Put not your trust in men

Jon Del Arroz contemplates the Culture War Grift

After you’ve been around the block awhile, you see posts of folk complaining about online movements which devolve into meaninglessness.

It’s pretty easy to spot the symptoms at this point to not involve yourself:

  1. Conservatives/Right Wingers are blacklisted/wronged/banned from some industry.
  2. The people react, supporting said right wingers.
  3. People want more — they want an alternative, they look for a leader.
  4. A few semi-celebrity grifters come in, act as leaders to either get themselves awards and/or money.
  5. The grifters bleat endlessly about how the art must be “apolitical”.
  6. The grifters fight the right wingers and wrestle control of the movement, often warning about “extremism on both sides”.
  7. The right wingers get ostracized/blacklisted, thus negating the purpose of the movement to beginwith.
  8. The grifters ride the movement until it dies.
I'm sure you can't imagine whom he has in mind.... The key for any lasting organization or institution is to keep out the SJWs, which is something neither the grifters nor the wannabees will ever do. Sad Puppies and the Dragon Awards were doomed because they wanted to fix the enemy. The reason our projects continue moving forward - however irritatingly slowly they move - is because we refuse to embrace the apolitical or the irreligious.

Life is a fundamentally spiritual exercise. And those who are playing only for themselves, or worse, for the other side, cannot be allowed on the team.

I sense an impending announcement for further delay of ASoS.

The most frustrating thing is people who are aware of this scyle and others like it yet continue to be fence sitters in thought. Not acting is understandable, but the lack of development in thought is baffling.

Hearing people like Reikieta attempt to put a wet blanket over Kyle Rittenhouse and his morale boost is weird and seems like an incredible lapse of judgement. It only makes sense if he thinks theres a way to vote our way out of this and seeing as he lives in Minnesota he should know better.

Blogger Gregory the Tall September 08, 2020 12:49 PM

@1 Shimshon
As the years went by I decided one day to let go of the "What about AsoS" attitude, in part because it is faintly reminiscent of the "What about me" attitude. Let us look at the greater picture.

The "Team" must gain moral supremacy and must do so in the simplest of ways, the "Team" must demand and argue for the protection of the weak and the innocent. No harm should come to those who chose to opt out, not involve themselves and which to live in peace without taking a side in a stupid meaningless conflict.

Blogger Doktor Jeep September 08, 2020 1:09 PM

Movements have to draw upon the same pool of stupid, solipsistic, lying, Dunning-Kreuger NPCs that the rest of the civilization suffers from. Look at this civilizations "representatives" for example.
So of course it all end up in grift.
This is why any or all lack of filter dooms a movement from the start. The libertarian party and it's desperation for warm bodies is exactly how it got pozzed into oblivion and ridicule.

I think initiation rituals should make a comeback. Just saying.

My wise barber once explained the rule of the disciples as in Jesus and his followers. A rule that applies in every organization no matter how many are involved.

You have a leader, eleven followers and one that wants to be the leader.

Just who was that there ComicGate feller? Slipped through my neurons someways. I always just imagine a two-face image.Hmm.

Asking VD to finish Sea of Swords right now is like asking Joseph Stalin to finish a sequel to War and Peace during the siege of Moscow. I'm surprised he bothers when skills of organization and management are clearly where he excels, more so than 99% of "conservatives."

"wanted to fix the enemy"

It's amazing the extent to which that mind set exists on the conservative side. They really believe their enemies just need to be shown the light, or shamed into living up to their stated principles. Pathetic.

True. The American "Right" has been bringing magic markers to street fights for decades - and hence, they've (by design, I believe) conserved precisely... nothing.

Pretending the spiritual battle does not exist is a losing strategy.

Once you see it, compromise with evil is not an option either.

Compromise looks great in the short term, so many prefer to do it.

Art must be Good. If it is not, it is meaningless.

Blogger Dark Herald September 08, 2020 3:14 PM

The fall of the Dragons was disappointing but inevitable.

There is always somebody on the Left that wants to be the Grand SMOF but no one on the Right really wants the job.

I will come as a surprise to no one that John Scalzi won for best novel of the year with The Last Emperox.

I was expecting it but I still needed a shot of whiskey to get the vomit taste out of my mouth.

