The fall of Skywalker

The Devil Mouse is taking a serious bath on Episode IX. Compare and contrast the per theater performance of the most recent excrescence with three other films:
  • Avengers Endgame: $25,534 3-day avg, 43% decline from D1 to D3
  • The Force Awakens: $19,994 3-day avg, 49% decline
  • The Last Jedi: $17,328.67, 3-day avg, 51% decline
  • The Rise of Skywalker: $13,278 3-day avg, 58% decline
In other words, despite Episode 9 opening to barely half of the Avengers finale, its audience is dropping off more rapidly. This points to a domestic box office that will be less than three-quarters of its predecessor, or around $450 million.

Between this and the failure of the Galaxy's Edge theme parks, no wonder Disney's debt is skyrocketing.

This is so good. The sooner Star Wars dies, the soon it can be laid to rest, instead of being a skin-suit for the wicked, talentless, and decrepit Social Justice Nightmare.

Nothing can take away the fun of the original movies.

And I am having a ball watching them fail with their current attempts to leach off of them.

Almost like most people don't enjoy seeing their favorite fiction franchises turned into a steaming pile of marketing gimmicks and political lectures.

Can't wait for the inevitable conclusion of the focus groups on this umpteenth disaster: "Surely people are bored with Star Wars now, we need to do this with another IP now!
- Yes, but with a progressive touch to be modern and creative!
- Assistant, please open the list of most popular IPs we haven't bought yet..."

Blogger wreckage December 22, 2019 9:26 PM

Walt's formula was: get a classic story, make it a bit more mass-market, throw talent into it, cash bank. The thing is, a story that's been told for a century or three has already proven its market appeal.

This was also, basically, the SW original trilogy.

The current formula starts with rejecting the forms of storytelling.

As a lover of much of the EU and someone who used to work at Disney, this pleases me greatly.
Doomcock's leaks turned out to be overwhelmingly accurate.
The SJW freaks who praised TLJ are turning on JJ and Rise of Skywalker for ruining the "masterpiece" that was TLJ.

Devil Mouse Star Wars is a zombie corpse with no lasting appeal.

Considering the excitement for the Mandalorian when it came out based solely on the trailer, there is still a huge SW market. But the market won't continue to be fooled by the mouse.

A Star Wars movie that rips off the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, only even more pozzed? The scavenger hunt to look for the thing that will do the thing. The hidden big bad that's looking to restore his physical body. The climatic battle scene at the end where the ghosts of the good guys who've been killed by the big bad come back to help the hero. Fuck me they even mimic Snape's redemption arch with Kylo, minus the awkward shipping and totally hetero kiss. I knew Jew Jew Abrams was a hack, but that's taking it to a new level.

Also what's with modern Disney and their aversion to hetero romance? All of their movies have a creep anti normal sex narrative.

At this rate, we should be able to buy the Star Wars franchise for pocket change at the Disney bankruptcy sale.

Then deep-six the sequel trilogy and hire John Wright to crank out some GOOD sequels. We'll make a fortune!

The prequel episode I ruined it for me. JarJar grated on me during the movie so much I nearly left. Then that little prat... ugggg. Finally, the antagonist, Sith Lord Darth Maul, was inexplicably killed off. I held out hope thinking he was going to win....

If you look at the trailers for Ghostbusters and the Wonder Woman movie, you can already see the pendulum swinging back. People are tired of drab and gritty and edgy...kinda like the movies that were around when the original Star Wars came out in '77. I think the craze for the 80s is the bright colors and the optimism for the future that was present then. It's almost like the craze folks had for the 50s back in the late 70s.

Hollywood is always going to be pozzed, but they are realizing that you can't shame folks into going into your movies...

I'm just looking forward to the Alt-Entertainment industry to pick up steam. The REAL Galaxy's Edge series by Nick Cole really needs to come to the big screen.

The $ amount looks bad, making the real viewing numbers worse. Goes from blockbuster to average HS play values. Deadly amount of empty seats.

