UATV update

ATTN UNAUTHORIZED SUBSCRIBERS

UATV will be down for updating to front end 1.1 starting at 7:15 PM EST. 10 minutes of darkness, which should not be confused with The Storm. If you joined UATV in the last two days, you should be receiving your access details and your SG invite in the next two hours.

SocialGalactic, of course, is running strong. Comms good.

UPDATE: The update is complete. Emails going out now.

UPDATE: Mods, the shills are going crazy. Don't hesitate to spam them.

UPDATE by Markku: There are some signs of things moving very fast and I believe there is a real chance of the internet really going down soon. We have discussed how this would most likely be done with the Ilk techies already, and it would be incredibly risky for them to try doing it at the IP level. There are so many critical services depending on IP.

What is much more likely is poisoning the world's DNS servers by Google, after which all the sites are still there, but you can't see them, except ones that are specifically allowed by Google. The nice thing about this is that you can work around it, if you act before it happens. You need to store the necessary information locally, where Google can't get at it.

There is just one step that you need to do right now, before the internet goes down. How to do it depends on your operating system.

If you are on Windows and you have never edited the file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts , things are easy. If you HAVE edited it, you will know you have, because this is advanced use of Windows.

You will need administrator rights to edit this folder in the file exporer. First, rename the old file called hosts, to hosts_backup. Then, put the file you download from the following link, as the new c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts : http://205.251.111.249/win/hosts

Note that some browsers may complain that the file is not "commonly downloaded and may be dangerous". On Chrome, click the up arrow in the complaint, and then "keep".

After that, you will be able to open the URL http://emergency.voxday and you will find further instructions there, in case you find that all other lines of communication have disappeared. Most importantly, there will be a new hosts file behind that link, that will then contain many more entries in it. For any site that has an entry, it will override what the system gets from the poisoned DNS entry. That will allow us to bring all our major services back. Also, if at any time in the future they pull this same trick, this will always be our response. So, you will probably want to keep the addition there. As long as it's only that one additional line, it will not interfere with your normal internet usage. It will simply allow that URL to always be opened.

Currently there aren't any instructions in the link. But if internet goes down, they will appear.

If you have edited the hosts file previously in Windows, or if you are a Linux or Mac user, then add the following line to the end of your existing file. Which on Linux and Mac is /etc/hosts . You will need root rights to modify the file. In most cases you gain them by adding "sudo" in front of the command. So, let's say your editor is nano. You'd write "sudo nano /etc/hosts".

Sorry for reposting from the last blog post, but this is actually a more appropriate forum for my comment. Could a Good Samaritan give me the correct tech support address for UATV? I’d like to subscribe again before the entire web bans us but I’m having trouble with my account, and I’m not sure I’ve found the right address online

Do not give up. Do not accept any doom and gloom diagnosis, just as we will not accept the doom and gloom of the pessimists.

My mother was diagnosed in 2007 with an aggressive form of breast cancer, so aggressive that the care was completely subsidized. The first oncologist told her to come in and prepare for hospice. She got a 2nd opinion and lasted 9 more years.

Get as many opinions as you can, and never give up hope!

Makes sense, and also shows that TGE is in charge. Those that plead in their training and skill in your service to cherish life, do not diminish the value of soul in their efforts.

They work to give respite to our failed and imperfect understanding. Guide their hands to allow soon the words to flow to her loved family of peace and wisdom. She is but fighting an earthly affliction.

Again, in your Son's name. Say no to an end now, and welcome us all by the grace of the Holy Spirit, to be with you later. Amen. And Amen.

Having had a couple of extended stays in the hospital, I would advise to make sure to visit your mom as much as you can whenever she's there or, God forbid, hospice. When I was there, looking at the serious possibility of my own end was made much worse by the loneliness. After a while, all I wanted was to have some family there with me. We will all pray. Have trust in God and know He is merciful. I know people who God has been gracious to and provided great miracles, and I know people (including Milady) healed by being called home. The former is good, the latter is harder but better. We will definitely will be praying for you and for her.

If you are Mac user and you are not comfortable editing your hosts file using the terminal, do this:

First, show hidden files on your system with:

Command + Shift + period

Then navigate to:

Macintosh HD > etc > hosts

Open that file with a text editor that lets you save as sudo. Most modern text editors, such as VS Code or BBEdit will.

Right click on the hosts file and select the editor of your choice.

Then add the following entry:

205.251.111.249 emergency.voxday

Save the file. You can now access the website via:

http://emergency.voxday

What is a more shameful day in the history of Congress?

When a patriotic mob stood up to the crooked politicians approving a fraudulent election?

or

When elected representatives bowed to a foreign leader of a terrorist nation, Israel?

