Acquitted. Again.

Despite the best efforts of his lawyers to throw the trial, President Donald Trump was acquitted by the U.S. Senate today.

The second impeachment trial of President Donald Trump fizzled to a predictable close on Saturday as senators voted largely along party lines to acquit the U.S. president of the charge against him, ending a historic chapter in American political history.

Trump was acquitted on the charge—”incitement of insurrection”—by a vote of 57-43, failing to achieve the necessary threshold of 67 votes.

That's good news. Now restore the office already, please....

I'm guessing yes. I'm guessing those troops never leave Washington.

Well, that's good, but unfortunately now we get to watch the conservatards start yapping on about how they "scared" the GOP into behaving. They'll totally forget about the traitorous behavior shortly afterwards, returning to their pre-2016 mindset. Hopefully some will retain the new uniparty knowledge they received, but I wouldn't bet on it.

"Senators Susan Collins, Mitt Romney, Lisa Murkowski, Ben Sasse, Patrick Toomey, Bill Cassidy and Richard Burr joined all of their Democratic colleagues to vote for a conviction."

Toomey is leaving on his own. I never trusted that sleazy Wall Street bastard, and less so after he tried pushing gun control with Manchin.

Unfortunately, I assume the others will survive their next election, because, they are unprincipled corporate whores.

The sure do put the "senile" in Senator.

Despite being happy that Trump was acquitted yet again... I can't help but think that the Republicans, once again, missed a great opportunity to fight back by bringing witnesses and exposing the entire corrupt establishment.
Of course, based on McConnell's post-acquittal speech, it makes sense, since they wouldn't want to expose themselves.

There were 57 senators that voted to convict a overwhelming popular president on charges that the Supreme Court would toss on first Amendment grounds if it were a criminal case. These people really are stupid.

But as I recall, the last time impeachment failed, a week later they came up with this covid BS. Before they hyped covid, Pelosi and company were making videos that covid was not something to fear and that bringing it up was racist against Chinese.

So who knows what fuckery they'll come up with now. I notice they are playing "the school shooting song" a lot on the radio these days. That would be "Creep" by Radiohead. Every time I start hearing that on the radio, there's an incident.

But in the end it's good when they lose because they get even worse. That's the whole idea of Trump for a lot of people, the chaos president. Everything was nice and peaceful when globohomo was fully in control.

So for now I shall drink and be merry, but also be vigilant and ready to fight in the shade. The ride is never going to end. Thank God.

On a more serious note, did you notice how the Dems suddenly backtracked on witnesses when the Rs threatened to call hundreds of them? Maybe, just maybe, there's an embryonic spine growing in all those GOPers. Wishful thinking, probably though.

Now that Trump is no longer under impeachment, the lamestream is going to be hard pressed to find something favorable to prop Biden up, since even in the calendar he receives daily briefings and has Circle Back keep on circling back, and that's it. It's elder abuse what they're doing to him though he does deserve it.

Blogger Pathfinderlight February 13, 2021 6:19 PM

To be fair, impeachment is an entirely political process. Due to all the coverage of the issue, I'm sure all the politicians know what their constituents will do to them if they falsely convict the president.

The differences in votes show the differences in who the politicians view as their constituents.

I will keep my eye on the cases working their way thru the USSC. That would be a hoot if the august body, ultimately, judged that not only was Trump the winner but the down ballot totals were reviewed and handed the R's both the house and the senate. I can hear the anguished cries and the lamentations of the women even now.
As the late, great Jackie Gleason used to remark, 'How sweet it is.'

Blogger Opus February 13, 2021 6:34 PM

People are always justifying their views by a call to freedom of speech. In America there is an amendment to the Constitution the first such which guarantees it.

A big fan of freedom of Speech was John Stuart Mill (of whom I am not exactly the warmest supporter) and he wondered what the limit of free speech might be. This was his proposed limit which has often come into my mind since the commencement of proceedings for impeachment of your rightful President. Mill at a time when for some reason Corn-growers were extremely unpopular took the view that the unacceptable limit would be to rile up a crowd outside the home of a corn-grower. I would say that given the stolen election that Mr Trump would have fallen foul of Mill's stricture.

