Apple gets them again

I don't use Apple products. I had a //e, an original Macintosh, and a Macintosh SE, but I haven't used one since. So this just news of another charger change just amuses me:

Apple is planning to release a new thinner and lighter MacBook Air that will launch in the second half of this year or early next year, according to Bloomberg.

The report said Apple will plan to market the device as a higher-end version of the current MacBook Air, which Apple released in November with its new M1 processor. That device was among three new Apple computers to make the switch away from Intel chips.

Apple’s Mac revenue was up 28% year over year, when the company reported its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings in October. That boost was helped by millions of people forced to work from home because of Covid.

The new MacBook Air will include Apple’s magnetic charging system called MagSafe, according to the report. MagSafe was used in Apple laptops for years before it was removed over two years ago in place of newer USB-C charging. But, it’s convenient because it allows the charger to pop out easily and helps prevent the laptop from being dragged off a surface if someone pulls the cord or trips on it. MagSafe is also used in the latest iPhone 12 phones, though it has a different design and relies on a magnetic puck accessory that wirelessly charges the phones.

Pro tip: if you keep buying from them, they'll keep doing this to you.

They make nice products, but I don't understand how anyone can stomach how much control over the user experience they demand, or that they keep their customers hostage to crap like this.

Blogger Keith January 22, 2021 12:10 PM

That’s kind of a tough one. A lot of MacBook Air customers were livid that Apple nixed the mag charger in the first place and demanded it be returned.

Surprised they have one shred of IP left in their name. There have to be CCP knockoffs available internally in China. Anything offshored to China will eventually be stolen. Apple was one of the first in, "special relationship" vendors manufacturing in China.

Blogger Edjamacator January 22, 2021 12:21 PM

Good. I'd bet most users are leftists, and are unable and unwilling to learn, so let them get screwed over. I hope Apple puts a chip in the charger that causes it to die after a few months, forcing them to buy a new one constantly. You know they would without a complaint.

Blogger Ahuehuete January 22, 2021 12:22 PM

Apple's customers are a cargo cult. They will take whatever abuse Apple heaps on them and fall on their knees, thanking Apple for it.

Blogger Warunicorn January 22, 2021 12:22 PM

I bought a Mac around 2008, when I was doing a lot of traveling. Macs just made the whole hooking up on random networks/printers so much easier.
In 2021, you'd be an idiot to buy a Mac, unless you have specific graphics or music needs (not amateur, but production-quality needs).
Otherwise, get a Linux system - can run off cheap components, pretty much easy to install, and can run off the Raspberry Pi's.
For laptops, either get a Netbook, or a dirt-cheap generic box that you can install Linux on.

If you are interested in right to repair, esp. as applied to Apple products, might I recommend Louis Rossman? He has videos on Youtube(boo hiss) and Invidious where he teaches Macbook repair, good business ownership, and the state of the real estate market in the Big Shitty. It "just works" until you want to do something that Apple doesn't like.

The next frontier for Big Tech is rumored to be the Woke Wearable, a biointegrated* wearable AI that does all the speaking so you don't have to. For example did you know that it's not OK to use any variation of "Goodbye" or "Bye"? These words have their origin in the noninclusive phrase "God be with you" and some people don't believe in God. Woke Wearable is multilingual and can also help you avoid other inappropriate words such as "Adios." WW will even provide feedback in the form of a series of tiny** electric shocks to assist you in making the appropriate facial expressions and hand movements for any given situation. Did someone say something courageous and woke? Smile, nod, and verbally approve. Hateful or bigoted speech activates the integrated Facebook AutoDox system that will alert the community to the presence of a Nazi. No need to worry about the price, Woke Wearables is educational and can be automatically funded*** through your federal student loan account. And if the Woke Wearable detects that you're not completely satisfied, it will simply make an appointment for surgical removal**** at your nearest Apple store.

If only we could get AMD to release a bit more source so we can core/libre boot their CPUs! Then we'd be set for a decade at least. Security / verifiability-wise. Their GPU drivers are already FOSS. And yes, AMD mobile CPUs have the ability to be very low power, much closer to the M1 - it is just the many laptop makers need to get it together and stop being so reactionary.

To be fair, I think this represents Apple realizing that the Magsafe charging cord was developed for a reason. Anyone who has worked with a laptop in a conference setting has had people tripping over power cords. Powering with USB-C was a stupid, stupid idea.