People standing up to politicians is more inspiring than politicians committing treason by prioritizing the supremacist ambitions of another nation and tribe.

America, united most in whoredom to Jews. And these congress creatures talk about ‘terrorism’ and ‘treason’. What a shameless bunch.

But then, Jews control the gods.

What makes you think they wouldn't disrupt routing? If Google started advertising arbitrary routes on BGP, they could easily blackhole targeted addresses.

Blogger Markku January 09, 2021 1:38 AM

Because it would be so much more complicated, and prone to actually disrupting services that are absolutely critical to infrastructure. How many people do you imagine have actually taken these steps in advance? Poisoning the DNS entries would mean that people can't check this information out anymore. It would accomplish 99% of what they want, with very little risk.

Blogger Unknownsailor January 09, 2021 1:40 AM

NOTE: You can also make a desktop shortcut to that IP address, and you functionally get the same result.

One can also make a quick text file of IP addresses for sites one might want to visit in a DNS poisoned environment. Open a command prompt, and at the prompt type ping www.whatever_site_you_want.whatever, and record the IP address you get. Put that in your IP to domain name cheat sheet.

Blogger American Kiwi Bear January 09, 2021 1:41 AM

Hosts file: Do not forget your personal domains if you have any and other favorite web sites, an easy way to see the IP address is simply to ping them (ping xyz.com from the command line). Save the results and you can add it to your hosts file as well so hopefully those sites will be accessible as well.

Blogger Apathy Is Death January 09, 2021 1:48 AM

Done. Thank you for the instructions.

Blogger Andrea Daley Utronebel January 09, 2021 1:48 AM

In a way, a two-party system is bad for democracy. It allows the both parties to scare voters that 'unless you vote for us, the OTHER party will take over and do horrible things'. So, the parties can run crooks and scum. They don't need good candidates as people aren't so much voting FOR a candidate but AGAINST the 'worse evil'.

So, even though most Democratic politicians are crooks and only care about money and status and cater to the super-rich, they pose as 'progressives' who are holding back the tide of Evil Reaction, monstrous greed, and etc. In 2020, no Democrat voted for Biden. They just voted against Evil Trump. They were willing to vote for ANYONE as the lesser evil.

But GOP plays the same game. They say, unless we good patriots protect your rights, it will be the end of the Constitution and all your rights and property. The commies will take over if the Dems win!!! So, conzos hold their noses and vote for the likes of Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton and the rest. But all these guys do is suck up to the rich, which is what the Dem politicians do.

Without a two-party system, candidates would be less able to pull this crap. People would vote more on the merit of the candidate than what party he belongs to. So many conzos voted for Republicans as bulwark against the commie Democrats, but GOP politicians only sucked up to Jews and the rich. So many libbies voted for Democarts as bulwark against fascist Republicans, but Dem politicians only sucked up to Jews and the rich. It's one big con-game.

So, it'd be better if we had a one-party state, which would effectively be a no-party state since everyone would belong to that one party. This way, the people would be less divided over whether someone is Repuglican or Dummicrat. They would simply be individuals voting for an individual candidate on his merit and positions.

Take California. It is Democratic dominant but still has a Republican party. So, even people who are sick of scumbag Democrat politicians still vote for them on the basis that it's better than Evil Nazi Republicans. But if CA were to become 100% Democratic with everyone belonging to the same party, people would look beyond party labels and go with issues. And most likely, someone with the best combo of sane liberal and conservative positions will have a chance.

People say most politicians are moderate or center-left or center-right, but that's not true. They are not so much in the center as on top. They reach the top in politics to suck up to the tops in business. It's not about negotiating between left and right but duping both left and right to reach the top to serve the topper.

Blogger Tinig ng Kampeon January 09, 2021 1:50 AM

We are already collecting IPs. It is precisely the results of that, that you will find in the URL, should they become necessary.

Blogger ZaijiaN January 09, 2021 1:59 AM

ISP-provided DNS servers are notoriously unstable, and I used to recommend switching to google's DNS servers which are far more reliable - but obviously that's a no-go now, so I instead started recommending CloudFlare's. They say that theirs are fast and more private than Google's but I don't know the accuracy of that statement.

CloudFlare's DNS server addresses are 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

You can change your DNS servers in the following places:
* wifi/network router, the ideal solution - uncheck the option to "automatically obtain DNS servers from ISP" and enter the above
* individual computers, less-ideal - go to your network adapter properties and edit "Internet Protocol Version 4" properties

If you are technically inclined, I'd recommend running your own local DNS server like pihole, which allows you to do the above as well as prevent ads, malware, and tracking sites from resolving. Ad-blockers only protect you at the computer browser level, but a pihole will protect your entire network. There are pihole container images which are pretty easy to spin up and there is decent documentation for it.

