Welcome to Finance World Hell

The media is finally suffering the inevitable effects of financial predation and is now crying about the very "economic efficiencies" they used to celebrate in the industrial sector:
Their employees call them “soulless” and “vultures” -- as does presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Their focus on cost cutting has sparked newsroom rebellions. And they are snapping up more and more of the media landscape.

These days, whenever there is an uprising in the media business, the chances are that a private equity firm is involved. The latest clash happened this week at the sports website Deadspin, where the interim editor in chief said he was fired for refusing to limit the site’s focus to sports coverage. Afterward, at least eight journalists resigned in protest, including more than half of the site’s writers.

Sanders, the independent Vermont senator seeking the Democratic nomination for president, chimed in late Thursday with a tweet supporting Deadspin workers and lambasting Jim Spanfeller, chief executive officer of Deadspin parent G/O Media.

G/O Media is a collection of websites owned by the private equity firm Great Hill Partners. Two months earlier, Deadspin’s former editor in chief also quit, claiming that Great Hill Partners wanted to cash out quickly rather than invest in the long-term growth of the site.

I heard about this yesterday, but it was from a completely different point of view. The "journalists" were undergoing discipline after invoking a public rebellion against their own website owners to protest the advertising placed on the websites. The lack of self-awareness is palpable yet well-known at this point.

From a Youtuber named HeelvsBabyface with a touch of humor:

If these journalist and their managers were intelligent enough, and if they could ever even think of escaping their SJW box, then "learn to code" would be good advice for the next several years.

Yet they would need to get away from nearly all the big corporations, many of these big internationals have gone on to hiring "refugees" as their latest SJW move.

I've been hearing about opportunities learning combination tools to run small businesses. These are far from new, but they represent a greater opportunity now as both the developers and the client can stay small enough to avoid the most stifling Affirmative Action and similar rules.

Also yes, the press enthusiastically became a loudspeaker for "Globalisation and it's efficiencies" AKA sending your job abroad so 3rd worlders can do it for peanuts, thus saving millions but keep selling the goods at the same price.

Then shouting for years that workers in the western hemisphere should let those jobs go and work in new jobs in high-tec robotics, AI and nano-technology that will become abundant due to the efficiencies of the globalism.

The press, pushing for clown world since 1965... I wish they drown in their own faeces while they learn to code.

Something I've heard at around the rumor level of verification is that Obama gave the media a huge "stimulus" payoff that ended shortly before a bunch of new media outfits downsized or folded.

This case, though, is delicious Gawker fallout, Hillary's good friend (((Haim Saban))), wrecker of the The Onion in early 2008, kept the group on life support for a couple of years before this Bryan Goldberg fellow bought them.

Curiously, Wikipedia says "Goldberg founded Bleacher Report in 2007 with David Finocchio, Alexander Freund, and David Nemetz, who were friends from middle school. Though not an engineer by training [but this father was a "technology executive"], Goldberg took on most of the technical tasks related to the sports news website." Even if he didn't learn to code, gaining competence in systems administration goes well with this description of him, "Bryan Goldberg is widely considered to be a polarizing figure in New York media. He has been described as the “buyer of last resort” for his hard-nosed deal making tactics."

It was either Aaron Clary or the ZMan that was talking about this some months ago. It was generally recognized in the 80's and 90's that it was bad customer service policy for any corporation or service provider to "embrace politics" in their dealings with customers. Since we're all across the political spectrum and you want to appeal to as many customers as possible, to take a political position is clearly stupid. No matter what position you take, you will piss off some of your customers. If you take no position, you retain the greatest number of customers. It seems as this commonly accepted horse sense has been abandoned by some portion of of corporate America, especially stuff like media. The private equity firm that bought Deadspin, which I assume is a sports-oriented media site, appear to applying what you and I would regard as common horsesense onto Deadspin, maybe its a good thing that private equity is buying up all of the media companies.

I am not a fan of private equity, particularly in specialized manufacturing. I believe the problems at Boeing are rooted in the slow replacement of operations managers with financial ones over the past 20 years or so. However, I think in non-specialized, non-manufacturing fields like media, private equity may be just what the "doctor ordered" to resolve these issues.

