Big Tech vs nations

Facebook has gone to war with Australia because it doesn't want to pay for the content it steals:

Facebook has blocked Australians from accessing and sharing news in protest at a new law which would have forced the site to pay for the content it hosts.

Furious Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the move shows tech companies 'think they are bigger than governments and that the rules should not apply to them' while others branded it 'an assault on a sovereign nation' and an 'abuse of power'.

The backlash quickly went international, with one Democrat politician in the US saying it shows 'Facebook is not compatible with democracy' while the hashtag 'Delete Facebook' quickly began trending on rival site Twitter.

Australians searching Facebook for news today were instead shown notifications saying 'no posts' were available. Attempting to share news links brought up a message saying 'this post can't be shared'.

But the shock move also stopped some government messages being shared, including from emergency services providing essential information on Covid, fires, and help for victims of domestic violence.

What part of "get off Facebook" do you not understand? It is literally a hostile globalist power that quite literally regards itself above every law. Whatever benefit you think you're getting from it isn't worth it.

There is literally nothing negative about facebook intentionally making itself less relevant. Please, keep going.

Not a fan of facebook, but why should they have to pay for links to content? The links are actually driving traffic. Or am I missing something?

Blogger Honkler the Emotional Wreck February 18, 2021 8:12 AM

Facebook should be shut down by governments directly, but I also agree that most people should not be worried about or constantly confronted by the news. They cannot control their intake like a drug. "News" is the primary means of propagandizing the public who would do better to focus on their family and yard work.

Ban American cultural exports while we are at it. If we stopped exporting movies and television today, most of latin America would forget we existed in 20 years and people would stop coming here. Would love to never hear about a Hollywood movie in my Northern state as well.

Facebook is bad, but is it worse than the Australian government, or the US government? I am leaning toward siding with Facebook in a "war." King Zuck might be an improvement.

Of course FB should be held to the same IP laws as everyone else. Not that I believe in IP, but there's no benefit to letting Big Tech skate by while everyone else gets DMCA strikes.

Now working on doing the same thing (as much as possible) with Google, Microsoft and Apple.

Dangerous move there, Zuck. And what if after a few days of not having Facebook the Australians decided they neither need nor want Facebook?

Much like the idiocy of picking a fight with Apple, I'm pretty sure that Australians are (still) more loyal to Australia than they are to a Silicon Valley Tech Company / CIA front.

Blogger Jab Burrwalky February 18, 2021 9:12 AM

There is quite possibly no greater sign of the devolved ineptitude of modern liberal governments than their admissions that they rely, without apparent backup plans, on a foreign, unregulated, private corporation for "essential government services."

It's time to start criminalizing what FB, Google, Twitter et al. are doing, and arresting their executives...Or taxing them as they did the telephone companies...

This is obvious to anyone in the Internet business. Tech types have always seen the Internet as a separate jurisdiction above petty nations with their borders and taxes and regulations. That was mostly a positive thing in the early years, when it was run and inhabited by cooperative volunteers. The lack of any real "government" online allowed for an incredible amount of innovation and the free exchange of information. But now that it's occupied by corporations which do have the ability to regulate it, they've set themselves up as its government, writing and enforcing the "law" online for their own purposes, which are not benign.

Got some relatives there. I don't hear from them, or any of my extended family, because I'm not on facebag. That's modern families - they can't talk to each other anymore without this crap. There's births, deaths, marriages, all kinds of stuff I'll never know about. Hilarious.

They've carved out a nice niche for themselves - they've made people feel guilty about not including zuckerborg totally normal human, in every family news event.

I think we're going to have to leave significant sections of family behind as society _progresses_ past social media as prime organizing fulcrum.

If you are worried about irrecoverable losses when you delete your account, you don't have to be.

There's an export feature in there where you can export your entire facebook existence into a zip file and archive it.

Then delete your account permanently and nuke it from orbit. None of this deactivation foolishness.

Blogger NativeAsianBear February 18, 2021 10:34 AM

Exactly! At this point the entire continent just needs to drop fb. Alas they will keep complaining about the corruption using the same platform. No wonder they are still locked down and in masks.

Blogger Ferdl February 18, 2021 10:45 AM

Would be interesting to see if Australians do react to this show of force by facebook. In the US the fact that big tech has interfered massively with the elections has not changed much about the habits of the electorate. If the numbers of similarweb are reliable then we have to conclude that only facebook seems to be losing some of its traffic. Youtube and twitter apparently continue to do rather well.

