The Devil Mouse is dying

Corona-chan has hit the Devil Mouse hard:
Media industry analyst Hal Vogel estimated that Disney is losing roughly $30 million a day amid the coronavirus pandemic, The New York Times reported. Disney has closed its theme parks and cruise lines, and has postponed the releases of several films, including Black Widow and Mulan, leading to massive drops in revenue as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread.

Disney’s focus on “experiences” over “on-screen entertainment” was once both coveted and imitated, but is now completely impossible to execute amid a pandemic that forces everyone to socially distance.

Even Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, which is ideal for those staying inside, and reportedly racked up 50 million subscribers in 5 months is financially struggling due to the lack of new content, as all entertainment productions have come to a standstill.

The combination of these losses led Disney to borrow $6 billion last month, and they continue to lose “$30 million or more a day,” according to Vogel.
I really don't see how Marvel stays alive in this scenario. They're getting hit from both ends, by Disney and by Diamond, as the struggles of the former make it difficult to bail them out from the situation created by the non-payments of the latter. The challenges facing the establishment comics is why we are now redoubling our efforts to produce new content and why we are supporting The Legend in his latest endeavor.

Paper tigers.
With tv's getting bigger and costs of distribution lowering because of streaming services a good bet is that the cinema industry itself will have to adapt its business model. However people will still want to watch movies while also seeking social interaction. Who knows, maybe in the future we'll see food joints and movie screens joined together in something akin to those Korean Karaoke bars.

I remember when people said Disney was indestructible, that they had so much money and so much control over the industry that it didn't matter how bad their product got. It seems like only weeks ago. Wait, it was only weeks ago.

Bah what is 14 Billion? They can imagine many billions more, as many as necessary, controlling the culture is priceless, however imaginary (usunary?) billions are dirty cheap to come by ball pen standards... oh wait they do not use those any-more either since they use computers...

Modern usury sure is so efficient that making it even more efficient would contradict the laws of physics.

However rest assured the best (((minds))) are hard at work to crack that nut.

Something tells me that if it had been producing something beside rehashed garbage for the last several decades people would be more willing to jump into the Disney stream. New ain't everything. We get diminishing returns from fresh entertainment if it's also crappy.

That's not to touch the Bonfire of Western Civilization aspect. Which sounds more exciting than it is. Their cultural destruction is dreadfully boring, in fact.

I believe that the end of May is when the next quarterly earnings has to be released. That is when the headsmen will be sent for and the ax will fly. Look for questions about what does ESPN bring to the party? And why are we providing White People Welfare at Marvel?

This couldn't have come at a worse time for Disney. They overpaid for Fox by billions.

So what is in the tea leaves for Disney?

One, I suspect Marvel Comics is going to be shutdown. It was a hobby/money-loser for Bob Iger. He could tolerate it because Woke Marvel gave him cool points on the cocktail party circuit.

But as of now, there are no sales outlets for Marvel Comics other than E-books and direct mail. Marvel has gone from a money loser to a complete money loser and “Budget-Cut Bob Cheapak,” is the new CEO of Disney. Look for Marvel Comics to be shutdown in the next month. When it revives it will be as a franchise that is farmed out to a third party provider.

Two, EPCOT in Disney World may take a serious hit. It was already mostly closed for renovations but that money has most likely been re-earmarked for survival. It may be shut for a year.

Getting things up and running again won't be easy, there will have to be a lot of repairs to things that broke down just sitting there.

And the longer this goes on, the more people are going to move out of Orlando. Florida is TERRIBLE for Unemployment, I think it's only something like $250 a week.

Blogger Nihil Dicit April 14, 2020 8:42 AM

the lack of new content

Disney hasn't had any "new content" in 30 years, just like the rest of Hollywood.

If people are unwilling to attend sporting events without a vaccine, who's going to stand in line with the rest of the unwashed to ride the Korona Kars at Disney World? If they have to practice social distancing waiting for the rides, those lines will stretch to Pensacola.

