Gab is hacked and down

It appears that the security breach reported last week by Wired was genuine, as Gab is currently down as a consequence of the hack:

The social media site Gab blamed “oligarch tyrants” who keep the US “under occupation” for being forced offline, after they refused to pay a ransom in Bitcoin to a hacker who had pilfered gigabytes of user data through an exploit.

“We took the site down to investigate a security breach,” Gab announced on Monday afternoon via their Twitter account. Users trying to log into Gab were greeted with an “internal error” message and told to try again.

“Banks are banning us. Hackers are attacking us. Journalists are libeling us. Why?” Gab tweeted, calling the US “a totally subverted nation under the occupation of a handful of oligarch tyrants who use their power to destroy dissenters.”

Gab went offline after several verified accounts on the social media platform displayed a ransom note signed “cApTaIn JaXpArO,” claiming the credit for the hack and accusing CEO Andrew Torba of lying to his “despicable users” and not caring about their privacy.

The hacker, whose name is a reference to Captain Jack Sparrow of Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, claimed that last week’s hack “fully compromised” Gab, including 35 million public and three million private posts, 50,000 emails, 7,000 passwords.

More importantly, they claimed to have obtained 831 verification documents – “which the ransom was about” – but Gab refused to pay 8 Bitcoin for them.

Unfortunately, Torba is still trying to convince Republican politicians to help him rather than taking the necessary steps to relocate outside of a US system that has repeatedly demonstrated that it is actively opposed to his operation.

Gab is an American business run by law-abiding American citizens that can't get a business checking account, can't process credit and debit cards online, and can't access basic online services run by tech monopolies. Where are our leaders? Where is the GOP?

What part of "bifactional ruling party" does he still not understand?

This is why it's necessary to break free of the cult of free, and to wisely utilize whatever resources can be mustered. In not-at-all-unrelated news, UATV is about to pass the 2,000-video mark and SG is averaging nearly 80k posts per month. If you're not subscribing yet, this is the right time to do so.

Gab is a sad place.

It's become increasingly less functional over time as a website.

During its initial post-launch phase, it failed miserably at producing a lively public conversation, with the most vocal being a mass of people so toxic they were banned by 8chan.

I spent a few days trying to interact with said people before giving up, and from then on spent my time advocating improvements to the site on Torba's feed, all of which fell on deaf ears as changes rendered it less and less usable.

I'm increasingly of the opinion that "social media", as defined by public timelines with dopamine baits such as "like" buttons, need to be outlawed for the same reason gambling and hard drugs are outlawed.

The internet of anonymously published, individual websites was a far superior and more socially productive environment.

Gab is back but the tranny demon hackers(backed by Jewish supremacists who rule the US) will also be back.

To Torba's credit, these numbers square with Gab's assertions that emails and passwords compromised were those associated with groups rather than individual accounts.

I remember glimpsing graphs in passing posts and reports showing hundreds of thousands of users registered during various twitter and facebook purges, doubtless though it is that most of those accounts were abandoned shortly after due to the site being a slag heap.

i think Google has pulled Infogalactic down off of their search results.

the transporter is still shown but i don't see the site itself anywhere on the first page results.

first option being the "Rational Wiki" entry is just the cherry on top.

Gab has bee fast and stable for weeks. They gained something like 700% new users immediately after the major Qanon purges at Twitter and FB, so they needed to add servers in a hurry. They have dozens now, in multiple data centers.

Blogger Ben Pratt March 08, 2021 9:56 PM

You're either full of crap or years behind. Gab has a better UX than twitter and better community than just about anywhere.

Blogger Noticer of Things March 08, 2021 9:59 PM

What would moving Gab out of the US entail? Moving the main team to a different country? Would that even stop these kind of attacks or just protect against some US gov't shutdown of the site? Torba is not a rocket scientist, so I hope he has good people to give him advice about this.

Re: Social Galactic, I subscribed to Unauthorized in early 2020 and got an SG invite around then. I was pretty busy and not very interested in any social media at that time, and I didn't respond to the invite for some time. When I did some months later, the link was not working and I was instructed to contact an admin. I tried to do that, but never received a response. I don't want to bother the Dark Lord with this kind of issue, but if there's anyone here who could let me know who I should contact about this it would be much appreciated, as I'm very interested in SG these days.

The ransom note absolutely reek of "this is what we think hackers type like". Doesn't quite pass the smell test.

Blogger Crunchy Cachalot March 08, 2021 10:42 PM

Where are our leaders?

This sort of braindead "thinking" is a big part of the problem. They're not our leaders, they're our assistants, but since there seems to be very little impetus towards actually firing any of the worthless fucks, they've come to believe they are our "leaders". It's supposed to be a representative government, not electing power-mad ugly girls as captains for the got-damn flag corps.

