"Marvel is very unhappy"

 EXTERIOR. Day. A Jurassic jungle.

Dinosaurs amble about doing nothing in particular. A light flashes across the sky. A few dinosaurs look up at the light, but most don't even notice. In the distance, somewhere far beyond the horizon, there is a faint booming sound.

MARVELSAURUS REX: What was that?

DEECEEATOPS: What was what?

DARKEQUESAURUS: Wha? I didn't see nothin'!

MARVELSAURUS REX: I just... I just have a very bad feeling about this.

A writer who is almost entirely unfamiliar with comics sent me the following email two days ago, which demonstrates that unlike the independent comic scene and its mainstream peers, Marvel is already beginning to grasp that Arkhaven's new digital comics site, Arktoons, poses a serious existential threat to the mainstream comics industry:

I was in [top ten US city by population] recently, and dropped into a comic book store to see what they looked like. I've never been into comics at all, so this is a new field to me.

The manager was having a discussion behind the cash register with two of his staff, and I couldn't help overhearing their conversation as I looked around.  Paraphrased, the manager was telling them that Marvel was "very unhappy" about the new Arktoons initiative, coming as it does on top of the Arkhaven Comics venture.  The money quote was something like, "They say the industry's overcrowded and underfunded enough as it is - we don't need more competition trying to muscle in and make everybody unprofitable".

Arktoons is already making an impact, along with Arkhaven.  Congratulations!

I'm genuinely impressed that someone at Marvel managed to figure out the situation so quickly. They realize that none of the market leaders will be able to even begin to compete with high-quality independent comics offering a 30x value proposition to their readers. It could take a year, it could take five years, but it's just a matter of the inevitable playing out over time now.

Meanwhile, DC is too busy slitting its own metaphorical wrists to even notice that its extinction event just took place.

New intel suggests DC Films President Walter Hamada has one job WarnerMedia expects him to accomplish: produce projects on the cheap to keep costs down. Sadly, this could mean the end of the Snyderverse.

A source close to Small Screen gave the site a full scoop that details Warner’s goals, Hamada’s task, and how JJ Abrams’ and his firm Bad Robot fits in to their plan. Long story short, Hamada is allegedly counting on Bad Robot to do most of the heavy lifting and take over operations of DC behind and in front of the camera.

“What I can tell you is that the last I heard, Walter wanted to hand over almost all the DC stuff over to BR [Bad Robot],” said the source.

JJ Abrams is a serial killer of popular franchises. It's at the point where I'm beginning to wonder if he is a secret agent in the employ of the Chinese movie industry on a mission to destroy the Hellmouth.

Impact Day was entirely successful, as Episode 1 of THE HAMMER OF FREEDOM eked out a surprise victory on the popularity front, beating out Episode 1 of MIDNIGHT'S WAR by just 2 likes. This was a bit of a surprise, to be honest, as prior to launch, most of the team felt that MW and AH would be the most popular, with GO MONSTER GO! having an outside shot at the Day One title simply by virtue of being created and written by The Legend.  And DEUS VULT more than held its own.

This just testifies to what a strong lineup is being featured on Wednesdays. But as you'll see later today, the Thursday lineup is very nearly as formidable. And if this inspires those of you with soft hearts to help those poor converged dinosaurs go extinct sooner rather than later, don't hesitate to subscribe to Arktoons.

So congratulations to Luciano and the Super Prumo team for winning Day One. As a consolation prize, however, MIDNIGHT'S WAR does already boast its own fan-created Heroforge version of Andre St. Jean, the iconic Knight of St. Michael and the Catacombs of Rome.

NOTE TO SUBSCRIBERS: You have absolutely no need to log in to the Arktoons site. The login there is for the creators and publishers. To read the comics, just click on them. When subscription-dependent features are added, such as comments and ratings, you will be informed.

What does JJ know about running a comics business?