The Corona-chan Collapse ain't no normal "downturn"; now everybody's going to see who's been walking around naked, hiding behind all the free money being sprayed around for the last decade. Even going all NIRPly won't save most of 'em, repo market's already shown that.

If Walt was still alive, he'd go to a distributed production model, where he'd have multiple 6 man teams working on various projects. Closed parks? No problem, you can use those same actors for live entertainment online. There are plenty of wealthy people stuck in their homes without much to do, so why not expand the Disney + service to include a Disney Land adventure? Sure, it might flop, but if you're already spending 30 million to do nothing, why not spend the money to do SOMETHING?

I wouldn't say a ton of opportunities. Not a ton. No.

But I suspect that there are going to be some fairly big changes on the other side of this.

Nine figure budgets just aren't going to happen because no one will have that kind of money available to gamble on a movie. AMC is trading for penny stock and may fold outright. If it does there goes the biggest theater chain in America.

Streaming is a ravenously hungry medium. And everyone is streaming now.

The studios are going to need a LOT of medium budget projects that can be produced quickly. So long as you aren't waving your Pepe flag high you might be able to slip beneath a studio's radar if they think you are making something else.

Look at 300. Warner Brothers had no idea what the core message of that movie was until after it was released.

Blogger nswhorse April 14, 2020 11:18 AM

Genuine history question: did the Devil Mouse become the Devil Mouse following Walt's death, as his successors took over and dragged the company in a different, evil direction; or was Walt himself a subversive seeking to undermine the West from the start? I suspect the latter, but I have never looked into the history of the company and its founder enough to know for sure.

My bet is that they'll double, triple and quadruple down. Note that Bob Iger is back in charge of Devil Mouse, despite his announced departure barely a month ago. I also have a family member who works in safety at Universal Studios (across the road from Devil Mouse) which is naturally run by SJWs as well. No signs of them changing their tune. The opportunity to create your own content and platforms is greater than ever and will accelerate as fast as Coronachan if the great reveal actually happens. Walt was part of the club by the way. It's been the Devil Mouse since day one.

Never gonna happen, my friend. In the mass media, you even give an inkling of leaning into the alt-right spectrum and you are persona non grata until death.

It's why we have horrible entertainment nowadays. They're not into entertaining as they are propagandizing into their sick little SJW cult.

@20- There was a time when right-wing culture, having been driven out of high- and middle-brow arts could find a home in the low-brow. The world of pulp fiction doesn't tend to be egalitarian. See Conan the Barbarian or Dirty Harry for instance.

These days, however, the left has infiltrated and undermined absolutely everything. They take what they like and abandon or burn down the rest. They enjoy Film Noir, for instance, because they view them as transgressive. The 1940s and 50s were a time when people couldn't fling their genitals at eachother willy-nilly. In the underworld of the night, however, secret Freudian motives have free play. Supposedly. When in reality these movies usually had the sort of clear morals today's left would kill itself to avoid entertaining.

What's interesting is that Gamers in contrast to "conservatives" have been trained by their conflict orientated games to deal with and overcome overwhelming odds again and again.

This is why Gamergate was so successful by comparison because Gamers were trained to be relentless in pursuit of victory.

>"you might be able to slip beneath a studio's radar if they think you are making something else"

Cataline, I believed such things for years. It is vain. There is no opportunity for anyone good to be part of the mainstream. The business, the culture, is designed to shut out such people, except, in the past, in technical fields. The most you could hope for then was to lie low and go into special effects, writing software, cobbling together computers, woodworking, pyrotechnics, etc. Even that is dicey now thanks to "corporate cancer." Anyway, most underground conservatives on the technical side of the business are getting close to retirement and that redoubt is becoming a thing of the past.

Take it from me. "The studios" don't want us. It's their racket, it isn't for us.

The solution is to roll our own, from concept to distribution. This isn't a downer, it's the path forward.
