It is good to hate the Boomer

I don't hate old people. I hate Boomers. I hate literally everything about Boomerdom. There is not one single thing I like about it. I hate their music, I hate their clothes. I hate their stupid hair and their stupid civnattery. I hate their materialism. I hate their horrible 70s fabrics and colors. But most of all, I hate their juvenile and terminally dyscivilizational self-obsession. This is not a recent phenomenon. I have hated everything about them since the late 1970s, when I first began to become aware that things had not always been so ugly and myopic and awful.

These idiots are proud of hating on a targeted group, the old.

This is ageist nonsense. If you like being insulted by children go to Vox to be insulted; you may have invented personal computers, the internet, and gone to the moon. You could be Tim Berners-Lee, It won't matter. Vox is a bigot against anyone who has been around longer than himself. If you don't like it he will ban you.

He must hates his parents so he takes it out any one who is older than himself.

How much do you love that he actually worked the Moon in there. The point is that if you self-identify as a Boomer, if you are offended when younger generations exhibit their contempt for Boomers, then you are accepting culpability for all the many sins of your g-g-generation. I don't hate or despise old people. To the contrary, I have always respected and sought to learn from my elders. I harbor no contempt for pre-Boomers, or with people born between 1946 and 1964 who repudiate Boomerism. It's not when one was born that matters, but rather, one's identity and values.

Boomers don't understand this because they never respected their elders and identified themselves by their long-distant youth. That's why they always say, incorrectly, that our children and grandchildren will despise us the way theirs despise them, and the way they despised their parents and grandparents. But that is not true, because we loved our grandparents, we love our children, and we will love our grandchildren. And we don't merely love them, we prioritize them. We sacrifice for them and we do so gladly.

The best description of the Boomer I have ever heard is this: the Boomer criticizes his grandchildren for failing to plant the acorns of the nonexistent oaks under which he cannot sit.

I have consciously hated Boomers since they were declaring that 40 is the new 20 and I always will. The Day of the Pillow is coming for all of them. And the best thing is that we are literally writing their history, because none of those self-obsessed losers had enough interest in anything outside of their g-g-generation to be able to put it in historical context.

God hates the wicked. That is why it is good to hate the Boomer.

These dumb af spergers. Bob Kahn was born in 1938. Vinton Cerf was born in 1943.

TCP/IP is not Bomer. So the “internet” is not Boomer.

Another reason to hste Boomers: they lie and try to claim credit of their better’s accomplishments.

Has anyone figured out why the boomer booms?

Is the causation of mass self absorption internal, or external, to the boomer?

A Sunday boomer thread! You are making Lent hard for me!

My only quibble is the puke green color. My grandparents were born in the 1910s, and had that in their home. I have many happy memories of grandma baking with that ugly green stove.

But I can walk into a church, and guess if it was built in the boomdom.

Boomers are the farmers that sold the seed corn to remodel the master bathroom. Then mortgaged the farm to buy themselves a beach condo. And now they bitch at their kids for not raising the crops to help them make their condo fees.

The Boomers screwed up the housing market, and for that they deserve criticism.
Especially rough for younger people who can barely afford a decent house in a decent area.

Blogger Stilicho February 28, 2021 8:24 AM

A very amusing aspect of Boomerism is that everyone hates them as a generation because they insisted on defining themselves as members of a generation (exemplified by degenerate personal, political, and economic habits). They are so desperate to belong, to conform to their herd, to gain what they see as value from that group identity. Then are shocked and outraged when others despise them for their group identity.

Boomers will always be the New Coke of generations.

Blogger Star Tipper February 28, 2021 8:25 AM

I was born in the peak Boomer year of 1957 and never liked the front edge of the Boomer cohort with the protests and drugs and senseless rebellion. 1969 for me was Apollo 11 and not Woodstock. Fortunately I followed my parents example and not my cohort and have a happy family life with grandkids. It will be the ultimate irony when Boomers' kids and grandkids burn their Beatles records to start the funeral pyre.

Blogger Doktor Jeep February 28, 2021 8:33 AM

The boomers even look the part. Bloated demons.

Boomers deserve to be lined up, hanged, and then thrown onto a pile of burning Roy Orbison collector edition box sets. They destroyed a civilization and continue to outvote and browbeat any attempt to save it while thinking America is just as fine and dandy as it was in 1969. They had an entire lifetime to do something about Hart Cellar and didn't. Now they deserve to have cops with names like Garcia and Gonzales confiscate their guns. They deserve to have politicians with names like Cortes confiscate their retirement.
And in the nursing homes they will deserve to have orderlies with names like Mugabe and Sankara beating them.
It's what you wanted, boomers. And you are going to get it.

The sheer projection in that comment.
"He must hates his parents so he takes it out any one who is older than himself."
Meanwhile, literally every boomer I've spoken to, even the "good ones", blame the generation before them, simply because that was the generations of their parents that they rebelled against for no justifiable reason.
I don't blame Gen X for a damn thing because what have they done to wreck the world? It doesn't matter that they're older, as a generation they weren't responsible for the mess we're in. Nor were the silents. Age has nothing to do with it. Boomers are the Generation of Satan.