I would also say as an observer from a distant island that the present mania - twice in the last year - to impeach your President is more what one expects from some post-colonial British Colony in Africa or the Caribbean. Not what one expects from the U.S.A. (shakin' our collective heads)- but then I recall the U.S.A. is also though partly a series of former post-colonial British Colonies just off the Caribbean.

This looks to have been a benefit gig for the Republican party. A chance for them to say, 'Well, we didn't back your man in a contested election when it really, really mattered. But we backed him in a sham trial when it made no difference. Vote Republican 2024!'

Blogger Balkan Yankee February 13, 2021 6:59 PM

Of the seven in question:

- Murkowski is the only one up for reelection in 2022. (Paging Sarah Palin! Paging Sarah Palin!)
- Burr and Toomey are retiring at the end of their terms in 2022.
- Cassidy and Sasse have been censured by county/local GOP parties.

That leaves Collins, who wants to censure Trump, and Romney, who is facing possible censure from Utah Republicans.

Yes, He did a great job, but possibly these guys are playing a role? Probably not Castor, as he comes off as a legit Idiot. The 11.5 minute summary of Van Der Veen's arguments was excellent.

I get frankly tired of the "We got to do everything so that even the enemies know we are Constitutional." Take over the MSM and end it, I say. Or just shut them down and broadcast the Truth for several months. The DS control over communications has some people chicken. SCOTUS will not likely come through, and Feb. 19th means nothing. Those who are going to Know, already Know.

Might get a few more percent of even leftists to hate DEMS, but will that complete anything? The search for the perfect loses momentum.

Someone chickened out, not Trump, but someone who was needed. It had to be a group, probably military, worried about "optics" or how they'll look in the "future," if they do not dot every stupid i, and cross every dumb t to appear "Constitutional."

Just saying... with frustration.

Trump needs to go take this issue to SCOTUS - that the Senate voted to declare the trial of a citizen Constitutional usurped the third branch's role in the process, that the Senate trial damaged the Constitutional framework.
I think the SCOTUS will take a case where the institution itself is challenged - the SCOTUS claims the "final" word on the Constitution.

Blogger Patrick McNally February 13, 2021 9:19 PM

This is now the time to watch and see if he does anything more. It would have been unreasonable for anyone to demand of Trump that he shoot his mouth off in public while the impeachment was ongoing. Even now with it over Trump is still within his rights to take a vacation from politics for awhile. But if he wants to see himself as a leader in the future he needs to start preparing some action. Whether that means announcing a candidacy for 2024 or something else is his call. But if he lets things drift for too long then his moment will gradually pass away.

Blogger ErictheRed February 13, 2021 9:22 PM

I do not think SCOTUS would take up the case. Since Trump was acquitted, they would view it as essentially no harm, no foul. Appellate courts rarely take a petition brought by the defendant after they are found not guilty. In fact, I cannot think of any situation where it has ever happened, and I have practiced over ten years. They would probably say there is “no case or controversy” and rationalize that any deficiency during the trial was “cured” when Trump was acquitted.

This is not good for the country. A lot of extremely good national guard units are in D.C. usually the best battalion from each state. Now they are going to be sitting around, doing work below that of traffic control cops, while what are considered "perishable skills" deteriorate.

Every Republican congressman who ran for re-election won. That's improbable enough that Trump mentioned it several times, almost as if he wanted THAT look into as well. I think it's obvious now that BOTH parties were involved in the steal, and Trump knows it. The only way forward now is ban one party and replace the other. Don't care which happens to either.

They stole a US election with fake and flipped ballots - both paper and electronic. There’s no doubt that Biden is a fake president being purported with his Alzheimer’s.
If Trump somehow is reinstalled for winning the 2020 Election, I will stand behind him all the way.

@97. It's not really that out there if you understand Mossad, which Gab is controlled by. Mossad just wants to control sites used by their opposition, which would be gentiles and Christians. This particular method of control is actually much more clever and subtle than what lots of other Satanically inverted SJW groups are doing.

America: we're so dominant in the world power structure that we saw banana republic goings-on and said "hold my beer."

We are the banana-est of republics. We have a history of acting like we have the biggest dick in the room and we cant give up that reputation even in imploding, gotta one-up the 3rd-worlders one last time.

