2020 as 1850

The idea here is considerably less interesting than the source, as it appears that even the converged champions of diversity are beginning to understand that the future is unlikely to bring smooth sailing into their imagined utopia of tolerance, equality, progress, inclusion, and diversity, as The Atlantic explains "Why the 2020s Could Be as Dangerous as the 1850s":

If Joe Biden beats Donald Trump decisively next week, this election may be remembered as a hinge point in American history: the moment when a clear majority of voters acknowledged that there’s no turning back from America’s transformation into a nation of kaleidoscopic diversity, a future that doesn’t rely on a backward-facing promise to make America great again. But that doesn’t mean the voters who embody the nation’s future are guaranteed a lasting victory over those who feel threatened by it.

With Biden embracing America’s evolution and Trump appealing unrestrainedly to the white voters most fearful of it, the 2020 campaign marks a new peak in the most powerful trend shaping politics in this century. Over the past two decades, and especially since Barack Obama’s election in 2008, voters have re-sorted among the parties and thus reconfigured the central fault line between them. Today Republicans and Democrats are divided less by class or region than by attitudes toward the propulsive demographic, cultural, and economic shifts remaking 21st-century America. On one side, Republicans now mobilize what I’ve called a “coalition of restoration”; on the other, Democrats assemble a “coalition of transformation.”

So far so good. The only two errors so far is the suggestion that Joe Biden will win the election; not only will he not decisively beat Donald Trump, he will be decisively beaten, as well as the assumption that the "coalition of restoration" is necessarily shrinking. The Atlantic is making the usual left-wing error of the Ricardian Vice, in which all variables save one are held constant. Just as leftists never understand that people's behavior changes in response to tax hikes, it also changes in response to demographic changes.

The next section is where it all goes awry. It is downright comical to posit that California, of all places, is the "hopeful vision" for the way forward for a victorious coalition of transformation. Then again, what does The Atlantic know about the West Coast or the ruthless preferences of the increasingly powerful second coming of the Aztec Empire? Would the return of the Mexica to the Southwest be better characterized as restoration or transformation?

The inexorable change coming to the Democratic Party could make the GOP even more reactionary. Biden has defined himself as a “transitional” figure, and demands are already building for a Democratic leadership corps that reflects the party’s increasing reliance on young people and people of color. It’s not hard to imagine that by 2024, Democrats will be led by presidential nominee Kamala Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian descent; vice-presidential nominee Pete Buttigieg, an openly gay man; and House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries, who would be the first Black person to hold that post. Much like Obama did in 2008, such a roster would symbolize a changing America in a way that inspires the coalition of transformation—but terrifies many in the coalition of restoration. “It would touch on everything that a lot of Trump supporters were reacting to when they supported him in 2016—this sense of feeling threatened by the [challenge] to white supremacy in the U.S.,” Schaffner told me.

California over the past 30 years may offer a hopeful vision of how America could work through these coming conflicts. During the 1990s, as minorities were slowly becoming a majority of the state’s population, racial tension soared. With preponderant support from white voters, conservatives passed a series of ballot initiatives targeting those minority groups, including Proposition 187, which cut off services for undocumented immigrants; a ban on bilingual education; and tougher criminal-sentencing laws. But once California passed the racial tipping point and the sky didn’t fall, tensions dramatically eased. In years since, the state has repealed much of the hard-line agenda it approved during the 1990s. If that’s the nation’s path, the next few years may be rocky, but today’s political fault lines could slowly dissolve. Americans could re-sort themselves around less volatile differences over taxes and spending, instead of their feelings about racial and cultural change.

The alternative is the 1850s scenario. On that path, the Republican coalition remains centered on culturally conservative white Americans who grow more embittered and radical as evidence mounts that they cannot stop the emerging majority from instituting its agenda. If this many non-college-educated and Christian white voters are receptive to a Trump-style racial-identity message when they constitute a little more than 40 percent of the population, there’s little reason to believe fewer of them will respond to it when they fall to 38 or 36 percent as the decade proceeds. Already, research by the Vanderbilt University political scientist Larry Bartels has found that a stunningly high percentage of Republican voters express sympathy for an array of antidemocratic sentiments, such as the half who agreed that the “traditional American way of life is disappearing so fast that we may have to use force to save it.”

