Oscar fades

Forget seeing these movies. I've never even heard of them. Literally no one has ever even mentioned on of them. The Dark Herald explains why the Oscars are dying with an increasingly converged Hollywood, tracing it all back to THE ENGLISH PATIENT at Arkhaven:

The Oscars have been heading in this same direction for a while and this year they finally arrived.  I didn’t see a single one of the nominees this year and I don’t know anyone who did.

Here is the list of nominees for Best Picture for the 2021 Academy Awards:

David Parfitt, Jean-Louis Livi and Philippe Carcassonne, Producers

Shaka King, Charles D. King and Ryan Coogler, Producers

Ceán Chaffin, Eric Roth and Douglas Urbanski, Producers

Christina Oh, Producer

Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Chloé Zhao, Producers

Ben Browning, Ashley Fox, Emerald Fennell and Josey McNamara, Producers

Bert Hamelinck and Sacha Ben Harroche, Producers

Marc Platt and Stuart Besser, Producers

No impact. No idea.  And no desire to see any of these art house flicks.

And in case you are wondering about the last two entries.  The Oscars couldn’t come up with enough nominations to fill their ballot this year, that’s why the last two slots are blank.  So why couldn’t the Oscars come up with enough bodies to fill the seats?  Covid gets blamed but the fact of the matter is that there were enough theatrical releases during the nominating period to fill the slate.

However, there weren't enough qualified films to do so. The standards for being nominated this year became a lot more stringent. Which is to say, Woke.

Of course, it's also because there isn't a single homogeneous market anymore. Hollywood is learning what happens when a host becomes too weak to support its parasites.

Time to pull out my Godfather saga and "Apocalypse Now" before they wake up...

Blogger Azimus March 23, 2021 7:31 PM

Last Best-Picture winner I saw, and actually enjoyed, was the King's Speech, 2010.

Saw the Artist the next year, thought it was dull.

I had no intention of watching Argo (a film produced and directed by the talentless hack Ben Affleck), and I never bothered with the Academy again. It wasn't even a woke thing, it was an inability to identify criteria for a good movie.

I expect, plus or minus a year or two, that is the course of waning influence of the Academy Awards with most people. Many here will be able to make significantly earlier claims, no doubt.

Blogger Felis Concolor March 23, 2021 7:35 PM

Okay, reading the list:

Uhm, when your name makes for a better board game than movie producer, you know the $#!+'s gone bad.

And - is that a pair of Kangz producing? I don't think I can read much further through this.

Mank(y); truth in advertising?

Promising - AAAAH, HAHAHAHAAAA!!! Just what did they promise you, young woman?

Yeah, these are great finalists - to usher in the finality we're all rooting for.

I mean I've seen trailers for NomadLand and it at least looked interesting, but more in the "I'd watch someone following these people around on YouTube.. for free... Or if any of them had a channel where they talked about living as travellers, they might be interesting people. But I wouldn't bother with this documentary in theaters."

Our town movie theater had been updating the posters even though they haven't been open most of the year. I remember posters for exactly one of those movies, Judas and the Black Messiah.

Given the theme and that there was *some* promotion for it, I'm guessing it wins.

Blogger flyingtiger March 23, 2021 7:43 PM

Judas and the Black messiah is about Fred Ham[ton and Mark Clark. It is a work of fiction.

It's funny English Patient is considered the end of the Oscars being year zero and then mentioned is Shakespeare In Love which truly was the last year of even considering watching 2 minutes of the Show ever again. It was a lot of fun back in the late 60s, 70s and 80's looking forward to seeing John Wayne, Kate Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Nicholson and Johnny Carson as emcee. Different world then and I have no doubt Hollywood is completely evil now. It always preyed on innocents but there were those who never accepted being intimidated and brought to heel such as Maureen O'Hara.

Blogger Doom March 23, 2021 8:09 PM

Which industry isn't learning that. But... they all knew. That was baked into the plan. Everyone in the middle, woke or not, thought they were part of the project. At this point, I don't think even the elites are being included.

Ever heard of a circle jerk? Well, this is like that, but... different. Think... a circle throat slit. If anyone is in the middle, I can't quite make out who they are. Everyone else is dead or dying, top to bottom it seems. Willingly or not.

