Championship Weekend

I like the Titans and the 49ers today, because defense wins championships. Discuss amongst yourselves.

UPDATE: And it's over. Chiefs just went up 35-17 halfway through the fourth quarter. I did NOT like anything Tennessee did since the last five minutes of the first half. The KC defense was actually better than the Tennessee defense.

Packers D is better than its been in a long time, but by the numbers yeah, they're average. Last I saw it was SF by 7.5 and I have to admit I would take SF on that spread.

I'd like to see the Titans go all the way. Hey! Maybe they'll actually cover Travis Kelce...

Blogger Daniel January 19, 2020 4:31 PM

Mahomes is not Lamar Jackson, Titans. Whoa.

Blogger MrNiceguy January 19, 2020 4:31 PM

As a KC fan, I take much comfort in Vox's record at picking football games.

Regular football watchers: How often does the QB run in a touchdown?

Trump rule in place for KC...always wait two quarters.

Titans got this! Stick to the gameplan, and get the final possession. Titan up!

This is 1962 AFL Championship rematch between the Dallas Texans and Houston Oilers.

Blogger Lazarus January 19, 2020 4:53 PM

Mahomes too much to handle so far.

What are the odds Andy Reid's hernia explodes before the end of the game?

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim January 19, 2020 4:54 PM

Titans were playing a technical game and got ahead, but I don’t know if all the coaching in the world can defeat pure athletic firepower like mahomes, Kelce, and woman puncher.

Blogger RedJack January 19, 2020 4:54 PM

Probably correct sir, but I am Chiefs fan. Have been for a long time. So Go KC!

And before any anklebiters complain that I am cheering a bunch of guys playing a kids game, I am reloading a few hundred .308 rounds while listening on the XM radio.

Blogger CF Neal January 19, 2020 5:00 PM

I've just listened to the last 10 minutes of the half -- which about doubles the time spent on NFL all year! But I am rooting for the Chiefs!

Blogger Shrugger January 19, 2020 5:37 PM

Ok but GB's defense has been better down the stretch.

Blogger Timmy3 January 19, 2020 5:39 PM

KC is way ahead. Oops. 34-17, 7:33 4th quarter.

Blogger Manuel January 19, 2020 5:47 PM

re: Titans. When you got one main offensive weapon it's not that hard for the KC defense to know what you're going to do.

Blogger Shane Bradman January 19, 2020 5:49 PM

Was rooting for Titans but I'm glad it was such a good game. And loyal to the Seahawk brand I am rooting against the 49ers. If the Super Bowl comes down to Packers and Chiefs, I think the Chiefs will win.

Blogger Talios Hammerfist January 19, 2020 6:01 PM

The Titans lost the game for sure, but on a 3rd and 1 a ref threw a flag for holding on the snap of the ball. Feels fishy...

Fireworks are going off in the KC burbs.

Wouldn't be sad to see Reid get his ring this year. And this is from a lifelong Raiders fan. Anyone but Joe Buck Rodgers.

Blogger Dave January 19, 2020 6:22 PM

Andy Reid finally got enough talent around him even he couldn't screw it up.

Blogger Unknown Chapter January 19, 2020 6:25 PM

Mahomes is unstoppable

Blogger Randomatos January 19, 2020 6:35 PM

Condolances to Nate and other Titan fans. The Vikes already dropped the ball for this year, so you can revel in the fact that you surpassed us this year (again).

Blogger CF Neal January 19, 2020 6:55 PM

Mahomes is the real deal.

Now it's up the the coaches to close the deal.

Go Chiefs!

Blogger Damelon Brinn January 19, 2020 7:14 PM

Mahomes is not Lamar Jackson

Which is why, although Mahomes hasn't been kept a secret, he hasn't gotten the same adulation from the sports media outside KC. They crave a particular kind of black QB, and Mahomes doesn't fit the mold, while Jackson does. So when Mahomes was the MVP last season, you didn't get all the breathless articles about how he was taking over the league and changing everything.

Blogger Daniel January 19, 2020 7:17 PM

Rodgers is old and slow. Packers are dead.

Blogger Archella January 19, 2020 8:04 PM

loving this. go niners!!!

Blogger van helsing January 19, 2020 8:08 PM

not ashamed to say i bet on titans to cover. they sure had their chance. meanwhile the niners are conducting a clinic on how to play D and shove the ball down someone else's throat.

Blogger JBurgess January 19, 2020 8:09 PM

I didnt think my Packers would win, but I didnt think they would embarrass themselves to this degree. 27-0 in the first half is about as bad as it could possibly be.