This post made me realize a key advantage generation X has over the Millenials that I never preciously considered; Our parents were obnoxious but our grandparents were awesome, in general . If they didn’t pass on wealth primarily due to their boomer children strip mining them and blowing it on themselves, they certainly passed on some lessons of how to be a good person. Loving and respecting our grandpatents more than our parents is a common characteristic of Gen X.

Millenials and Gen Z on the other hand had boomers for grandparents.

Few things demonstrate Boomer narcissism more than their exasperation with seeing their parents’ love and doting over their grandchildren. The refrains were always the same. ‘They never treated me that good!!’ orYou don’t know what they’re really like.’ Often this masqueraded so well as humor it was hard to see their was genuine resentment that someone would dare love anyone more than them even if that someone was their own offspring.

So your freshly minted boomer was born between 1946 and 1964... So lets take the midpoint of 1955. The (taken with a grain of salt bigger than a boomers ego) "moon landing" supposedly occurred on July 21, 1969. Our midpoint boomer was 14 when this occurred. 14 year olds were not responsible for any moon landings either then or now. Even assuming he was born with the first crop in '46 he'd be 23 at best when the supposed moon landing occurred.

In all of the old footage of mission control still floating around how many 14-23 year olds are present in same? Maybe some are delivering sandwiches or maybe the picture of one on his dads desk wearing his favorite beanie counts as his helping this to happen.

There's narcissism and then there's BOOMER narcissism.

I have noticed that those born in the 5 years after the Boomer era are somewhat Boomer adjacent. There is a division in the '65 to '70 born folk - some went Super-Boomer and some went completely Anti-Boomer. By definition they aren't Boomers but the distribution of their Boomerdom is more of a polarized mixed bag. Part Boomer, part Boomer hater, part regular Gen-X. The last thing I want to do is call this sub-group Boomers because they seemed to be the people who actually killed Boomer hell. The tip of the Gen-X spear maybe? Some of the worst Boomers Ive ever met come from those 5 years but on the flip side the Boomer hell awareness leaders also tend to come from that time.

I consider the 1946-1964 timeline as a rough gauge. My father in law and mother were both born in '43 and are full on boomers. I missed the cut off by 10 months and have done many boomer things in my time that I fully regret.

"you may have invented personal computers, the internet, and gone to the moon. "

The boomer is not up to date on history. The PC and the internet? I'll give boomers credit where credit is due but to claim they "invented" the two is a bit of stretch. The moon? Ok, boomer must have been smoking some high grade ganja when he came up with that one.

I'm with our host on this, I do not hate old people, I hate boomers. My neighbor is a 74 year old Christian woman who I enjoy visiting occasionally. I love listening to this woman rant about feminist and hippies. I got her started on that subject by asking her thoughts on BLM bullshit etc.. and how the 60's were the same with the leftist movements.

If the boomer is reading this, we don't hate you because of your age, we hate you because you completely fucked up our country. Feminism, time outs, perms, bell bottoms, lgbqt, olive green appliance's, Oprah, the 80's yuppies, the southern invasion and your citizens of the world bullshit.

Gump is the ultimate boomer movie and I think Jenny captures the boomer mentality perfectly. She was a hippie protesting the war and then she became a cocaine snorting whore dancing to disco. Her mentality IS boomerism, Woodstock was the greatest event of all time and they, the boomers stopped the war in Nam man. Idiots didn't stop shit, all they did was destroy and teach their kids that debt is good, and if you ever lose all of your money it's not your fault, it's the evil rich people and we should tax them more. And let us not forget, how are we supposed to live on Social Security, it's not enough! Said every boomer.

FYI, Yellow Submarine is still the dumbest song I've ever heard, but I am supposed to believe the Beatles are the greatest band ever because the boomers tell me they are. Get over yourselves already. Thanks, Gen X

Is this largely about the Aging Liberal Hippies?

Because I get along fine with the conservative Boomers that served in Vietnam and didn't avoid the Draft in the 60s.

Also I have noticed Millenials and Post-Millenials don't seem have much respect for Generation-Xers like myself either.

It's strange to consider all the different groups that fell for the shpeel of "embrace this artificial identity group at the expense of your self, family, Church and nation." Boomers, Judeo-christians, SJWs, etc. Decade after decade, the war on God and reality finds new suckers, well-intentioned and rebellious alike, to recruit into their artificial ranks. How do you break the conditioning of an artificialized person?

Nothing worse than a Boomer, except a totally Gamma Boomer (Goober?). Never grew up, just kept trashing the grownups in their age group and everyone else. They got one part of their phrasing right, "don't trust anyone over 35", so now doubly don't trust them.

