You are part of the problem

Larry Correia admits, on Facebook, that he is part of the problem:

Most of us who stay here do it because this is where we built an audience/community before the bait and switch. We feel stuck, and thus, we are part of the problem. I personally, am part of the problem. I stay here making content they profit off of, because this is where I’ve got the audience. I’ve been trying to move my audience elsewhere… only to discover that the company that runs my blog server and the company that processes my mailing list are willing to engage in the exact same behavior.

The Monster Hunter is right. And the only solution is to bite the bullet and take decisive action. Reject Satan in ALL his pomps. There is no better time to rip off the bandage. Because it's not going to get any easier as time goes on.

We have all been part of the problem. That's exactly why I left Mailchimp last week.

He has options, as does Sarah Hoyt. And any other author.

Blogger Solon January 12, 2021 2:11 PM

I dont use Facebook except to keep in touch with close friends and family.

I need to get the phone numbers of anyone I actually care about on that site, then rip the bandaid off and walk away.

I've already gotten rid of cable TV and Netflix. I dont use any other streaming or social media sites. This would be the last step.

I too am part of the problem. God forgive me.

This is PRECISELY why you are part of the problem. Be a leader. Don't use Facebook AT ALL, and don't be afraid to tell your close friends and family why.

Stop rationalizing why you are in bed with evil.

With the success you have had with, SocialGalactic, Arkhaven etc do you foresee being able to offer hosting services to other creators? Obviously you have a lot going on, but once you have things working fairly smoothly, all that technical expertise could be profitable? Then you become the next Zuckerberg/Google except based on traditional values & logos

I am on whatsapp and have a gmail address that I use to be on here. And I still go on youtube every now and then. For a guy my age, at uni., I am almost a hermit, as people usually wanna stay in touch via social media. I simply exchange phone numbers. Hasn't hurt, ever, so far.

I have hosted my website (y'know, one of those things from the stone age) for years on a free server based in Italy, of all places. Hopefully they are still okay. If not, it's all backed up on my hard drive, able to move as needed.
Facebook is certainly an interesting place (to use the old Chinese aphorism of "interesting times")-- lefties of my acquaintance posting openly about putting "right wingers" and "Trump supporters" into camps.
Nope, no hate speech there.
It's time to believe them when they state things like this, and stop being a visible target, before I and others end up having to wear the colored star.

Blogger Hope@ZeroKelvin January 12, 2021 2:44 PM

I have friends that say, "How do we fight back against Big Tech/Big Corporations?"

I say - get off Twitter, Facebook, cut the cable/Netflix/HBO/Disney.

They say "But how will I stay in touch with friends? What will I watch?"

I say - use your local stores - with cash or a prepaid loaded cash card. Don't use Amazon or any big box stores. Stop using a credit card that gives a % of each purchase to the big banks.

They say - but it is so great when it comes to the door! Free shipping!! I saved $1.50 if I buy it at Walmart!!! I get frequent flyer miles on my credit card!!!!

You see the problem.

Big Tech/Big Corp has seduced most of America into financing the tools of its own enslavement.

I am part of the problem by continuing to use Mozilla Thunderbird, the mail client. I intend to remedy this by identifying a suitable alternative or possibly just using the Windows 10 built in mail client instead. The only sticking point is redoing the multitude of e-mail filters I've set up in Thunderbird.

I've never had a Facebook account and don't intend to ever get one.

I despise the "friends and family" excuse for being on Facebook.

Get off Facebook and you'll soon find out 95% of those 'friends' can't be bothered to lift a finger to email you or write a letter, so they're not your friends.

And family? Again, anyone who cares about having a real relationship with you will write an email, send a letter, or make time for a phone call.

Facebook is fake and ghey, and so are 90% of your 'relationships' with your Facebook 'friends'. They're acquaintances AT BEST.

What is going on now with the purge by the Tech giants reminds me of the purge of the French Huguenots from Catholic France in the late 1500s into the 1600s. The Huguenots were comprised of many of the upper middle classes (tradesman, engineers, etc.)--the people that made the society work. When they left, this left a hole in French society--the distance between the upper and lower classes became even greater. Some have suggested that this added stress contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution.

France's loss was a gain to many other countries--UK and the US being examples. For instance, Davy Crockett, Howard Hughes, Paul Revere, Francis Marion, and Henry Laurens were all of Huguenot descent.

Blogger inglorious January 12, 2021 3:04 PM

I would bet that 90% of the people using FB and Twitter etc. would experience no ill effect at all if they left those platforms. Some businesses that use those platforms to drive traffic and sales would. But if the non-business people left then so would the businesses eventually. I read once that every person using those platforms is worth something like $8 - $12 per month to them in advertising revenue. That was a few years ago. So they need you more than you need them. I killed my FB and Twitter account over 5 years ago and never had an ounce of regret in doing so. My wife refused to give hers up. But after this last fiasco with President Trump she said enough is enough and she killed her FB account as well. She never had a Twitter. My daughter decided to never get a FB account and my son recently killed his as well. So we are officially a FB / Twitter free family. At least the immediate family. And it feels damn good.

There is a lot of tech out there, so maybe I won't get it right the first time, but thinking about and working on it (slowly).

