Ding dong, New York is dead

I'd like to believe that New York City is dead forever, but I don't know if I dare to hope:
BUT NYC ALWAYS COMES BACK

Yes it does. I lived three blocks from Ground Zero on 9/11. Downtown, where I lived, was destroyed, but it came roaring back within two years. Such sadness and hardship and then quickly that area became the most attractive area in New York.

And in 2008/2009, there was much suffering during the Great Recession, again much hardship, but things came roaring back.

But… this time is different. You’re never supposed to say that but this time it’s true. If you believe this time is no different, that NYC is resilient, I hope you’re right.

I don’t benefit from saying any of this. I love NYC. I was born there. I’ve lived there forever. I STILL live there. I love everything about NYC. I want 2019 back.

But this time is different.

One reason: Bandwidth.

In 2008, average bandwidth speeds were 3 megabits per second. That’s not enough for a Zoom meeting with reliable video quality. Now, it’s over 20 megabits per second. That’s more than enough for high-quality video.

There’s a before and after. BEFORE: No remote work. AFTER: Everyone can work remotely.

The difference: bandwidth got faster. And that’s basically it. People have left New York City and have moved completely into virtual worlds. The Time-Life Building doesn’t need to fill up again. Wall Street can now stretch across every street instead of just being one building in Manhattan.

We are officially AB: After Bandwidth. And for the entire history of NYC (the world) until now, we were BB: Before Bandwidth.

Remote learning, remote meetings, remote offices, remote performance, remote everything.

That’s what is different.
Best pandemic ever. It's killing the centers of moral and physical filth. Look at all the lamentations for Gotham and the Hellmouth! When I go out, I don't wear a mask out of fear or submission. I wear one out of pure unadulterated glee.

Any job that can be outsourced to the remote office can be targeted for outsourcing to foreign countries. And that's what we as a society have to accept...because the managers say efficiency is the most important thing.

In other news, I don't think those golden parachutes are very efficient. Why don't we see about creating laws that allow the government to raid those...

It's not just New York. It's every drastically overpriced city in the U.S. Boston, San Francisco etc etc.

Around 30 years ago a guy named Garreau(sp?) wrote a book called "Edge Cities". In it he said that research showed that at 45 minutes travel time to work whether it was walking through a walled city, jumping on a horse or riding in an SUV, people balk that it's too much.

Some people handle more, some less. But there's a premium on living in a city or in its inner suburbs because you can have a travel time less than that 45 minutes unlike the poor shlubs coming in from outer suburbs.

But 2020 gave us three considerations that have seriously diminished the premium of those shorter commuting distances.

One is that people now realize that same high density of population that gets urban planner types moist is also more dangerous in the scenario of a contagious disease. This was a lesser problem for the urban uber alles crowd.

The second was that, while those extra bandwidths already existed, the insane response to the covid-19 virus, treating it as if it were ebola and forcing people to stay home forced those same people to try to work from home. And many of them found that they could. But if you can work from home, and don't even have a commute, you don't need to pay top dollar to live in the city or innermost suburbs to avoid a long commute.

The third is that the insane response of several big city mayors to rioters attaching the fig leaf of BLM to their desire to watch the world burn was to offer some of their neighborhoods up on a silver platter to be burnt and looted. It hasn't escaped the notice of anyone that this doesn't seem to be happening in the suburbs anywhere, especially the outer suburbs.

I live about 45 miles outside a big east coast city. My co-workers and I have some tangential contact with real estate agents as part of our jobs. What they're telling us is that, in residential real estate, all of the push, all of it, is to move from in close to that city to further away.

I don't see that changing soon.

And all of this came just as the prices of real estate in many U.S. cities, New York, San Francisco, Boston, LA etc had started to crumble from astonishingly overpriced heights. The events of the last 6 months couldn't have come along at a worse time for those who bought into that overpriced market.

With great effort I'm able to control my tears for them.

The real problem is that in almost every article I read about rich/white/progressives moving away from Los Angeles, New York, etc. is that they move to my town in bulk. Nashville is listed in almost all of them so middle tn has been getting gayer, dumber, more karen-ish while housing prices are insane. For anyone who has been here for a while can tell you south of nashville for 40 miles or so has been almost a paradise for decades, but increasingly there are signs of rot.

Blogger Silent Draco August 16, 2020 9:07 PM

Another reason: cost. Wall Street and others moved their back offices to New Jersey, 30 years ago. It cost too much to rent or buy square footage in Manhattan or the boroughs. You'd have telephone or teleconferences, or someone would need to commute into the city for meetings.

Things changed; the main office can now follow the back offices elsewhere. If they're all not in NYC, there's no abominable city income tax added on top.