A line needs to be added for every website, and every service they use for external files such as CSS and JavaScript. But it should not be done yet, because those lines will then freeze the sites to that IP. Normally updates come through the DNS system, which is exactly why it can also be used to sabotage your internet access. The rest of the lines must therefore be added only after it actually happens. All the info will be at the emergency site.

Most websites won't work with just an IP address. There will be a few or even several sites at the same IP address, on the same server, and the software distinguishes between them based on the requested domain name. Accessing a website that is configured like that via the IP address may or may not work, or may take you to another site hosted on that same machine.

@139 Do you mean software for digital modes of communication? If I were going to recommend anyone for EMCOMM, it would be KM4ACK and OH8STN, both on Youtube (be quick about it!). If you're trying to get up to speed digitally right now, it will be a tough row to hoe. My advice would be to find out the nearest ARES or RACES group with a 2m repeater, program it, and listen. If they have an emergency 'net', spend some time learning about how information is passed. Remember, FCC regs state that anyone, in an emergency, is allowed to operate on the amateur bands.

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling January 09, 2021 9:17 AM

@139 jdubs:

Speaking of backups, are there any HAMs here who can recommend a basic ham radio setup to include software? Currently only have a couple of baofeng handhelds until I get my license.

Just a listener, not a two-way ham. So, back around when Trump was elected and I was concerned about this sort of thing, I got a TECSUN PL-380 as a moderately priced recommended at the time by the World Radio TV Handbook (WRTH). Getting a paper copy of the latest version just out now is very recommended, Amazon here. I will check my brand new 2021 copy to see if there are updated stand alone recommendations.

If you've got some computer technical skills, Software Defined Radios (SDRs) are a great option. For VHF and above you might start with a cheap RTL-SDR, that SKU includes an antenna kit that's at minimum OK, just adjust it to the right length and orient it for polarization. For "High Frequency" HF/shortwave, the Airspy HF+ Discovery seems to be pretty good, I got it with their YouLoop antenna and that's working well for me right now.

For software, Airspy has their own favored Windows program which looks good, for Linux gqrx is a very good layer over raw Gnu Radio. Linrad appears to be good if you want to get into serious details, it's developed by a guy who's into bouncing radio signals off the moon and back, which is a bit challenging.

With the concerns about the Internet getting gimped, maybe get a recent copy of the ARRL handbook, and/or their antenna handbook. There's lots of good printed on paper information out there, and for the above SDR programs, of course download them as soon as you get your hardware, including their documentation.

@66 "I would advise to make sure to visit your mom as much as you can whenever she's there or, God forbid, hospice."

Being there as much as you can also, and almost equally important, puts the staff on notice that you ARE watching... When my mom was in hospice, I went every night to feed her dinner and put her to bed, so I got to watch and know the staff; and they, me. So, I was less worried about maltreatment or lesser help. She was demented, and died of cancer: because I was there every evening, from me the staff came to know who she had been a bit more than just "the old nutter in room 26."

Harsh words to consider; but better to know than leave a loved one alone -- as so many of the nice old folks were in that home... Most of the staff was kind and caring; but not all, and it's NOT family. Family for as long as your loved one recognizes family, then you must become "that nice younger person who visits me often" -- if they can even remember you from visit to visit. Wanting them to remember you, as they slip farther away, is about YOU not about them.

Sorry, not germane to today's request for prayers -- but most folks don't know this, and many will be called upon to go through it! So much dementia in the world now... Alas.

Blogger ZaijiaN January 09, 2021 10:45 AM

Snidely, what about setting up our own DNS servers?

That way we can get a clean copy of today's unpoisoned DNS records and maintain comms when the world's DNS gets corrupted. There's got to be some containerized DNS server out there that can be easily spun up and configured to do that. I recently started using pi.hole locally, but that's more for nuisance-blocking than resiliency.

Blogger Ominous Cowherd January 09, 2021 10:46 AM

Lee wrote:Done. Haven't played with the host file before, but pretty simple when you open it up in a text editor.
It's all pretty self explanatory, once you get the hosts file open. The # keeps the computer from using anything after it on a line, so anything you want to be stored there but inactive can have a # in front of it, like so:

#104.16.121.96 gab.com
#85.195.95.72 infogalactic.com

Later on, take the #s off the front and your computer will bypass the poisoned dns and resolve those sites ... unless they have switched to a different IP in the mean time. That's why having the line

205.251.111.249 emergency.voxday #no pound sign at the front!

in your hosts file is important: Vox's crew will be able to give us some useful and current IPs when the DNS records are poisoned.

