Affirmative action and the NFL

The NFL is bewildered by the fact that the very people who are supposed to be benefiting from their proposed new SJW program are opposed to it:
Last Friday, news that the NFL would consider incentivizing minority hires for general manager and top coaching positions boomeranged around the league. It elicited an array of questions: How would this work? Would it make a difference? And for some black coaches, who have lived the very problem at the root of this proposal, they wondered why this was the first time they were hearing about an idea they viewed as unhelpful—or even insulting.
The thing is, black coaches in the NFL have historically underperformed the average, which is the exact opposite of what should have been the case if they were being irrationally discriminated against.

All that affirmative action accomplishes is to confirm for everyone the very non-problem it is supposed to disprove, namely, the intrinsic inferiority of the group supposedly being helped. Seeing even more black coaches go 3-36-1, like Hue Jackson did at the helm of the Cleveland Browns, isn't going to convince NFL owners to saddle their teams with the disadvantage of an intellectually overmatched coaching staff, no matter how many draft picks are dangled in front of them as an incentive.

UPDATE: Common sense prevailed for the time being.

The NFL’s latest idea to incentivize hiring minority coaches and GMs does not appear to be going forward. Owners voted to table the resolution that would have incentivized hiring minorities, according to Jim Trotter of NFL Media.

I suppose this would end up working well for a team that hires a shrewd Bellicheck type GM that is willing to tank for a couple years as they get some extra picks for rebuilding. Fire the diversity hire for non performance, hire a Sean Payton sort that's up and coming and game the system that way. ESPN would howl over it.

Always fun to see the NFl and NBA pretend that the racial balance on the field is purely the result of stringent meritocracy, but the racial make-up off of it is solely the result of racism, sexism, or whatever -ism fills the role of current scourge of the oppressed.

What probably really cheesed off the black coaches was the NFL was planning to apply this half-arsed plan only to third round picks and lower.

"Affirmative Action"

Because Affirmative Racial Discrimination would expose its utter lawlessness. Better to give it a title so perfectly nondescript that it aptly applies to any and every dynamic under God's creation. Taking a dump is an affirmative action. It affirms a bunch of things; gravitaiton, digestive processes, etc. A supernova is an affirmative action. Kicking a puppy is an affirmative action.

How the hell did we, a supposedly free people, get here?

While not exactly a fan of his tactics in major matchups, Mike Tomlin has been a surprise while benefitting from the Rooney Rule. Man has a .637 career percentage (141-80-1), and has finished no worse than 8-8 in any of his 13 seasons at the helm in Pittsburgh.

A rare exception to the norm, as it were.

Unfortunately there are a growing number of female coaches now entering what was once a tremendous sports league. Will black coaches take exception to a female being hired, such as the one that is a co-offensive coordinator on the 49ers? And will affirmative action dictate that eventually females are considered as head coaches? You would think that black players would be opposed to female coaches, if suddenly they have a new presence in the way of their becoming a coach.

Yesterday I was bored and clicked on a story on my phone about the "30 Worst Coaches in NFL History."

Out of the 30, 5 were black.

And, given how few black head coaches there are/have been overall to begin with, that should be a huge tell right there that almost all black head coaches have not only failed, but failed miserably.

Hmmm...maybe Peter King or somebody else over at ESPN can tell us that it's all whitey's fault and even MORE affirmative action is needed!

He's also had decent ownership behind him, and being black provides a little extra squish zone with well-to-do whites.

Five black coaches on the worst ever list. Five out of how many total black coaches? Five?

Blogger rikjames.313 May 19, 2020 10:33 AM

Let's say the average black college grad in the US is 15 IQ points lower than the average white, and add in a bonus five points for the time preference issue. So that means it would have to be an increase of 20% not just for the draft, but 20% higher licensed merch sharing, some sort of salary help kicker of 20%, a boost on TV/cable sharing...

Well, it fairness to Hue Jackson, the Brown's organization brings new meaning to the word "dysfunctional," but, yeah, he is a pretty bad coach.

Mike Tomlin has consistently been in the playoffs and gone to two Super Bowls, but he can thank mostly Ben Roethlisberger for that. However, it is clear that the recent developments in then NFL game are beyond his intellectual capability. But they will never fire him.

There's Tony Dungy -- who looks like he has a lot of Caucasian admixture. He probably could have had a longer coaching career if he wanted, but didn't have that fire in his belly to keep at it.

