The convergence of Tolkien

Christopher Tolkien, the longtime guardian of his father's literary works, is dead, alas:

We are now calling for papers for the Tolkien Society Summer Seminar, which will be held online on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July 2021. The theme is Tolkien and Diversity.

Call for Papers

The Tolkien Society Seminar is a short academic conference of both researcher-led and non-academic presentations on a specific theme pertaining to Tolkien scholarship. The online setting of the 2020 seminar saw an increased interest with over 400 attendees from 37 countries. We are delighted to be running another online seminar that will be free for all.

While interest in the topic of diversity has steadily grown within Tolkien research, it is now receiving more critical attention than ever before. Spurred by recent interpretations of Tolkien’s creations and the cast list of the upcoming Amazon show The Lord of the Rings, it is crucial we discuss the theme of diversity in relation to Tolkien. How do adaptations of Tolkien’s works (from film and art to music) open a discourse on diversity within Tolkien’s works and his place within modern society? Beyond his secondary-world, diversity further encompasses Tolkien’s readership and how his texts exist within the primary world. Who is reading Tolkien? How is he understood around the globe? How may these new readings enrich current perspectives on Tolkien?

Representation is now more important than ever and Tolkien’s efforts to represent (or ignore) particular characteristics requires further examination. Additionally, how a character’s identity shapes and influences its place within Tolkien’s secondary-world still requires greater attention. This seminar aims to explore the many possible applications of “diversity” within Tolkien’s works, his adaptations, and his readership.

Papers may consider, but are not limited to:

  • Representation in Tolkien’s works (race, gender, sexuality, disability, class, religion, age etc.)
  • Tolkien’s approach to colonialism and post-colonialism
  • Adaptations of Tolkien’s works
  • Diversity and representation in Tolkien academia and readership
  • Identity within Tolkien’s works
  • Alterity in Tolkien’s works

Meanwhile, Amazon is methodically going about destroying the popular image of The Lord of the Rings:

“This is going to be very different from The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, which are on the road stories. Stories of companionship, stories that take place on journey, but this one is going to be set up like Game of Thrones. We are going to be following different characters in different locations who are going to converge on each other in the end.”

Buechler continues, “They aren’t going to have any Hobbits. There aren’t going to be any wizards. They are going to have, like they said, new characters and new lands. And that is where the big problem is. This is a giant blank canvas. This takes place over thousands of years and that giant blank canvas is going to be filled in with a couple of young, inexperienced showrunners. Does that sound a little bit familiar to you?”

“And those untested showrunners, who have admittedly an experienced writers room with writers from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, are going to have to fill a lot of time with drama and relationship stuff. Modern relationship stuff. And let’s not even get into the dialogue, which you won’t be able to adapt because there really isn’t any like there is in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.” Buechler states.

He then makes comparisons to Game of Thrones, “As you all know things were going great for Game of Thrones through Season 4 until Dan and Dave passed up the books and they couldn’t adapt George’s dialogue anymore. And they tried to interpret what George might have wanted. And George is alive. They could have asked him anything at any time and they still produced the biggest disaster in television history.”

Buechler then questions, “How do you think it’s going to go for [JD Payne] and [Patrick McKay] over there? Obviously, they don’t have J.R.R. Tolkien to talk to. They no longer have the greatest guardian of his father’s work and one of the greatest sons whose ever lived, Christopher Tolkien to talk to either.”

The YouTuber then points to a rumor, covered here on Bounding Into Comics, that there was a shift in the direction of the show following Christopher Tolkien’s death.

Buechler states, “Then, of course, there was the rumored big shift behind the scenes right after Christopher Tolkien’s death. He died in January 2020 and in March 2020 it was rumored from that a lot of the writers were fired and they rewrote Season 1 and they removed Tom Shippey, the Tolkien scholar.”

Next, Buechler warns, “And that brings us to the politicking. Are we going to get the nihilist, post-modern, intersectional Lord of the Rings. I think this is a good possibility considering everything we’ve seen from modern Hollywood. Then there’s the fact that we already have a nihilist, post-modern, Lord of the Rings, it was called Game of Thrones.”

Buechler then recaps many of his concerns about the show pointing to rumors of nudity, the hiring of an intimacy coordinator, the change in story structure, and the show being run by two former Bad Robot employees.

He then adds a report that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos mandated Amazon create their own version of Game of Thrones. That report came from Variety and they claimed, “The mandate from Jeff Bezos is clear: Bring me “Game of Thrones.” That’s the word that has the creative community buzzing this week about a major strategy shift underway for Amazon Studios’ original series efforts.”

I should probably wrap up the extended second volume of Arts of Dark and Light, shouldn't I....