Outdoor marquee at local movie theater north of Boston today:

Thanks for your patronage

This had been the premier movie theater on Boston's North Shore for over 70 years and is now being converted to an Amazon Delivery Station . This after last year they bought and converted the local Necco Candy Factory that had been in this same city for 133 years!
I would venture to guess that this was planned way before the fake pandemic started.

Blogger Gravy_Bear March 23, 2021 8:54 PM

"Judas and The Black Messiah". It's funny to see how the converged are pushing this nonsense that Jesus was Black. Seeing as though he was Jewish and born in a Roman province I highly doubt this narrative. And seeing as though King David was said to have red hair and Jesus comes from his bloodline this would indicate his skin was likely of a fairer complexion.

Blogger mushroom March 23, 2021 9:06 PM

Because my female friend tracks all the pop culture, I sat through Mank and Nomadland. Free on somebody else's streaming dime, they are worth every penny. And I would guess those are the best of the bunch. Gary Oldman is a good actor in a boring, pretentious story about which 99.999% of people could care less. Nomadland is predictable, depressing boomer-fodder: "Look how cool we still are." If you can identify with the characters in Nomadland, just kill your damn worthless self.

Blogger awildgoose March 23, 2021 9:13 PM

It's amazing that the controllers think they can successfully stage mass media and culture events when they are responsible for the atomization of mass culture in the West.

As for Shakespeare in Love, Harvey Weinstein paid good money for it to beat out Saving Private Ryan.

I am less bothered by that these days, given what has come to light about Tom Hanks.

@Matt- Sound of Metal has an intriguing premise, but it turns into “Deaf Culture” nonsense. Wherein they pretend deafness is just another way of life instead of a disability, and when the main character seeks a medical solution they pretend there’s something wrong with him. Like he’s a drug addict or something.

That is why it receives award attention. That, and the lead actor is non-white, of course.

Always annoyed me how men are supposed to be the neanderthals when it comes to romance, if not just dirt dicks outright, buts its really the women who eat up stories about adultery, torn-between-two-lovers, love triangles etc.

Blogger tublecane March 23, 2021 9:54 PM

@mushroom- I didn’t bother with “Mank” because years ago I saw a tv movie on the same subject, most re or less, called RKO-something. Which was mostly about the struggle between William Randolph Hearst and Orson Welles. The writer, played by John Malkovich, was merely a drunk Welles exploited.

David Fincher had a career making popular gross and dark serial killer thrillers. Netflix has the wrong idea, giving such people freedom to do expensive movies very few people asked for.

Justly maligned though Seinfeld has been on this site, it was on top of the English Patient Question back when.

The show did not take up the cause of regular folk. Whose reaction to this movie was either ignorance, indifference, or loathing. Instead, it depicted the main female character as surrounded by pro-English Patient peer-pressure. Which cornered her into unwanted repeat viewings. She was as the Last Sane Woman in an Insane World.

However, the real world was not so insane. English Patient-cultists were an extreme minority. Seinfeld writers lived in a different world than the public at large. Namely, the world of Hollywood. Where a bizarre thing like the English Patient winning Best Picture could happen

As I recall, the problem was bigger than the English Patient that year. Jerry Macguire was the only nominated movie with a star or popular following. Fargo has become something of a classic, but at the time it was a strange, indie sort of movie by the failed duo behind the Hudsucker Proxy. The other two nominees were foreign (English-language) films no one saw. And still haven’t seen.

Blogger Macs March 23, 2021 10:50 PM

Yep, haven't heard of a single one of these. The culture is dying, not only covergence but also the empty seats, empty stadiums, empty malls. Part of a culture is the feeling of group activity, even if you are streaming a game or whatever. It's lost it's spice for me. I went to a local sports bar I used to freauent today and saw my bar-maid for the first time in a mask. It breaks my heart to see this woman who could run a full house and charm you by name at the same time standing there muzzled going stir-crazy and broke. She is pissed and was openly talking shit about Daddy Cuomo. They better ease up before the weather turns...

