"Hurting your witness"

Any self-professed Christian who uses the term "hurting your witness" in an attempt to police the behavior of Christians is almost certainly worshipping something that is not Jesus Christ.
Sadly, Christians seem to be disproportionately fooled by conspiracy theories. I’ve also said before that when Christians spread lies, they need to repent of those lies. Sharing fake news makes us look foolish and harms our witness.

We saw this in the last election when some of the troll factories focused on conservative, evangelical Christians. Here we go again.

What now?

First, we need to speak up— particularly to those fooled yet again— and lovingly say, "You need to go to trusted sources." Social media news feeds are not a trusted source. That's why we created coronavirusandthechurch.com, to provide credible information for pastors. But, there are plenty of credible news sources— generally from outlets that do not have a track record of conspiracy peddling.

Second, God has not called us to be easily fooled. Gullibility is not a Christian virtue. Believing and sharing conspiracies does not honor the Lord. It may make you feel better, like you are in the know, but it can end up harming others and it can hurt your witness.
I'm not saying this guy actually has small bodies buried in his garden or has visited Epstein's island, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to learn that he is a massive fan of Star Trek. Christians are supposed to follow the truth, and if there is one thing that we have learned over the years, it is that the truth is one thing in which "credible news sources" absolutely do not traffic. They are, in fact,  the primary factories of fake news.

You can always tell the Churchian because his primary concern is to avoid looking foolish in the eyes of the world.

Blogger Kraemer April 16, 2020 4:50 PM

There is something to the idea of hurting one's witness, which is why this wizard spell works so well. For instance, you cannot talk about family values if you're in a same-sex "marriage". However, the Churchian subversion argues that we should not question the evidently idiotic notions peddled by muh trusted sources

Blogger stevev April 16, 2020 5:10 PM

Well, it IS Christianity Today. I thought of them as converged even before I understood The Infernal Convergence.

His bio linked in the article says he is “frequently cited or interviewed in news outlets such as USAToday and CNN.” I think that’s all we need to know

Blogger Out of Nod April 16, 2020 5:27 PM

Looking at his Bio I see a few problems - missional communities is one of them. Group bible studies are replaced by these purposeless gatherings where people learn how to be social all over again.

Another item of note is that he is a regular contributor to USA Today and CNN. Yeah, totally not suspicious.

Blogger SirHamster April 16, 2020 5:30 PM

What's wrong with "hurting your witness"?

Christian, you are to speak the truth. The world will hate you and hurt you for your witness that Jesus is Lord.

Hurting the witness is what the world does. Don't fear hurting witness, but speak truthfully because you belong to God, and because you do not belong to the father of lies.

Next thing this guy is going to do is claim Bill Gates is God's Gift to Mankind.

You'd think that the acknowledgement of evil and power corrupting would make us more skeptical of trusting sources that aren't above propaganda. But this guy isn't skeptical enough. Who's most like to be the "gullible" one?

Vox, I'm only a casual science fiction reader but I've always enjoyed "classic" Star Trek with Kirk and his space babe of the week.

What is the association with perverts and Star Trek?

I know Roddenberry was immoral and perhaps much worse. I also know much of what I enjoy about the show was contributed by others, some of whom seem like genuinely decent people.

Oh man. It's obvious when you spell it out, especially considering the 1970s reboot and the second series that renounced everything likable about the original.

How do my kids put it? "Ooof."

Blogger AndyT April 16, 2020 5:51 PM

He's not wrong that it makes huge chunks of the population look stupid when you have supposedly educated people burning down the wrong type of cell phone towers in response to half-baked conspiracies. It's like the masses in Africa having sex with virgins to cure HIV.

It sounds like a pointless reaction to the "problem" of "big church pastor refuses to shutdown (so that donations don't stop), then dies from COVID-19".

They worship money anyways, so no big loss.

Blogger Phelps April 16, 2020 6:10 PM

This plague is God's judgment on His church, preventing us from worshiping together, and it is because of false teachers like this sodomite.

How is THAT for a witness?

Blogger Joe Smith April 16, 2020 6:11 PM

At the end there's an update where the writer writes this:

"Just after the publication of the blog, John Roberts from FoxNews—a mainstream and legitimate news division—asked president Trump about the connection to a lab in China. That question, and the stories that followed, does not really change my point—the conspiracy was that it was created in a lab as a bioweapon. Thus, if a natural virus was being studied in a lab and accidentally escaped, the point still stands."

