Facebook bans The Unz Review

Ron Unz observes, with mild bemusement, the fact that Facebook has belatedly banned The Unz Review:
My morning newspapers had recently mentioned Facebook’s plans to crack down on misinformation related to our ongoing Covid-19 epidemic, and probably like most other readers I just nodded my head. After all, many Americans might die if cranks or pranksters began promoting highly dubious cures to the deadly disease, perhaps even suggesting that people should inject themselves with Lysol to ward off an infection.

However, those bland public statements took on an entirely different meaning yesterday afternoon when I discovered that all material from The Unz Review had suddenly been banned for alleged violations of “community standards” and our own Facebook page eliminated.

I don’t use Social Media much myself, but others obviously due, and blocking all our website content from access to the 1.7 billion Facebook users seems a pretty drastic step. So it’s quite reasonable to wonder why, and especially why now?

From the very first, the motto of our publication has been A Collection of Interesting, Important, and Controversial Perspectives Largely Excluded from the American Mainstream Media, and I think we have fulfilled that pledge, publishing many thousands of articles and posts on an enormous range of extraordinarily controversial and even forbidden topics, notably including my own American Pravda series.

Under such circumstances, being banned by Facebook might hardly seem surprising. However, many of our most extremely controversial pieces were published years ago, drawing angry denunciations from various quarters, but received with apparent equanimity from the Lords of the Social Network. Nearly all of the “touchy” pieces we published in the last couple of weeks seem no more “touchy” than the ones from a year or two years or even three years ago. So what suddenly sparked this unprecedented action?

Although I can’t be sure, I strongly suspect that the triggering event was my own most recent American Pravda article, dealing as it did with the Coronavirus epidemic, the supposed focus of Facebook’s current crackdown. And this piece not only accumulated more early readership than any of my previous articles here, but also two or three times as many Facebook Likes, which might have raised serious concerns in certain quarters.
Fortunately, since Unz has long practiced the dark art of building his own platforms, this won't harm the Review in the slightest. But it does serve as a reminder that even in times of extreme difficulty, SJWs won't hesitate to cut off their own nose if they imagine doing so will harm you.

I left Facebook long ago, of my own volition, and I'm confident that my life is the better for it. Don't live in their walled gardens.

OK with censorship until it is him. Those dumb people need to be shut-up, but not ME!

The gardens is an understanding. Why whales, with a current media monopoly, would clamp down, and why now, to shut down the harpoons, provides a path to wisdom. They’re not whales, they’re people. Little David did not have a big sword or shield of metal, he had stones, and the armor of God.

They relished having an excuse to do it, which nCV19 gave them.

It's amusing to me because The Unz has been pretty mainstream when it comes to the virus. That is most of the writers fell into the doomer clan.

Blogger Stilicho May 01, 2020 9:16 AM

I particularly enjoy the concerted and coordinated effort of the glo balist media, democrats, and Chicoms to deny the corona virus originated in China, and especially the idea that it originated in the Wuhan virus lab. That's really all the confirmation we need that this virus did indeed originate in the Wuhan lab.

As always "Made in China" delenda est. That applies to their paid shills as well.

p.s. I wonder how much zuckerberg's chubby chinese waifu has to do with this latest attempt to hide the truth.

On the biowarfare side of things, nCV19 matches what you'd expect of a primer/timer component pretty nicely. It could be that it was intentionally released in China several weeks before something else was released, in order to ease the spread of the second component and simultaneously delineate a desired propagation area for it, outside of which its propagation would be poor.

This would be even nastier if the second component was also a coronavirus, but different enough that immunity for the first didn't affect the second. This would serve as a screen for the second component, making detection of it more difficult.

This quote from his earlier article is interesting:

Earlier this month, an ABC News story cited four separate government sources to reveal that as far back as late November, a special medical intelligence unit within our Defense Intelligence Agency had produced a report warning that an out-of-control disease epidemic was occurring in the Wuhan area of China, and widely distributed that document throughout the top ranks of our government, warning that steps should be taken to protect US forces based in Asia. After the story aired, a Pentagon spokesman officially denied the existence of that November report, while various other top level government and intelligence officials refused to comment. But a few days later, Israeli television mentioned that in November American intelligence had indeed shared such a report on the Wuhan disease outbreak with its NATO and Israeli allies, thus seeming to independently confirm the complete accuracy of the original ABC News story and its several government sources.