Scott refers to it as the "network problem" - once people build a social media presence and get all their friends there and any "following" they are very reluctant to start over somewhere all of those people are not. I found myself still on Facebook up to about a week after the election just to keep in touch with my chicken groups ... dumb but thankfully I was one of the first purges of since the election on that platform and was summarily removed 'without the possibility of appeal" after 20+ years sometime around Nov 15th. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I have invested my time back into my personal web site which has been online since the mid-90s and everything I have built myself from scratch on a host no one has ever heard of that costs me $30/yr and making a snazzy new web site for my horse trainer and our show team which is way more fun and fulfilling than posting on Facebook anyhow. I do maintain my social media presence as "Mina Smith" because it costs me little, I mostly use it to get information not share any and it's not attached to my real life. Hey Vox I have sent you messages in the past but I am available for database work if any of your sites need it. MySQL, SQL Server, etc I am more of an infrastucture, high availability (DR, failover, etc) type. Let me know as I have a lot more free time these days.

Better said would be that WE are all part of the problem. After all Blogspot, system which hosts this blog is itself google property and only allows commenting with google accounts... Several years ago (I think it was after some other blogger was banned) I suggested that it would be better/safer for VD to switch to self-hosted Wordpress or something, but back then people still naively though that Google tries to adhere to its "Don't be evil" motto. Well know everyone sees Google's true face and because of how much VD grew this blog since then switching to alternative is even harder. Also hosting is much easier now with spread of static site generators, CDN and separate commenting systems. Even though VD get lots of traffic, if the blog was statically generated, it could be hosted both fast and cheap.

I would probably suggest VD to start parallel blog with same content, first try to route people to new place only by simple link, then publish here just perex and link people away, then just title and link away and finally shut down this place.

Back when I was still using Facebook, I went to the trouble to hide my birthday. They don't make it easy, but you can dig down into the settings somewhere and do it. On my next birthday, instead of birthday wishes from dozens of people, I got zero there.

It really is anti-social media. It's fake friendship, with automated reminders to tell people to click a button to act friendly to each other. If you have real friends who are connected to you on there, they'll still be your friends in real life. The rest aren't. It's entirely fake and unhealthy.

Blogger Anthony C January 12, 2021 3:50 PM

IT really bothers me to hear from Content Providers complain about being deplatformed by the Tech Giants. This was always going to happen. The stupidity is these content providers never thought to create their own websites, their own way to process payments and to control their intellectual property through concrete safeguards. Claiming now they are responsible for what's happening to them doesnt absolve them of the punishment they are feeling now. I believe admitting fault is a back door manipulation way of gaining sympathy with their followers. I never understood the epic stupidity of a content provider not establishing their own island of intellectual property content that was somewhat bulletproof of the Big Tech Oligarchs.

I am a small business, with my own server platform. I do Web and email hosting. It ain't easy, and costs me way more than the profit received.
What hurts are the "free" alternatives like Wix and Squarespace that suck up the small business accounts that used to be and still are the bread and butter of my business.
I'm not complaining, just illustrating That the issue really is "addiction" to free stuff. That is the problem.
Who can you really blame when it costs hundreds or thousands of dollars and a monthly subscription to create a site on a non-free platform that you can do pretty much on your own on Facebook, Wix or Squarespace for "free"?

People who didn't home school their kids are part of the problem.

" wife and I both have to work to make ends meet!"
See house: Suburban overpriced typical with high property taxes because "good schools".
See driveway: at least one expensive SUV and the typical overpriced sedan or fully loaded minivan.
See living room: super sized TV leather sofa. Oh they have cable. Oh they have Netflix.
See wall: family trip to Disney.

Yeah I'd say they just about deserve their daughters coming back from college...oh yeah they send their kids there too.... With purple hair and a girlfriend and their sons coming back as daughters.

And then their solution is to watch FOX news and think somehow they will be given a reprieve from this.

The world ended not with a bang nor a whimper. Nobody noticed they were too busy being brainless.

I ditched Farcebook maybe a couple of months ago, after first running a script to delete everything I'd posted over the previous 11 years. Lately, I've started seeing friends (actual IRL people I know, not Farcebook's idea of "friend") start popping up on MeWe...two of 'em so far this week.

I never had a Twatter account (only ever followed the odd link or two there), so there was nothing there for me to burninate on the way out.

Mail for the past two decades has been self-hosted, first on a home server, then on a series of VPSes. (The "cloud" risk is mitigated with daily backups, and in any case, virtual private servers have been around since long before "cloud" became a thing.) I've had a Gmail address since it was in beta way back when, but it's never been my primary email address. It's handy for when I need to test mail flow between servers or when I need to hand an email address to someone who's likely to send spam, but that's about it.

The mail server also has a few self-hosted WordPress instances. "Self-hosted" means "not on" Akismet and Jetpack are vulnerable to being interfered with, but if they were to be yanked out from under my websites, a few minor adjustments would compensate for that. They wouldn't be able to shut my sites down, unlike (for instance) Conservative Treehouse or Chateau Heartiste.

One of the aforementioned websites has an email list that sends out event reminders. That list is self-hosted, running on a handful of Python scripts I wrote.

Something to consider. It would be better to live in a homogeneous moral and religious nation with the proportionate GDP of Albania (1/7th ours) than in a rich clown world.

When people on the Right get that idea integrated and stop the reflexive cucking for cash they all do, it will make a huge difference in our lives.

Until than drop all social media, stop using hostile platforms and services , don't buy what you don't need, stop buying from hostiles when you can . Also even if it costs more by from friendlies and cancel your cable/subscription services.

Unauthorized yes, others recommended by our host, yes. Otherwise. No.

If you really must have something mainstream to watch, try baby steps get only History channel and maybe Discovery and even that isn't really great.

Screen out the degeneracy. Its good for your soul.

Try reading old books, painting, sculpting, writing, play music, play D&D on line or FTF if you can. That won't give you a win but at least it won't help people who are diametrically opposed to you.