One thing I've noticed about the computer industry is that they REALLY don't learn from past experience.

Blogger Verbrannt January 22, 2021 1:34 PM

Apple has always treated the consumers like suckers. Back in the day they would consistently advertise their computers as being "cheaper" than the PC platforms - only to make note once you read the ad closely they weren't including the monitor in that price (dafuq?), which in that case would make it considerably more expensive. That, and you couldn't change the parts out on it yourself like you could a PC.

Apple is a cult, not a computer.

Blogger Dark Herald January 22, 2021 1:44 PM

Hey, fair is fair.

Those early Macs were 4.0 factories if you were going to college in the Eighties.

A scowling professor requiring a paper that was 25 pages long, double spaced with one inch margins, and footnotes, would be left in a state of near simian wonder if you threw in a couple of pie charts.

And that was after messing around with font size and 2.5 spacing.

In real terms a 25 page paper was really only 19 pages thanks to the Macintosh.

Blogger Filter Bear January 22, 2021 1:45 PM

Blogger Darien January 22, 2021 2:12 PM

Apple gets more anti-consumer every year. Up until just after the death of Steve Jobs, what customize-ability they had in their laptops vanished with soldered on memory, non user-removable drives. The latest iOS software versions slow your device and can't be reverted or downgraded. The right to even repair is under threat with how they work with the government to restrict or seize replacement parts. Their walled garden has more thorns than ever.

I suspect that 'hackintoshes' (Regular PC hardware running Apple's OS) have risen so much in popularity in the recent years that Apple has been trying to push proprietary features like the touch bar on their laptops, and more recently, their own custom CPU processors. They've just stopped being competitive in any meaningful way beyond holding people hostage if they are invested in their ecosystem.

Blogger Harambe January 22, 2021 2:28 PM

I bought a MacBook in 2009 after graduating for $2,600. One year later the motherboard went and was told by Apple that there was nothing they could do and I'd have to buy a new one. No other options given and no pity or compassion, just a shrug of their shoulders.

Blogger Hamilton January 22, 2021 5:33 PM

Depends on how you look at it. I was a long time Android user and every top tier phone I bought slowed down after 6 months and at month 18 the damn things were stuttering stammering junk. Plus there is the Google services privacy nightmare. iPhones last 3-4 years before any noticeable slowdown, and you can get 5 years if you aren’t a power user. Try that with Android who’s too phones cost the same as iPhones.

Blogger One Deplorable DT January 22, 2021 5:49 PM

Whether this is good or bad depends on whether they are restoring the old magsafe port or introducing a new one. If the old one, bravo. Should have never dropped it in the first place.

Apple needs to go back to the MBP designs from 2015, just before they went USB-C only. Only make RAM upgradable. And don't do something as stupid as gluing the battery in. Ports, upgradable RAM, upgradable SSD, user replaceable battery. Those MBPs were already thin/light enough. Power users want ports and the ability to service/upgrade the key components. Not a tablet.

Oh, and improve the cooling (90% of which is just changing the algorithm which controls the fans).

Blogger One Deplorable DT January 22, 2021 6:01 PM

@45 - I suspect that 'hackintoshes' (Regular PC hardware running Apple's OS) have risen so much in popularity in the recent years that Apple has been trying to push proprietary features like the touch bar on their laptops, and more recently, their own custom CPU processors.

In Apple's defense ARM has legitimate performance potential over x86 at this stage (transistor density) of the game. I won't go into the details why, but we've come full circle and a RISC ISA has real advantages again.

That said, I'm not sure it's worth the loss of backwards compatibility given the fact that if we fired Pajeet and hired real engineers we would have even greater performance advantages.

They've just stopped being competitive in any meaningful way beyond holding people hostage if they are invested in their ecosystem.

Statements like this ignore the software. macOS is UNIX with a polished UI and strong 3rd party commercial support. Linux has the architecture but not the 3rd party support nor the polished UI. Windows has a polished UI and 3rd party support with a trash architecture.

Which is why MBPs are extremely popular with developers, even devs who are doing web or Windows/Linux work.

