Advice from Spain

Spacebunny transcribed some translated advice from Spanish medical professionals who are fighting Corona-chan and are up on the latest protocols. Keep in mind this is advice for the medical personnel who are in regular contact with the infected; no need to be paranoid or apply the "every 20 minutes" advice. It's also consistent with other information that is being passed around by informed European sources.

The Chinese now understand the behaviour of the covid19 virus thanks to autopsies that have carried out. This virus is characterized by obstructing respiratory pathways with thick mucus that solidifies and blocks the airways and lungs. They have discovered that in order to apply a medicine and unblock these airways so that the treatment can be used to take affect. However, all of this takes a number of days.

Their recommendations for what you can do to safeguard yourself are
  1. Drink lots of hot liquids. Coffees, soups, teas, warm water. In addition take a sip of warm water every 20 minutes because this keeps your mouth moist and washes any virus that’s entered your mouth into your stomach where gastric juices will neutralize it before it can get to the lungs.
  2. Gargle with an antiseptic in warm water, like vinegar, or salt, or lemon, every day if possible.
  3. The virus attaches itself to hair and clothes, any detergent or soap kills it, but you must take a bath or shower when you get in from the street. Avoid sitting down anywhere and go straight to the bathroom and shower. If you cannot wash your clothes daily, hang them in direct sunlight which also neutralizes the virus.
  4. Wash metallic surfaces very carefully because the virus can remain viable for up to nine days. Take note and be vigilant about touching handrails and door handles, etc. I guess within your own houses you can keep those clean by wiping them down regularly.
  5. Don’t smoke.
  6. Wash your hands every 20 minutes using any soap that foams, do this for 20 seconds and wash your hands thoroughly.
  7. Eat fruits and vegetables. Try to elevate your zinc level not just vitamin C levels.
  8. Animals do not spread the virus to people. It is person-to-person transmission.
  9. Try to avoid getting the common flu, I guess because this just already weakens your system. And try avoid eating and drinking cold things.
  10. If you feel any discomfort in your throat, or a sore throat coming on, attack it immediately using the above methods. The virus enters the system this way and remains for 3 or 4 days within the throat before it passes into the lungs.
I'm beginning to notice a note of confidence that was previously absent as the medical authorities seem to feel they are beginning to get a handle on this whole thing. There is no panic, and the young people are actively cooperating and doing everything they can to help the elderly stay well supplied.

In addition to vitamin C and zinc, I'd also recommend getting vitamin D3 (or go outside if you can), and magnesium (many people are deficient in this and it has a lot of functions in the body). Herbs like oregano, licorice, ginger, garlic, and turmeric can also help the immune system.

I am using this situation as an opportunity to get healthier than I've ever been. Intermittent fasting, sleeping more, eating good, and supplementing adequately. Also, I am reading more scripture and praying a lot more. God bless~

Good to know. Thanks. I wonder if swishing cranberry juice around in one's mouth would have the same effect as it does on the urinary tract - making the surfaces so slippery that the little beasts slide right off. Anyhow, it is never a bad time to drink cranberry juice.

Another important piece of advice (also from Spain) : if you get sick don't use anti-inflammatories! No Ibuprofeno. Use Paracetamol instead.

In tests in France anti-inflammatories have shown been to have adverse effects when someone has Covid 19.

Germany has not seen the predicted outbreak. One thing Germans like to do is put boiling hot water to chamomile, either the tea, the plant itself, or an extract, in a bowl, and then put your head over it with a towel. You get as close as possible and breath that steam in. I learned this in Germany and have it for colds ever since. It works very well.

In late December I got the flu. Likely not Corona on that timeline even though I was in contact with Chinese nationals from the Wuhan area around Christmas and I open shipments from China near daily.
This was an awful, terrible flu. It turned into bronchial pneumonia by mid to late January. I then got a severe gastro bug and now I'm suffering from seasonal allergies.
I've literally been sick for 3 months and Corona scares me.

Apparently certain dogs tested positive for Covid-19, perhaps ones in contact with infected people. There was no reported illness to the dogs themselves. The concern is that they could spread the disease to humans while the animal seems fine and showing no obvious issues. To be safe, we are keeping the dog with us at all times. Unless we are outside (which is often right now) he stays indoors. When he's got to go, we go out with him. He's beginning to wonder what's up. He's usually the king of our fully fenced backyard, but the neighbor kids are always wanting to pet him.

The other day I took a class in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The instructor was a Chinese doctor, Dr. Chen, who spoke about the behavior of the Covid-19 as mentioned in the blog, except he went into more details. In China, the use of herbal medicine is very common and part of life, as opposed to Westerners who prefer only to use allopathic drugs. So, herbs were also part of the treatment protocol (conventional medicine was also used. But many Chinese opted for only herbs. He said 85% of 60,000 patients used herbs). The progression of the disease was broken down into 5 stages. Dr. Chen said there was a 100% prevention with herbal formulas in stage one, and a 70% to 80% recovery in stage 2,3, and 4. Stage 5 is trickier as that was "death imminent."