The problem that I have with your Boomer hate list is that many of the items on it simply aren't Boomer. I agree totally that the 70s was an especially ugly decade, even the cars became increasingly ugly. However, in my recollection, it was the Greatest generation that rejoiced in the polyester light colored clothes, with white plastic belts, and erected the ugly brutal buildings. At age 15 I attended 10th grade in the old downtown high school. Because of the generational bulge, the sophomores had our own building. It had a beautiful, sweeping staircase that swept down from a third floor auditorium to a landing where it doubled back to lower floors. As one descended that top flight, the view was out thru three huge arched windows that overlooked a beautiful gothic style fieldstone church across the street. It lifted my spirit every time I walked down. Of course the Greatest POBs in charge knocked both it, and the firestone church across the street down - in the 70s.

The late 60s building for the junior seniors, on the other hand, was a plain limestone box. Half of the classroom didn't even have windows. That ugly prison is still there.

Nor was the penchant for big RVs Boomer. At ages 19 - 20 I worked in a factory turning out cheap aluminum windows for trailers, and another trailer factory stapling together the 2x2 framing for bathroom walls. Those of us Boomers who like RVs (I'm not one) came by the trait from our elders.

In fact, as Boomers got a little more power in the 80s, many of us were able to reverse the uglification process. For instance, I and fellow Boomers bought homes in the then blighted downtown neighborhood of Eola Heights in Orlando, Florida. We were able to get the city to keep residential zoning, give us historic neighborhood designation, take traffic calming measures, and take asphalt off of the brick streets. Likewise, buildings constructed in the 80s and 90s (reflecting Boomer influence) are, on balance, much less Brutalist. Many more include traditional designs that operate on a human scale. Finally, both the home school and Christian Classical education movements were begun by Boomers as a reaction against the cultural degradation in public schools. That degradation began well before the Boomer era with the prohibition of prayer in public schools. You are spot on in your condemnations but you're a bit off in rounding up the suspects.

Blogger SSgt Snafui February 28, 2021 9:21 AM

They refused to listen to anyone older than themselves, then they refused to listen to anyone younger...

The last Boomer will die from refusing to listen to their doctor because he can't possibly be old enough to know what he's talking about. That the doctor is three days from retirement is irrelevant.

@22 I read the novel when I was in HS & bewildered why it was so lauded when it was full of dislikeable characters & written with a semi-literate voice. Now I realize that it was 100% narcissism for the narcissists who saw themselves on the screen as if they had accomplished everything that Gump did. Gump was cast as an innocent fumbling through the world, exploited by those older like the woman who took his first time & in the Vietnam War.

I remember one commenter said that Jenny represented the 70s, who wanted the 60s, but got the 80s. That person failed to mentioned that according to the novel, the 60s & 70s proudly cucked the 80s with a bastard offspring.

How many astronauts can you fit in a VW Bug?

Blowing up and burning out Space Shuttles was baked in that cake from NASA's compromise n the mid-70s, with blame to the Silents and early Boomers for a yield to cost-cutting. Two 50-lb missions shoved into one 10-lb bag of bad design compromise. Worse, never funded to have a ready Shuttle on 1-2 day launch notice in case of rescue.

False. You can be habituated to choosing evil, either evil impulses or evil plans, to the point of losing your ability/strength to say 'no' to said impulses or scheming. Once you're at that point, you're wicked, whether you have any semblance of free will left or not. Impulsive or planned out, it doesn't matter, you're engaging in wicked acts and following demonic visions and desires. Ones that will eventually dominate your broken will.

A drug or sex addict seeking his next score, whether it involves planning or not, whether he waits for his next impulse or makes plans ahead of time, has given himself over to wickedness. He is therefore wicked. A man who is mentally and morally weak and is easily deceived over and over again has become habituated to choosing evil and wickedness and now, lacking any self control or awareness, has given himself over to wickedness and the demons. He too is wicked.

I've generally felt that some of what made Boomers what they are was the part where they lived under the shadow of nuclear annihilation: it's hard to care about the future OR the past when it might all be erased at any moment.

However, that's a hard excuse to continue with after the USSR collapsed, and yet many of them changed their behavior not a whit. Moreover, an explanation is not an excuse.

On that note, I also love my parents - they're wonderful people.

The boomers' leave behind them the home in the nice section of the major city area, with the good school district. The one their children couldn't afford to live in with the grandchildren so they had to commute 45 minutes--but at least the grandchildren didn't get beaten and raped at school weekly.

They leave behind them the condo in Scottsdale.

Too bad both properties were reverse mortaged.

But at least the grandchildren will have the Facebook memories of the boomer's 3 cruises a year, and their hectoring lectures on why the children and grandchildren were stupid because didn't get a job with a good pension plan so they could retire at 50.

How they worked hard each summer cutting grass so they could afford college with no loans. How it was such a struggle paying almost a whole year's salary just to afford a house in a nice area.

How lucky the grandchildren are, that they get to live in a diverse neighborhood, because they can get soul food, and Mexican food.