There is no alternative. The nation has already been defeated and the state is now in the same process of partition and separation that Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have gone through, although there is little reason to believe that the dissolution of the United States empire will be anywhere nearly as peaceful, given that the various peoples are far more distinct than the Czechs and the Slovaks or the Serbs and the Croats.

It is interesting, though, to see how more and more people on both sides of the political aisle are beginning to recognize that the endgame for empire is in sight.

What disingenuous bullshit.

The State didn't "repeal" anything; the leftist 9th Circuit did. The people were blatantly denied their say in the governance of their state.

I have to laugh when people talk about California being a Blue State- it is not.

Another difference between those years: In 1850, many Americans were leaving everything behind and making the hard trek to settle in California. Now it's so great there that they're leaving it in droves.

So much pilpul in that article. They can never decide whether to frame Trump voters as angry and scary or fearful and pathetic, so they just toss them both in. This line is revealing: "Americans could re-sort themselves around less volatile differences over taxes and spending..." The Prometheans really liked it in the 90s/2000s when the only real difference between the parties was economic policy, which lends itself well to mild class divisions, and social issues were relegated to campaign chatter.

Biden may describe himself as a "transitional" figure on the East Coast, but in the Midwest they're trying to sell him as a return to boring normalcy, to the time when you didn't have to hear people yelling about what the president said every day. They really have no coherent campaign except "Trump caused muh covid somehow and we're not him."

Such original thoughts by the cosmopolitans at the Atlantic. Someone must have told them about Bleeding Kansas, the Kansas-Missouri border wars and guerilla fighting.

How horrible that Americans don't want their taxes to go towards people who don't like them and want to overthrow their nation.

In my opinion, and I will bow to people smarter/better informed, the single worst thing the union police did was openly obey orders to favor the Jewish/Black terrorists, and come down on whites defending their cars/property with both boots.

We live in a middle/upper middle class suburb, and the day the terrorists said they were coming, the cops literally escorted the mob and as they swarmed cars on the main roads who got trapped, the pigs arrested white victims who tried to pull away as the blacks jumped on and rocked their cars, for vehicular assault.

People get the government they tolerate.

If we tolerate having our government hijacked by the judiciary, legislature and unions, that's the government we have.

A little violence in the '60s - burning out farmers who hired illegal field hands, beating supporters of lefty politicians like Reagan - could have prevented everything that's going on today in California. My parents' generation was absolutely never going to do that: they trusted their government, and the government said not to.

Cops are your enemies. Now even the normies are starting to figure that out.

It was the worst thing the union cops could do in the sense of being an own goal. There are a whole lot of cop-sucking Fudds who want nothing more than to keep on ignoring reality so they don't have to deal with it. Rubbing their faces in reality makes it harder for them to go on ignoring it. Most of the Fudds will never act against the cops, but after this kind of thing, fewer of them are going to support the cops, fewer of them will spout off against the few who do act.

In 4GW terms, the cops lost hearts and minds.

California over the last 30 years? You mean the state that used to be the prosperous, dynamic, economic and cultural juggernaut that commanded the world's attention and admiration, and has in the last 30 years become a third-world hellhole with rolling blackouts, human shit running down the streets, failing damns and a two-tiered economy with uber rich and ultra poor and almost no middle class left?

California, the state where the Governor-fuhrer Newsom ordered families to celebrate Thanksgiving outside? California, the state that demonstrated it took less than two generations of immigration and liberalism to bring the most prosperous western society down to third-world poverty?

The phrase "shit-for-brains" was invented for people who believe the last 30 years of CA is a symbol of hope.

What I anticipate isn't so much 1850 as 1808 in the Spanish colonies when Napoleon conquered Spain. The colonies more or less all revolted against Spanish rule. Because the colonies all had a class based society, there was no consensus about who should rule, the different groups took turns oppressing each other. Unstable, weak, and oppressive governments was the outcome.

Ron Unz believes The Atlantic to be correct. He has several lengthy articles on his site explaining why he believes this. I think his analysis misses some very important points, but he makes the best case yet that I have read.

The whole "muh pension" has always been a thing, even Richard Pryor was doing bits about it in '72, about how the "...'I Spy' cops, the brother had rope more niggers to keep his job, you know, I ain't losin' my pension, nigga!"