@9 - Williamson County has long been very gay and quite dumber, and that points out the biggest problem here: you can kill off New York or LA, but there's no way to ever kill off the residents' grossly inflated sense of self-importance. As a free floating level 5 turbo omega I don't mind wearing a face covering and I have zero issues with seeing the end of this boomeristic "everything has to be Woodstock" mentality. For years I agonized over all this need for business trips, observed and even myself at times, to do things that could have been done remotely.
Doing things remotely frees up the pathways of meatspace - roads and terminals and such - for those whose vocations actually require hands on presence.
When the pandemic first hit, I had a note giving me a pass to be on the roads. Essential job for the most part. And the roads felt like they did back in the late 1980s. And that left me wondering who are all these damned people tarding up the roads all the damned time and turning even a short errand into an exercise of frothing rage?
It's mostly people shopping for crap they don't need, and boomers going to eateries to stuff their fat faces. When it was just the "essentials" on the roads and people going out for essentials the roads went back to the days of pre-"everybody and their damned 20 siblings go running to America!". And there is much kvetching going on regarding the situation with the pointless jobs and the pointless immigrants who worked them. Oh how are they going to stay here and vote for more socialisms if they can't work?
Speaking of pointless, it was pointless indeed to live in NYC. I grew up a mere 40 minute train ride from Penn Station. The only reason to live in NYC was to work the financial and fashion districts. Everything else was a monument to pointless f**kery.
What enabled me to work a job in Seattle for nearly a decade was the fact that I could remote in and only had to be there twice a week. My home office was on a farm not far from Owen's neck of the woods. Living on Seattle? Never earned enough. Drive every day down I5 in that mess? I would sooner be homeless.
Yes it's good that something finally broke "the hold" of the most retarded mindset in all western history.

Corona Chan hasn't killed these centers, nor will it, but it has seriously wounded them.

Expect to see more hybridization -- two to three days a week in a central location for top people. Ive done a lot of Zooming and Teaming over the past few months, and while they're fine for what they are, personal interaction is required for a lot of businesses.

People had, up to this point, gravitated to cities because of the convenience to perks -- great restaurants, theater, museums...they came and stayed for the dynamism. But a city only works if the boundaries are clear to everybody -- these are the good neighborhoods, these are the questionable ones, these are the bad.

To maintain those boundaries requires political will and an electorate that will put people in power with that will. That isn't going to happen anytime soon in LA, San Francisco, Chicago, or New York. These are cities that will still exist, but will be hollowed out.

Corona Chan has also wounded higher education. The elite schools will remain, but the marginal schools are toast.

Because it is the sole accepted way they can critique anything other, while telling their own confused minds that everything is great because after you drive through the ghetto and dodge gangbangers in the barrio, you too can enjoy authentic Thai food made by Indonesians from decaying meats of the slimy Chinese grocer in whatever version of Chinatown you are unlucky enough to have.

Oh and that grocer is more than happy to take that EBT!! Winning! See everything IS great after all because the endless poor are eating and their kids have free breakfast AND lunch and when they grow up even more diverse restaurants, free lunches, and empowering changes will be there for the cycle to continue.

The advent of high quality video conferencing has made office spaces in cities and business parks obsolete to much of the services industry. If there is no need for a company to have physical interaction with the customer, there is no reason it needs to be located in a city or have much of an office footprint aside from what it needs for its servers and data retention.

My employer is moving in this direction, although for the time being certain tasks still require an office presence. The good thing is that this trend should increase mobility as more people can now move without having to worry about leaving their job and finding a new one elsewhere. Companies with a minimal footprint can also more easily leave high tax or otherwise insane jurisdictions.

It sure looks to me like the left is letting its own strongholds be looted and burned in the hope that this will somehow win them the election. How they see cause and effect there I don't know. Maybe they aren't thinking that deeply about it anymore. After the riots failed to get Trump to give them a Kent State, it's as if they just threw up their hands and turned their pets loose. I know they always double-down, but damn.

And they are coming to turn the red states blue.

Most of them will relocate to other blue cities. If you see them discussing it online, it's always in the context of another city where they'd feel comfortable. Hmmm, maybe we should recreate the old "Welcome Wagon" system: a couple of locals show up on move-in day with cookies; a list of good places to shop and play; and specifically for these newly arrived parasite, a VERY serious discussion of:

Now, this is most important: you've escaped the hellhole that YOUR voting patterns and the choices you made of what to support created: a dangerous expensive hellhole. You've moved out here to the place where OUR voting patterns created and support: voting patterns that are pretty much the opposite of the yours, that created that hellhole you had to escape.

