I humbly accept

While I do not seek this grave responsibility, given the historical context of the current situation, if SFWA requires a POC President-for-Life in light of the horrific structural racism of the organization, I will humbly accept the position once the white racist Mary Robinette Kowal resigns her office:
Yesterday, SFWA announced a racist — and illegal via several Civil Rights statutes — action in which if you are a member of a certain race, you do not have to pay SFWA dues nor do you have to pay to attend their convention. Moreover, the California Incorporated SFWA announced they would be giving money from their coffers to causes which have nothing to do with club members nor science fiction.

As a corporation, SFWA has to abide by rules which do not discriminate via race, gender, religion, etc. And yet with their denying my entry when I duly qualify, and now these initiatives, they are showing that they do not respect minority authors at all, but view us as slaves who are too poor to be able to handle business as their “proper” white authors like Mary do, and also they believe we are too stupid to be able to handle our own charitable causes or have our own opinions on public matters which are different than what Mary or Cat (both white women) advocate for.

I recommend she step down from SFWA leadership and appoint a PoC in her stead who will guide SFWA in matters only someone who doesn’t try to culturally appropriate a cause would do. What Mary Robinette Kowal has done these last 24 hours and during her tenure of leadership of SFWA is deplorable and irredeemable and must be disavowed by any non-racists.
My program is straightforward.
  • Appoint an African editor of all SFWA publications. Preferably one who speaks an African language and does not speak the language of the oppressors.
  • Award the 2020 Nebula Best Novel Award to Octavia Butler (posthumous)
  • The 2021-2025 Nebula Best Novel Awards will be given to NK Jemisin, the greatest SF writer in the history of SF writing.
  • Award the 2020 SFWA Grand Master to NK Jemisin.
  • $5,000 annual reparations will be paid to all POC authors from a pool collected from the white membership of SFWA.
Anything less would be racist. #BlackLivesMatterMost

I didn't know that Rice Boy had it in him to black knight.

You *are* black-knighting, right Jon?

SFWA is run by an AWFL woman?

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.

That's "Rice Man" to you, knave!

Interesting. Are they waiving fees for blacks or are they using organization funds to pay the fees as an outreach measure?

I looked into this type of question, in a different state but somewhat related issue, years ago and in that instance the two different ways of doing it made a difference.

But (however?) as to Vox's real point. Yes. Unless the organization was a a huge leg up in getting published, I would bail out as soon as they started making me pay to give others a free ride based on their skin color

"I recommend she step down from SFWA leadership and appoint a PoC...."

I think the author made a typo there. It is technically, POS!

Blogger Azimus June 05, 2020 2:20 PM

Shouldn't your platform also institute the "sci-fi writers pledge" where all white sci fi writers pledge on their knees to make ammends for a century of bigoted visions of the future that were insufficiently POC'd. It could be a fun group pledge where POC's say something like "and do you pledge to be an ally and advocate for a human future that is vibrant, inclusive, and brown?" and then the white writers on their knees could respond somberly "I so pledge" and do that for 9-10 rounds. That might capture the zeitgeist.

I didn't realize before yesterday that NK Jemisin was a black chick. No wonder she's the Greatest SF Author That Ever Lived. They finally found a black SF writer--and a woman even!--that could string together coherent sentences (mostly), so it was a slam dunk. Though I admit I've never read any of her books.

Blogger Ron Winkleheimer June 05, 2020 2:33 PM

So, Kowal has the "white savior complex?"

Blogger Megamerc June 05, 2020 2:36 PM

Robinette Kowal has just opened up SFWA for a major lawsuit.

This is the equivalent to setting up an organization where white Americans could join free, but all other races would have to pay. All other races are discriminated against, as there would be a penalty for not being white. In this case, unless you are black, you are discriminated against and a penalty in the form of membership fees is levied.

Blogger Jim June 05, 2020 2:37 PM

"$5,000 annual reparations will be paid to all POC authors from a pool collected from the white membership of SFWA."

Does this include all POC who identify as authors, or are we being problematic?

Blogger J Van Stry June 05, 2020 2:42 PM

I had no idea she was such a racist.
It's only fair that she resign and appoint someone else in her stead.
Fairness matters.

"I humbly accept" that's gold. pure gold! The rest is funny too, but that's the best line.

You would think that, but law is no longer law. Anti-discrimination laws not only allow, they compel you to discriminate against Whites.

Blogger Lightning in My Hands June 05, 2020 3:19 PM

Vox, I just can't top your virtuous attempts to literally solve racist problems. You're more current year than I am.

There's nothing racist about saying that a certain ethnic group doesn't join your professional organization because they're utter failures who can't afford the membership fee, is there? It's just being a good ally!

I am a member of the SFWA, and so I can read and post in their super secret private discussion boards.

Divulging anything from them is grounds for instant dismissal, but I'll say this: It's WORSE than it looks and sounds.

These people are seriously mentally ill.

I'm sure I could be persuaded to purchase a leather bound copy of the Hugo award nominated 'Collected Works of Chuck Tingle'

Blogger CostelloM June 06, 2020 12:40 AM

I would like to believe that the great author Chuck Tingle would also be included in your reformation platform. Space Raptor Butt Invasion merely being a nominee is a crime and is homophobic cisgender discrimination and speciest as well. In 2019 Chuck published "Oh the places you'll blow" which is obviously better than anything the toad ever wrote, just by the title alone, and is certainly deserving of an award.

It has been a rapid evolution in thinking, everyone should agree. WE have been dragged by the heels on our belly, clawing at the carpet for more traction over the idea that BlackLivesMatter.

It was a non-issue from the beginning, because there was never anyone who argued that they did not matter. It ended up being as uneventful as a poetry contest in New England. The meat simply was not strong enough to provoke the desired push-back. OK....so what? Not only do BlackLivesMatter, but so do everyone else's. AllLivesMatter was the perfect response and let all the air out of their complaint. This made them angry. "YOU are not responding correctly." "THAT is a racist retort."

And so we got BlackLivesMatterMost, which is another victory for Stokely Carmichael over MLK. Equality was never the goal. Egalitarianism (the touchstone of Leftists and Liberals everywhere) was never the purpose. Black Power and Black Supremacy is the agenda and the goal. But still it did not provoke the desired response, so now we have BlackLivesMatterONLY. No other lives can be mentioned as mattering. ONLY black lives can matter...and you have to say that on your knees, with both hands raised to heaven. Hosanna. Hosanna. (An old term that can now be restored by the faithful. The white Leftist Liberals are going to have difficulty with the change. Egalitarianism is dead now.)