Police blow with the wind, and right now the wind seems to be from the Left.
When this whole George Floyd bullshit hit the fan, I did a visual audit. There were zero cops to be found on the 7-or-8 overlapping jurisdictions DMV roads until around a month ago, and then it was only on the highways. They were keeping a low profile as they didn't want to fuck up another arrest and give offenders a reason to cry about them some more.

This emboldened the usual suspects to do whatever they wanted, and I recorded more roadkill in that time than ever in 20 years, which indicated more than usual high levels of speeding.

Speeding is the easiest thing to bust someone for, and there was no one around. They were holed up in their stations waiting this thing out.

Now what do you think is gonna happen when SHTF for real?

These are supposedly people who are educated and embrace change, but desk work no longer pays higher than fabrication work in much of America. Business men have bestowed the gifts of efficiency on everyone except their chosen few, leading to paperwork monkeys across the country making a lot less than more useful trades.

It's also interesting how they try to pathologize people for having and expressing different interests and goals that don't include bulldozing everything that came before them.

It really floored me when I first realized that leftists experience culture like a tourist experiences a taco stand. An idle convenience of no real value, except in the moment. To be permanently trapped in a tourist mindset, with no roots must be a horrifying way to live.

WuFlu helped because revenuing from speeders is a volume-driven exercise. It's not cost-effective for an officer to sit in a cruiser for eight hours if traffic volumes are down 90-95%.

Laziness is also why lidar (light (laser) detection and ranging) has not proliferated.

Lidar guns work like a rifle. Now imagine trying to use one during a four-hour stretch watching heavy traffic, trying to pick off speeders.

That's far too much work versus playing on one's smartphone while blasting Ka-band radar waves miles down the highway and letting the radar unit's DSP work its magic on the return signals.

The racial message does not attract a minority according to the author. Then why is it that the black community votes based on identity politics? Then why is it that democrats focused on minorities excessively promote identity politics? If anything, minorities are MORE concerned over preserving their identity and voting along racial lines.

Now I don't believe the author believes a word he wrote. But for those who actually believe this nonsense, I can't wait for them to discover that diversity is not a strength. There will be no empathy whatsoever.

I would laugh at the Atlantic article except for the seriousness of our situation. In a few days we we will know whether or not its civil war 2.0, the hot version, not the low level [relative] version we are now in. The antifa/blm factions and their cohorts, are becoming very well armed and trained. This to the point I'm no longer sure that rural folk can successfully fight them off without a lot of organization and similar training enacted very very quickly. Oh sure, there would be huge casualties on each side, but at days end, would the mothers, children of the rural war fighters have anyone left to defend them. You can sure as hell count on one thing, the propensity of the left mobs to date leave no doubt that any policy of mercy has no place in their world. And, it should have none in ours.

Trump will have his victory. The vote turnout will be monumental. The vote fraud will be monumental. I suspect the reaction and support of the main line military, not necessarily to include all the officer core, will be critical. I just don't see our military rank and file letting Trump be removed from office.
I am all for following the law. In the presence of massive vote fraud, massive civil disobedience by the assholes on the left, I'm willing to make an exception. Around where I live there as been little arms fire heard. Until here the last few days before Nov 3 that is. That precious ammunition has to be conserved for the battles to come.
May God watch over us all.

But is it possible to preserve the positive aspects of that America to have them again in one or more of the nations that the US breaks into? I think so. Nevertheless, there has been ethnic conflict in that state. Too much. And its level of civilization has markedly declined in recent decades. Notably where white folk are weakest, like in San Francisco.

I despise this Narrative by which “everything’s fine because only blacks and browns are killing themselves and eachother in unacceptable numbers.” Remember the sequence from Fight Club where they demonstrate how hard it is to instigate a fight with strangers? Not impossible, yet highly improbable in this current format. Balkanization along ethnic lines seems to be the outcome either slowly or at an accelerated rate; White Flight on steroids. We have too many non-Americans and ideological enemies within our borders.

The cities, excluding the darkies, are for Mount St. Helens-style hold-outs. They already are the domain of non-thinking chumps and Communist assholes.