Typical corporate MO. You would think from the many, many corpses of World of Warcraft-derivatives, vampire TV shows, and extended cinematic universes that feature only a single film, that corporations would learn "Bring me *popular thing* has never resulted in a popular thing.

Blogger basementhomebrewer February 23, 2021 1:53 PM

Christopher did a good job with his Father's work until later in his life. The fact the Tolkein society converged immediately following his death shows he didn't do much to keep the infiltrators out. It's a lesson to learn for anyone trying to safe guard a family legacy. It's not enough to put your time into preserving their work. You need to ruthlessly police any organizations associated with the work, and find someone who is going to do the same when you pass on. If you do not have direct control of a group, speak out loudly and publicly against the people in it who are trying to use the work as a skin suit. Make it clear to the majority of the real fans of your family's work that those people/organizations do not represent the work.

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 February 23, 2021 1:57 PM

It didn't bode well when shortly after Christopher Tolkien's death, the YouTube channel "History of Middle-Earth" had to change their name to "History of the Ages" for copyright reasons.

They want to take over and own Tolkien's works and re-invent them into Satanic perversions. Tolkien himself was trying to create a mythology for England, so it makes sense that they would pervert that.

A story about faith, courage, friendship, and all the other traditional Western virtues, but, you know, we shit on all those in our version with nudity and senseless violence and a rejection of the idea of good and evil.

Next up, a version of Mary Poppins, but Mary is a black lesbian activist and she fights the evil cis-white patriarchy by selling little white kids as slaves to brave and understanding Arab Muslims, so the kids can learn to check their privilege. After that, a version of the Secret of NIMH where the hyper intelligent rats (all voiced by people of color) manage to engineer a virulent plague that wipes out everyone of European heritage, saving not only themselves, but the rest of the world as well.

I think that Dungeons & Dragons has pretty much already used the gains to be made from a Tolkien-like world, with similar variety of intelligent creatures. It's the name recognition that is obviously central to the wreckers - but is that enough?

The variety of D&D storylines is guaranteed to be better than this upcoming 'revision' of Tolkien's original. And it's never really broken into the mainstream, one or two bad movies that flopped. Computer games is the one place the mythos has broken in - from "Bard's Take" onward.

Before Tolkien, elves were small mischevious creatures and not an elder race of tall beautiful people - for example. And did he invent orcs?

This whole idea will be shunned by the purists, and forgotten sooner than the remakes of "Robocop" and "Total Recall."

On the other hand, it's time for an anti-PC fantasy to counter every talking-point in the philosophy of the Pharisatanics. We are in the time where we can make the next big fantasy leap much like Tolkien did with LoTR using all the things that have roused themselves against us as well. And with our ancestral culture folks lore, as Tolkien did. He paved the way for us to do this with LoTR.

I reread LOTR end to end last year, first time in probably 25 years.
Then watched the extended editions of the Jackson movies.
It's a shame that success of the first movie, based on his fairly close adherence to the books w pretty reasonable compromises for the screen, emboldened him to go further astray in TTT and ROTK.
Watching after reading showed there was more deviation than I remembered, and more than needed. Jackson's Denethor always struck me as very wrong. He's supposed to be proud and stern but noble leader who's weary and finally despairs, while Jackson's version makes him out simply corrupted so that Pippin entering his service really feels wrong.

I have read Lord of the Rings over 40 times (stopped counting after 30, but should be in that ballpark by now). Embarassing, I know. Still, nothing has been more influential in my life than Tolkien's works; the most important one was that his letters made me a Christian again after some relapsed years in my teens.

I did watch all Jackson movies; still think there's more good than bad in all of the LotR ones, and in the 1st Hobbit, even though all of them, except Fellowship, had terrible, terrible things.

And I won't watch the new series. No, not even for free. I might watch it if I'm paid a million dollars for it.

I can't bring myself to get upset about this. This Satanic inversion of LoTR will be very quickly forgotten by the public, and mostly ignored. They will fail at destroying the popular image of LoTR, because Phari-Satanic SJW projects pushing diversity propaganda, nihilism, and postmodernism are almost always poorly made crapfests, and are thus....forgettable.

I only read the Hobbit, many years ago. I should go and buy the LoTR books, while I still can.

But Winston is a bad guy. He sold out his mother and sister. And he betrayed his lady love. He had contempt for the washerwoman and any other prole.

It's easy to make Winston a bad guy because he is a weak-willed, power-maddened drone of the party.

Disney, again, easy. The three fairies in the woods raising Sleeping Beauty? That's a pagan, lesbian throuple, easy. Or asexual sisters worshipping a pagan goddess in triplicate.

Maleficent has been covered, quite competently, by Angelina.