In other words, even the normies now know that the conspiracy theorists were right, but he is too petty a faggot to admit it. He has managed to build a model of the world in which he was technically correct (the best kind of correct).

Blogger Nikolai Collushnikov April 16, 2020 6:15 PM

A quote from the article: "But, there are plenty of credible news sources— generally from outlets that do not have a track record of conspiracy peddling."

Well, given the mainstream "news" strongly pushed the now vastly discredited "Trump/Russian collusion" conspiracy theory for three straight years, that would leave out CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, BCC, FOX, PBS, NYT and the news feeds of all the tech giants, just were is the "plenty of credible" "news sources" we are supposed to follow?

Blogger Steve Canyon April 16, 2020 6:16 PM

Blogger sammibandit April 16, 2020 6:22 PM

Social media news feeds are not a trusted source. That's why we created coronavirusandthechurch.com, to provide credible information for pastors.

You can't trust social media so here is a social media platform for you to trust. But only for pastors, okay.

So, can we agree that the 5G cell towers, vaccines, bioweapons, and others ARE NOT a conspiracy? Probably not everyone weill see that, but most can. And, my point here still remains. And I’ve edited the article to make that point clearer.

Physiognomy analysis:

I tried to go into this with an open mind, but before the picture loaded I was reading about how he "trained pastors and church planters on six continents." So I expected to find a narcissist and did.

His grimacing smile indicates that he is unduly proud of his good front teeth and puts them forward to distract from how he's falling apart.

Receding hairline, severe bags under his eyes (to which he matched the color of his eyeglass frames for some reason), and the weird tilt plus the scraggly goatee is presumably intended to distract you from the massive double chin.

The man is not only self-indulgent but outright dissipated, and also vain.
(His hair color does not match the length of his earlobes, and also is too uniform; he's dying to look younger.)

Clinging to youth is a sign of homosexuality and/or immaturity, since women are not averse to an older man who has his s@#$ together. And also, being both vain and bad at it is a sign of midwittery, since people either smarter or dumber can tell when they're not succeeding.

So his claim to two doctorates is just cringe-worthy credentialism. I doubt that he could give a decent challenge to even the most stoned and poorly-read college dorm atheist.

In sum, all things considered, I would not trust Ed Stetzer alone in a tent with a 15-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl, or a cake or pie of any vintage. And certainly not with the disposition of anyone's immortal soul.

And this is the guy who presumes to lecture us about the credibility of our witness. Truly, SJWs always project.

I posted this online, alone with a link to your post:

"I'm really dissapointed in all the those Christians sharing conspiracy theories, you are so, so, so bad. It's not like our government just announced they want to track all our movements from now on or anything...oh wait...

If you think basing all your knowledge of this situation only on official government releases and mainstream media is being a responsible Christian, you have it completely backwards. The media gets caught lying ALL THE time, especially when they all agree. Fake news is their speciality.

Media's correct role is to question power, but our media has cosyed up with it. The fourth estate parks itself at the feet of power, to get access. If you don't know this, you are not informed enough to criticize anyone who presents an alternative.

It's not an irresponsible conspiracy theory to say there are other forces at play here. It's a Christian worldview which says that. After all Paul said, our world is manipulated by powerful unseen forces.

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." (Ephesians 6:12).

Having an understanding that something else is going on, is not irresponsible witness, it's the correct, and only faithful Christian worldview. My observation is conspiracy theorists get stuff wrong, a lot, but not as much as the media. After all, just a few months ago the media was saying that anyone who said this came out of a lab was a conspiracy theorist. But now many mainstream sources, are saying that very thing. But the conspiracy theorists sense that more is going on, is the correct biblical worldview."

Hopefully it encourages more of the likeminded to speak up.

Thanks for all you do here at this blog, Vox and the Dread Ilk and others.

It's been a great encouragement to my faith.

I keep coming back to this: Jesus wasn't nice. If you're going to be like Jesus, you can't be nice. Jesus said mean, hurtful things to people. Jesus assaulted people with whips. It is not recorded that Jesus ever said ``Fuck you Greta,'' but there is no reason to say He would never have said it.