Barring a hot Civil War, which will be guerilla in the extreme and last for a decade, with a clear winner with a very clear agenda with a clear leader (i.e. Spanish Civil War) and a complete and utter crackdown on Communists, etc., it is not likely.

However, I am still gaming the outcome. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

@27 I agree, as you are 100% correct.

Also add the volume of court appearances for those who correctly wanted to challenge their ticket. Add the time it takes to mask everyone up in addition to the already time-consuming task of checking them for weapons at the courthouses. Add the time it takes for the average judge to get his/her ass in gear. Add the time it takes for dumbasses who don't speak English to plead their case (and I mean Ebonics, not Spanish).

The arithmetic is staggering. You'd have to dismiss the cases wholesale if you want to keep from going to bed at 12 p.m. or you'll be sitting in on the cases till the next assizes, and still not be done.

Either way, the state loses money to double the rate they've been knocking us all dead for years. That's if they realize it. Shit, the people getting tickets realize that.

Whites fled California in droves and are still trying to escape by the millions. Where will they flee when the entire country is California? We must make a stand where we are and that success or failure on the local level will determine the territory of the remnant.

Does this mean you are going black pill to some degree?

Black pill means all is lost and there's nothing to be done.

That's not the case.

There's no easy answer, the train has already jumped the tracks and is plunging into the chasm. It just hasn't hit bottom yet. Or, if you'd rather, Willey E Coyote has run off the cliff and is just now starting to remember gravity. Either way, there's ruin ahead.

But that's not Black Pill. Something can still be saved from the wreckage, and something will have to be rebuilt upon it. The next dozen years or so are all about being in the best shape for the aftermath. Trump buys some time and space to be better prepared.

Far from the despair of the black pill, I embrace the crash as it is a chance to solve problems that are realistically unsolvable outside of a crisis bad enough to be undeniable even to the denialists.

Desiring a leaner, greener, more affluent, more spacious, more harmonious nation with a youth population that is working rather than rioting is racial reactionarism?

That must explain why the highest IQ nations of the World are projected to have significantly smaller populations by 2100.

China, Japan, South Korea etc., are plagued with growing populations of low IQ racial groups just like America.
It's not that they see an automation revolution coming and don't want a mass of obsolete idle people.
It's not that they want a better quality of life.

“what are you gonna do with your'e Feminists”

Who heads your house, a man or a woman? The feminist has risen in direct correlation to the removal of masculine consequence. The fat little white T-shirt, with the duckbill haircut, would not hit on your woman if you pummeled them to a pulp like men used to for also men.

Feminists use emotional violence, while the physical violence of men has been removed. There is no balance, no compliment. A societal breakdown of a nature changes that, or at least provides the opportunity. The actual question is, what are feminists going to do when they are faced with the reality of actual men. Men who kill people and break things, in the natural? Ask the Eurasian Amazons, which were but a blip on history.

In the 80s and 90s, Compton was the black place to be. They ran that joint.

Check out the demographics now.
That's a brown town now.
Same as many other black majority hoods from the recent past, taken over by the Asians and Hispanics and a little white gentrification.
Most were pushed out, but a whole lot were killed in ethnic skirmishes, in the last 30 or so yrs.

Compton was working class whites. My MIL went to the same high school as Snoop Dogg. The exceptions being that she looked like a carbon copy of the Queen of England, didn't drink or smoke, was highly religious, had good grades, graduated, got a job, married and had a kid and a full, faithful marriage. You know, really superficial differences of melanin that don't make a difference at all in culture or humanity. It's just different shades of poor people, amirite?

I'm in a state that people flee to. They always mention the resources. Then they get here, and they think we are "mean" and they long to go home. There's no connection between their thought processes and their results, and our thought processes, and our results.

I work with a woman who cries at the office, in the office, every single day, because she wants to go home to her own state. She thought they could move for jobs, and everywhere was the same. She had grown up on military bases, so she really, truly thought the entire world was the same- it was always the same where she was, with little local details that you could enjoy like a circus ride, and then go home to the military base, or lord your exotic experiences elsewhere over the rest of the locals.

@49 Jack Amok

So MAGA is impossible?

History suggests it is highly unlikely, unless Trump or his successor is willing to go full Sulla.

