The Etiquette of Evil

The fourth and final episode of Midnight's War, Arkhaven's entry in the Webtoons Short Story contest, is now available. It is called THE ETIQUETTE OF EVIL and I think you will find that it more than makes up for the lack of action in the previous episode.

As for any resemblances to any real-life figures that one may observe or imagine in this episode, rest assured that I gave absolutely no instructions to the illustrator in that regard. It would appear he has a rather puckish sense of humor.

The entire series comes in four parts:
  1. Not Even the Wicked Dead
  2. They Also Serve
  3. The Blood Must Flow
  4. The Etiquette of Evil

"The entire series comes in four parts:"

More, more, more... I'll pay :). Is that... Vox Buffy the Vampire?

Blogger Sam Spade June 29, 2020 8:28 AM

I like how the first vampire lord is reading Terms of use and arbitration regulations in leather bound books.

Bravissimo! Mr. Illustrator.

Vox is the new Mr. Magoo!

As they say on the internet, MOAR PLZ

Great artwork and writing.

The setting and lore has a lot of potential for very interesting story, characters and high level intrigues. Just the economy system idea is genius. There is also a sample of care about smart use of tactics and strategies in the conflicts.

The 4 episodes make for a great pilot for a promising TV show, or the beginning of a cool series of books.

Congratulations, VOX and all the team.

An excellent series. And a perfect set up for more to come if you decide to do so.

I await further details.

Oh no... Just enough to feel the taste, not enough fulfill.

This is just like 1 book... or "season"... or whatever it's called in comic books right? It's not the end of the entire series, is it?

I've never read comic books, but I downloaded Webtoons a week or so ago and have read every AltHero and Midnight's War and will be starting on Avalon soon. Midnight's War has been great, and I really hope it's not OVER over.

I did a google of "the 13 tribes", i assumed it would happen, but still got a nice surprise ladle of gravy.

Hi Vox,
For fun, I looked at the Webtoons Short Story Contest site and sampled some concurrent submissions. Not surprisingly, the stories tend to target young readers who blister through art driven narrative and limited text at the speed of finger swiping or scrolling.
My daughter taught herself to read at the speed of screaming Japanese in the subtitled versions of anime favorites. Later she finished new episodes of print manga even before the car trip back from Barnes and Noble. In the last years my wife and I are knocking on her door at night glowing under its sill from the phone screen and letting through her peals of giggles scamp down the hallway. (Just one more chapter, please!) Now I watch her just finishing middle school still swiping at the same speed and with the same glee –but now whole blocks of high interest text.
My point is that I am much more deeply understanding and appreciating the need and niche that you have identified for Arkhaven. And while I know that you are slaughtering goats to preserve the youth classics, it’s good to know that you are also slaughtering vampires into new classics.

That was a very interesting story. Well done!

Blond Big Bear and Overlord Alex Jones too?

Blogger Dan in Georgia June 29, 2020 1:43 PM

He looks like he's reading a book he borrowed from Sauron.

Blogger Dr. J June 29, 2020 1:45 PM

Read and liked all 4. Of course, any resemblance to real persons living or dead is purely coincidental, etc.

I was waiting for the flaming sword to appear, though.

Blogger Lightning in My Hands June 29, 2020 1:46 PM

We want more.

This vampire high-speech is particularly enthralling.

Blogger David The Good June 29, 2020 2:43 PM

This is very, very good.

Blogger CarpeOro June 29, 2020 2:52 PM

I started reading them. Well done.

Blogger Solon June 29, 2020 3:05 PM

The gentleman reading a paper seems a fine sort, dark and lordly, but with a keen understanding of the proper way to address fellow gentlemen. He is surely handsome, kind, and generous as well.

Would that there were such a man in real life, alas.

Blogger Gregory the Tall June 29, 2020 3:55 PM

I have been waiting for the final version of Sea of Skulls for such a long time now that if you asked me today what I would prefer, Sea of Skulls finished or a new episode of Midnight's War every week, I would choose the second.

Blogger Manuel June 29, 2020 4:00 PM

What is the confusion? this is clearly not the Dark Lord's lair, not enough dogs and not nearly enough bottles of wine. Also, note the lack of skulls.

Blogger Bobiojimbo June 29, 2020 5:39 PM

@25 The skulls are in the yard. This has been mentioned before.

Good story. Nice cliffhanger. I hope there is more. :D

Blogger GK Chesterton June 29, 2020 8:46 PM

I'd also pay for this. I thought you said in a previous article to kill off your Mary Sue though, and I swear episode 4 has you in it. Italian, Library, Blond "wife", Mohawk...

Blogger VD June 29, 2020 9:32 PM

I'm not the illustrator, GK. I didn't write that or expect that, especially in light of how he's a minor character.

Blogger Azure Amaranthine June 30, 2020 12:20 AM

He's a minor character that survived a redshirt moment through personality, so he might grow.

Blogger map June 30, 2020 2:54 AM

Yeah, this comic is great and the the high-born language is great to here.

Love Vox's cameo as a vampire.

Blogger James Dixon June 30, 2020 5:25 AM

> I'm not the illustrator, GK. I didn't write that or expect that, especially in light of how he's a minor character.

Considering that, "We're just as fast as you." seems unlikely.

Blogger Avalanche June 30, 2020 8:52 AM

@18 He looks like he's reading a book he borrowed from Sauron.

Yeah, my eyebrows went up when I realized the book the ... uh ... Dark Lord vampire is reading is not (merely?) a Terms of Service document, but written in Elvish... Man-oh-man that illustrator is brilliant! Delightful, sharp sense of humor and a fantastic artist!

Please PLEASE many more issues, followed by an omnibus, and then a movie!! Some novels wouldn't go amiss either?

Blogger ScottC June 30, 2020 10:08 PM

Nice atmosphere and art style, but the characters speak with similar syntax and diction. A skillful writer is like an actor playing different roles.

Blogger Temet Nosce July 05, 2020 7:09 AM

For what it is worth, though I am a backer of the original Alt-Hero comic series, it was not my personal style. This new series, however, is. I hope there will be many further issues released, and am willing to help fund a physical release especially. Please consider a print release.

I also would prefer the other 11 members of the catacombs of Rome be slow rolled out, with some never revealed to the reader in full.