Unfortunately, the boomer mentality lives on in the minds of almost every American---in the refusal to read. Even 9 pages.

I first began to hate the Boomers when I realized that our society and culture was not always alienating and disfunctional, but that they were deliberately and gleefully destroyed by a particular self worshipping generation. Everything that was to be our inheritance has been tossed onto the raging flames of the abhorrent narcissism of these fake elders. I also hate them for the fact that everything I was told about how the world works, what is important in life, and how to be a man were all lies.

The fact that God's justice is unavoidable makes it amazing to me that so many of these aging Boomers refuse to repent of their wickedness and even continueto deny or defend it. The woe that the Boomers have caused as a result of their repugnant rebellion against they society in which they were born and their continued betrayal of their posterity is truly astonishing.

Nuclear Annihilation is not an excuse for Boomer anything. I was in high school during the Reagan/ USSR face-off. I went to a school right on the back side of a military base. It was a majority minority high school. The teachers did not know math beyond elementary school math. The white kids who were rotated in from other places, functional places, got together in class, which was more like a barely supervised zoo, one day, to figure out how long it took for a missile to launch from Russia, specific bases mentioned, to land at this one base. The kids knew they names of the Russian bases. They knew the names of the rockets. They knew acceleration times, they knew how long it took to get a bomb to explode. They figured out what they would do if I launched right then.

All of this was beyond any of the teachers' abilities. When you gripe, now, about failing schools and illiterate teachers, all it shows is that you weren't paying attention 30+ years ago, or you thought poor white or military kids or southern kids did not deserve and need an education. They educated themselves and each other.

The kids that survived their teenage years- that is, the ones that survived their Boomer parents- are decent, good, solid members of society doing a good job raising their own children. Some are into grandchildren at this point. These are people who could calculate their death time when they hadn't even kissed a boy or girl.

Blogger Crave February 28, 2021 10:45 AM

There is so much dead-on accurate with VD's blog post. Boomers are the most f'd up grandparents one could imagine, but, sadly, I realize that is the standard for grandparents these days. The Boomers can't do that. They're still talking about what "Rebels" whey were 50 years ago. And how great it is that drugs are being legalized and everyone can have an abortion. My favorite 'old people' that I've met were the ww1 vets we walked with as beavers/cubs/scouts through a long small town, every memorial day. I'm old enough to have done that a few times and still remember the old timers who fixed bayonets and leapt to their doom. The walk was miles and miles (bagpipe guys got tired) - those old guys said nothing, the entire way. Many of them were missing something, from eye-patches to limbs to pieces of their faces. This is/was one of the few 'military towns' around, full of English people from both WW's. I thought of those old men as heroes larger than life.

But really, looking back, signing up to a 4 year machine gun fire drill as target practice so the bankers could put us into perpetual debt... well 'bravery' isn't the word I associate with them nowadays. Maybe 'naive.'

We're always left with the choices of previous generations - I think the more they're admired or remembered at all, maybe the worst off we are for their time making decisions.

My BIL is a quintessential boomer. Offshored his entire department except for himself including personal friends of twenty-five years. Received a major comp package upgrade as well as tens of death threats from the now-jobless former colleagues dispossessed of their retirements.

BIL then retired at fifty-seven and purchased a second home on an expensive golf course in Florida. Keeps three sets of the most expensive golf clubs at his second private country club locker.

His two sons, each on a different side of thirty, cannot accumulate enough funds for a down payment on a house. Older son lives with a girlfriend of the same age who also has a good job and it’s either a nice wedding ceremony or more money towards a house. Younger son, a former All-Ivy football player with a great job, just moved back into his BIL’s summer home to save money towards a house down payment but he has to move out when BIL returns.

Funny thing, my blue collar father in law gave BIL the down payment on BIL’s first house and then assumed its mortgage after BIL had saved a large down payment for his oversized new family home back in the day. Bootstraps, you know.

BIL brags he “sent his kids to good colleges” and now he is entitled to enjoy his top tier pension. Turns out BIL is full of sh_t as both sons and the girlfriend are still paying off the interest on their student loans while attempting to buy homes. All three did the right things and are holding down stressful and unrewarding but remunerative jobs and not taking vacations apart from catching up on rest.

Future daughter-in-law is over thirty now, as are her ova, and looks tired. I have implored BIL to help them out so he can experience grandchildren and please the great grandparents who helped him. BIL is always telling folks he is “a man who knows things.” Tells me the kids have global opportunities he never did, and that forty is the new twenty. Commences negro worship by switching on some pointless game or other and then shames me that I hail from a dysfunctional household and don’t know anything worthwhile about families.

Narcissism, willful blindness and preference for non-whites in all things that are not the country club. BIL’s own sons are quietly beginning to resent him. Quintessential boomer.