That was always a lie. They couldn't be naked about their politics because even as little as 30 years ago this nation still had a very large population of moral people that would be disgusted by their politics, and there were enough moral companies/mom and pops they could turn to as alternatives.

The way they got around it was having some agitator vocally use their service or demand something of them. They then would bow to them because they "didn't want to get involved in politics". People were duped by that line. Now that they have control of a majority of the corporations, put a good number of mom and pops out of businesses and have subverted society as a whole they can get away with nakedly pushing initiatives themselves.

They (media people) did it to themselves.

Alienating vast swaths of people by openly deriding their values while promoting those (values) antithetical to (again) vast swaths isn't likely to be a profitable business model.

As I note frequently, when it's time for the end of an Era, those dependent on that Era formally destroy everything about it on which they depend. When Eras turn over, everyone's sailing without charts, but those who previously appeared to sail well seem to just drill holes below the water line in their own boats...

@39 All that TARP and QE new-money needed to go somewhere. A lot of it went - funneled and recycled through connected VC firms - to startup websites like Deadspin. I don't think Deadspin ever turned a profit, and was losing millions annually.

Economic axiom about credit is like a fifth horseman of the apocalypse.

Monetary expansion via credit creation obeys, as does everything else, declining marginal returns. By borrowing credit into monetary existence via issuing debt, economic actors find the pool of viable uses for that spending gets shallower and shallower.

There's no doubt that we long ago passed the point where diminishing marginal returns fell below even zero percent interest on the debt fueling it. The Fed, Congress, Public Corporations, other firms and consumers are losing value on each dollar borrowed into monetary existence but are making it up on volume (because so far, Bond Buyers are still so fixated on capital gains from rising prices that they'll bid debt to higher-than-par prices.)

I simply cannot believe it. The only reason one buys a negative-returning bond is on the belief that it will go even more negative (i.e., that its price will continue to rise above what it promises to pay in the future.)

The credit market is shoveling money into a bonfire (spending that yields zero or negative returns) but the indebtedness REMAINS. To the extent that our political rulers do this, they are the enablers of Americans indenturing themselves in order to get the next hit of crack.

But it looks good on GDP calculations.

Gee, Ma, we got a huge GDP number but all I got was this lousy made-in-China T-shirt that says to wear once and then landfill.

Looking over Deadspin, it is a skinsuit of its former self, circa 10-15 years ago. It looks like most of the writers are women and very politically minded.

10-15 years ago, it was similar to Barstool Sports, where it was an energetic Frat house of dudes who loved sports and ruthlessly mocking anything they could. Some of the greatest comedic articles I've ever read were back when the race-horse Barbaro was injured and they were trying to heal his broken leg, and the commenters were hilariously mocking all the fan mail the horse was getting.
A sister site, Jalopnik, for cars is where I made friends that I keep in touch with to this day.

This is specifically about the ERP for small and medium businesses.

I have no doubt you can learn programming, but you have to consider the competition. And, they are likely:

Men or women (more likely white males) kicked out of major corporations because of diversity. They often have years of experience in development (programming), management, and finance of some kind. These people are often highly skilled practical problem solvers that make six figure + incomes for a number of years before getting pushed out, often while their skills are still good for years.

You could learn to program and get on as a diversity hire perhaps in one of these companies that's forcing out the toxic males, but you do not seem to meet the mold, and that's good.

If you knew someone involved in their own business with this area, and you had great learning abilities in abstract programming development, that person could perhaps bring you along. It would take a while to get experience under those conditions, and that person could not pay you much while learning. Reality.

Don't know about that, but I was in a surgical rehab center for a while and they had to keep rotating the patient care givers around, because otherwise they would lose their best people. One of the patients would warm up to them, they would go home with the patient, and end up in home care. A lot of older people have needs and accumulated assets to spend.