Blogger VD April 29, 2021 9:27 AM

Read it again. He's not going to run a comics business. He's going to control the most lucrative part of the IP, which is the TV and films based on it.

Blogger tdcommenter April 29, 2021 9:38 AM

You obviously haven't seen what Marvel has unveiled to capture the hearts of fans new & old: "Marvel reveals more incredible X-Men fashion looks for the upcoming Hellfire Gala"

This will leave the yahtzees & ist-a-phobes speechless & trembling. From what, I will leave it up to the reader to decide.

Blogger Solon April 29, 2021 9:42 AM

I'm not a huge fan of comics in general, but I recognize that they are a major avenue of approach in the cultural war going on. As such, I just subscribed to Arktoons. Keep fighting the good fight, Vox and company. May the dinosaurs of the industry be buried in the dustbin of history where they belong.

Also, Midnight's War is just so darn cool. Worth the subscription price just by itself, before even considering the other pile of great content. Any plans for a film adaptation? :P Might actually make me consider going to a theater which I haven't done in literally years.

Abrams should bring Damon Lindelof on board. That'll show us.

Blogger Jab Burrwalky April 29, 2021 9:54 AM

HoF beat MW because killing globalist-commies > killing vampires. ;)

I kid, sort of, but both are gorgeous! And fresh. That's a huge sell for Arktoons, for me. It's not just "Batman's origin story. Again." I don't know the villains, I don't the characters. There's something new here to be experienced, not bogged down by any pre-existing expectations, or trying to shove new ideologies into old IPs.

Love this meteor strike. If I can find a way to free up a few extra bucks a month, I'll be subscribing at some level for sure.

Blogger infrequent April 29, 2021 10:06 AM

Ok, I'll be the village idiot. What's the difference in the subscription levels (bronze, gold, silver)? I can't tell from the product category / shopping cart site.

Blogger Hugh Tamlin April 29, 2021 10:08 AM

Excellent. On a superficial level more competition and a publisher for alternative work is great.
On the moral and political level, kicking Marvel and DC out of the ring with a million times less "strength" is both satisfying and applaudable.

I do however hope Arkhaven will take into consideration publishing even more alternative works. There's a lot of power in more risqué works, one Marvel and DC wouldn't touch with a radioactive pitchfork. They're missing out on a deliriously loyal consumer base and a connection to an invisible market.

JJ absolutely ruined Star Wars. I've been a huge Star Wars nerd since I was a little kid and couldn't have been more disappointed.

Arktoons is going to crush! It's so obvious that people are looking for a non-convergered source of entertainment.
Congratulations to the entire team. Looking forward to your undeniable success and some downright good entertainment.

A similar vulture outlook as was seen lately in the attempted football(soccer) Super League debacle. Squeezing the life out of something enjoyed by the masses for the sake of optimising the shekel-extraction mechanism to benefit a very small tribe of chosen operators.

Blogger B-Rex April 29, 2021 10:23 AM

I now want an Arkhaven comic about Noah-vox, who tries to herd all the publishing dinosaurs on the ark, but they just wont listen, and he is pestered by sniping eben-van-screwball saying his ark will be "way less racist" but it turns that dark is just a box with the words "cool-ass ark" on it

Blogger Damelon Brinn April 29, 2021 10:23 AM

JJ made one Star Wars movie that everyone raved about because it had action instead of people sitting on couches talking about trade agreements, though after some time passed more people seemed to realize it was a fluffy retread of the original with some grrl-power stuff bolted on. He made one Star Trek movie that was a decent dumb space adventure if you didn't think too hard, but had little in common with Star Trek other than the names on the characters. I think his company has been involved with some of the embarassing dren that's been put on TV with the Star Trek brand since then, too.

It's weird how, out of all the Jews in Hollywood, he's become the one Jew you get to helm your genre franchise. Guess everyone else in the inner circle sucks even harder.