A) depends on what someone means by "America" and B) even Sulla wasn't able to really fix Rome as he didn't restore the middle class destroyed by the filthy patrician class grabbling up their farms in the wake of Hannibal's scourge of the countryside.

And using slaves created by the wars instead of hiring their fellow countrymen to work the farms, from what I remember reading about the aftermath of the 2nd and 3rd Punic Wars. The last especially made the patrician class too damned wealthy too quickly. I suppose we can see history rhyming in our tech overlords and political families that got wealthy in years or a decade or two.

@55 Sean:

If we only got Sulla, it would be great. We'll more likely get the bunch who murdered Caeser, and then the bunch who murdered the murderers. It's that second team that comes in, and having watched the play, they know how to score and stay in power.

The problem is that if your republic is not already dead, going full Sulla kills it for sure by establishing these sorts of precedents. And our republic died no later than Obama and Hillary's sedition against Trump. Punishing them will not restore it, because that establishes the precedent that you can't lose power, or lose an election without severe consequences. Those of us fearing the Left will Romanov Trump and his family are worried this trend will continue escalating as it historically has.

She's from Portland, and no one in the country has more experience in trying to thread the needle of constraints by shitlibs above her while doing the most possible under their orders, and disobeying them when she can get away with it. In terms of damage limitation there's probably no better pick. You wish for a Rizzo, but he'd be fired in a second by the current political establishment, which is crazy enough to think about passing a law against physical barriers in stores to protect the cashiers from their "customers."

"California over the past 30 years may offer a hopeful vision of how America could work through these coming conflicts."

California is not a hopeful vision of anything good but it is a nightmare of what awaits the remaining 49 states.

"During the 1990s, as minorities were slowly becoming a majority of the state’s population, racial tension soared."

Hint, hint, hint. Somehow the Negro was part of this transformation of California... which is pure nonsense. Before 1950, the black population of the state was NEVER more than 2 percent and very often it was less than 1 percent. In 1960, blacks were 5.6 percent, then increased to 7.0 percent in 1970, and PEAKED in 1980 with 7.7 percent. The black population has declined ever since to 6.2 percent in 2010. The only "minority" that matters in California is Mexican, legal and illegal.

"With preponderant support from white voters, conservatives passed a series of ballot initiatives targeting those minority groups..."

Conservatives are the white voters in California and each of these ballot initiatives were passed with popular majorities. You know, referenda are the last resort of democratic societies.. and each one of them were ultimately nullified, not by the votes of the "growing minority population" but by the very undemocratic edicts of Federal judges.

"But once California passed the racial tipping point..."

Baloney. The racial tipping point is very concentrated in the state. Governor Jerry Brown (Democrat) was elected four times and his Lt. Governor (Gavin Newsom) is the present governor. Had there been any sort of racial tipping point, it certainly would have been reflected in the race of the elected officials. What we see instead in California is some of the longest (self) serving white officials in the country. Nancy Pig-lousy has been in Congress since 1987, about 34 years. Dianne Feinstein was first elected to the US Senate in 1992, only 28 years ago. Just where is this "racial tipping point"? It certainly has nothing to do with Negroes.

America is dead, long live America.

None of the European countries are the same country as they were 200 years ago. In some cases this is good in others it is bad.

MAGA all depends on what comes next. Trump is simply the reprieve. Prepare, get right with God as the war is coming. I pray that what comes next for America places us on God's side. Even if it doesn't then we are resistance and not the army.

That's hilarious. It couldn't possibly be that most departments can barely afford cost-of-living raises, new tires or vehicle repairs, ammo, or a halfway decent training budget for state-mandated continuing education. No, it's just those damn donut-scarfing, candy crushing road pirates are too damn lazy.

I'd fucking love to have lidar in my unit, but that's not likely to happen any time in the next decade, at least. My little city's not gonna pay to replace perfectly functional radar units with lidar.

If you actually want to understand the problem of institutional inertia in policing, a good example is the history of how long it took departments to transition from issuing revolvers to issuing semi-autos. Big, obvious technology advantage, but the old wheel guns "worked just fine."

If this is something you wanna bitch about, call out the administrators and city councils who won't buy the equipment or pay for training. It isn't the street cops who have the final say in the matter.