Cinderella has fan fic where Cinderella is a witch appealing to her familiars- the mice and birds, and petitioning a wise, female willow for all her material goods that dazzle the prince into blind love.

Frozen has been covered, here, repeatedly.

The little mermaid, Disney version, is already a disobedient, cross-species witch-bargainer. That just needs to go to 11 somehow.

The one with the redhead: she endangers her father and poisons her mother in order to remain a child. Hard to sell that as wholesome entertainment.

I'm watching a documentary on D&D art. They had to include a fart-sniffing segment on how wonderful it was that D&D art was so diverse now. They were specifically told not to draw white people. I'm betting we'll see anything but straight white men in The non-Lord of the Rings

Try as they might, but JRR and Christopher are dead, and with them, the keys to the story. I own almost every book that was published before Christopher's death, and I will never purchase another. I pay no attention to any amount of media that's been associated with their story that they weren't personally involved with. It's done. The story is complete and can never be altered, try as they might.

I detest Jackson. Mostly because he thought that he was a better story teller than Tolkien. Turns out he wasn't.

Jackson's trilogy was far from perfect, but he knew enough to leave Tom Bombadil out of the script. Or try to compress a thousand pages into a crapulent ninety-minute cartoon. Tolkien was a phenomenal writer, but not all dialogue aged well, let alone lent itself to cinema. (1m40s...*cringe*)

All Hollywood blockbusters are Cabal money-laundering projects, to be sure, and these studios would have been perfectly happy churning out wall-to-wall shit-quality CGI from the outset*, but Jackson ensured that hundreds of craftsmen earned a good living making thousands of costumes, weapons, and suits of armor. He didn't have to do that. (The franchise was also largely responsible for lifting HEMA out of obscurity.)

And today, it is impossible to not envision The One Ring as being an allegory to "the ticket".

(*Jackson was more or less forced into directing "The Hobbit" after del Toro bailed. The inferior CGI was irritating, but that trilogy's major flaw was Martin Freeman's mouse-hobbit chimera shtick. Yeech.)

If Lord of the Rings survived the Bakari's perversion, with Aragorn and Boromir wearing dresses, it can survive cuck-holded Bezos and his nihilistic Gamma swarm. It is one of the most read books in history. The ballast of Rings readers might swarm even the gates of Mordor and bring righteous order.

And lo and behold C.S. Lewis & Tolkien knew:

Writing about Walt Disney in 1937 to JRR Tolkien:
“All the terrifying bits [of Snow White] were good, and the animals really most moving: and the use of shadows (of dwarfs and vultures) was real genius. What might not have come of it if this man [Walt Disney] had been educated–or even brought up in a decent society?”

Tolkien later wrote:
“ It might be advisable to let the Americans do what seems good to them — as long as it was possible…to veto anything from or influenced by the Disney studios (for all whose works I have a heartfelt loathing).”

They knew. Even nearly 90 years ago, the good men were fighting the Devilmouse.

What's interesting is how when the SJW's move to corrupt Tolkien, they will really be paying homage to him.
One theme, that informs Tolkien is the idea of subcreation.
Only God can create ex nihilo, all other creation is subcreation, and most follow the moral order to be valid.
When Feanor creates the Silmarils and comes to see the Silmarils as his own, and locks them away, we see the beginning of the end.
When stolen, Feanor speaks an oath that will lead to massive suffering of the elves.
Morgoth would also corrupt and pervert the spirit of subcreation with his creation of orcs from corrupted elves.
Which brings us to the SJW's in Fantasy, and specifically those adapting Tolkien for Amazon, they lack the genius and creativity of Feanor, but they have the malicious spirit of Melkor in spades.
Just as Melkor turned elves into orcs, they will turn Tolkien into dross.
They will do this because the Secret Fire does not burn within them, therefore they can do nothing else but corrupt.

Blogger Macs February 24, 2021 11:20 AM

Sounds to me like they are straying from the harmony and leaping forward with brash and arrogant noise like the sound of discordant trumpets. Melkor lives.

Hobbits, wizards, rings, a firey eye, and Howard Shore music are what the (non-book reading) general public associate with Lord of the Rings. Aside from Satanic joy in iinversion, what is the point of making a Lord of the Rings show without these things?

One might say profit. And that’s obviously the main thing. But they could profit more with Hobbits and Wizards.

What is left, anyway? Numinoreans? Funny languages. New Zealand scenery?

Butt aex and ultraviolence, too. But I think they’d want to see Wizards and Hobbits doing that moreso.

Corrupted Numenor, even before Sauron, probably had many of those "Game of Thrones" things going on.

But Tolkien simply had no interest in them. Why? Because there's no need or joy in subcreating them; people who like that sort of thing can just look at human history, and it would even make them better educated.