Blogger mgh January 22, 2021 6:10 PM

Yes, they screw you over, so I mitigate that and buy used because they are reliable. The alternatives are still worse. Google chromebooks are trash for cheapskates. The Microsoft world is what drove me to Apple. Linux is good if you have time to make it your hobby to build and maintain. A major part of why I left Microsoft is I had no more time for the maintaining and debugging of systems.

Apple has never done that. Ever.
Remember the iMac that only had a Cd drive and USB? People lost their minds.
Remember when they dropped DVD drives from their laptops? People went nuts...
Remember when apple dropped headphone ports? People were livid.

And then everyone else followed suit and did exactly what apple did. Love them or hate them, they are consistently ahead of the pack. And now with the M1 blowing away even high end desktop parts, they have a distinct advantage nobody can match. Apple has never been in a stronger position. This is why I’m glad they are now listening to their customers instead of chasing thinner and lighter at all costs. Something tells me once Jonny Ive left, they reassessed what their priorities were.

Super alien, if you’re comfortable with Linux, Unix is similar, but all their user land tools are way out of date and you need Brew to update them.
If all that made sense, cool. If not, check out Lenovo’s small form factor PCs, I got one for like $300 and it runs Linux like a champ. My problem is with Linux as a desktop environment.
However, if you wanna get good at Linux, using as your daily driver and solving all the problems is a great way to learn. Learning Linux cold is the #1 skill I’d advise anyone interested to learn.
Hope that helped!

So Imwill man, how much Apple stock do you own again?

I've worked in tech industry for decades. Apple's revenues don't make sense to me and I don't believe they are real. The revenues have become a sort of false authority that makes everyone think Apple's off-the-shelf junk products have technical merit. Apple didn't beat the other companies in the market, they were simply sidelined.

MPAI. Maybe I was reading idiots' stories and maybe I am one myself.

Because they aren't.
They park that money overseas where it isn't subject to US tax laws.
And are also sitting on a cargo ship worth of debt.

Don't believe the government when they make a lot of hay about being unable to recover data off of any platform, like the SB terrorist's cell phone that everyone was so impressed or outraged by. All I could think about was how there was years of the FBI complaining about being unable to listen to Skype calls, then all of a sudden in 2012 it's common knowledge that they're totally able to. They regularly try to herd people to platforms that they have means to access, because criminals are often stupid and will remember that they read in a legitimate newspaper that x/y/z platform was super secure such that even LE couldn't access it.

Any of the other readers have a guess as to when an Linux OS cell phones might reach the stage where they can be competitive with Android?

The Dems announced today that they will bring Trump to an impeachment trial. Old folk wisdom directs us to let sleeping dogs lie. It behooves the Dems and Reps to move on, but they can't help themselves, can they. Who knows what intelligence Trump has compiled and inventoried on his petty tormentors - c'mon, he was the flippin' President - , but they can't help themselves, can they.

Fifty years in the savage star-struck world of NYC politicking, grafting, grifting, mafia-deflecting, Wall-streeting, etc. Never an indictment. Never a credible allegation against him. Trump emerged unscathed and unsullied from this world, and the Whitehouse was his retirement project. All concerned should let sleeping dogs lie, but they can't help themselves, can they.

First principles, know everything about anybody who can do you harm and who can do you favors. Apply this ino. File it away for future needs. That's been Trump's basic MO for 50 years, and it served him well. One of Trump's mentors as a young man was Roy Cohn (Wow!). He learned from the best in these arts. Anyway, it's going to be fun.

I need a Mac for my work environment, so when I was in the market I bought the highest end maxed out 2009 iMac I could find on ebay. (The last one that was fully user serviceable.) It was $900 and still beats the benchmarks of most new Macs.

I wasn't going to shell out $2500 for a closed system that still isn't as good as a 12 year old device.

@97

They're not gonna do shit. As a private citizen Trump can litigate them into oblivion.

I just bought a M1 2020 Macbook Air. I was hoping for Magsafe because that's what my now-previous computer, 2015 Macbook Pro had, and it's got its definite advantages. Now they put that into the newer machines, and I missed out...oh well. I'll have to just deal with that.

And yeah, I see what Apple does to customers. But me, I'm content with what I have and will make it work for a long time. I'm not too terribly concerned over the fact that they changed it up just after I bought this current machine, because I'll make it work. I don't have the time or expertise to make Linux work, and I absolutely despise and detest Windows 10. So, MacOS it is for me, at least for now.