First-order approximation. Figuring a $10 ticket price, RoS averaged 1328 viewers/day. Allow for average of 5 showings/day on 3 screens/theater in a multiplex, to maximize the first weekend pull. That's on the order of 100 viewers per presentation, average. With the reported dropoff, possibly 200 on opening day to 40 on Sunday.

Blogger Cataline Sergius December 23, 2019 8:15 AM

What has to be terrifying to Mickey the Great and Terrible, is that this movie isn't even the biggest Star Wars disaster on the horizon.

That would be the better than a billion dollars, good ship Halcyon.

Even more nail biting has to be going on over the fate of their Star War’s hotel, the good ship Halcyon.

For those not in the know, this a hotel where you are basically locked in with your children for two days as you “experience” a galactic cruise.

You are allowed one... O-N-E… port call at Galaxy’s Edge.

Two days is both the minimum and maximum time you will be staying aboard the Halcyon. I can’t speak for anyone else but I know I’d be looking for the escape pod after thirty minutes of “why didn’t we go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Dad?!”

Anyway after two days you will then have to pack back up and shift over to your real hotel for the rest of your stay.

Presumably the Halcyon can be reskinned as a real hotel after this fails, although it will be the only hotel in Disney World without windows. In short there is no way in hell I’d stay there under any circumstances.

Maybe in the days of Han, Luke and Leia this might have been a workable idea. But the kind of Star Wars Zombie that will actually go to a First Order themed "experience" have never had kids in the first place.

Blogger new1207 December 23, 2019 8:37 AM

I'm happy that the last movie is a flop, but as a local passholder, I can tell you that calling Galaxy's Edge a failure might be a bit premature. The new ride, rise of the resistance, is supposed to be amazing and judging from how early one needs to be there to get a spot in the virtual line, the area, at least in the short term, will be a success.
The ride is using new technology that Disney patented so for now it will wow crowds. I just think that the tech changes so fast now that the ride will feel dated in 10 or so years.

Blogger lckychrmsrr December 23, 2019 8:51 AM

What's most interesting to me is the clear divide in perceptions. The hard numbers Vox shows don't lie. A lot of reviews online from fans of the originals who dragged themselves to it just for closure agree it's not great.

Yet, all I hear around me (by mouth) is how good it was and how much people love it! This past week, I've been told "Have you seen it, it's so good!" over a dozen times. Of course, some of those same people liked all the various Disney live action remakes and those are objectively crap.

Blogger Pizza December 23, 2019 9:12 AM

My understanding is the movie ticket split is ~ 50%/50% (domestic) for the theater chain and the movie producer. Family of 4 going to see a movie @ 12.00+ each is $48.00 not counting extra for food/concession cost (so Devil Mouse earns ~ $24) vs. watching the movie at home in a couple of months on Disney+ @ $12.99 for a month. The Mouse eats its tail. Big Movie Box Office is a direct result of multiple viewings usually by teenage girls i.e."Titanic". "Avengers" movies are actually family movies driven by Mom's taking sons and sister(s) coming along for the ride too and not complaining. With great looking 70"+ TVs selling for less than $1,000 and Disney+ on a as needed basis...why pay for the wokeiness dog food? will i see "1917" in the theater? yep. looks interesting. Star Wars I may watch on a plane or Disney+ after watching "Mandalorian".

jamsco wrote:Saw it today. ..... I'm thinking it's more like 4,5 and 6 than the more recent movies have been.

Agree somewhat. It was like they tried cramming parts of each into one move, but not necessarily the best parts.

Look at the movie through the eyes of a 10 - 12 year old kid. It's lots of fun action, explosions, pew-pew lasers, goofy and ugly scary aliens. That targeted audience not very aware or concerned about any socio-political propaganda, may not even be very familiar with the original trilogy.