Arguably the smartest black in a non playing position in the history of the NFL is Ozzie Newsome, former GM of the Ravens. On the other hand, he had great white coaches running the team, super smart guys.

There will almost certainly never be a black Bill Walsh, John Madden, Pete Carroll, Sean Payton, Andy Reid, or Bill Belichick -- guys who won/win consistently, are very high IQ, highly adaptable, and intellectually shrewd.

But the NFL will keep trying.

Blogger SemiSpook37 May 19, 2020 12:18 PM

True, but the fan base has been skeptical of him over the past few seasons, regardless of the success. They’ve wanted Tomlin fired for not succeeding in the playoffs, much less being able to make them.

Last season was a gift, if for nothing else to prove he could navigate a hostile environment on the field and in public arena. 8-8 was a resounding success, in that regard.

There used to be a pretty good legal industry in Michigan/Ohio/Indiana for set aside Big 3 auto contracting. The main stuff they couldn't screw around with, so for parking lot vac, janitor supply, clothing, inventory, repack... were all the set asides. Business law firm would work with a trustworthy black guy real companies brought in, and we would do enough to squeak past the NMBDC cert process. Not just the ownership docs, but compliance.

As an example, if you had the janitor supply and office/restroom refuse contract come up, they would recruit a college prof and his wife as the black owners, we would set up an LLC, but also they would need a bay in an industrial park, one or two rented trucks, two or three employees to drive the trucks and answer the phone, then the rest they could sub out to the real company to do the work.

The bankruptcies and China buying so many parts plants cancelled a lot of that field about 15 years ago, but it was good work while it lasted.

Please. Tomlin inherited a Cowher team with loads of talent. He hasn't done shit since making the Super Bowl in 2011. If anything, he has underachieved, losing 1-3 games every year to inferior teams with inferior coaches. His teams are often unprepared for big games, his 'game plans' are nonexistent, he doesn't make halftime adjustments, and in big moments he becomes a deer staring into the headlights. I won't even get into how he coddled Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown.

Blogger maniacprovost May 19, 2020 12:33 PM

Simple solution. Require all NFL teams to hire Black coaches.

That would work, but in order to not be racist we have to allow some white coaches to continue. Their team should be handicapped somehow. Maybe, if you have a white coach, you must also field at least 6 white players at all times.

Blogger msieng May 19, 2020 12:37 PM

Well, Louis Riddick had a good take. If the owners are not racist, why do they need this rule? If they are racist, they have larger problems.

And, there will always be questions about his ability, namely it was just skin color why you were hired.

And a glance at the staffs of the Steelers and Patriots show:

Steelers, 9 black, 10 white
Patriots, 13 white, 4 black.

Get the coaches to hire more blacks, if qualified, to fill the pipeline.

Remember, Eric Bieniemy was the offensive coordinator durng Kansas City's superbowl Run.

Blogger Damelon Brinn May 19, 2020 1:13 PM

Yeah, as soon as I saw this, I wondered how big a bribe it will take. It'd be hilarious if they offered something like a third-round pick and no team bit on it, so they had to up the ante. Would you hire Hue Jackson if he came with an extra first-round pick? What if you got a first-rounder each year you kept him? It would set the market value on the difference between white and black coaches.

Blogger SemiSpook37 May 19, 2020 1:42 PM

As I said, exception, not norm.

Much of what Tomlin has done has been on the shoulders of others, and yes, a rather overly irritating habit of playing down to the competition.

It also helps when when you have the Clowns and the Bungles in your division.

As for Bell and Brown, sure, they were coddled, but keep in mind Bell refused to sign his last franchise tender, and Colbert ended up trading Brown for scraps from the Raiders (which ended up blowing up hilariously for other reasons).

Again, who still has their job?

Was? Probably. Though Doug Williams probably deserves an honorable mention. Some people liked Warren Moon, but I never saw it myself. Is? Either Wilson or Mahomes with Newton as an honorable mention. Jackson may get there, but he hasn't proven it yet.

If you ask certain groups they would probably argue for Vick, but I'd argue they have no idea what they're talking about.

Black coaches need the league to give them a real chance by mandating the top winningest teams over a period, perhaps 10-20 years, release their staff and hire the best poc they can find. Bellichek shouldn't continue to benefit from his unwarranted position of privilege while a poor poc is relegated to Cleveland. Level the playing field so everyone can see how powerful true diversity can be.