We don't have a surplus of nurses in this country. Help wanted adds turn up and you can advertise for free on craigslist. More money if you are trained, but I bet you could jawbone into a job by claiming to have tended an older relative. Lots of people don't need anything special. Just discuss with them what their needs are. Not a great career opportunity but a way to make ends meet if you got a problem. Cash if you don't want to lose your gov handouts. No doubt easier for a women to get into, but I bet a man could do it also. Some patients have mobility problems and manual strength could be helpful.

We just had the World Series, a bonafide Major Event in American sports, so went over to see Deadspin's coverage.

The first article was about drama and badfeelz in the losers clubhouse, written by a strangely named "American", Samer Kalaf.

The second article was by a girl. Its no-joke actual title is: "I Would Have Sex With An Entire Major League Baseball Team If Given The Opportunity."

Deadspin hired deadheads who were failed political reporters. SJW's who wanted to take on Trump, but got stuck in the Journalism Toy Department. And now they don't even have that. Its hard to feel sorry for them, they wanted to review movies & Broadway plays, push "the narrative" and DNC party line, and now they can do that elsewhere. And we don't have to read people who hated sports - writing about sports. At least until Deadspin hires a new bunch of SJW's.

Re 71, we have been in an RN crisis for more than 40 years. This means any B student who is conscientious could apply for a two year Associates Degree as an RN, even at a community college, and likely snag a scholarship. Many medical centers will pay off your school loans.

Think about it. That is a perfectly legitimate way to make a decent middle class income with excellent benefits. And then, most stillend up as supervisors even without the BSN. And many end up in IT departments doing Medical Informatics.

@79, the nurse shortage is bogus. In Alaska, there are roughly twice as many licensed nurses as there are employed nurses. There is a shortage of nurses willing to work for the offered pay, but there is no shortage of nurses.

@79 @81

My wife is an RN (not in Alaska). Her employer mandates a BSN, unless you are an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse-think "limited practice nurse". Several years ago the non BSN degreed nurses were given five years and tuition reimbursement to get their degree or find new employment.

In all the years we've been married (a long time, longer for her I'm sure), she's never been short of recruiting mail, and just today she was asked if she would take an extra shift tomorrow (Saturday)-at "special bonus pay".. double time. That 80 plus bucks an hour.

The shortage is real, and going to get worse. The first classes of "common core" students are about to graduate, and we're screwed when they are cut loose. Meanwhile, more and more of us will need nurses.

If employers are artificially making a shortage, odds are pretty good they are angling toward filling those jobs with H1b visas.

Basically Western countries (and Japan) have huge shortages in nurses, doctors, IT staff and engineers. These shortages are only going to get worse as our societies age. We have three choices: 1. Pray the robots get good enough to do it all. 2. Import Pajeet and Raoul en masse. 3. Train more of our own youngsters in these fields. Which of those three options are you going for, Western man?

First they outsourced the call centre workers and I did not speak up because I was not a call centre worker.

Then they outsourced the testers and I did not speak up because I was not a tester.

… and then they outsourced me.

Blogger Fergus November 02, 2019 4:04 AM

Yep, and due to the garbage soution of globalism, since there were inadequate numbers of graduates, they first imported Irish and Filipino RNs which caused a brain drain. Not a great solution.

Since many women burn out in seven years, a resolute guy can enter a demanding specialty like ER and thus can work as much overtime as he wants. When young, that is highly attractive for a guy supporting a family.

The millennials were ensnared by useless degrees, yet in half the time, they could learn a useful beneficial skill, and have no problem finding work, but I guess not in Alaska. Here the cost of living is low and we are woefully short.

Obamaccare was ruinous. How do you add millions to medical insurance without adding key professionals to treat them? Did we add a thousands of new nursing programs or medical schools? NOPE. It meants immediately Obamacare was broken.

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling November 02, 2019 6:56 AM

The AMA and Federal government keeping the number of residency slots low, while drastically increasing the number of women in the pipeline, who statistically "burn out" or otherwise stop being doctors fairly quickly, is worsening the situation at the top, at the same time the aging Boomers are increasing demand.

