The NHL, converged

A longtime NHL broadcaster is deplatformed for daring to observe that Paper Canadians don't care about the historical sacrifices of real Canadians.
Hockey broadcaster Don Cherry has suggested that he was given an opportunity to stay with Sportsnet after making widely derided comments about immigrants and poppies.

“I could’ve stayed on if I wanted to and knuckled under, and turned into a simp, but that’s not my style,” Cherry said Monday night in an interview with Toronto radio station Newstalk 1010.

“If had gone on and said a few things and done a few things, I definitely would have been back. There’s no doubt about it,” he added later.

Cherry was fired Monday, nearly 40 years after he began working for “Hockey Night in Canada,” as part of the fallout from Saturday night’s broadcast.

During his “Coach’s Corner” segment, the 85-year-old Cherry claimed that immigrants do not wear poppies or support veterans.

"You people … that come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that," he said. "These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price."

The remarks, which are the latest in a decades-long string of controversial comments from the popular commentator, were widely criticized. Sportsnet network president Bart Yabsley called Cherry’s comments “discriminatory” on Sunday and announced Monday that he would be no longer be on air.
No matter who you are, no matter what you do, no matter how famous you are, if you do not kneel before the Narrative, the SJWs will come for you.

These people aren't even hockey fans. Real Canadians find his firing a despicable act. Also, he said nothing false.

The truth will always hurt to people who have something stuck in their self-righteous craw. I have nothing but venom for these types of people. Good on Mr. Cherry for giving them both barrels.

Ye broke faith with us was spray painted on the cenotaph at Old City Hall in Toronto last night.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Don Cherry is a Canadian icon

Yes, and he is easily in the top 10 most recognizable people in Canada. This is big news there.

It was very interesting to note (((who))) was most vocal about calling for his head.

I went to the war memorial near work for the Rembrance service yesterday. Funnily enough, before even hearing about this kerfuffle, I noticed that there wasn't a single enricher in the couple hundred people that had gathered.

I have, but nobody pays attention to me. 'Evil scum' would be a mild version of what I normally call them.

I would like to make a small clarification, though: Hockey Night in Canada is run by the CBC, which is literally state-run media. The NHL had no say in whether or not Cherry was fired, since he didn't work for them; he worked for the network.

That said, I would like to see some hockey personalities speak up and rip CBC a new one for their disgusting actions. I'm not going to hold my breath, though...

Those lines are inscribed in the Montreal Canadiens dressing room in both French and English. It would be nice if they would remember them in regards to Cherry and his shameful mistreatment.

Don doesn't care, he doesn't need the job.
He will never apologize and why should he? he is right.
Funny thing is that, if you listen to what he actually said, he tore into everyone, not just "immigrants".
He singled them out at one point to remind them that THEY came to THIS country and the least they can do is wear a poppy to hnour those that died so this country would be here.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan November 12, 2019 10:01 AM

#9 Glen saying that is the first step and necessary IMO. Look at the conservatives who will post on this thread and wander off into the details doing the usual conservative school boy in the principal's office routine.

IMO it is the Convergers who should be questioned at the very least not Don Cherry.

At least Cherry didn't apologize or retract his words. What he said was nothing and even if it was an antisemitic rant, he shouldn't apologize. No one should.

Don Cherry is very much like Donald Trump. Not as smart, but the same straight-talking, high-energy, Alpha Male personality.

Lots of folks are calling for him to run for Prime Minister. Unfortunately, he's 85 years old!

It’s a war on whitey, Canada’s old stock.

We can talk past each other as mass migration & anti-white hostility reach fever pitch...

Or we can meaningfully engage by first being precise about the battle lines.

One good thing: CHERRY DID NOT BACK DOWN!!!

Shifting demographics mean long-established victim group public funding could be affected. Majority of the Canadians will lose no matter who comes on top. Cherry represents old Scottish who used to have a lock on police, prisons, judiciary (until fairly recently) so he served a great purpose in bringing this discussion to the fore.

When the new Canadians are responsible to keeping the native racket afloat, and Caribbean-Canadians in the wings waiting to step into it, things, like I said, are getting interesting

Blogger Lauri Stark November 12, 2019 10:42 AM

I find it hilarious that while all kinds of trash talking is allowed at the crowd or between the players, racist remarks can bring you a lifetime ban to hockey games. That's too bad. Imagine a coach throwing a banana to the bench of opposing team to trigger a black player.