Blogger GammaCatch March 23, 2021 11:34 PM

Ahh yes, The English Patient, where the messages/points are:

-Love gets you killed, but it does not matter anyway, because Nihilism.
-Weird throat fetish scene with Kristen Scott Thomas (who was hot stuff of course)
-Juliette Boniche (also a knockout back in the day) is a Strawng Waxmn who bravely has semi casual sex with a Siek (or was he Muslim? I think the was the other one)
-Dafoe gets his thumbs cut off in a torture scene I wish I could unsee.

And then Thomas dies and Finnis dies and Srawng Wxmn wanders off on her Post WWII spiritual journey with her exotic lover.

Letting the audience know that nothing matters in the strongest of terms and to please please remember the Wxmn and their cause.

A similar thing is happening to MMO games. The days of Big WoW will be looked back on.

Well at least Frances McDormand will finally win, after she works for someone besides the Coen Brothers (they occasionally win but are usually just nominated).

I can't hear the name Harvey Weinstein without picturing him on top of that little girl actor in those hunger games movies, or on top of Gretchen Mol.* Eventually every open-style arrangement meets a grosser-than-life monster who makes the fix so obvious that no one will doubt it again. "Shakespeare in Love" probably didn't invent the term 'Oscar Bait' but wow does it ever embody it.
* - the movie "Rounders" by miramax makes casting couches obvious, it is full of good actors, plus Gretchen Mol.

I think the oscars need to be encouraged towards more wokeness this year. I'll write a letter.

From my rural Boomer provincial chair there is little to nothing from the "mainstream" that appeals to straight white men and hence straight white men out of boredom and ease of access to the necessary tech have taken to producing videos of vastly more interesting topics than what the SJW claim is interesting.

@Doktor Jeep-

Big Hollywood does not command the attention it used to have. At least not in this country. However, in this context we’re only talking about 8 or 10 movies. I refuse to believe Hollywood is incapable of capturing mass audience attention for 20 hours per annum.

In fact, I know it can. Because it still does so with tv shows. Disney definitely attracted attention with the Mandalorian. That show is pure crap, of course. Except that it panders to fans of infants and Star Wars.

Point is it had the culture a-buzzing. That can happen with movies, too, if only they made Best Picture winners like Titanic or Rain Man again. (Not necessarily great movies, but extremely popular in their day.)

Blogger awildgoose March 24, 2021 7:39 AM

It wasn't even a woke thing, it was an inability to identify criteria for a good movie.

The Academy Awards were always a self-important industry circle jerk, and plenty of utterly forgettable garbage has won "Best" Picture dating all the way back to the beginning. It's just another propaganda victory that anyone ever thought the Oscars meant anything useful.

And of course, more Boomer mental masturbation with the rehash of the Chicago 7 story.

It was never meant to be that. It has always been what it is now, a bladder-bustingly long ad for the film companies. Please to be noting whose names are listed above: producers, people who otherwise nobody knows or cares about. That's who the original (((creators))) of the Oscars were really feting, because it was themselves.

As for "wokeness", Gentleman's Agreement won three of the bigger Oscars in 1947, including Best Picture and Best Director. Was that because it was so astonishingly good, or because it was an "expose of the horrors of anti-semitism' made by Marxists?

#47) Amen! Saving Private Ryan is an over rated film. It is the most realistic war film while being the least realistic; the most patriots while being the most anti-American film. There are many flaws in this film. The biggest flaw is Tom Hanks. He can't act. when ever he needs to show emotion, he just stares out in to space. I hated him since I saw that D&D movie in the 70s. I always wondered how many children he sacrificed to Baal to advance his career. The movie would have been better if they had a different lead.

I want to say I saw a K-pop awards ceremony where there were spotlight on the front row,and the rest was black. I'm not sure, but I think they faked an entire audience. They just made it all up, and broadcast it on youtube, like it was a real event. The following years, they panned across the now-there audience. It's possible to build it and then 'they' will come.

Like, a local state film association award ceremony, or a Christian films award ceremony. Or an alt-right ceremony. I want so say there are local versions of, like, the Grammys. They are basically a warehouse full of Party City tchochkes, a few people mostly working from home on spreadsheets, and then a rented hotel ballroom.