McConnell votes to acquit Trump in impeachment. Then says:

"There's no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. No question about it. The people that stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president."

Burr and Cassidy both voted that the impeachment was unconstitutional, and then voted guilty in said impeachment.

How's that for some epic stupidity.

@70 "announcing a candidacy for 2024"

"We" -- the United States -- WILL. NOT. LAST. until 2024! People, especially "Republicans" and "Conservatives" need to quit believing this can be 'settled' legally, Constitutionally, by VOTING for the next guy!

Biden's handlers are already -- and rapidly! -- DESTROYING this country in the first three weeks the enemies running him are:
Taking guns
flinging open borders while destroying many thousands of pipeline jobs
ratcheting up COVID stupidity and handing out unsafe gene therapy
re-commencinging the same-old-same-old foreign wars
insane taxing and giving money to everyone who did not earn it (stimulus to illegals?!? WTH!)
And, oh yeah, handing the ENTIRE COUNTRY over to the Communist Chinese!!

EVERYTHING that was barely tolerable before has been made INtolerable! Everything we nice folks couldn't even IMAGINE could be going on CONTINUES!

Remember "You'd be in jail"?

Blogger GeronL February 14, 2021 7:52 AM

It never seems to occur to sheeple that if there was real evidence Trump was actually guilty of what they allege he would be in a real court facing a real prison but there is not. Instead we get political theatrics.

Blogger Avalanche February 14, 2021 7:54 AM

@74 "The only thing worse for them than being taken seriously is being exposed as impotent."

Yeah, tell that to the 11,000 pipeline ex-workers, and coming soon, the 60,000-or-so follow-on support no-longer-workers...

@80 "This is not good for the country. A lot of extremely good national guard units are in D.C. usually the best battalion from each state."

Every one of use should get after your state's "powers" and demand any Nat Guard sent to D.C. be recalled! There is NO reason for the state's forces to be (literally: they're back in the garages with no toilet facilities!) cooling their heels guarding the govt criminals and @holes from The People!

After the first Senate vote (i.e. the one deciding CONSTITUTIONALITY of holding the trial for an already departed POTUS), we all knew how this would go. Trump was NEVER going to be convicted! The first vote was 56-44, while yesterday's vote for acquittal was 57-43. One more RINO revealed himself-one more a-hole to primary...

Blogger ErictheRed February 14, 2021 9:57 AM

Again, they still won’t take the case because Trump was acquitted. Trump would be the only one who would have legal standing. Since he suffered no legal “injury,” they would decline the case. The only way they would take the case is if he were convicted. Then they could address your issue.

The issue you raise is legitimate, but there are procedural barriers to it that cannot be overcome.

Blogger liberranter February 14, 2021 10:15 AM

Despite the best efforts of his lawyers to throw the trial...

If you're not even capable of putting on a defense so bad and so weak that it gets your client convicted, then you're an even more incompetent attorney than anyone has accused you of being.

Let's see what kind of clients Castor is able to attract now...

The fact that the Democrat's used a fake Twitter during the impeachment as a primary piece of evidence.
Then were allowed to continue unhindered by the Republicans.
Clown politics.

Those are some good points and pointed questions. In the big picture though, this could also backfire on the deep state and/or elites. We know that some of those Trump policies like keeping the asylum seekers in Mexico worked along with invigorating the energy industry and others, so their are going to be lot of pissed off people possibly willing to fight if they feel there is nothing more to lose.

Trump did us a lot of good. I agree with Vox that Trump was the greatest president after Jackson. He could have been greater than George Washington, but he balked at the hurdle.

Blogger Vanished friend February 18, 2021 5:21 AM

Giuliani knows what really happened to WTC7. Lin Wood represents the Ramsey family. Pompeo and Kushner attended Bilderberg. Dershowitz is accused of being a rapist at Epstein's island. And lastly, Trump himself was mighty tight with Epstein. And then there's the way Trump DIDN'T fire a slew of other traitors, not least of which, Fauci and Birx, who perpetuated the totalitarian covid hoax, on Trump's watch. I'm not going to suggest a blackpill conclusion, but the pieces are adding up to...well, you do the math, I suck at math. But it feels like...