After reading VD's explanation, it seems to me that all "anti-boomer" antipathy is somewhat misdirected. It is actually "anti-hippie" antipathy and animus. I am of the age cohort typically characterized as a "boomer," or "baby boomer" (turning 71 soon), and I loathe, hate and despise those of my age cohort who fall within the general outlines of "hip(pie)ness." That is to say, those who are solipsistic, navel-gazing, self-absorbed, demanding, hedonistic assholes who demanded freedom from all responsibility while enjoying the fruits of the blood, sweat and tears of preceding generations. They are the ones who decided it was a good idea to eat the seed corn of American society while at the same time denying the legitimacy of the American ethos. Fuckers. I agree they deserve to die. At the same time, I see the same attitudes and behaviors in generations that followed, so it is clearly not a specifically age-related issue, but rather one of temperament, education (or lack thereof) and integrity. It was the "hippies" among us who rejected the Biblical-based civilization norms that had served so well to foster American success among the nations. I only hope to live long enough to see all of them die off, regardless of age.

Blogger Doktor Jeep February 28, 2021 11:20 AM

On boomerism, boomers, and music;
One of the reasons why boomers stll boom is due to music. owen mentioned this once. it's a kind of MK ultra thing. every city or even large town has a "classic rock" station playing the entire range of boomer music ranging from their late teenage years through what would be their early 30s. And you can be sure that every last boomer who plays a radio at work or has it on at home while they do stuff has that station on.
It's because of this that the boomer is still feeling like everything is just fine andj peachy, like like the summer of '69.
i hardly know anybody in my generation that is still listenging to the stuff we had - mostly heavy metal - in the 1980s. Yes we still have the albums.
In my opinion, the last large count of white people is the boomers. They are also corrupted against their own civilization. They are the only genration that can still tune right into the MK ultra station to keep them right there in the summer of '69.
The outgunned, outvoted, and outspent - and spent - Generation X? Who cares. Keeping them ultra-'ed is not as important. They were already broken by the boomers and keeping them back in the 1980s rather then vengeful 'in the present"is not a threat like it would have been if the boomers woke up and repented.
One could expect maybe that the music of the global pied piper leading a generation to the destruction of its own civilization would at least be good. It's not. Most of it sucks.

This stretching it to 64 is a Boomer trick to make them seem more important than they are. Full disclosure I was born in 62, the Sex Pistols are more definitive to me than the Beatles. GenX revenge is a straight up numbers game. 1/3 of GenX was aborted. 1/3 had their parents divorce. Stepparents means, on global average, an 11% decline in resources devoted to that children, according to UN economics research.

GenX cannot go against the Boomers themselves, as an equal cohort. They can, however, act as a hinge, and as an army of breeders. Every GenX mother I know is intense about raising their children. I know that my Boomer relatives are very nervous about the politics and religion of my children: they should be, same as hyenas fear lions.

Econ-wise, I can read articles in financial planning papers where they are upset that new companies are not going public as quickly. Half of all new companies aim to remain in private hands for as long as possible. They don't want to get bought and stripmined.

As for bands, like I've been saying, kids these days are doing hand to hand, except it's electronically and globally, and not as time-bound. And none of it is Boomer elevator music. I can hear from my kids' phones, a new band touring right now, a song from an 80s movie, a 1950s cowboy song, a sea shanty, a rap song, and something electronica, something all on the car ride to somewhere. No one is turning on the radio.

I was born in 1959, which makes me a boomer, but I assure you I was a mere child when everything that has been complained about boomers was done. Woodstock, Civil Rights, Summer of Love, Drugs, Abortion, Beatles, Moon landing, Vietnam, gaming of our financial system, screwed up liberal colleges etc.-- I was a just a kid, so give me a break! I paid for my own college and my dad retired at 50. I remember him accusing me of being a yuppie in early 1980s but my feelings at the time was that I had to be self-involved as a matter of survival, as I don't remember any caring or consideration from either of my parents at any point. To me that is the boomer mentality that you speak of, but he was born 1930. My husband and I paid for our kids college and don't expect Social Security to even exist more than 10-15 years. I would never set foot in the Village in Florida you talked about a couple of weeks ago, those people are sheep and frankly looked 15 to 20 years older than me.

I've been thinking about the boomers and came up with two reasons to denigrate them.

One, they were the generation that embraced the counter culture on a mass scale. Prior to the boomers, the counter culture was limited to a small group of "beatnik" writers and their followers. The boomers made this counter-culture system level.

Two, the boomers embraced and sustained the "bubble" economics starting in the mid 90's with Greenspan pushing the redefinition of inflation in order to inflate the money supply and start the first bubble. Yes, Greenspan is not a boomer. But boomer policy makers embraced this "bubble" monetary policy hook, line, and sinker.

I still think this "boomer" hate is pretty convoluted. I mean, it seems to be a broad brush of an entire generation, but then refined to a mindset, or characterization of a subset of that generation that not everyone in the generation has and and large percentages of other generations also have.

