Attack on a US embassy

The more things change in the Middle East, the more things stay the same:
The Pentagon has sent 100 Marines to the US Embassy in Baghdad to bolster security in the wake of an attack on Tuesday where hundreds of pro-Iran militia members stormed the compound, set walls ablaze and chanted 'Death to America!' in retaliation for American air strikes.

US soldiers inside the embassy have fired tear gas, stun grenades and warning shots, wounding 62 of the hundreds of fighters who broke down the main door to the compound and set a fire in the reception area, according to the Popular Mobilization Forces, an umbrella group for the militias recognized by the Iraqi government.

The ambassador to Iraq was on leave at the time of the attack and embassy staff had already been evacuated before the US Marine guard became besieged behind the bullet-proof glass and on the rooftops.

Tuesday's attack on the embassy was is in retaliation for US air strikes on the Iran-backed Kataeb Hezbollah on Sunday night, which killed two dozen fighters. Those strikes were in retaliation for last week's killing of an American contractor at a US base in Kirkuk.
I think I speak for most Americans when I say, "who the hell cares?" American troops shouldn't be in Iraq in the first place. Sending in more Marines and risking them getting wiped out is not at all the wise course of action. And babbling about how "Iran will be held fully responsible" serves no purpose at all when everyone knows that the US cannot and will not win a war against the Iran-China-Russia alliance.

The age of the one global superpower is over. Leave the Middle East to the Middle Easterners.

I recall William Lind, 15 years ago, predicting that US personnel would evacuate Iraq from the embassy roof Saigon style. Bush's boner may have taken longer than expected to play out but this might be the end game. When you take out a Sunni like Saddam and install a Shia favorable to Iran this will happen.

Time to pull the embassy out, and the U.S. presence with it. Do business with and travel to Iraq at your own risk.

@Nate - Or we could take the far more reasonable approach of not having any embassies in dangerous, third world countries. Why do we even need a physical presence anymore, anyway? If some third world gov't is too backwards to figure out how to setup a satellite teleconference, we probably have no use for relations with them anyway.

Blogger Nathan Hornok December 31, 2019 1:33 PM

It's so curious how many (if not all) world empires eventually get tangled up by chaos and lost causes in the Middle East. It's both the birthplace of civilization and the graveyard of empires. And yet the land itself is not very desirable compared to other parts of the world. Interesting.

Blogger Daniele Grech Pereira December 31, 2019 1:35 PM

God, I hope they are not preparing to murder those marines to start another war.

We must end the sacrificing of Christians to murder Muslims IMMEDIATELY! And by "we" Kemosabe, I mean you and I and every other man or woman who declares themselves Christian. This cannot be what God expects from us!

Those of us who know, must do all that we can to explain this situation to our friends and families.

Two of my classmates who are int'l students from Iran were very impressed by what I knew about the situation there, and I don't even know much. They were very appreciative, and have become my friends. It is amazing how close and respectful people can be, even when we've been propagandized to hate each other. The power we have is unseen, and truly remarkable. Let's unleash more of it in 2020.

Pray for peace.

And isn't this EXACTLY the story of the Middle East multiplied by thousands of years?

Bring the troops home.

Blogger camcleat December 31, 2019 1:43 PM

@1 Similar to what I was thinking. I'm not disputing the long term wisdom of getting out of Iraq and the ME in general, but embassies are different than an occupying force.

Sean Smith, Chris Stevens, Tyrone Woods and Glenn Doherty are names worth remembering for what they represent in how Evil our government can be to its own citizens.

Blogger Tars Tarkas December 31, 2019 2:03 PM

Why the hell we guarding Iraq when we will not even guard our own borders. Hell, these guys can just declare themselves refugees and come kill us here.

We need to go home!

Blogger Ominous Cowherd December 31, 2019 2:03 PM

@1, Nate, we only have to defend the embassy if we have an embassy. We don't have to have an embassy. Mohammedans are savages, cannot keep an agreement, are not capable of decent behavior. It is not appropriate to have an embassy to savage animals.

Blogger Bill December 31, 2019 2:06 PM

Bigger question; why didn't the Iraqi army defend the embassy or green zone. This should be their fight.

Blogger nbfdmd December 31, 2019 2:10 PM

Nate, where does it end? If they keep attacking the embassy, presumably that would mean a never-ending escalation of US forces. But since there is no declaration of war, there's NO way for them to ever win the conflict.

So what should the US do if their embassy gets attacked? Close the embassy. Just say "fuck you guys" and LEAVE.

Blogger James Dixon December 31, 2019 2:13 PM

> you have to defend the embassy.

If you want to keep an embassy there, yes. Do we really want to?

Shut down the embassy, bring everyone in the country home. Leave the Iraqi's to fend for themselves. If we have to intervene again, use nukes.

Blogger Dire Badger December 31, 2019 2:24 PM

There's only one way to win a war in the middle east, and that's with hideous reprisals.

Our politicians refuse to do that, so, since Iraq cannot even be bothered to defend our embassy, it's time to pull out and let them fend for themselves.

I see Nate's point. But I smell a rat. My understanding is the Iraqi embassy is the largest embassy we have in the world. Seems like we ought to have plenty of troops already present to defend it. The call for more troops is either just for show or something else is going on entirely. Since you can't take the government and medias' statements at face value, it must be assumed some plan is hatching before our eyes.