HNIC is now run by Sportsnet, not CBC anymore. I notice that Don Cherry's detractors use words such as "offensive" and "hurtful" to describe his remarks, but I haven't seen them use the word "untrue."

I'm actually glad that Don Cherry went out like this, on his feet like a man. Much better to die on the field of battle defending veterans than with some sappy video montage.

Ron Maclean has shown himself to be the cuckiest Canuck cuck who ever cucked. He not only threw the man, supposedly his friend, who made his career and fortune under the bus. He did so quoting some old native woman to show just how inclusive he is. May he never sleep a restful night again after such a massive disloyal betrayal to his friend, the vets and his nation.

My only regret is that I cannot cancel my subscription over this, because I cancelled my cable years ago.

I'm not sure it was the NHL that was converged as much as the broadcaster of NHL hockey (although there are signs the NHL is shifting in that direction). The networks have wanted to get rid of Cherry for at least a decade. They despise him because he's a plain speaking, right leaning, devout Christian who loves his country and cares about its soldiers/vets. This is unforgivable for the woke left and they finally found a way to get rid of him, but it's blowing up in their faces as there's been a lot of uproar over it in Canada.

I can't stand Don Cherry. I always thought he was a bloviating windbag.

HOWEVER, comments like this one would have been completely non-controversial a decade or so ago.

He's bang on correct. Look at the Canadian Armed Forces and you'll see a demographic composition much like 1940. White, male. Look at Canadian cities and you'll see they look like a cross between China, India and Somalia.

The little third world money grubbers won't serve in the military, won't volunteer for charities apart from those that benefit their own ethnic groups, and won't even spend a couple of cents for a poppy.

Blogger CarpeOro November 12, 2019 2:28 PM

If the local sports radio station fails to talk about this or comes down against Cherry, I'm dropping them completely. I already know the "personalities" lean left - one is even a New Yorker - but in the Detroit metro area there is likely to be a huge amount of support for Cherry. The high school I attended many moons ago even has a hockey team. Like or dislike his personality, he is one of the mainstays of hockey culture on both sides of the border where ever Canadian television reaches.

Exactly. Between firing DC, "Hockey is for Everyone" and the relentless push to "hire moar wimmin", the NHL is rapidly converging. I've watch my team religiously for around 7 years now, but having the Narrative shoved down my throat is becoming too much.

It is really astounding. When I was in the CAF I did a few training exercises with American military and always noted the prevalence of Hispanic soldiers. But in Canada, if you spent your life in the military on rural bases you would never know that you weren't in 1940.

By the way, sammi, that's a great idea. I doubt converged companies would change their minds, even if it costs them money, but seeing how angry normal people can get is worthwhile.

Thanks but credit goes to Gamergaters for setting the method. Much appreciated.

Don Cherry's brand is saying (((unpopular))) stuff that most people agree with, and pissing off Ron his handler. The people at the top are completely out of touch. Canadians regularly poll over 90% against any immigration. And last I checked Remembrance Day here is one of the most Scottish things outside of Scotland since military and Scots is practically synonymous here. The kilt and associated kit is the only ethnic garb otherwise allowed in ceremony. We just don't do "welcoming" in regards to Armistice.

Grapes is a legend, in his own mind as well.

Love the guy. He talks about the necessity of fighting as a code of honour amongst the players, causing the SJW types heads' spinning like the girl in The Exorcist. His knowledge of hockey, the game and the inside game are most entertaining for those of us who play or played the game. His comments of racist and edgy events are part of the showmanship, the entertainment factor which he is so famous for. He has insight into the game, the personalities and the politics which he alludes to in cryptic language, sticking it regularly to the SJW crowd, exposing their fru-fruey leanings and avarice.

The honour with which he will be bestowed by rural Canadians and plain old folks in the rinks, on the sidewalks and coffee shops will be a constant reminder of the absolutey right choice he made to stand up and double down on his TRUTHFUL comments.

God bless Don Cherry, a saint of the Most High. A man worthy of the call on his life, pouring into the young warriors on blades.