The arguments are also convoluted. While I fully agree crediting the so called boomers with the moon landing is nonsense (Nazi's should probably get most of the credit), by the same logic boomers shouldn't get the blame for many of the societal ills credited to them. This is not to cast blame on previous generations as they are accused of, just trying to force integrity into the arguments. For example, there wasn't a boomer president until Clinton beat a WWII vet in 1992. There is a silent in the White House now, largely elected by post boomer generations, that is madly trying to undo the restorative measures his boomer predecessor attempted.

I get there is a particular sort of self indulgent type you despise, just appears to me you are using a 500 pound bomb when a sniper rifle would do.

To sum up, the whole issue seems to me like a typical lefty style of blame game. Like the gun control crowd. I don't have a gun, I don't like guns, guns are used in crimes, so lets get rid of all the guns. Then using convoluted logic, distorted facts and circular reasoning to justify the argument.

I figured out why/ how Boomers boomed. It was the music. It's emotional and it's soothing and it's 'nice', probably actually hypnotic.

And it lulled/ drove a generation away from productive civilisation to unbound alternatives.

Tribal music is hypnotic too but such that the physical is transcended to spirit. Classical is often intellectual, and if emotional prompts interpretation and discovery rather than bluntly telling you what is.

Music, in its various forms, is a tool that makes things happen. And the rock-ballad is probably the most destructive form ever conceived.

Blogger David McCarthy February 28, 2021 12:49 PM

I have 3 older brothers - one '65 and two '67 (twins). The 65 is a standard Gen Xer, one '67 loathes the Boomer, one '67 is the personification of the Boomer. Was I projecting when I made my comment? Possibly. But I notice it everywhere. Some of the worst Boomer narcissists Ive ever met were '65-'70. Just vile, seemingly psychopathically self-obsessed people. It has to be why the early Gen Xers just hate the Boomer spirit so much - they had to deal with a minority of Super-Boomer peers. The contrast between having some GenX classmates and some Super Boomer classmates must have been staggering.

There is a certain generation, or range of generations that had a reflexive fear of surgery or the hospital, maybe because in the old days it really was a Roach Motel.

Its all about drama OMG surgery! Rather than Great, I dont have to die, lose function etc.

Apart from the larger issue of the trustworthiness of medicine as a whole, the two times Ive been there I was happy to be there, because I was getting treatment needed, for something that otherwise could have killed me.
5 years ago had an episode of paroxysmal afib w tachycardia, never had prior. Last year had diverticultis flareup with a perforation, also never had prior. Managed to dodge surgery, but on IV antibiotics nd nothing by mouth for a week.

In both cases I was glad to be there given the alternative.

Proverbs 8:13. Vox hates Boomers because a Boomer is a person with evil in their heart. He has no choice to reject them because of 1 thessalonians 5:22 reject every kind of evil. They have the same options that others have had. They can reject their evil ways and return to God or not. These are people who literally talk about leaving nothing for their children because they want to spend it for themselves. They have openly rejected God to replace him with "Science" which is statistically wrong more than 50% of the time. We are metaphorically walking in the wilderness right now because they didn't have faith in God and He is waiting for them to die. Vox doesn't hate the individual but the attitudes they have towards everyone else, including their own children.

I remember it as if it were yesterday. There I was on holiday in France with my transistor Radio and I listened late at night to a broadcast from England (so I suppose on the Medium Wave) of the Moon Landings, so I know it happened.

Is not Yellow Submarine one of Ringo's? - I was always charmed by his Octopus's Garden - not that I was EVER a Beatles fan and have never owned any of their discs - could not stand Love me Do, Can't buy me Love or She Loves You or Hey Jude - and don't get me started on one of the most awful songs ever - Imagine, yet Yesterday apparently the most recorded song ever comprises four seven (not eight) bar phrases yet it does not sound odd. One of the things that makes the Beatles stand out and that includes Yellow Sub is the variety of their songs not just generally but the trajectory over what was a mere seven years - the same cannot be said for The Stones or The Who or The Kinks though that may not be a bad thing. Still my own teacher - a reasonably distinguished composer - doubtless out of jealousy bought the sheet music of Hard Day's Night and showed me that the song ends with the wrong chord - I am afraid he was rather missing the wood for the trees. I was there however for Beatlemania and have never forgotten the first time and in a shop window I saw the iconic Beatles for Sale cover photo the one with their faces in half shadow. It may seem ordinary now but then... It was an extraordinary few years: England in the late fifties had a small record industry when it came to popular music. Most disc in the charts were American or British copies of American discs, indeed it was not unknown for three British artists to be competing against the American original in a bid to rise up the charts. Had anyone predicted that within a few years native British males and not formally musically trained (unlike songwriters like say Geoff Godard or Norrie Paramour) would not merely conquer the British charts with their own songs but the American charts too I would have thought the idea implausible and yet....

Duran squared are also of course a British band - and I do have two of their maxi singles, not that pop music is exactly my thing though I must express my gratitude to VD for drawing to my attention Baby Metal's Chocolate.

