Jordanetics happened

A writer at New Republic wonders whatever happened to Jordan Peterson, the erstwhile self-appointed secular saviour of humanity:
The Canadian psychology professor Jordan Peterson has been described as “the most influential public intellectual in the Western world.” He is an exponent of the Jungian concept of the hero’s journey, in which an ordinary person heeds a call to adventure and goes out into the world to struggle and suffer, only to return with heightened self-knowledge. (He has described himself, without apparent irony, as being “raised and toughened in the frigid wastelands of Northern Alberta.”) His stern ethos of self-help and bootstrapping has made him a darling of the so-called intellectual dark web, and a gateway drug for countless budding right-wingers who have stumbled upon one of his lectures on YouTube.

So it was something of a surprise to learn, in early February, that Peterson had spent eight days in a medically induced coma at an unnamed clinic in Russia.... If Peterson’s sad story has a moral, it’s that a drug problem is neither a dragon to be slain nor a sin to be ashamed of. It’s a mundane health problem that should be treated scientifically, without heroics.
I tend to disagree. The real moral is this: it is unwise to elevate gammas to positions of leadership, intellectual or otherwise. Peterson always knew he was a fraud, so the psychological shock of being so brutally and publically exposed as an intellectual charlatan was more than he could take without retreating into chemical reinforcement of his delusion bubble, especially when his wife's reported illness deprived him of her maternalesque support.

To say that I was not surprised by Peterson's retreat from the public stage would be an understatement. I fully expected some sort of theatrical dramatics from Peterson, I simply didn't know what form it would take. I was assuming it would probably be some sort of fake overdose on Vitamin C or something equally ridiculous. "Definitely not meth" most certainly exceeded my expectations.

Predictive models. It's all about the predictive models.

A "mundane health problem that should be treated scientifically"? Junkies are junkies mostly because they can't deal with their lives, and despite many claims to the contrary, science has never come up with a way to fix your f-ed up life. At best SCIENCE! manages to give you replacement problems for your existing ones.

Blogger cecilhenry April 28, 2020 7:55 AM

IT ended when he said 'I can't do it, no I just can't' in reference to the Jewish question.

That was his dragons... from then on it was just propaganda, not truth.

No matter how well spoken the propaganda.

Blogger Solon April 28, 2020 8:05 AM

"A drug problem is not a sin to be ashamed of."

Yes. It is.

Shame is a powerful motivator to be a morally upstanding and physically healthy person. Look at what has happened when society has removed shame from the public discourse: obesity being celebrated, women whoring themselves out online, drug addicts provided safe, medically assisted clinics to shoot up in, murdering infants lauded as "empowering and brave," the list goes on and on, and if you oppose any of that, you're a bigot and possibly a nazi.

They've weaponized shame for their own ends. If ever you needed proof that Satan is real, turn on the news for five minutes.

Fortunately, the public is waking up to this game and pushing back, in small ways, but that is all it takes.

They want to call me a nazi because I oppose abortion and fear God? Well then, seig heil. They brought this upon themselves.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan April 28, 2020 8:35 AM

Another debt owed to Vox, I myself knew within seconds of hearing Peterson's shtick he was yet another right wing fraud, but it took a more talented person to put an ice pick in that balloon.

Speaking of shame, in the West we are men without GAME. Literally men reduced to "Orbiter" status, especially the intellectuals, but no class of men escape the shame of no GAME. Except maybe Trump and that is because he never got caught in the moronic gimpiness of conservatism.

I agree entirely. I may catch a gamma label here, (from earlier inspirational post) but a huge part of the reason I dont watch professional sports is that individual drive and success stories aside, there seems to be a focus on excusing and/or enabling behavior that in a civilized society would have players fired, and made unusable simply because they can catch or throw a ball. The owners (pro teams) don't care, the school systems (college level) dont care. Instead of using the lure of wealth and fame to enforce higher moral standards it seems that evil is overlooked along as the organization can make money.

I treat substance disorders.

What’s funny is Peterson actually mentioned a great means of “recovery,” which is a total change in personality, usually accomplished through things like religious conversion. Too bad his religion is problematic.

No, substance use disorders certainly are not solely a medical/health problem. A moral component is a large part.

First Jordanetics happened.

Then the events described by Jordanetics happened - ironically Peterson's second most important rule to live by "take your pills" was his undoing.

And now he and his awful advice is but a memory, as should be.

Having just left Romanism for Orthodoxy and reeling from having misplaced my trust in those internet trad-cats who stylize themselves as thoroughly learned in all things Christian, a friend recommend Peterson and I flatly refused to listen to him, not wanting to be duped again by confidence men (or women). "Thanks, sounds interesting, but I'll pass. Orthodoxy or nothing for me at the moment." Plus, the 5 minutes I heard of eterson sounded, well, slippery.

That's about the same time Vox started talking about him and then criticizing him.

