2-5 or 6-1 front at teams sometimes, especially in postseason games, but mostly he just makes sensible choices about what kind of offense to have based on what his resources are. And his teams don't shoot themselves. It's amazing how powerful not putting a bullet into your own foot is in a football game but the Patriots are probably the NFL's best at it. They don't have the most talented roster. Hell several teams probably had more talent going into the playoffs last year. But his guys are smart and they play a disciplined game a large part of which is usually not losing the game themselves but making the other team beat them. Most teams can't.

Blogger Nate November 03, 2019 8:28 PM

"90% of Belichick's brilliance is just not doing stupid things. "

if only this trait rubbed off on Vrabel. Every single game he does at least 1 truly epicly stupid thing.

Blogger Rough Carrigan November 03, 2019 8:28 PM

... two other TEAMS . . . (not times)

Blogger Don't Call Me Len November 03, 2019 8:29 PM

Warming up the bacon slicer for Freddie Kitchens' backside?

Blogger Rough Carrigan November 03, 2019 8:31 PM

The other coaches who came from the Belichick Patriots haven't done well. I'm not sure quite why that is though the near miraculous achievement of his former DC, Romeo Crennel, in getting the 2007 Browns to a 10-6 record is terribly unrecognized.

Blogger Don't Call Me Len November 03, 2019 8:38 PM

Kirk Cousins, Three Quarter Hero, is now 0-10-1 when trailing in the fourth quarter.

Athletes named Cousins don't seem to be a good investment.

Carr to Renfro isn't exactly Snake to Biletnikoff, but it worked today.

Vrabel looks like a guy endlessly debating whether to fertilize his yard one more time before winter.

I know, James. I had Joe Namath pajamas as a little boy, went to many a game, been a long suffering fan, yet I keep coming back for more. Gluttony.

Ravens beat the Patriots, leaving the Niners as the last undefeated team in the league.

Blogger Dantheman November 04, 2019 1:24 AM

Overall, weird week. 49ers nearly lost to the Cardinals. Packers lost to the Chargers. Pats lost to the Ravens.

Blogger Iron Spartan November 04, 2019 8:56 AM

Watched some of the Vikings game again, and if I was a conspiracy theorist, I would say that Cousins intentionally threw the game.

True enough, and I'd add they also (a) objectively lack the strength and consequently (b) the will to use that strength.

In football, a stronger more unified offensive line can dominate games. The Ravens last night. The Colts against the Chiefs.

Marshal Yanda of the Ravens. Quenton Nelson of the Colts. These are players that change the game. Very intelligent, immensely strong, extremely quick and with a desire not just to beat their opponents but to crush and humiliate them.

Oh, by the way, they are white.

Look up and down the league. There are very good black offensive lineman, but this is a role where Viking like men can, and do, dominate.

With such players you can control the outcome. Without them, it's trickery or nothing.

Blogger CarpeOro November 04, 2019 11:36 AM

Sure didn't rub off on Patricia. Watched two games this season and I'm pretty sure the standard call is high diddle diddle, straight up the middle, for first down. With backs that never get more than two yards.

As a Lions fan, I find the games where they almost put it together immensely frustrating.

Blogger van helsing November 04, 2019 7:38 PM

the lions have to blow people out or run into a team with no wideouts (NE, last season) to win by a good margin. i dont have cable and looking at stat lines, it's obvious they have no speed on defense. they do ok in the red zone cause they can tackle and play zone there and get away with it. otherwise they have to play deep so no one gets past them. in the fourth quarter they are gassed. staffrd is actually playing well the last few years. they should have traded him so they could have gotten value before he declines.

Blogger JAG November 05, 2019 3:15 AM

This is a bit late, but my game was Monday Night. The Cowboys latest free agent pick up black cat turned the momentum. It is bittersweet, though, as a black cat made it to the NFL, and I only made it as far as junior college football.

Blogger Middle American Water Tower Man November 05, 2019 9:03 PM

Coming in late to rub it in. Our backup QB beat the vikes. My Chiefs are getting healthy and they will be rested and ready for a strong Super Bowl run.