I love how Benioff and Weiss teamed up to kill Game of Thrones, then walked out on a giant unspent end-of-series budget like they had better things to do. Losers. It reminds me of the mythical musical duel between Apollo and Pan.

Today's club of Rockefeller Hollywood directors is Failure, Inc. They should be booed and laughed at on the red carpet not feared and glorified. Creation should crown them with Ass's Ears Of Bad Taste to match their Donkey Snouts Of Mischief.

Blogger Sterling Pilgrim April 29, 2021 10:35 AM

JJ Abrams is the economical solution?
The incoherence of these people is monumental. They are only choosing to throw unleaded gasoline on themselves as opposed to premium.

“Hey, at least we are saving money,” said the executive through the flames.

Blogger Canadian Warlord April 29, 2021 10:46 AM

Do people need to be hired by China to wreck when you can track their career progress down at each step? It's just easier to hire the incompetent.

I went to see "Super 8," it was watchable. A little dark for children to watch - which made me realize it's 80s nostalgia was made to appeal to my distant fond memories. So... manipulative pandering.

It's not rare for creative types to make one good film, or to appear to make one good film. Richard Kelly made a good one, then made "Southland Tales" (pandering politicized garbage).

Contrasting the two careers, one of those guys was rewarded for continual diminished output - and one was punished for it.

@13 He's a hack who is less obsessed with putting social justice front & center.

He's like the joint that douses your burger with mystery sauce & puts on a side of fries topped with a gooey cheese like substance. But at least, he didn't swap your order with a ethically-sourced quinoa patty with a side of kale chips, then flip out when you send it back.

I'd say the only thing decent that Bad Robot has ever put out was Person of Interest. I mean, it had Jim Caviezel as the lead, and that man dead a hell of a job as Christ for Mel Gibson.

If anything, JJ is the poster boy for how NOT to handle any sort of lucrative IP. EVER. Not that DC's been all that lucrative since Batman and Robin. It took Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy to get things back to even, and then Zack Snyder showed up (though I will say, his version of Justice League is miles better than whatever Joss Whedon crapped out for Warner to make the release date).

I'm surprised it took time. I saw that upon first viewing. My assessment? I could get the same experience by watching A New Hope and having a feminist whine in my ear the whole time.

Blogger Dos Voltz April 29, 2021 11:41 AM

This story of Marvel knowing of their impending doom due to better and fresher competition reminds me of the death (almost overnight) of hair-metal and glam metal in the 90s. Grunge was emerging with Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, (and others)

Money quote from Tommy Lee after being informed his tour was scaling down YET AGAIN, (from 20 semi-trucks to 3? ish) because no one was buying tickets - throwing furniture, trashing his dressing room: "These fucking flannel bands are killing us!"

Looks like Arktoons is rockin it like a flannel band.

Yes, we're planning to combine the digital comics with 150-page omnibuses. We don't see much point in the 20-page singles.

Blogger Cappuccinobear April 29, 2021 12:10 PM

To be honest, Superman was always my favorite comic character. It's both sad and freeing to realize that Superman as I now see him, is literally a zombie in a zombie franchise. I have already mourned the loss and put the kryptonite bullet in his head.
As for marvel, eh.
I'm very happy to have Arktoons, I've subscribed, and I support those who demand and supply the good the true and the beautiful.

Be specific, as risqué often = degraded = carnal with little Beauty or Truth. Don't think you can expect much.

Ha! I was just at the local comic store an hour ago buying bags and boards (I'm a reseller).

The couple that runs the place are typical SJW types, guy looks like he still lives at home and has pedo face, his girl is a purple-haired tattooed land whale. When I was checking out I asked what they thought of Arktoons. Neither seemed to know what I was talking about, so I told them to look it up. At first they both seemed intrigued, but as I watched them scroll down in the reflection of his glasses I could tell by their faces they weren't happy at all. He got even paler, she went red in the face and was shaking with rage. It was glorious to behold! Probably won't be allowed in there anymore but it was so worth it. LOL!