Never, ever, believe anything until it has been officially denied!

t therefore appears that elements of the Defense Intelligence Agency were aware of the deadly viral outbreak in Wuhan more than a month before any officials in the Chinese government itself. Unless our intelligence agencies have pioneered the technology of precognition, I think this may have happened for the same reason that arsonists have the earliest knowledge of future fires.

Wait. Help me out here. Why do arsonists know about future fires before anyone else?

Blogger Crew May 01, 2020 10:20 AM

In the same way that the NSA appears to be well ahead of the encryption industry one can expect certain government agencies to be well ahead in bio-warefare knowledge.

Unz's holocaust articles are so important. For Americans conditioned by so much relentless propaganda, being able to say "a Jew wrote this" is extremely powerful. I've recommended his articles to people this way more times than I can count. Of course it is extremely depressing that we are more skeptical of our own people than an invasive foreign tribe, but it is what it is.

Paychologically, life has been better without Facebook but it has come at a real opportuntity cost.

Me: "I'm looking for housing."
Friend: "Go on Facebook and check the church boards!"

Woman: "How can I invite you to parties and hangouts if you aren't on Facebook?"
Me: "Call, text, or carrier pigeon"

It's a tool that the normie uses for a variety of different reasons. But once you're off, attempts to get back on it feels wrong.

As AA. Also, if there were a dangerous component that had been muted. Which would not be done by the kindness of their own heart. Fanciful, for the rest, if you like. Leo Zegami has a useful take (“The Apocalypse Unveiled […], 49:20”), a bit more than tangential, as to MIT, the 1970s, cyber Satan, and the release of COVID-19 (in its’ current capacity). “Maven,” as a bit less esoteric, as the program would have been misconstrued to being more of an end time construction than would be warranted, and serving a purpose other than that hoped for by the evil. With a virus, the final composition of which would be based on www collected data (target bad, bad virus, target not bad, not bad virus and pain for would be exterminators). From a program such could never hope to understand, with security they could never hope to crack, from the sort that would never be expected, in a world few could comprehend. The computer was not the programmer, it contained the source (code), and the extrapolator of www variable selected subroutines. Like a Choose Your Own Adventure fantasy book, but more fantastical of the day to day, and a bit of The Chinese Room.

Do you think we could go back? Honest question. If we could close Facebook and go back to the smattering of MySpace type social media lite of the early aughts, do you think it would stick? I know a lot of folks who are quite happy not knowing EVERYTHING that is going on with their acquaintances, friends and family, but they seem to be GenX and above. I'm wondering if we've broken the younger generations with FOMO from birth.

This pandemic has been even more effective than Trump himself at getting these cohorts and the institutions they control to drop their masks.

It's no wonder Trump's approval rating has been skyrocketing, even in notoriously laggard legacy polling.

What strikes me given the ease with which the ccp has infiltrated US institutions top to bottom is the ham-fistedness of this latest chinese propaganda effort: It's almost as if it's intentionally growing and polarizing Trump's populists.

Blogger Akulkis May 01, 2020 12:33 PM

David Icke was the first one to really push the idea of a global-wide Deep State. He referred to them as reptilian (and really, it DOES match their personality and outlook).

He really stuck his neck out when he could have just kept it all to himself.

His Facebook page being banned is utterly irrelevant. However, blocking all links from unz.com across all of Facebook will definitely have an impact on the proliferation of content.

[Facebook is] a tool that the normie uses for a variety of different reasons.

Yeah, I keep hearing that it's just for Boomers and everyone else is moving to hipper services, but everyone around here still uses it, even people in their 20s. Lots of small businesses use it as their only web presence. That's not enough to get me back on it, but I can see why it's hard for people to give up.

That's really all the confirmation we need that this virus did indeed originate in the Wuhan lab.