So glad I never wasted any time on that snake oil saleman. He is the definition of 'word salad.' He is a metaphysical yard sale. He has no clue what he's saying, no real grasp of the definitions of the terms he's using. But he dresses those talks with effulgence, self-help triumphalism, the occasional moment of candor, and a tone and atmosphere of deep contemplativeness... and people are sold.

Thanks Vox for calling out a charlatan. It confirmed my instincts and intuition, and Wisdom, and thusly I wasted not a minute of my life on him.

Blessed is the man that has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly.

I think back to my Bucko adjacent month. When he was just a college professor, I watched some lectures and learned something about the Jungian breakdowns of things. It was interesting and you can tell he knows what he is doing. Then he got big, and it was just the same show over and over.

I read the first 4 chapters of 12Rules and I couldn't finish because I started getting the idea what he wasn't talking to me. The chapter titles were getting more disjoint and it seemed more about him than about me. It all came full circle when that black pastor guy(Dyson) was really tearing him down, and the response wasn't even a real defense. They both gave a very (what I can look back on and call) gamma level response in the after interviews.

Given his belief that hallucinogenic mushroom trips are literally a conversation with his "God..." Jordan Peterson would agree with that sentence.

I don't understand all the theatrics. Would it really have been that hard to say all the travel and attention caused a lot of stress and that he needed a break? For that matter, did he really even need an excuse. He could have taken a vacation without comment.
But what else can you expect from a guy who cries on camera talking about Pinocchio and dresses like a frog?

And that's the crux of the entire problem today. There's a reason pride is considered one of the 7 capital sins. God forbid someone shame someone else for doing something stupid. You've got to be able to take the punches if you're openly willing to take the falls.

I think I hit my limit with "pride" last summer when the entire month of June was flooded with everything and anything LGBTZOMGWTFBBQ as far as the eye could see. To base your entire existence on what you stimulate yourself with is about as tone deaf as you can get. There are those of us on the normal side that (I would hope) should feel shame about the random hookups we've had over the courses of our lives.

Shame is healthy. Shame should want you to do better. Embrace shame, but don't let it consume you. It should always be a reminder of what could be if you don't keep on yourself to do better.

I wonder if an initial disclosure of gammatude excuses the screed that follows. Nah. Throwing and catching balls regularly and competently is freaking hard, there's no "simply" about it. There's no focus on excusing bad conduct but rather a balancing. There are lots of frame ups too. Politicians get away with worse regularly. As an aside, I'm guessing these lockdown doctors not concerned about - or maybe relishing - the disruption of pro sports are getting jollies. Are you?

Many may say that they saw right through the Doctor. Good job. Not me. I was taken in by the stand against forced speech up there in Toronto. I shall be grateful so long as I breathe for Vox's unimpeachable analysis of all that was and is wrong with the messages and the man. A lot of posts by people that claimed Vox was the real conman and not Peterson have aged so badly I can't even go back and read them. Of course, they'll never admit they were full of shit, but then again if they ever had any shred of humility in them they wouldn't have defended Peterson even after he blacklisted Faith Goldy.

Glad I never bothered with the fraud. It was a good exercise in learning to look for signs in a charlatan.

"It's a mundane health problem that should be treated scientifically"

There is no scientific treatment for addiction. Or rather for addiction beyond the basic chemical level. Hence all the relapses and the kabillions of dollars people waste on quacks.

Not even sure we have the correct abstract notion of what it is, let alone a scientific one. This la-di-da attitude of "mundane health science" I find absurd.

Blogger tublecane April 28, 2020 12:44 PM

@5- I'd say Peterson was a fraud intended to prevent people from falling into the right. Because he certainly never claimed to be a rightist or even opposed to the ruling order. Except as regards pronoun usage.

Rather, he was flying above it all, with Nazis and commies trapped in pyramids below, or however that dream went.

Re: "If Peterson’s sad story has a moral, it’s that a drug problem is neither a dragon to be slain nor a sin to be ashamed of."
Using a premise I posted on "This is Why You Never Give UP" about the gamma C.S. Lewis character in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" who becomes a dragon and encounters the nexus point of his life, which I believe is fundamental to who we become. Eustace, in effect, slays his dragon, while Peterson, faced with a similar choice, does not. Eustace moves on from his gammahood with the help of Aslan/Jesus Christ, while Peterson does not. We all face various dragons that need to be slayed in the course of our lives and in many ways they are crux of our moral and spiritual journey, determining the path our lives will take from that point forward.

Do we always succeed. No. But, how we face those failures determine the course of our lives from that point forward. There is a proverb "As a tree falls, so shall it lie" that alludes to a verse in scripture that I have always found prescient, Ecclesiastes 11:3 "If the clouds are full of rain, They empty themselves upon the earth; And if a tree falls to the south or the north, In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie." NKJV Trials (the rain) bring tests, weakening our roots and attempting to make us fall. When in life is that choice or fall permanent? I believe it depends on our choice.

While there is life there is hope of change and redemption, but it seems for some there is a final choice, from which, they will not deviate. I pray for Peterson's sake there is still hope of change for him. However, for so many on the scene today, it appears they have made their final choice and in the direction they shall forever lie.
