Wheels within wheels

One can't help but notice that neither the Israelis nor the neocons appear to be overly pleased about the recent assassination of Qassem Soleimani. Perhaps, instead of a prelude to war, it was a prelude to the long-overdue withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.
The Iraqi parliament called on the government on Sunday to work to end all foreign troop presence as a backlash grew after the killing of a top Iranian military commander and an Iraqi militia leader in a U.S. strike in Baghdad.

A resolution passed by a special session of parliament said the government should cancel its request for assistance from a U.S.-led coalition.

Parliament resolutions, unlike laws, are non-binding to the government. But this one is likely to be heeded: Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi had earlier called on parliament to end foreign troop presence as soon as possible.
Remember, the god-emperor seldom does the obvious. So, the obvious explanation for his actions is seldom going to be the correct one. After all, there is no reason to believe this was even an attack by the U.S. military, given the fact that the previous attempt on Soleimani was by someone else.

And one immediate result has been the cessation of offensive actions by the U.S. military:
The US-led coalition has announced it will put most of its operations on hold and focus on ensuring the security of its troops as tensions in the Middle East skyrocket after the death of Iran’s top general at the hands of the US. The coalition will from now on devote most of its efforts to protecting its troops and bases, a coalition spokesman told journalists, adding that most operations against militant groups have been put on hold.

I don't know who pulled the trigger but I would not be surprised if the House of Saud was not the puppeteer... this has the same sloppy, short-sighted, arrogant vindictive smell of the Khashoggi affair, and I believe the Quds force has been mopping the floor with the Saudi's big money army in Yemen. Regardless of who pulled the trigger this feels like an angry childish tantrum.

Blogger Sicilian switchblade January 05, 2020 4:57 PM

If neocons are not pumping their fists, and this leads to at least a reduction of US military in the middle east I see that as a definite positive.

What if Trump had a high level Iranian leader droned, and we just pulled out? Logistically and technologically what could Iran do as retribution?

The fewer bombs and troops the US has in the middle east the better.

Its an interesting resolution, given that the Americans never asked for permission to invade Iraq to begin with.

Apparently the Sunni and Kurd factions boycotted the vote, so its seems pretty inconsequential.

But yes, the Americans should stop being co-opted into fighting other people's wars and agendas.

Blogger nbfdmd January 05, 2020 4:59 PM

Geopolitics is a lot like poker. Like in poker, you need to show strength when your hand is weak and weakness when your hand is strong. And if you're thinking about folding, you make a large bet.

If Trump intended this as a final show of strength before peacing out of Iraq, then it's brilliantly played.

Blogger Johnny January 05, 2020 5:25 PM

What I think is true is that if we pull out one of the likely outcomes would be to turn the country over to the Iranians, or at least the southern half of it. Not an overly bad outcome if it will allow us a reduced presence in the region. Those country borders are all arbitrary anyway, just the outcome of how Britain set things up following World War One. It would be neat trick if we could reduce forces in the region without instability. Maybe the God Emperor is smarter than I thought after all.

Just to back track a little, when they first started attacking our embassy, I took it to be an effort to repeat what Iran did to Jimmy Carter with the embassy captives. The ultimate goal would be to create an embarrassment that would unelect Trump. And by the way, was it really chance event that the ambassador was somewhere else.

However it turns out, be ya jerking around on old Jimmy Carter was a whole lot more fun.

Anticipate the AAs, Finance Corps, JAGs, and IGs to conduct lots of audits, and not stand for the usual Report of Survey. Missing money and equipment gets categorized and rolled up, and becomes another financial weapon to be used by district. I'm becoming convinced that Iran's government is itself a deep-state op, the bad cops in a gruesome good cop/bad cop routine so to speak, intended to keep us entrenched in the Middle East. This is in contrast to North Korea, which I don't think is one.

By this theory, killing Soleymani was never done until Trump came along because he's one of their most important bad cops, i.e., assets.