As others are saying, H1-Bs are a partial "solution" to this. Use this http://www.h1bemployersearch.com/ to find out how many are in your area, for the medical centers in mine there are a handful, all making six figures that look potentially sane based on the specialty.

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling November 02, 2019 7:17 AM

@88 Fergus: I thought the cost of living in Alaska was high due to transportation costs for so many necessities and luxuries.

Another way Obama broke the system was the electronic medical record system mandate in his "stimulus package." All my doctors who had their own private practices were forced to work for the man, the local hospital complexes. One GP who I switched to for a while because my doctor switched to working in the ER I dropped in part because of the commonly reported problem of their having to focus so much on the computer screen to meet the "meaningful use" requirement, they've got to enter enough information until enough green lights show. Which was one sentence in the bill that spawned 750 pages of regulations, and a huge number of expensive consultancies. And I read a lot of doctors have retired early.

Decreasing the supply of healthcare at the same time relatively conservative Silents or even Boomers cohorts are getting old will kill them off more quickly, an explicit goal of (((Rahm Emanuel's))) brother, who advocates "attenuated" (reduced) healthcare access for the young who aren't yet political as well as the old.

Blogger Avalanche November 02, 2019 10:04 AM

@65 "Any virtuous lady, who can present herself well, can make a decent living by running errands for elderly folks."

There is even an oooooold job title for that job: it's called "a lady's companion." Gets the unsupported young woman OFF the streets, i.e. preventing the fall into prostitution; and provides a helpmeet for an elderly woman without available relatives.

The real spin on Deadspin. Up to a few years ago, they were a cutting edge and humorous on the hypocrisy of sports. However, SJWs, ie millennials-their writers, infected their pieces with Wok views. The owners finally acted on declining readership and announced the site will be strictly sports and not speak out on Trump, etal. The editor in chief quit as did eight "journalists" (more than half the staff) in support of this new directive. The upheaval at Deadspin is another example of the cancer that is SJW- they infest like a cancer and ultimately destroy its host.

Blogger Fergus November 02, 2019 1:31 PM

The whole concept of medical informatics is that you develop a system looking for patterns to then point to the most likely solutions based upon logical lines of inquiry. The ultiate goal is AI but it's an insidious one as it will eliminate jobs, right?

Any job can be done by a robot or AI which means the globals technocrats have reinvented slavery. Why do you think Caesar was reversing slavery? It helps a tiny few while destroying the economic society.

The horrendous inflationary effects of globalism halved American wages since 1990. What happens if you effectively double the workforce availibility through feminism and illegal aliens and insane work visa levels? You crush wages. They planned this. The middle class is destroyed.

Wait it gets worse. Look at what physicians made versus today. When demand increases but availability is limited due to insufficient professionals, then prices rise. But Obamacare saddled the hapless physician with mammoth regulations while reducing their payments. Every insurance government or private negotiations the payment. If you plummer gives you the bill, do you negotiate how much you pay him? He would laugh in your face, and f you refused, undo the work he just did or take you to court for unpaid receivables.

Massive inflation and Obamacare harmed physicians and even RNs as much as they also are actually gets cut wages while demand is tremendous.

The globalists, RINOs, the Democrats have broken the economy and with an aging populace and a declining birth rate, America will go the way of Japan.

If there are less and less people making middle class wages, how can you have a consumer economy? Robot and AI slavery will crush the USA.

@85 Alaska is a different animal than the continguous 48. My wife's professional journals are all focused on obtaining and retaining staff.

"If employers are artificially making a shortage, odds are pretty good they are angling toward filling those jobs with H1b visas."

It's not an "artificial shortage", it's the incredibly rare combination of skills, including dealing with non-compliant patients and hostile family members.

One thing I've learned in all the years living with my wife, and having a prior girlfriend is that the thing that drives hospitals is outcomes-there's less mortality with RNs. That's in hospitals. This isn't like IT, and professional licensing excludes those sort of strategies.

Fear geriatric care facilities, which are God's waiting room and death is an expectation and where there's usually one RN supervising LPNs and CNAs.

Then there was this:
