Socialgalactic discourse

@fubear: I have observed that efficient access to the beer cooler is essential enough that masked people will get shoulder to shoulder with their fellow man. The winos still maintain 6’.

@voxday: Of course peasants don’t mind crowding. We civilized people prefer to maintain a civilized - and healthy - distance from the unwashed masses. I generally try to maintain social distancing of at least one kilometer.

Then again 1.5 SD is usually sufficient for all practical social distancing purposes.

We are living in the age of the one-paper joint.

Blogger Damelon Brinn April 25, 2020 9:58 AM

When this started, I joked to someone that around here, if you're much closer than 6' to someone and you're not getting busy, you were already leaning on their personal bubble.

Bourbon drinkers are sitting alone or puking in the bushes.

The curse of the High IQ is really a blessing. No crowding at the gun range this morning, none in the woods either.

And my Bury's is enough to tell the random passerby that perhaps I am not one for chit chat.

I love it that people leave me the hell alone. I'm dedicating this weekend to honoring the Great and Merciful Corona-Chan.

Blogger Newscaper312 April 25, 2020 10:35 AM

I wonder if the homeless/bums supposedly having much lower incidence of serious corona than everyone expected is because they are outside more, getting more vitamin D. Yes the general public already tried not to get too close, but they congregate more freely among themselves, right? In shelters, soup kitchens etc.

Vox, I just finished A Throne of Bones. My jaw was on the floor last night, and I immediately bought Sea of Skulls, and read the first two chapters.

The many twists at the end of the first volume were amazing. Also, I was most impressed how you wrote the battle at the end between Marcus' troops and Magnus'. It was quite exciting how you start with the perspective of one man -- let's follow his story for a bit, start to get into it and OOPS he dies... then lets go to the guy who took him down, and follow his story a while, and BAM he's killed... then snap to the perspective of the slingers who took HIM down... and on and on. THAT is the best battle scene I think I've ever read in a fantasy novel.

I'm gobsmacked at how good this book is, and as soon as I finish Sea of Skulls, I'll read Summa Elvetica, then start Throne of Bones again. Hopefully I can find a better map of the continent online than the one in the Kindle edition.

As I said in my short rating on Amazon, "Bravo, Vox Day!"

Slam bourbon, and you don't need a mask to keep you safe. Aloeless hand sanitizer knocks Corona-Chan out like a light.

What exactly is an SD?

@LR27,

“SD” is Supreme Dark, a cocktail of valpolicella and SJW tears, quaffed from silvered skulls.

(or, Standard Deviation)

Omega strategy is to make others want to keep their distance.

Blogger Kraemer April 25, 2020 12:06 PM

Slightly OT, but does a SG invite still come with a basic UATV subscription? I subscribed to UATV in February, and I'm not able to find any invites in my email inbox, or the spam, or anywhere else for that matter

Blogger Scott April 25, 2020 12:18 PM

Standard Deviation, in reference to IQ.

Blogger Taqiyyotomist April 25, 2020 12:21 PM

Oh, put a sock in it. It's a good book.

Standard Deviation. For IQ distribution in people.

Blogger Sgt Polite April 25, 2020 12:48 PM

LR27- SD is a standard deviation. In this case in regards to IQ.

If it is not impertinent to ask, do you have an idea when SocialGalactic will open up to the general public?

The Plague Princess and the aircraft carrier teach us that many of us never get it even when exposed, and that most of us who do get it don't have serious problems from it. That's two interesting empirical regularities that we don't understand at all.

On the Plague Princess, with no effective quarantine for a week or more, with everybody stewing in the virus, roughly 80% never got it.
On the aircraft carrier, with some quarantine measures taken as soon as the first symptoms popped up, 86% never got it.

That suggests to me that all of our social distancing stuff might make a 6% difference in how many people ultimately get this. Pick a CFR - maybe 2%. Shutting down the economy for months might save 0.06*0.02=0.0012 of the population. With the Trump Cure, the CFR should be one hundredth of that anyway. We might be saving 0.000012 of the population. That's around 4,000 people who might be saved by the shutdown.

Like they said in the Donner Party, when the food is all gone, we'll still have each other.

Blogger Bobiojimbo April 25, 2020 1:21 PM

I chuckled lightly to myself, and smirked. Thanks.

Blogger VD April 25, 2020 1:29 PM

It may never do so. Everyone seems to like it the way it is now.

Blogger VD April 25, 2020 1:30 PM

Yes. Send me an email that mentions your UATV subscription level.

I’m hoping Trump begins evangelizing some Knob Creek or Highland Park Scotch:
“Maybe we could somehow inject it into the body” winks for Hillary.

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim April 25, 2020 4:36 PM

Ha! I thought he was using 1.5 Supreme Darklords as a measurement the way BB uses Rogans.

Blogger SamuraiJeff April 25, 2020 5:16 PM

I'm an electrician. I go into people's homes regularly. I wear a mask out of respect but tell them they don't have to wear one around me. I don't believe it's even a real thing. So far everybody has been healthy and the people who don't believe are having a great time with their families. Old people and all.

In the end when we look back I know the people who were the most scared and irrational will just act like they were doing the right thing

Blogger Kraemer April 25, 2020 5:19 PM

Done and dusted. Thanks!

Blogger Zaklog the Great April 25, 2020 6:05 PM

@26 I have to admit I'm disappointed, but it's your business. Complaining about this would make me a bit of an ass.

Blogger Nihil Dicit April 25, 2020 8:45 PM

Beer cooler vs. brown paper bag. It's the timeless contrast between public goods and private property. Of course winos keep their distance, they ain't about sharin'.

Blogger Nihil Dicit April 25, 2020 8:49 PM

@33 - The "general public" is, at best, a nuisance. Maintaining quality virtually requires maintaining exclusivity.

Blogger Geir Balderson April 25, 2020 8:56 PM

I have been preparing for this social distancing all of life. Vindication is sweet!

Blogger jkmack April 26, 2020 8:01 AM

@33 Surely you realize that Social Galactic is already open to the general public for a nominal fee to unauthorized.tv or support to various other of VoxDay's endeavors?

All of which are quite the value in and of themselves, so much so, as to render the addition of SG as a bonus which actually feels like a bonus.

Blogger Miguel April 26, 2020 4:28 PM

Vox,

I have tried to reset my password but the recovery email is not getting into my mail account. I am Lucas Viriato.