This movie by itself would have be a good reboot except for the script and editing. The characters and plot are salvageable. This combined with 7 & 8 could have been one, really good SW movie if the best parts from each were welded together into one.

But what do I know. I'm a boomer who didn't even know Empire Strikes Back had come and gone until after I saw ROTJ in a bargain, 2nd run theater for $1. That's how much I cared about Star Wars movies until later after I became a father and my kid got all excited about them.

Blogger Ryan December 23, 2019 9:48 AM

Went to Galaxy's Edge earlier this year, and while it's cool to walk around in, there's really nothing much to see. Like 1 ride, and to be honest, I prefer the old Star Tours over Smuggler's Run. It's like Disney wants to make bank off of Star Wars without even trying too hard.

Went to see it with my wife on Saturday night. Our theater was less than half full. The movie was barely tolerable. It was a mess, but given the disasters of episodes 7 and 8, it tried as best as it could to wrap the story up.

If only the people behind "The Mandalorian" had been given the chance to create these three movies...

Why spend $4 billion to drive a franchise into the ground? I realize the movie business is not run by bean-counters and they're going to end up hiring SJWs and others who know how to do nothing but pull down what other, better men have created.

However, did responsible parties not even pretend to have long-term plans? This was after Marvel had shown the way, and of course other movie franchises had managed to persist for decades, with peaks and valleys. James Bond, for instance.

What kind of maniacal studio hires a Rian Johnson, let alone allows him to film a first draft with no apparent oversight. Or hires hack director J.J. Abrams to remake Star Wars 2009 under the label "Star Wars" but for no reason lets him write. For which he has never demonstrated particular talent.

Why bother with Kathleen Kennedy and her feminine supremacy? Why can't they hire such people like they hire FX departments or physical craftsmen? Because some shield of creativity protects them?

Even Beethoven had to bow and scrape to his patrons. Purge the fools.

Blogger tublecane December 25, 2019 9:12 PM

@4- The Walt and Lucas formulae both appealed to mass audiences by communicatin' as part of a common culture. Even if the storyteller happened to be not technically part of the culture. I'm going to assume without checking that Disney employed homos, reds, Jews, and others back in the Walt days, if against his wishes. But it didn't tell in the products, aside from their stereotypical blandness.

George was an American of his time. Boomerican, who liked cars, Beach Boys, and pulp fiction. He knew who he thought most people saw as the bad guys and good guys, bad and good qualities in human beings. That showed in the original.

He hired (((Lawrence Kasdan))) to write the sequels, but the model was strong enough for that not to make a difference. Kasdan also wrote the Force Awakens, because why not? It was a remake. However, the soul of the thing was gone, because no one else involved appeared to have any intention of attracting an audience beyond slapping the Star Wars brand in the tin.

Thence we arrive at the work of Rain Johnson, who up to that point had made a career with original stories wearing skinsuits of other, better stories and genres:

Brick, which was okay, a film noir set in daylight at a high school in the manner of Bugsy Malone.

Looper, which made zero sense and was a crappy version of Terminator.

Speaking of culture and mass communication, large portions of Last Jedi I literally don't understand. Like "saving what we love, not killing what we hate" (if that was the line; I'm not looking it up). Huh? I have no idea what that means.

The entire plotline of women scolding the ace pilot, wut? He literally saved their lives two seconds earlier. What is going on?

The hero of the original trilogy is committing drawn-out suicide because he was right about his nephew being a mass-murdering psycho. What movie world am I in?

I'm having difficulty explaining this, because the world of Rain Johnson is so foreign. J.J. Abrams is more comfortable, because he's just things I've seen before without context or inner motivation. Or endings. Better than gibberish, but not full of sense. Sense-adjacent.

Blogger tublecane December 25, 2019 9:14 PM

@48- The "Skywalker Saga,' if anyone wants to call it that, ended in 1983. Throwing around the name "Skywalker" for marketing this certain-to-be virtually Skywalkerless movie is cynical, yes, but also just dumb.