For all the bed wetters and Alt Right garbage people disavowing the GE and Oy Veying over Trump going to war for Israel, again please shut the fuck up. The GE will not be going to war with Iran, or anyone else for that matter. He's shown over and over again during his Presidency that every time (((they))) come up with some gay op to drag America into war he responds by undermining and deflecting. End result no war.

The middle east is a snake pit populated with inbred retards. The Iranians and Shia Arabs hate the Sunni and vice versa. However the Muslim Brotherhood, which includes Turkey and Qatar, although being Sunni have a long standing alliance with the Iranians. The Israelis gave material support to ISIS, which is Muslim Brotherhood funded by Qatar and Saudi Arabia fighting Iran in Syria, even though other branches of the MB remained Iran's allies. TLDR we have no fucking idea who's in bed with who and when they'll stab us in the back. Maybe the most insane thing is when Obama sent troops to take out ISIS while at the very same time the CIA was funneling billions in weapons to them.

How the GE engineers a complete pull out without provoking the deep state into assassinating him and his family will be one of the great stories of our time.

Those country borders are all arbitrary anyway, just the outcome of how Britain set things up following World War One.

This is one of the most prevalent misconceptions out there. The Imperial Brits mastered the art of letting the natives maintain their empire for them... not just from raising native troops to do the painful work of policing, but I mean to use INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED internal tension to create a need for a benevolent overlord to keep all party's in check and see that fairness is served out. People are never easier (or cheaper!) to rule than when they are at each other's throats. When the Brits ripped off the bandaid in India in 1947, a million people died. Do you think its a coincidence? That every single colony had long-term, low-grade internecine violence? This very edifice is being built in the US as we speak.

Oh no, those lines were not arbitrary. Those lines were the carefully learned lessons of 200 years of empire after the disaster of the American colonies. I would not be surprised to find their fingerprints all over the American Civil War (or at least, the decades leading up to it) though that us just spitballing. The Brits are bastards and they built a heck of an empire.

If half the stuff about Qassem Soleimani is true, then bumping him off was the right thing to do. If he really was behind the recent embassy attacks, he's a mad dog.

Yes, the United States military shouldn't be anywhere in the world besides the borders of the United States. But Soleimani attacked us while we were there. It's almost as if he was trying to provoke us into attacking Iran.

Seriously, if the Muslims want the US out of the Middle East, all they had to do was cease all hostile actions against US and allied targets. The US forces would eventually withdraw as peace had been achieved and the political will would have shifted to bringing US forces home.

Instead, this Iranian general decided to attack US targets. He took the ticket. And now he's just a hand with a ring.

Blogger Akulkis January 05, 2020 11:28 PM

That list is laughable.

A base I was at, which was turned back to the Iraqis years ago, is listed separately about half a dozen different names it was called throughout the years.

Specifically, FOB Rustamiyah AKA Camp Cuervo AKA Camp Muleskinner, and then, for some reason, it's linked to Rasheed Air Base, an adjacent, but completely different facility (Rustamiyah was Iraq's equivalent of West Point before we came in, and has resumed such a function after US forces left it. Rasheed has always been operated by air forces (British, Iraqi), except for a short time when the CIA controlled the place. I have seen no evidence that U.S. military forces ever paid any attention to it other than destroying the aircraft revetments in 1991.

Then looking at Rasheed Air Base's page, some how it is conflated with not only Cuervo/Rustamiyah, but also Camp Falcon (AKA FOB Falcon) several miles away, and Camp Loyalty (FOB Loyalty) also several miles away, but in nearly the opposite direction.

The list is more accurately called "a partial list of facilities in Iraq used by the US military at any time, under any name."

It is by no means an accurate list of where US personnel are located today.

There WERE over 250,000 uniformed U.S. personnel in Iraq. The number is now around 10,000 according to public sources which I know and trust, which is consistent with the Status of Forces agreement that the Obama administration almost tore up (which would have plunged Iraq into complete instability and opened the door to the crazies taking over).