My beef against the boomers is that we produced Tony Blair. It was then that I realised conclusively that we had failed miserably. Things may have been a bit straight-laced when I was born - you youngsters may not realise how repressive post war British life was - at first even the Beatles came on stage in an office suit - but now matters have gone to the opposite extreme so you had and within a few years bands on stage like The Who smashing their equipment. How daft is that! It was after all the sixties that amongst other things saw the legalisation of Abortion, Homosexuality, Immigration and Divorce. I am not the only boomer I know who is somewhat appalled by what has happened. Of course it may have been different in America.

Blogger Daniel February 28, 2021 1:29 PM

I will merely observe that if you use 20 years as a generation, you will get false answers. Your sampling rate is about half what it should be. Think in 10-year groups, from mid-decade to mid-decade, and you will gain insight.

There's a reason why people born in the late 1950s and early 1960s loudly deny any association with the Boomers. Because they aren't Brat Boomers, they're Baby Busters. And if you think Vox dislikes Brat Boomers, talk to a Baby Buster. We get confused with those self-centered spendthrift twits.

My oldest first cousin, born in the early 50s, wasn't just a Communist. He was a full-on hard-core Trotskyite. He used to tell me stories of how our grandfather, who worked for the Tsar's family, fled Russia after the Revolution, and harbored a deep and lifelong hatred of all things left, used to get into heated arguments with him. My grandfather sounds like one of the few Jews who left Russia in that era that weren't Communist. If not the only one. He's that unusual, from the things I've read. It struck a deep nerve that his first grandchild turned out like that.

Then, in typical Boomer fashion, he discovered the joys of making money, and had the knack for making lots and lots of it in 70s and 80s in one of those get-rich-quick infomercial schemes in real estate with a pitch of a lecture for $10 and a huge up-sell of manuals on how to do so for $500. He was an incredible and powerful speaker, traveling the country, filling large halls, and minting money. Honestly, it's kind of revolting, although he never pointed a gun at anyone to separate them from their money. The information was real, but all freely available. Of course, in a market where property values are going up, it's hard not to make money.

Personally, he was always generous and kind to me, so there is that. But he is classic Boomer in nearly every way. Very self-absorbed and loves to talk and boast about his political connections etc, which were pretty substantial in the Bush and Trump eras. When we lived near each other for a time, always was eager to convince me, having become gone from assimilated to fully observant Jew, that he wasn't so different than me, with his barely half-hearted interest in it and his gentile wife. Has one daughter who is a lesbian with bad daddy issues and a child. Retch. Another kid is fairly well-adjusted and married to a person of the opposite sex with several children.

I have another Boomer cousin, his brother, who got into subprime loans to low income people back in the 90s, well before the housing bubble of the oughts. He too minted money, but not as much as his older brother. My non-boomer brother worked for him for a time. He hated the job, and even though he was good at it and there was nothing illegal going on, felt dirty taking advantage of people's naivete and greedy nature to talk them into loans they should not be taking.

He got out of that pretty quickly and moved into a clean line of work. It took some time to build his own business, but now he does very well creating beautiful things. It's not the kind of business a boomer would get into.

Strauss and Howe are more accurate than Madison ave here. 60 to 77 is a better gauge of gen X as well. 77 to 94 works well for millenials and 94 to 11 appears that it will work for zyklon. 17 years is about as far as youn can reasonably stretch a generation and have any meaningful commonality between early and late cohorts. Boomers certainly want to expand the scope/size of the the their generation because it makes them feel more important.

This. The problem I've found with women is that so many of them are on drugs, not the boomer woodstock variety but the boomer pharmacist variety. Birth control is the gateway drug, and women go on it early. Once they walk through that door, the problems the pill causes now requires medication, and the problems that the pill causes in life (desolation, loneliness, urban centers becoming men graveyards) requires mood-altering medication.

The first step to repudiating boomer philosophy, is hating the effects of that philosophy. Hatred is a useful emotion when properly exploited. Notably it's what anti-depressants are there to cure us of...

I generally like the Beatles, Stones and such, but lordy how they got massively overplayed long after their sell by date. And DJ's wouldn't even play the b side, just the same hits over and over. I kinda think part of the reason Rush and talk radio in general took off was because people were so sick of it. Having said that, I don't think that Beatles era music was bad, just a new type of art in its infancy. By that I mean bands going electric, experimenting with synthesizers, wawa peddles and such. Things that have greatly refined over the decades, accounting for the music improving. Like how a modern Corvette is much more refined than the original doesn't mean in 1956 the Corvette wasn't awesome.

Nowadays what I like is along the lines of Alice in Chains, Godsmack, and Tool. Most pop music is revolting, and rap is a stain on humanity. Can't remember the last time I listened to a Beatles tune, and don't care if its a long time before I do.

Storytime! Yay!