Gab is back up. A user is going after the hackers tit for tat & has a website with his finds. https://yourdaddyjoey.com/Emma-Best/ of course the hackers are degenerate wretches.

Blogger Theproductofafineeduction March 08, 2021 11:29 PM

There was an individual on gab who said he had information on the hackers who were ostensibly black mailing and had posted some info.

Seems this next round might be a retaliatory move to something that’s about to drop

I don't know how much attention Torba paid to designing a robust security architecture for the Gab platform, but if he neglected to take that into consideration at the outset, then he's not the smart, wise man I thought he was. ANYONE who establishes an alternative platform as a challenge to Big Tech and the Deep State paints a target on themselves for malicious actors. That's just plain common sense. Cutting corners in platform security, or ignoring it altogether, is unforgivably stupid.

How do you get the SG invite? I have both a UATV subscription and SocialGalactic Bronze subscription and haven't ever received an SG invite. Would appreciate a point in the right direction.

Blogger Shimshon March 09, 2021 12:31 AM

Torba is not so different than Tucker Carlson, who is happy to enumerate many idiotic and evil things, then resort to his clever but helpless refrain, "Is this America?!" As if there's nothing to be done but moan.

It's outrage porn, and Torba is just as guilty of pimping it too. If he were serious, he wouldn't keep trying to keep his business in America, where they clearly don't want it.

Blogger The Pitchfork Rebel March 09, 2021 1:14 AM

Gab is back up. I read Torba's explanation and it is a good one. He identified the issue, said what he didn't do correctly, and then took the correct action.

He is still learning and what he's doing is hard. If you don't know this, security at scale is damn hard and it's easy to make mistakes. Gab's loyal following will forgive.

The war is out there, ongoing, and real.

The services provided are fast and stable, this is sure.
The site lacks basic features though such as the ability to search for posts based on text contained, making it difficult to impossible to find accounts of interest to follow.

Honestly, pol is a better model for free and anonymous speech.

Add a slashdot style moderation and metamoderation policy based on post contribution from your IP address and you have the beginnings of something that's not a complete dumpster fire.

Gab's working fine again. Complaints about low quality discourse are false. Feed curation is an individual responsibility. I block and unfollow aggressively, and the result is a good signal:noise ratio. Better than any other comparably right-wing forum.

I won't consider SocialGalactic until it's public. The Left's goal is to chase the true Right off the public Web.

The exposure of DMs and ID verification documents is a disappointing real consequence of rushed and amateurish execution. However, Torba is #1 since nobody else provided a viable Rightist Twitter during the critical pre-stealection phase during which QTrump built the Red Tide. The only people on the Right I know of with the demonstrated competence to non-hypocritically criticize Torba for it are QTrump, PByrne and team 8kun.

Predictions of Gab's demise here have been greatly exaggerated. I'm much more worried about InfoGalactic, which I think made a strategic error by one-time forking Wikipedia, thereby starting a countdown to obsolescence inevitably faster than content contribution growth. The irony of Torba's midwit #1A strategy working better than VD's planetary data core aspirations is thick.

The Persecution of Gab is sounding every bit as suspiciously sensationalistic as the Persecution of Alex Jones.

Mass, coordinated effort against GEORGEnews began yesterday, and all chats were disabled. Various & sundry calling them out as frauds, but it's all very suspicious. We'll see.

Before January, when Gab had a massive influx of users, I would have agreed with you. At least in regards to the community.

@26 "The site lacks basic features though such as the ability to search for posts based on text contained, making it difficult to impossible to find accounts of interest to follow."

This is deliberate design choice: Andrew doesn't want the enemy searching for ammo to use against users. As this attack proves, this is a risk.

Blogger James Dixon March 09, 2021 11:14 AM

Torba is reasonably smart, but where in any of his public statements have you seen any evidence that he's wise?

Yeah, J21 is now used as a derogatory slur on Gab.

They didn’t do incident response. This is what happens. The only reason mean time to detection is going down lately is because ransomware is becoming more common, and with ransomware, the hacker himself purposefully alerts you to his presence. Even if Gab restores all their servers from scratch, the hacker probably discovered some credentials and will use them in a subsequent attack. Gab should have hired an incident response consultant the moment they knew they were breached.

Blogger Canada78Bear March 09, 2021 3:22 PM

Gab is doing way to much complaining to be considered honest.

If I can get an Alipay account and take internet transactions then they can too. This isn't ignorance on their part it is intentional and they don't want to fix it.

Blogger Leo Littlebook ID:16216229492837658552 March 10, 2021 11:58 AM

For starters, the opposite of "public website" is "private website," not "premium website." That was already clear from the context of Left driving the Right off the public Web.

It's like if a dog defensively barked at a misperceived threat to his pseudo-pack, but could parrot half-understood human phrases.