I could give you a list of every US serviceperson promoted to Brigadier General or above. That would NOT mean that we have, or have EVER had, a military of the size which would be implied by such a list, for the simple reason that you would have all of the generals from the Civil War, WW1, WW2, and the Cold war all on that list, not to mention all of the others.

Hence his victories bring him neither reputation for wisdom nor credit for courage.

He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated.

Hence the skillful fighter puts himself into a position which makes defeat impossible, and does not miss the moment for defeating the enemy.

Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory."

I just read a report that Trump says he's not withdrawing from Iraq unless the Iraqi government compensates the US for the military base that the US built.

Excellent idea. Sell the "embassy" to Iraq and get a smaller real one.

I gotta say reading the comments on this thread has been really encouraging. The different perspectives on how this can be part of the plan have been great to read.

All this about Soleimani... aren't there any Traveller fans around here?

Not every coincidence needs to be publicly pointed out in order to demonstrate one's knowledge of an obscure subject, Jack.

Let's hope you're right Vox. Although Bolton seemed happy and tweeted that this is "hopefully they first step towards regime change".

Some points:
1. Trump and Bibi are cross-campaigning (and have been for awhile. This is not the first time this happened - Peres and Bill Clinton did the same thing on the lefty side of things).
2. Bibi is in a bit of legal trouble right now and is using every conceivable measure to both get re-elected and stay out of Jail. Whether the accusations against him are genuine or a lefty plot is besides the point - the point is that he's not pulling any punches.
3. "Iran" has been Bibi's campaign buzzword from the get go.
4. The most PR effective thing he can possibly do is not attack Iran, but make it seem like he convinced Trump to attack Iran. Who actually dropped the bomb is not even important - what's important is who takes credit.

That's all it's ever been. They need complete control. Look at the countries that have world banks now vs 2000. They are all countries that we "brought freedom" to

I just posted a blog post making a similar point. I saw the assassination as a way to avoid war myself.

Trump can pull out the troops and after the fuss the media has been making the last three days, and the way the left has summoned the anti-war crowd again how could they fault him for the complete withdrawal he's been wanting. If this happens I will believe that Trump plays Nth dimensional chess.

The comments and theories here are worth a thousand times more than anything I could observe coming out of the MSM. This event seemed so out of step (or perhaps extreme) as compared with Trump's other foreign policy choices that there must be more to the story than that he was simply hoodwinked by the neo-cons. He has earned the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise on this thing. But reading VOX and others helps keep ones head clear of the fog of war.

Sadly, it's getting more obscure as time goes on. Deserves a better fate, like most of GDWs stuff I suppose.

This will be amusing. Either we get the withdrawal, or we get Iraq begging us to stay.

Blogger Silly but True January 07, 2020 2:00 AM

The US Army had concluded a year ago that Iran had won the US Invasion of Iraq:

So it was Soleimani who got the cupie doll.

What’s the primary result of killing the man singularly responsible for deaths of over 600 US soldiers in Iraq 2003-2011? Iranians chanting “death to America.” Good thing they weren’t doing that before.

What will happen if they try anything? An expansive and ill-defined US adventure in the Middle-East. Good thing we weren’t doing that before.

Hello friends,
I'm a little ashamed to tell such a story. But I would like to share with you a great resource. I've had problems since my sexual organ was too small. I've been worried about this and tried to rectify the situation by means of pumps and tablets. Because of the tablets, which I ordered, I had complications and I was in the hospital for some time after that I gave up trying to increase my penis. But once I found Dr adam herbal cream. My first result was: plus 3 centimeters after 2weeks of usage. If you want to know more details and how you can enlarge your penis bigger, I recommend you to contact Dr adam today, email address adamokpoko@gmail.com or add him on whatsapp line +2348151731392.