Our voting patterns and lifestyle preferences lead to everything about "out here" that you moved here to gain. We chose to NOT live in your hellhole-style cities, and we have worked -- and chosen -- HARD to create and maintain the 'nice safe places' y'all moved here for. So, just to be clear: We intend to KEEP these places nice and safe places.

So, you need to either NOT vote for ten years, while you recover from your old destructive voting habits, or think long and hard about what voting patterns create which kinds places to live. We'll be happy to help you work out the differences. We'll also make it uncomfortable for you if you begin trying to recreate your old hellholes in OUR nice safe towns.

Clear? Welcome to the neighborhood!

People have been leaving in droves for a long time because of high taxes and crappy traffic, commutes, etc. All being replaced by first time buyers from NYC. It's a flow of people from the turd world into NYC, pushing out the middle class into the burbs, who in turn replace those fleeing burb taxation. Corona-chan has accelerated that greatly, but the in flow of the turd world hasn't increased. This is a net loss of population, but the burb demand is going to make the taxing authorities even more overconfident of how much they can bleed us before anyone marches on their offices with pitchforks. I don't see anyone even dreaming about lowering taxes here, which will just perpetuate the exodus.

And rents are crashing in the city - both residential and commercial - while my house continues to climb in value. Winning! Sort of...

There is a theory that it's making AI facial recognition better by linking up to phone location and concentrating on eyes head shape ears gait etc

No, there's a pressing need for laws that grant the right to vote only to long-term residents.

Honestly, I've been worried about the urban exodus and the grasshopper people migrating to small towns like mine. My local community won't survive it's first Pride Parade.

However, there MAY be a plus to the exodus.

One of the biggest reasons that SJWism has thrived is the Friends syndrome. People who moved from the small town to the big city and then formed their "family of choice."

The "family of choice" being nothing more than a pod of friends who are bound by nothing more deep than mild affection.

Since these ties are so tenuous the members of these Friends pods go to greater lengths to maintain the relationship than they would for blood kin.

Most notably by adopting urban politics which are, naturally, Left wing.

The majority of the members of these Friends-pods are just bobble-heads bob-bob-bobbing along with the group. Separate them from their "family of choice." And their SJWism may fade quickly if their new neighbors disapprove strongly enough.

I'm pro-mask for the exact same reason, plus until mask-recognition software is better developed, the nanny state can no longer beastmark me in public.

Do cities make liberals or do liberals make cities.

Cities are where parasites move to be near a large supply of hosts, and to avoid accountability by being just another anonymous face in the ever-changing crowd.

How to prevent them from causing problems in our home towns? The best solution would be to act on crescent wrenches observation about universal suffrage being a bad idea and not let these people vote, but that's not an achievable change just quite yet. Second best is something like Avalanche suggested - let them know they are not going to be anonymous. You know who they are, you're watching them, and won't be able to avoid accountability for their actions. It won't change what they are, but it might scare them into keeping their heads down.

There shouldn't be a vote at all. Or if there is a vote it should be only for land owning net tax paying citizens.

This just in - Empty Apartments in Manhattan reach 13,000.
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/13/empty-apartments-in-manhattan-reach-record-high-topping-13000.html

My son's office was told they wouldn't be back until an effective vaccine was available. They expect early-to-mid 2022. Half of the office ditched a 90 minute commute from Connecticut's Gold Coast. The other half ditched $4k+ monthly rents. He moved to the Midwest, and is waiting for their legal department to rule on when they can stop deducting NYC and NY state taxes.

Forgot to add - 15' UHaul truck, from NYC to Ohio, $1344. From Ohio to NYC, $624.

No, we need to run them off when they move out to the country, and make damn sure that the realty people know not to get involved in selling to city people.

Agreed. It's not that people are wrong when they point out that exports from blue cities are a bad thing that we should prepare for. That's completely true. It's the mindset it shows when that's the first thing people think and tell each other instead of looking at all the positive aspects of their self-immolation. We on the right need to learn to enjoy the victories.

Now would be a good time to institute draconian anti-growth measures. No new housing developments. No expansion of the sewer system. No new water hookups.

I wouldn't let any of these Brave Black Coders within ten feet of a void pointer.

Point well taken. There are positives and it is good to think on them, while planning on how to limit their influence in their new locale. They are susceptible to social shaming as was mentioned above. It must be wielded without mercy on newcomers.

Yes.

To both. Blue voters don't care about fraud, as long as they get their blue bennies.

My solution to the Blue City Diaspora is to raise the residence requirement for voting to ten years. The invaders may not have been turned Red in ten years but I'll either be dead or fully Bidenized.