If Greta ever repents, God will welcome her. God loves her even if she never repents, and He'll send her to hell if she doesn't. If you love people, you will smack 'em around when they need it. That's why Jesus called the Pharisees vipers and whitewashed tombs, that's why He assaulted the crooks in the Temple: He loved them.

``Fuck you Greta'' sounds like tough love, like the kind of thing Jesus might have said to her.

He probably would have said it to her face, and not put it on a bumper sticker, but we don't have His resources.

The Gospel, Christ's crucifixion, death, and resurrection to effect the salvation of the world was a divine conspiracy and utterly hidden before it was revealed by the resurrection.

"But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory..." I Corinthians 2:7-8 NASB

It is also "foolishness" to the world.

"We preach Christ (the Messiah) crucified, which to the Jews is a scandal and an offensive stumbling block that springs a snare or trap, and to the Gentiles it is absurd and utterly unphilosophical nonsense."
I Corinthians 1:23 (Amplified Classic)

As a new Christian who could be a bit overzealous and relentlessly logical in my witness and so was many times being criticized for the WAY I was witnessing, I'd end up asking my various pastors and mentors, "Is there any place in the Bible where God chastised a preacher or prophet for the WAY he delivered God's message?" I meant by that, for example, Jonah WANTED everyone in Nineveh to be destroyed and was angry when they repented! Yet the only thing God criticized Jonah for was for being upset that He'd shown them compassion. And no record Jonah ever repented for his crappy prophet attitude.

It seemed to me at the time, and still does, that all God cared about was the actual message being delivered.

@34 "The witness can only be false or true. He is a Judaizer." - Well said!

There's something profoundly wrong with using the Christian concept of witnessing and testimony for earthly propaganda purposes. It's supposed to be about communicating your religious experience.

Catchphrases like that sometimes start out legitimate. The red flag is when the words diverge from the meaning being expressed through them. Once that happens you can be sure the father of lies in involved.

"No. Jesus never chastised people unless it was a teaching moment. Either for the chastised, or the onlooker."

Dubious assertion. Look at Jesus before Pilate.

"Paul's mother is no longer a space nun/concubine, but a warrior space nun. Had such high hopes for the movie."

The Liet-Kynes part is unforgivable of itself, but to be fair to the rest, the Bene-Gesserit were always unabashed evil space-witches with the garb of nuns and their own signature martial arts.

"There's something profoundly wrong with using the Christian concept of witnessing and testimony for earthly propaganda purposes. It's supposed to be about communicating your religious experience."

"Hurt your witness" is a tactic to peer-pressure you out of pointing out that evil people exist. Smell the humanism yet?

"This world is so complicated"

"Sophisticated."

"trusted sources"

That would be the Bible, then. He can't mean the media, because, as their behaviour over the last few years has ably demonstrated, they can't be trusted with anything, least of all the responsibility of telling the truth.

Blogger Damelon Brinn April 17, 2020 8:26 AM

Shouldn't the phrase be "harm our testimony?"

Thank you. Seeing "witness" used like that puts my teeth on edge, but I was having trouble thinking of the right word, and that's it.

What is the association with perverts and Star Trek?

As others have said, police noticed it when they busted pedophiles.

My theory: Star Trek (mainly TNG and Voyager) presents a future human society that is tolerant to an *extreme* degree. Anything goes except the bad old things like racism and sexism and (human) religions. Many times they encounter an alien race that does something we don't like, and say something like, "We respect all cultures, no matter how repellent we find their ways." They even have a rule about it called the Prime Directive, that says they don't interfere with "undeveloped" cultures no matter what they're doing on their planets.

It's not hard to see why a pedophile would imagine that that society would tolerate his particular "quirk" the way it does everything else. The shows never have an episode that says that outright; but if you assume, as pedophiles do, that their attraction to children is just another perfectly normal and good letter in the LGBTQP soup that hasn't gained acceptance yet, it's probably easy for them to believe it will in time for Captain Picard to give a speech in their defense.

I have always found Christianity Today to be a trusted source for stupid, trendy ideas that I should dismiss out of hand. Their name sums them up: a focus on appealing to the world here and now instead of contending for the faith once and for all delivered to the saints. They have forgotten this verse, and the other one that says friendship with the world is enmity with God. Assuming they ever read them in the first place.