Because of the good success of the herbs, the Chinese are not allowing export because they don't want a shortage. However, you can still find some of the formulas in the US, although they are selling out pretty fast.

Work put out similar guidelines this week about drinking something every 15 minutes for the same reasons given above, and also provided cleaner to wipe down workstations twice a day in addition to hand sanitizer. By and large however our prevention method has been to send most of the staff home to work until this is over. We don't technically have to, given the essential nature of our business, but it seemed prudent to do so.

I am still going in to work for now, mostly because the industry still prefers paper corporate checks over electronic payments and I can't physically sign a check from home.

I am currently conducting a personal experiment on the effects of ingesting Coke Zero daily and coronavirus mortality. It will either do nothing, in which case I'll die of COVID-19, or it will successfully repel any COVID-19 infection, in which case I'll die from whatever newfound disease the soda will give me.

The important thing is that we'll know.

I can't go through the entire 3 hour lecture of formulas, it would be too confusing if you're not familiar with TCM. But, I will tell you the one formula they used in Stage One, which is when a person first feels ill and that is Yu Ping Feng San (Jade Windscreen Powder).

All the nurses in the hospitals who took this formula did not get ill.

Smells a bit off.

According to all verifiable information I have read, the virus does NOT cause a build up of thick mucus that blocks airways. Rather the disease is characterized by a DRY cough with direct damage to the lung sacs. Thick mucus is never mentioned anywhere, ever.

Not re-translating from the source, but there's two ways to take the sentence:

A. They discovered they need to unblock these airways so that when they apply medicine, the treatment can take effect.

B. They discovered they need to apply medicine to unblock these airways, so that [further] treatment can take effect.

They both make the point that the airway needs unblocking. Whether a medicine is used to do that is a minor detail.

Blogger glueballs March 21, 2020 10:59 PM

@41 Ralph

I have experienced respiratory illnesses and typically suffer thick mucous. I am believed to have contracted covid 19 and recovered for the most part (95% after six weeks).

The mucous I expressed was not thick and heavy but foamy. White foam for the first week or so I realized that I was sick, and then completely bloody hued foam – initially brown brick-colored foam and then deep dark red/purple bloody foam. Usually with bacterial infection the mucous I express is colored ranging from green, orange or yellow hues. No color the first period except white and then the blood. Terrible pain with each racking cough, but I never felt like I was drowning as with prior infections.

I gave whatever this bug is to my wife, who still feels like crap but is working full time in isolation and suffers a very dry cough without a lot of discernible mucous. YMMV.

Google is your friend.

https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-what-x-rays-and-ct-scans-reveal-about-how-covid-19-kills-11955988

"Post-mortem examinations in China of individuals who have died after contracting COVID-19 have revealed that these areas are being filled with a sticky mucus that literally prevents the patient from inhaling as there is no space for the air to enter."

https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200310/know-the-symptoms-of-covid19

"The most detailed breakdown of symptoms of the disease comes from a recent World Health Organization analysis of more than 55,000 confirmed cases in China. Here are the most common symptoms and the percentage of people who had them:

"...Dry cough: 68%..."
"...Coughing up sputum, or thick phlegm, from the lungs: 33%..."

I've been following this thing since late January. Mucus and phlegm production have been part of the description from the early days of this outbreak.

Here's a report from mid-February from a Chinese media source:

"According to CCTV (Chinese Central Television), mainland China finally completed the autopsy of the first patient who died of Covid-19 at 3 am on February 16, and successfully obtained the pathology of Covid-19. At 6:45 pm on the same day. The autopsy of the body of a second patient who died of Covid-19 was also successfully completed at Jinyintan Hospital. The two anatomy and pathology have been submitted for examination."

"He revealed that the lung of patients with Covid-19 is different from those infected with SARS. “The fibrosis in the lungs is not so severe as we expected. The final results have not come out yet. It seems that some alveoli are still there, but the inflammation is very severe and there is a lot of sticky mucus. This causes difficulty in breathing. Related research is still ongoing. “

Highly unlikely. It's much more likely that she's repeating this: A hoax social media message shared by millions of people is wrongly warning that the virus is being spread by people touching petrol pumps. The message, shared widely on Twitter and WhatsApp, claims that NHS officials had told staff that the 'virus seems to be spreading quickly via petrol pumps'.

If you want people to take you seriously, I would not advise repeating this sort of thing in ignorance.

Onion poultice is another old remedy for pneumonia as are (IIRC) castor oil packs.

My kids have had a cough for a while, and they typically do better when I diffuse oils and/or use a chest rub on them. I generally use lavender and either elemi or eucalyptus dives in the chest rub, but there are lots of recipes out there. There are also plenty of places selling blends. Just look for "kid safe" blends when appropriate. Not all oils are suitable for littles.

Blogger dweeb March 22, 2020 10:18 PM

@thechortling - if you search you'll find the WHO echoed the no ibuprofen guidance recently. They soft-backpedaled it later ("no longer recommends against using ibuprofen" which is not exactly saying ibuprofen is ok) without providing any basis for the change. One wonders if complaints from makers of ibuprofen had anything to do with it.