Blogger Guy Incognito December 31, 2019 3:13 PM

This is insanely dangerous.
I've guarded embassies, including the one in Baghdad. The extra Marines who arrived are FAST Marines, and they're there just to bolster security so the current MSG watchstanders don't have to stand double duty.

The compound is HUGE. Probably the biggest US diplomatic facility in the world. Imagine a small amusement park and you're in the ballpark.

The compound guards are all foreign national contractors from various countries. They seem decent, but who knows?

There's plenty of State Department RSO security officers and contractors who are really, really good, but they'll only go so far.

Personally, against any kind of sustained mass "protest", I don't think I'd be comfortable calling that embassy compound secure without at least 300 additional armed guards.

If I had to guess, I'd bet that we have constant air on station over the entire area just in case.

Blogger Stg58/Animal Mother December 31, 2019 3:14 PM

Long term, yes close the embassy. Short term, you have Americans facing a mob. You going to run?

Oswald has a real point. It's essentially a military base. Where are all the troops??

Something stinks. Why were they allowed to break in? Waste the fuckers.

Send them in long enough to make sure all personnel are out, all papers/important stuff is out.

Then, as their last act, wait until they overrun the place, and hit the detonator on the bombs. Leave them a pile of rubble to enjoy - those that survive.

Do NOT return until they PAY for a new embassy, if at all.

Also I'm not such pessimistic as far as us military might goes. I posit chiana is a paper tiger , iran is retarded not advanced at all and subdued by got humpers those 2 we would take in a bare knuckles modern military fight. Russia we wouldn't overcome. However, since our gawd emperor is a 5d chess master. It will end up being us + Russia against 2 eastern lightweights. To pull is off us needs to fuck deep state bc Russia will never trust us deep state enough.

We will see if this is when America takes a stand and is basically willing to burn the damned bridge to the ground to execute one of the fundamental securities among nations, that embassies are sacrosanct and off limits to violence.
Carter was a coward but Trump has nothing to lose and everything to win here. Trump will approve ground attack air attacks if push goes to shove and the Iraqi government fails to abide by the rules of international diplomacy and fails to safeguard our embassy. Our guys will come out OK and we will then close our embassy if the Iraqi government fails in its sovereign duty. If they can't manage to safeguard our embassy they're of no use to us and we can withdraw EVERYTHING from Iraq because our mission there is over.
win win.

That's the truth of it. We would have to kill every male over the age of 7 and then send the women to work camps. Arabs, and Muslims in general, only respect strength, seeing compassion as weakness.
It is hopelessly naive and stupid to think that we can force Western-style democracy on them. They don't want it, and they don't need it.

The US greenlighted Saudis to waltz into Iran and fund protests a month ago, they delivered cases of cash to people that had hardly anything and merrily went on their way burning down banks and creating law and order chaos. Then the Bushehr nuclear reactor suffered the same fate as the North Korean nuclear reactor did in 2017, earthquake. Apparently that's one down, two more reactors to go. Instead of changing tact like North Korea did, Iranians have dug in, told China and Russia they better not turn support away, and went for their own protests, targeting Iraq and the US embassy.

These are not Iraq nationalists, because there is NO Iraqi "nation!" These are either Iran proxies, or rogue spooks. This has "rogue spooks" written all over it, just like the Saudi oil field bombings.

There is a legitimate split between Arabs/Persians, and the influence between SA and Iran, and Sunnis/Shias. Iraq is really three states.

As usual when it comes to Trump best to wait before offering an opinion. The 'attack' on the embassy consisted of Shia militia, no uniforms and unarmed, milling around and shouting slogans. Iran was obviously going for something with this but not an armed attack which tells me they're still acting rationally. It's a flex at best.

As for Trump going to war with Iran, calm down it's not happening. The number of sperg outs I'm reading from self described right wingers! Stop wetting your panties. This was a fairly minor incident that was quickly and effectively dealt with. Like the tonne of gold a day being produced in Area 51 using alien technology and shipped to the NY Fed.

"In laying out the case for gold, Goldman Sachs recently noted that 2019 is looking to break another record for central bank gold purchases - an estimated 750 tons - beating the record 651 tons accumulated last year. According to the World Council, 2018's central bank gold haul was 74% more than 2017 and the highest amount since the gold standard ended in 1971. Here's where it gets weird. Goldman also discovered, over the past three years, 1,200 tons of gold flows worth $57 billion that mysteriously disappeared from the official record."

There's unexplained gold flows and the amount of physical gold has soared higher than gold ETF holdings. Since Trump has been in office 1200 tons is 3 years at just over a ton a day.

You might want to rethink Lazar being a crank about energy tech because while transmuting gold is obtainable (been done in a lab) you have to put more in than you get out, unless there's an energy source we don't know about yet. All I can credit Trump for doing is trying to get around the national security regimen to let real Americans and anyone that values freedom to get in the loop in some form, and think about the implications if real.

Blogger Monotonous Languor January 01, 2020 1:06 AM

The neocons want a war with Iran, and the mullahs would like something to distract the population from their rotten administration of Iranian society. Trump is smart enough to realize he could be caught between the two if he isn't careful. My prediction: he'll back off in the short range from further military action, while ramping up economic sanctions. Longer term, he'll surreptitiously decrease permanent US military presence in the region, step-by-step.