Keep up the good work, it really is making an immediate impact.

Blogger tuberman April 29, 2021 1:55 PM

"The Hammer of Freedom" is a direct attack on Socialism, and that's why it comes out of the gate fast. People will want more direct political attacks of all the Evil people in spite of what the ComicGate people had spewed. Good stories too, but sometimes naked attacks on the weird, the cucks, globalists, and all the SJW pervs.

Rebel is cool for example, as she as an icon 'Rebel,' and is an in-your-face reply to all the purple hair, black wearing morons. Beyond being sexy looking.

really glad to hear the plans for the omnibuses; I agree and think the single issue comic is rather dead; the grpahic novel/onibus, ad free and full or extra art, was always nicer on the shelf anyway

Blogger Pathfinderlight April 29, 2021 6:24 PM

The train of constant reboots out there now is due to the terrible creative intelligence of the people being picked to run the franchises. Rebooting removes a lot of the history canon of the material you're working with.

Canon is often misunderstood by media owners as being dictated by them...this isn't really true. Canon is part of the contract between viewers of a work and its creators, listing the rules of the fictional universe. It's a critical component of suspension of disbelief. Break canon too many times, and your audience won't trust you with their expectations again.

Reboots are essentially explicit canon breaks. While not usually deal-breaking in themselves, creators get limited number of these, AND they stack with other canon breaking choices and mistakes. If a creator wants to justify a reboot to an audience, they need to tell a lot of interesting story because of it. If not, the audience will decide following along isn't worth it.

Blogger MrNiceguy April 29, 2021 7:05 PM

I'll second this suggestion. I backed AH in digital, AH:Q in digital first and upgraded to physical on the replatform. But my biggest and most enjoyed comic purchase was springing for the hardbacks on the Earthworm Jim crowdfund.

Loving Arktoons, by the way. Especially Hammer of Freedom. Haven't started Go Monster, Go yet, but looking forward. Already read Midnight's War on webtoons, but will likely go through it again. Holding off on Deus Vult - got in on the crowdfund and I'm waiting till I can read the whole digital version at once.

Blogger eclecticme April 29, 2021 8:26 PM

I have not been a comics fan since I was a kid but I will give these a try. I went with my son to some avengers movie maybe a year ago. Every minute was painful. No coherent plot I could make out. Just scenes strung together.

Years ago I liked the graphic novel for The Ring Cycle. Some nudity, in case that matters. By Gil Kane? Very expensive now. $50 for all in one book. I have the four separate books.

Watching the remake of Breathless with Richard Gere made want to read The Silver Surfer.

Maybe he's just a Jew, and they can't help but further the nexus of Greed/Subversion that characterizes their entire history.

Blogger Gallant April 29, 2021 10:54 PM

I always figured the victory to be when you were able to build the ability to produce comic books, enter the industry, and sustain the business. The rest is a happy bonus; and maybe inevitable based on how you planned it out. . .

Grats Arkhaven

Blogger CostelloM April 30, 2021 5:38 AM

"we don't need more competition trying to muscle in and make everybody unprofitable" No no no sir you don't understand this at all... Arktoons isn't here to compete with you, it's here to DESTROY you. To satiate itself with the flesh of your bleeding carcus. This isn't competition anymore than a honey badger competes with a cape cobra. This is predation plain and simple and that sound you hear is the sound of death as he approaches. Happy to clear that up for you sir, good day.

Blogger Beery Swine April 30, 2021 9:10 AM

That's legit the funniest thing I've read in a week. Just imagine the mindset of someone who thinks another company that's independent is only there to make every other company in the same business "unprofitable".

He's simply a typical Jew in a position of power going through the standard process of corrupting/exploiting/extracting and then moving onto greener pastures as per their nomadic nature.

The fact that his actions result in net benefit for the Chinese movie industry is a happy coincidence.