Blogger rcocean February 18, 2021 10:56 AM

Austrailia shouldn't take this lying down. Just ban Facebook. Start an Austrailian owned "facebook". what is so complicated about what facebook does? From what i can tell, its not. Zuckerprick just got their firstest with the mostest.

Blogger Bezzle February 18, 2021 10:58 AM

Attempting to share news links brought up a message saying 'this post can't be shared'.

It would be terrible, horrible, awful if mainstream news organizations couldn't extricate themselves from the lower decks before this ship went down. Doesn't Australia realize how critically important that spammed click-bait is?

Blogger VD February 18, 2021 10:59 AM

Not a fan of facebook, but why should they have to pay for links to content? The links are actually driving traffic. Or am I missing something?

It's not about links. It's about copyright violations. If the links were driving traffic, this wouldn't be an issue. But they're not. Facebook is getting all the ad revenue by putting someone else's content on their own site.

What you're missing is the words "the content it hosts". The only reference to links is Facebook actively blocking links to off-site content.

Blogger Unknown February 18, 2021 10:59 AM

The government bans it, then the government is angry because it won't carry some of its messages? Can't have it both ways. Ban it. I always go back to what we did before all this idiot digital trash came along. Do that.

@28. rcocean February 18, 2021 10:56 AM
what is so complicated about what facebook does? From what i can tell, its not.

If you think so, then you don't understand what Facebook *is*. The observable outer-shell (of a social-media platform) is a loss-leader. It, like Google, loses great heaping gobs of money maintaining that (this being the primary reason it's been so difficult for the market to churn them over e.g. AOL or MySpace as it would have in earlier decades). What they are, is connected monopoly *intelligence agencies* now. Their users were the product being bought and sold.

As for what the mask-crazy & down with Great Reset globalism Australian government is really up to, that remains to be seen. But this....

"...The backlash quickly went international, with one Democrat politician in the US saying it shows 'Facebook is not compatible with democracy' while the hashtag 'Delete Facebook' quickly began trending on rival site Twitter...."

...provides clues.

The question you might ask yourself is, "Why is the Cabal turning on Facebook all of a sudden? Have they lost control of it?"

In fairness, this is quite funny. The same people who delighted in the censorship of God Emperor have themselves been silenced. They got what they f*cking deserved, some might argue. Quite why our government is hell-bent on this bill I'm not sure, presumably Murdoch is involved. This is quite the hall-mark of current Western Democracy, where laws are introduced, and nobody really knows why. And now we have the rather amusing scenario where our ... cosmopolitan Finance Minister is having discussions with the equally cosmopolitan Emperor Palpazuck about who gets what in the propaganda industry. Splendid. Big Bear Rubbing Hands Voice.

Blogger Hammerli 280 February 18, 2021 6:12 PM

"But the shock move also stopped some government messages being shared, including from emergency services providing essential information on Covid, fires, and help for victims of domestic violence."

The Australians would be entirely justified in classifying Zuck as a terrorist for this. Then send their SAS in to give him a Bin Laden Lobotomy.

Blogger James Fox Higgins February 18, 2021 6:40 PM

I voluntarily nuked my original account in 2019, then at the behest of family rejoined with a clean sock account in early 2020 to keep in touch which those who can't seem to remember that we did fine keeping in touch by email or phone calls only a decade ago, or better yet, we just didn't pretend we cared about each others' lives like people so disingenuously do today. Then FB nuked that account and permanently banned me because of my personal history of public wrongthink. I was happy FB made it easy for me to be completely done with them. Sometimes not being welcome is the best thing for us.

Now I listen to the Orwellian creep start to affect "normies" in my life, and I can't help but feel good about the unwelcomeness spreading. Mankind seems to be speciating right now, and as we K-selected folks learn to stop pretending the r's can co-exist with us, we get stronger and happier.

My popcorn is ready, as I watch Zuckerberg destroy his own power base. Might buy a few copies of Corporate Cancer to hand to the smarter normies in my life, to help them understand why this is happening.

Blogger My Comment February 18, 2021 7:27 PM

There is nothing Facebook can do so they will drive away most people on our side of the divide. Unlike the SJW, our side is comprised of happy people who want to enjoy their lives.

When I mention that I am not on Facebook and won't ever be back on it, they are shocked. They say they have had their accounts for a long time and Facebook is an easy way to keep in contrast with friends and family. Most also enjoy sharing memes and pictures.

Americans have traditionally have never been all that political. The SJW define themselves by politics. Most of our people don't. I saw that as a kid with the Vietnam War raging and it dominating the headlines. I was anti war but it was hard to find anyone else in my suburban town who cared much about it one way or the other.