Blogger Dark Herald September 08, 2020 3:27 PM

In case you want to know how they gamed it.

Someone on the Dragon Awards committee got the Library Association involved.

Blogger Reader September 08, 2020 3:46 PM

One can be sure God-Emperor Trump is no such money-grubbing grifter. He will probably leave office less wealthy than when he started, which I am guessing would put him in the very small minority of all PsOTUS. The Obamas and Clintons have probably been the most egregious and corrupt profiteers in the office. Scum raised to the highest office in the land is still scum. That is, in fact, why the enemies of America put them there in the first place.

Blogger RadixMalorum September 08, 2020 4:01 PM

This sounds like what EVS and ComicsGate has become.

Blogger Dole September 08, 2020 4:19 PM

I just want to add to this the moaners that believe nothing can be done to keep the SJWs out, and that the SJWs are all powerful, which is the reason they take over everything.

Yes, the defeatist attitude is so strong that the moaners can not even keep people unsure of their genders in check. The defeatist attitude is made even more comical since Vox and others have already figured out what to do and even written an easy to follow guide. Yet STILL the cuckservatives are sure of their defeat and refuse to learn.

This is why I support projects like yours and some of JDA's, have patience, and pray for all the community and our allies. Yes, it takes time, especially when it means creating alternate systems first. Very pleased with outcomes to date and honestly rate them very high. Truth, Beauty, and Goodness are worth supporting and nurturing.

I have no doubt the entrenched elites will go after Trump and his family long after he leaves office. He's made a huge sacrifice running for president and that shows where he stands. He has my complete support.

Even if he "stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody" he wouldn't lose my vote. Because chances are that guy he shot will have been a pedo rapist or some other scum that society is better off without.

As a casual follower of the right, I have noticed that the the grifters seem to network. I see a new right wing woman Candace Owens, but she then starts propping Ben. Okay, that is a pretty good sign that she is also a scamster.

Blogger Pseudotsuga September 08, 2020 5:10 PM

Sad Puppies wanted to "fix" the enemy? If I recall correctly, Sad Puppies (round 1) was actually Correia setting out to prove his assertion that the voting was partisan.
But other than that, yes, the sequence is right. There is no apolitical stance possible with the left, in which the personal is political. For years, I made the mistake of thinking that there could actually be a middle ground possible. But now I recognize that the middle ground was an illusion, and never actually offered up in good faith.
That's one thing which makes me angry -- the Left never actually exhibits good faith. They don't want to actually argue or reason or discuss or reach a compromise, and any attempt to do so merely furthers their agenda.
Being a nice guy conserves nothing.

Amusingly, over here in Aus', and way more often than not, the left throws characters like this straight under a bus pretty much the moment their political usefulness comes to an end.

I've often thought it emblematic of their hate for pretty much everyone.

The grifter comes in positioned to sacrifice nothing and gain everything. If a grifter should appear to have made any sacrifice, it is for show and simply a maneuver for greater gains. These individuals have no conscious, no morality, no ethics. They are their own cause and will say anything to further that cause. They are vile opportunists.

Those who grift on conservative values smell the blood from an unrepresented majority that has been silenced by systemic oppression, then proceed to milk these suckers for all they can without making one iota of positive difference to the cause. That the Beast is willing to give them a voice should alert one to this truth. See Fox News. Or better yet, stop watching that crap. Tucker Carlson must be the carrot of truth being dangled in front of the dupes so as to keep leading them by that long, long, stick of lies.

Blogger Wild Ape September 08, 2020 7:16 PM

I wasted my time and breath years ago on Black Gate arguing with the SJWs about the Sad Puppies. At the time it was hard to wrap my head around that the SJWs were disingenuous and actually meant it when they wished our immolation. The did not fear the Sad Puppies, but they did fear the Rabid Puppies. The Rabid Puppies were the ones that made headway and why? Because the Rabid Puppies refused to bend, they treated fire with fire, and they spun them up into a frenzy. Meanwhile the SJWs who couldn't beat the Rabids vented on the Sad Puppies because the Sad Puppies played by civil rules even though every olive branch they offered only emboldened the point and screech crowd. They used civility as a beat stick. That was when I switched. We don't need kindness or tolerance because these are things the SJWs do not understand. They need ruthless suppression because pain and powerlessness is something that penetrates their skulls. It tends to tame and civilize them. I just wish I had understood this sooner and not have wasted my time trying to get along with their gamma cult. Club 'em like baby seals!