I think some people are overthinking it, as if there's a tricky reverse-psychology going on: "They're only silencing people who say it came from the Wuhan lab to get people talking about the lab because there's a conspiracy to make people blame the lab even though it didn't come from there." Too complicated, and ignores the fact that even today most people still only know what the media lets them know.

the ham-fistedness of this latest chinese propaganda effort

I think part of the problem is that it's not just them. The media and SJWs of all sorts are parroting the same propaganda in hopes of pointing the blame at Trump somehow. The combination is overdoing it. The day of the whole "drink bleach" story, there must have been 50 simultaneous shill posts on /pol/ about it. That's way more than you'd get from a standard Shareblue campaign or something like that, but when you have the Shareblues *and* CCP workers *and* Antifa *and* so on all jumping in and copying each other, it's comically obvious.

In terms of how he views the virus itself and its characteristics (transmissibility and lethality) Mr. Unz beez a good boy by (((Mockingbird Media))) rules. When the discussion shifts to the origins of the virus - a natural jump from Wuhan Wet Market Bat/Pangolin delicacies versus a bio-weapon possibly engineered by Deep State to jump-start a Neo-Clown wet-dream of war with China - he beez a very bad boy indeed. It was the kind of article that might cause some normie to question what their being spoon-fed on a daily basis by the likes of Zuckerberg and his DS bosses.

Just a reminder. Facebook and Youtube are for entertainment only. You look at Facebook to see what your "friends" are doing, like the trip to Tahiti, and what not. You luse Youtube to look at big cat videos and the like. You go elsewhere if you want real discussion or real news. That's the way it works.

I got off Facecrook more than a year ago. It was strange. I actually felt something like withdrawal symptoms for several weeks. It was almost like someone had designed the thing to be addictive, hooking people, keeping them coming back again and again. Once I understood what was happening, I was appalled and creeped out. That realization more than anything kept me from going back.

Vox is right. Stop supporting the people who hate you. The Big Bear is right. Stop letting the wizards control you.

Blogger tublecane May 01, 2020 3:00 PM

I am allergic to Facebok. Wasn't ever a choice whether to use it or not. That site just immediately turns me off.

Which used to be how I felt about Twitter, as well, though eventually I spent some time there. Before being suspended multiple times.

Unz, on the other hand, is a primo spot. I go for Steve Sailer and stay for the Derb, Buchanan, E. Michael Jones, and others. One will find more ideological and other kinds of intellectual diversity here than in any mainstream outlet, obviously. But it contains that fearful "conspiracy" stuff, so it's scary.

One of the amazing things about social media sites like Facebook and Twitter is the amount of idiots that are on display.

For example, Trudeau announced an "assault-weapons" ban in Canada, though, from what I can recollect, automatic weapons were already banned; semi-autos are still legal. But the sheep are all whipped up, wanting to move to Canada now for some reason. Serfs gotta serf, I guess.

Blogger crescent wrench May 01, 2020 5:31 PM

@22 I'm not referring to the number of people parroting the CCP's line, I'm referring to the plausibility of it.

For example, let's go with their puppeteering of the WHO: The medically-dubious guidelines,self-contradictions, and utter "Baghdad Bob"-ing of this event make it obvious even to the most slothful boomer what is happening.

If I were out to destroy the WHO's credibility and stoke nationalist sentiment, this is how I'd do it.

Mind you, while China is getting its butt kicked economically with Trump in office it stands to gain in terms of regional and cultural footing from the public's renewed push for greater isolationism.

If there is ONE thing FB is not good at doing, it is as a replacement for a proper website. It is completely useless for that and yet so many small businesses do it.

Blogger Damelon Brinn May 02, 2020 2:46 PM

@44, It works fine for the kind of small business that just needs to put up a bit of information and communicate with customers. The local gas station that sells pizza and sandwiches has its menu on there, and posts specials now and then. That's all they need. A 1-2 page web site would do the job too, but they'd have to create it or have someone design it, and have it hosted somewhere. On FB, a manager or someone who already uses FB can just....do it.

I put the comment about the Powers that Be banning Unz on the wrong thread, the Unz v Fox thread instead of this one. The banning may be a purposefully delayed reaction to the stand Unz has taken, and promoted on his blog, on the need to investigate Pizzagate, rather than just swallowing the media's chorus of "it's been debunked, this restaurant where the MAGA guy showed up with a gun doesn't even HAVE a basement!"