Blogger carnaby January 19, 2020 8:20 PM

KC because tasty BBQ wins football games

Blogger Jill in StL January 19, 2020 8:21 PM

You were correct about the Packers, unfortunately, as well - they look like pooh against the 49-ers - another year of not making it to the Super Bowl.

Blogger Ska_Boss January 19, 2020 8:49 PM

I hope Mahomes can put out the 49ers fire.

Blogger Weak January 19, 2020 9:08 PM

I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in Lamar Jackson and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve

Blogger Lazarus January 19, 2020 9:14 PM

Daniel wrote:Rodgers is old and slow. Packers are dead.

Rodgers has had a chip on his shoulder since he was overlooked in the draft by San Francisco. He has spent his whole career trying to prove they were wrong, but has not been completely convincing in that endeavor, but he does do hip commercials.

Blogger RomanCandle January 19, 2020 9:31 PM

Right now, I'm just hoping the Packers can come back and cover the 7.5 point spread so I can win my $30 bet. That's about all the excitement a Cowboys fan can expect from the NFC Championship Game nowadays.

Blogger Shane Bradman January 19, 2020 9:38 PM

Like I said a few weeks ago, the Packers is a mediocre team. The 49ers are certainly good this year, but the Packers scraping through into the playoffs and getting a coin toss of a round against the Seahawks meant luck was on their side. Least impressive team playing this week. Hard to tell who will win between KC and SF, I think it will be an incredible game.

Blogger Lazarus January 19, 2020 9:46 PM

last shot .... players milling about.....Rodgers looking for people who are coming to pay respects...no one shows up.

Granted, it was a 2 second shot, but hey.

Blogger Archella January 19, 2020 9:53 PM

don't stop believing.

Blogger Rough Carrigan January 19, 2020 9:58 PM

The Packers were outgained by opposing teams this year. That is, opposing teams gained more yards against the Packers' D than the Packers' offense gained. It's extremely difficult to run up a 13-3 while doing that.

So, the question was, which Packers team would show up today, which one was the true version, the 13-3 squad or the bumblers who were out gained by the opposition.

We have our answer. They looked like a college team with a couple compass directions and "state" in its name going up against the cream of the SEC

How often does the QB run in a touchdown?

often enough that the typical QB rush has it's own name; the Quarterback Sneak

that's normally restricted to extremely short yardage situations, 3 down and <2 yards for a 1st down or right on the goal line.

then you have the QB Option / Sweep play which tends to be more popular in college. while the naked RB Sweep is used in the pros, the QB Option isn't used nearly so much because
- pro D-backs are fast enough to blow up the play most of the time
- you really don't want to put a high dollar QB in a situation where he's getting lit up almost every time you run the play, whether he keeps the ball or not

most other outside QB runs are going to be break downs in line coverage when the receivers are covered. aside from the Sneak, QB's almost never run right up the gut unless the D-line has over pursued behind the quarterback while the O-line manages to create a gap to the front.

designed QB runs are fairly uncommon in the pros just because they don't want to risk the single most important player like that.

Blogger Johnny January 19, 2020 11:01 PM

Oh Rogers is all right, it is just that the overall team isn't that good. I was surprised that they did as well as they did this year, didn't think they would be in the running. Too bad the season ended in a thud.

Blogger Uncle Maffoo January 19, 2020 11:26 PM

Hey, we finally got that Young/Montana matchup we were promised!

Blogger Azimus January 19, 2020 11:33 PM

Yeah Packers were in "Happy to be here" mode. They didn't start playing til the 3rd quarter and by then it was too late. 49ers have so much talent on defense, they can run all day and chew up clock, and Garrapolo (sp?) is a good upper-mid QB when they need him. Should be anfatastic Superbowl, especially when the Chiefs O and 49ers D is on the field.

Also Kyle Shannahan looks like a street rat.

Reid bringing his clock management skills to the big show !

Good on the Chiefs, I will be rooting for them.

Blogger Oswald January 20, 2020 11:13 AM

If you beat the son of Shannahan, does that count as a revenge win over Shannahan? I was at the game where his broncos had Vaseline on their shirts to make it hard to tackle and block them. Thank you Dolphins for beating the Patriots and thank you Titans for clearing the road. The Titans definitely had the toughest road to get to Super Bowl.

Blogger Akulkis January 20, 2020 12:31 PM

"If you beat the son of Shannahan, does that count as a revenge win over Shannahan?"

That depends: Are you talking about a game that is part of an American professional athletic league, or are you talking about feuding clans in Scotland?

Shanahan is Irish, smarty pants.

not that the Irish didn't partake of an invigorating little Celtic kinfeud from time to time.

now if ye can show me that Shanahan is a sept or ilk of the Campbells, well then i may just have to hoist me claymore and go pay Michael a visit.