Blogger Avalanche January 09, 2021 10:47 AM

@128 "Activated NORAD" doesn't mean anything. They are watching 24/7/365.

Always watching yes. Would/could 'activating' have anything to do with scrambling fighters?

A planefag had a really good vid yesterday showing mil assets in the air over the U.S. -- and he was remarking at how VERY many tankers were up. Which, he says, means many FIGHTERS were up, because they are the only 'un-rep' (sorry, I'm Navy, don't know the AF term) capable mil planes. Fighters do NOT IFF on this govt website...

He also outlined the unusual number of planes over the TX / isolated secondary command base that other rumors said TGE had likely flown to from DC: "NightWind"? "Night-something"? -- the backup copy of AF-1 but with way more C&C capability -- lifted from DC and flew TO this TX base (planefag showed the route). Obviously, he said, we don't know if Trump was onboard, but ... there's the flight path.

Other later rumor says Trump, or at least Nightwind, flew TO NORAD.

Having difficulty bringing up Gab

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling January 09, 2021 10:55 AM

OK, I'd forgotten the the WRTH handbook maintains a single page table of receivers, graded on selectivity (where good SDRs have a tremendous advantage) dynamic range, and overall value. Unless you're willing to pay 4-5 figures, the $45 TECHSUN PL-380 is still where it's at, but their PL-310ET is close, one star less to "Fair" for dynamic range.

For HF SDRs the same story, Airspy HF+ Discovery at $170 rules with five start scores that cannot be beaten in this simple table by even 5 figure sets some of which could well be better and probably some not.

There are a couple more SDRs for HF that cost a little more with less stars, but here we're getting iffy because so little shortwave is directed at the US anymore because of the Internet, but that would of course change if it's turned off or effectively so for samizdata. None have its sensitivity, but at four stars there's the FunCube Dongle Pro+ at $190 with three stars for dynamic range, and the SDRPlay RSPdx at $200.

Before dropping 3 figures on a HF SDR, unless you're really up on everything relevant from radios to antennas to computer systems administration, if you think you have time I highly recommend only spending ~$35 for a RTL-SDR as linked above or the like to make sure they're right for you vs. a standalone set. There's a *lot* of them due to a repurposed Realtek chip for outside the US digital TV. Which per this is now being continued in production with the Rafael Micro R860 (chips and other components going out of production is a perennial problem with hardware, manufacturing it is very much not trivial).

@94 Atticus:

What makes you think they wouldn't disrupt routing? If Google started advertising arbitrary routes on BGP, they could easily blackhole targeted addresses.

Expanding on Markku's comment, playing BGP blackhole games could be so disruptive, not to mention so political and abusive of a system based on trust the rest of the world might just stop peering with Google, even blackhole it in retaliation. That's at a "shut down the Internet" level of active measures, and if not done carefully, could end up indirectly killing quite a few people since we are now so dependent on the Internet (if you've opted for paperless billing with anyone, switch back now, this very day, to getting paper bills as a backup if you get knocked off the net).

@107 ZaijiaN: Cloudflare is converged, although they front so much of the Internet that's a general problem for everyone if they get more evil. In general, now, this very minute as you're reading these comments, is the right time to download all these alternative DNS server options, and to learn how to change your particular system to another, or from its automatic DHCP method if needed. Just keep a backup copy of numbers or files as advised in VD's posting, in fact, it's best to keep a written log of everything you do so you can back out or repeat it if needed.

It would be interesting if the US attempts to replicate the Great Firewall of China, would say a whole lot to everyone else in the world. Not a good move if 4GW ROEs are relevant, but our ruling trash clearly wants to dispense with them to punish the deplorables for giving them four years of Trump and counting. It will be hard to do that and keep their influence over the rest of the world.

I just learned about this tonight and I was going to try to download the link but am concerned about viruses. Is this what we need if the internet does get shut down? Then after this “darkness” what happens? How do I download it for an iPhone? Is the link the same for either apple or windows or iPhone? Is it trustworthy? Again I apologize.

Blogger Cedric January 10, 2021 12:04 AM

@kmscharlie This should have nothing to do with viruses.

On your mac, you should be able to edit the /etc/hosts file and add that line. All this does is add a local entry to resolve the name emergency.voxday to a numeric address. This lookup is done whenever you visit any address, like google.com, but there is a server that finds what numeric address to go to.

This resolving server is what they'd likely take down. By having a local copy, you don't need to worry about that server that resolves website addresses. So by adding the entry as instructed, all it means is that if these servers go down, emergency.voxday will work regardless.