How's about my parents: one went to a private high school. One went to a public, blue collar high school in a small city. They both took Latin. They both attended segregated schools. They both got a competent mid-century education. They were prepared for life by ages 17. Then they went off to their destinies: college, military, family, more degrees, more professional licenses, the ability to fund all of their very, very, very bad life choices and selfish whims.

We, their children, got shipped off to relatives. They were "too busy" to raise their own children. Shipped back to them as teenagers. We, their children, were in fully integrated public schools in big cities. Did I mention fully integrated? Big city? Right next to a housing project? The school could not manage Latin, or math. It could not manage English, for crying out loud. I sat in a class full of people who graduated with degrees who could not read the word C-A-T.

My parents thought it was important for the work of social integration that their children go to fully integrated public schools. My parents felt guilty about riding the (safe) school bus past the black school bus headed to the black school, back when. Their jobs, of course, were functionally segregated by those delightful things like college degrees, professional licenses, and real estate choices. And Boomer cultural habits- just delightful restaurants, bookstores, cafes, shops.

They went to one PTA meeting, one, once. They were appalled at those terrible, awful, uncivilized, diverse shall we say?- parents. No clue that maybe the parents were more mature than the kids? No clue what it was like to sit in class with, well, every youtube video- dancing on desks, braiding hair, brawling, incompetent, illiterate, innumerate teachers.

Uh, count on your fingers, Shane. When the SILENTS stood and watched Hart-Celler become law, I was 14 (born in '56). I was NOT voting for waves and waves of immigration. (Neither, for that matter, were the silents!)

Don't attribute sole responsibility to ANY American generation for the (((actions))) that massively furthered the destruction of our nation. Certainly, the silents, and the boomers, and even some of the Xers, did nothing to stop the destruction. And yes, the boomers threw themselves into furthering the destruction, but that doesn't let off the hook those who ALSO did nothing to slow or stop the destruction.

Boomer-hate is certainly deserved, but the boomers were not the sole causes, actors, or facilitators... so don't let off others who stood by...

Hell, even your name is a declaration of identity groups:
Deploarable: "Conservative, Trumps supporter, civnat, anti-racist"
Crone: "Feminist, over 60, possible neo-Pagan. If a Christian, the type of Christian woman that has a "ministry" at Church."

And let's not forget the greatest boomer achievement of all time: the peace symbol!

The peace symbol (which always looked to me like the head of a carnivorous fly) was invented by the "greatest" Gerald Holtom (1914–1985), a British fellow-traveler.

Boomers were the first generation to be saturated in Cabal-run mass-media from the cradle (due to their parents' inexperience in knowing any better). They grew up on television, never knowing hardship. As metal they left the foundry without tempering, and were weak.

They are as they were made. It took the late-19th century "progressives" half a century of calculated effort to produce an enervated and helpless generation.

Do you know why Boomer invented the Feed the African Children porn charities? Because even as adults, they didnt want to clean their plates.

Virtually all communist-fronts and charities né Cabal money-laundering facilities were created before Boomers were in their teens, or had been born at all. E.g., Oxfam was created in 1942.

By the time I was 15, my mother had been with 5 men, that I knew of. By the time I was 20: My father, a lifelong hunter and fisherman, married a vegan SRF cult member, and threw out his entire past. Waited until my grandfather died to pull his stunt. Then they all fought over his money. They are a generation of secrets, lies, and hypocrisy.

"People can and should obviously grouped by various traits."

Grouping by traits is not the problem. It's when you create an arbitrary group encompassing everyone born in a 20 period and then assuming they all share the same traits where the problem lies.

My only disagreement with the Beatles here is Hey Jude being the stupidest song ever. Not Yellow Submarine. That was a close second

However, that's a hard excuse to continue with after the USSR collapsed, and yet many of them changed their behavior not a whit. Moreover, an explanation is not an excuse.

On that note, I also love my parents - they're wonderful people.

I ended up in an argument with a couple of boomers last year on this topic. Conservative ones no less. I would have thought it would be a shared experience, just 30 years apart.

According to them, it was "just different" or "more serious" than the nuke threat when I was a kid being taught the same duck and cover drills in elementary school in the 80s. Even as kids we wondered if they were pointless drills in case of nukes being launched. They might help in case of an earthquake but otherwise not so much help.

I don't know if it's true that we hate Boomers the most. I never really felt I belonged. As a cusper (64) I knew very early how f'd my position was in the demographic bubble I supposedly belonged to. Tried to date boomer guys, uh. I'll say I hated them first, ha.

Happy b-b-birthday Roger Daltrey. In celebration, every comment you make here adds a year to your life. Boomers only.

I realize I'm trying to instruct the willfully ignorant here, but If it doesn't apply to you, he's not talking about you. I was born in 1959, but I share very few traits with Boomers, and even fewer I'm not ashamed of. Therefore, Vox is not talking about me.
What part of "It's not when one was born that matters, but rather, one's identity and values" is difficult to understand?
This is exactly the narcissism and self-involvement that VD is talking about.