Based on what happened with the NY prosecutor office seizing the build the wall fund, most conservatives rightly see potential political prosecutions as a reason to not concentrate money that isn't going to be spent immediately.

To steal a line from Tolkien, ASoS is never late. Nor is it early. It will arrive precisely when it means to.

There are only two methods of conflict resolution: discussion and force.
When discussion is not allowed, only the second option is possible.
Then both parties have the ability to use force.

Cowards make terrible leaders and so do people who lie and old 2face is both. 2face had a video up a long time ago where he made a bunch of excuses and some fibs about why he didn't sign a bunch of stuff he agreed to sign to raise money for cancer. Rather than just admit he screwed up and do it late, he told some ridiculous lie which we would later use about VD. He basically said the guy tricked him by calling him on the phone. 2face, not wanting to be rude was 1/2 paying attention to him when he apparently agreed to do it. Not wanting to be caught in a bold faced lie if a recording existed, he had to admit to agreeing to it and so he did the whole 'I wasn't paying close attention and was only humoring the guy' It is such a transparently fake excuse. He lost face, not saved it. He showed he was a man with no character.

I would rather be known as someone who is late and honest and trustworthy than a liar and a fink. Not to mention a coward.

4. A few semi-celebrity grifters come in, act as leaders to either get themselves awards and/or money.

Uhh, the money is the reason. I can't prove it, but I'd be willing to bet that when you see some washed up hack actor railing against Trump, or singing Imagine, you're looking at an income producing opportunity for B through D list actors to keep the debt treadmill going. I'm sure if you could sit with them in their agent's office you'd hear conversations like this:

"Rob, baby. Nobody wants to finance your documentary of the plight of the transgender pedophiles in America."

"Look, Chaim, I need at least a half a million to pay off my wind turbine energy losses and my side piece's mortgage."

"There's hope! Let me put you in touch with this political group that wants to preserve democracy for everybody except White people. They've financed a number of losers...I mean artists that are being repressed by the man because of their artistic genius."

Perhaps in part because you have a Westminster parliamentary system that doesn't provide quite the opportunities for graft? Also, based on your size in population and economy, both smaller than Canada by a bit, plus being somewhat "out of the way" ... I wonder, no doubt the relative sizes of the forms of graft are different. Also, is anyone going to pay your politicians a lot of money to foment a Color Revolution, or protection money to maybe forestall one or worse?

For the Clintons, their political usefulness ended no earlier than 2016. And some of that has to do with Obama, who's infamously even more all about himself, inflicting incalculable damage to the Democratic party (one reason the best they can come up with for 2020 is Joe and the Hoe). For 2016, specifically funding, the Clinton Machine had to win the nomination if for no other reason that they had the money the party desperately needed (not that it helped in the end, despite outspending Trump and the Republicans 2:1). Obama has kept control of his Organizing for America, now Organizing for Action, and it's no accident he's leasing a mansion in D.C., where Valerie Jarrett has as I recall not just an office but living space.

Note also some fraction of the graft happens after formally leaving office, as in delayed bribes. I don't need to detail the Clintons' grifting during and after Bill's presidency, but for during Obama's, see Peter Schweizer's Secret Empires: How the American Political Class Hides Corruption and Enriches Family and Friends, after trashing Mitch McConnell for example, he has a chapter on Obama's "smash and grab" strategy, where companies and industries were trashed, and his friends were somehow perfectly positioned to acquire assets for pennies on the dollar.

Even when I was a SJW, I thought the whole reaction to the Puppygate saga was ridiculous.

It was one of those little things that started my push away from the SJW mindset at least.

Seeing Elizabeth Moon get cancelled for telling the truth about Muslims also chapped my hide.

One of the most violent and regressive cults in the world, supported by the left.

And they still bash on Christians.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings.

I don't agree with everything you say, but I certainly appreciate the fact you never backed down, and you don't let this place devolve into a hivemind.

It is refreshing.