You know what I find interesting about some of these "hurt your witness types"? They like to say, and I paraphrase, " Judge not less you be judged yourself" to try to put an end to a discussion (or argument) that they don't want to talk about. I have taken to saying something like "Okay" I will take that hit. I will be judged in the same manner that I am judging the other person. I have been very surprised how stunned they look, and how they just shut down – they don’t know what to do. You take it from there; I have always been able to “eat them alive” because at their heart, my experience is that most are cowards.

I know a preacher who uses this exact Churchian logic, is a massive star Trek fan, has glasses and a goatee. Why do they always have glasses and a goatee?

Blogger Oswald April 17, 2020 10:50 AM

I remember Jesus saying somewhere when it was brought to his attention that people that were not his disciples were driving out demons with his name and that his disciples tried to stop them, he told them "Don't try to stop them, for anyone not against us is with us." He did not say "They are hurting our witness."

Also, I remember that when Pompey was besieging Jerusalem he observed the Jews in the middle of the siege continued to run the temple offerings at full speed. He was impressed with their zealousness for their God.

Therefore, are the chruches being zealous or are they being lukewarm in the current situation. I am glad that Vox brought this to our attention. I went to the website mentioned above: They seem to have their priorities mixed up. The church first and foremost, must be concerned with the souls of members. The bodies of the members are secondary. They seem to have that backwards. I encourage every reader here to go and look at this site. Pay attention to who is there, and recognize that if they are there, they cannot be trusted, because they are deceived at some level.

I have come to realize this to be true. If a person is afraid, then they are likely deceived on some spiritual point.

Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life! (1 Corinthians 6:2–3) So, fix that abominable goatee or be thrown out with the goats...

MC wrote:I know a preacher who uses this exact Churchian logic, is a massive star Trek fan, has glasses and a goatee. Why do they always have glasses and a goatee?
Maybe homage to their real father? Reminiscent of Jesus in John 8:44 "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it."
Like father, like son?

They weren't teachable moments or other modern Bableshit. They were outright judgements on the unrepentant. The only teaching is in the macro sense that all the Bible is for our instruction. He was calling them out, directly and without equivocation, something we all could learn and Vox is trying to teach us to do if we claim to follow Jesus Christ.

@98 Ingemar:

Yes, that is an absolutely blood-boiling assertion. Parents and pastors who subscribe to that nonsense reveal themselves to be no different than secular parents who subject their children to the satanic hell that is government day prison for children: they are lazy, selfish, and have no interest whatsoever in investing time, money, or effort in the moral, spiritual, and intellectual development of their own children.

I wish more Christians in America realized that the world they live in is much closer to the demonically controlled, despotic pagan regime of the first century Roman Empire, than it is to whatever biblical-based society the Plymouth-rock puritans tried (and failed) to establish.

That's what the phrase should be if it was about warning against hypocrisy.

But "hurt your witness" is a rhetorical spell to get the listening Christians afraid of hurt and getting them to be quiet.

This is an inversion of the Christian's charge to be a bold witness, even and especially when it leads to getting hurt.

Ominous Cowherd wrote:How about e.g.: Fuck you, Greta!

While direct, "Fuck You" at some level is crude and lacking in style.

Consider what is being communicated when Jesus asks the legal experts who spent their whole life studying the Law if they had read their subject of study.

"Or haven't you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent?"

I'm a fan of "Shut Up, Gretard"

Churchians forget the command to be in the world but not of it.

They just want to be popular so bad. Christianity needs to be medieval again. Vigorous, strong, alpha, bravo, delta men who lead with competence to Christ and to build God's world.

Christendom needs to return. These types should be in no way leaders or intellectually respected.

As others have noted, post-scarcity socialist atheist utopia. As other have not noted, it is also about alienation, both from home and from humanity in general, with a dollop of structurally impermanent sexual fantasies thrown in to the extent it would be permitted at the time. Finally, it has a spastiche of Captain Cook/Lewis & Clark style bold exploration IN SPAAAAACE thrown over the top as the bait for young males.

Let's see, alienated, cerebrally-inclined young males. God and societal sanity excluded. Sounds like yesteryear's pedophile target classification schema.
