Scrabble converges

There is literally no activity or organization that will not be converged, unless it actively and aggressively resists convergence:

Expert Scrabble players have blasted the game's owner as 'virtue signalling' and 'woke' after it banned 400 derogatory terms as playable moves.

Racial slurs including the 'n-word', insults against the elderly and homophobic terms were removed from Scrabble's official online words list following worldwide anti-racism protests in the wake of the death of American George Floyd.

Scrabble's owner Mattel said it made the change to make it more relevant culturally following global unrest last year.

But Scrabble grandmaster David Webb said the move has been interpreted as 'virtue signalling'.

Offensive terms including the 'n-word' were removed from Scrabble's official online words list following worldwide anti-racism protests in the wake of the death of American George Floyd.

The exact list of banned words has not been released.

Of course it hasn't. The objective is to be able to administer the rules on a subjective basis, thereby granting the converged authority more power and flexibility while allowing them to avoid ever being held accountable to an objective standard.

The Wayback Machine is golden. You can use the old Scrabble dictionary online if you want.

Forget the comment about the dictionary, in in the wayback machine it only points you to the live app.

Blogger Desillusionerad April 17, 2021 6:44 AM

Indeed - after all it wouldn't be very good for them if Special term X wasn't on the list, could get them into trouble.
Or worse what if word Y was on the list, but that made them look completely silly.
No arbitrary autocracy is clearly the way forward. It has nice temporal qualities too, as one can insist a word always has been banned even if they actually decided it was last week.

Blogger Shane Bradman April 17, 2021 6:52 AM

I stopped caring about Scrabble's official list of words once they started allowing foreign words like "Xi". If it's not an English word that you can find in a pre-1950 dictionary, you're not allowed to play it.

Blogger bramley bramley bramley April 17, 2021 7:03 AM

Knock knock.

Allo sir, i hear you've been hosting scrabble games which allow the scoring of proscribed words. I'm afraid you'll have to accompany me to the station to answer some questions...

So censoring the dictionary is now the 'in' thing....

Blogger Mr.MantraMan April 17, 2021 7:13 AM

Easy win for the gals and gammas of Mattel/Scrabble, they will dunk on the no social game spergs and autists like Michael Jordon when he had hair dunking on a 8th grade basketball team. Probably even as we speak one of those autists is crafting a super special essay of the finest detail of impeccable logic and stuff that will absolutely prove to the liberals and normies the correctness of the smart ones. Or a conservative will get mad and call them "hypocrites", same difference, same results.

Conservatives are not the Left's enemies they are the Left's stooges or bowling pins for better visuals. Write your own rules and leave out any and all references to what the gals and gammas "protect."

I hope they didn't ban "ginger".. what else are you gonna do when you get "n", "i", "g", "g", "e" and "r"?

Blogger Cappuccinobear April 17, 2021 7:33 AM

How many points is the word "heteronormative" worth?

Blogger The Masked Menace April 17, 2021 7:45 AM

Hmm... since language is a social construct and everything is now subjective to the individual feelings of the "oppressed" isn't the "correct" spelling of any word really subjective to the "speller"? And wouldn't this make a game like Scabble superfluous?

If Mattel truly wants to be culturally relevant they should simply withdraw the game completely.

Blogger Glen Sprigg April 17, 2021 7:49 AM

Fortunately, we have plenty of dictionaries to use as 'official' word lists. Scrabble doesn't have authority over the English language, or my use of it.

>Crank Floyd
>"American"

This really gets to me, and I'm Irish. Then again, I am Irish, so that isn't that surprising, I suppose.

Say, how many surnames were removed from the list? Just a few, I'd imagine? Some even very dirty ones with four letters.

Or does Scrabble forbid us from spelling out surnames altogether?

Blogger dienw April 17, 2021 9:10 AM

I use a 1973 Websters' College Dictionary; it limits the available words: you have to have a reasonable concept of words in use at the time of the dictionary's publishing;enhances bluffing and challenging is riskier; but so is losing the gambit. Unfortunately, I don't own the dictionary; it is the hands of my OCD competitor who has made extensive lists of three to four letter words; fortunately, I have a larger vocabulary.
After a certain point Scrabble takes on elements of GO and other strategy games.

Blogger Taqiyyotomist April 17, 2021 9:13 AM

Any quick read of critical race theory shows that there is absolutely zero logic and "critical thinking". The only thing it's critical of is whitey. It's sole objective is to rend and dismember every shred of Western Civilization. It seems like it's only going to addressed in the coming civil war.

Blogger M In The 517 April 17, 2021 11:11 AM

I'm a halfway decent Scrabble player, my rating on the old app/site was typically in the low-mid 1800s. 0.6 bingos per game. That's not huge, but still above average.

Well at least that's what I was before Scrabble shut down the old app and moved everyone over to sCrAbBlEcHaLlEnGe or whatever the fuck it is now.

Basically, they Candy Crushed the whole thing up to 11.

Hard pass.

It's been a while since I've played Lexulous, also. But at least that is a more straightforward app.

Blogger DonReynolds April 17, 2021 11:17 AM

Of course, this is silly and wrongheaded... particularly in the case of those racial slurs words that reflect badly on a race or ethnicity BUT are in common everyday use by the same people. The N-word is a perfect example. Rap artists and Negro comedians cannot live without it.... constantly.... but if the speaker is white, only then it becomes a racial slur. The same would be true of words that are commonly known as obscene. Take those words away, and you just ripped half of what some people say every day. So banning words for everybody is simply not going to work.

Another suggestion.... have Scrabble games color coded by race. Yes, have a White Scrabble, a Black Scrabble, a Red Scrabble, a Brown Scrabble, and a Yellow Scrabble. Have separate advisory committees put impolite or obscene words on their own lists for their own game. Now everyone can be happy.

Is it still too early to start the discussions and negotiations for a separate and independent black homeland in North America? It would not cost but a few states. It might even be possible to land it in Mexico or Canada or both. That would seem better than all-season and year-round rioting over street crime. In this country, we are in pursuit of happiness.

Blogger JaimeInTexas April 17, 2021 11:34 AM

Given the history of the English language, where words were formed by blending, for example female, expect that n-word will become enword and become a banned word itself.
Language is God's wonderful gift of communication ... and must also be corrupted by the evil one. But, every discordant note is worked into the composition by and for the composer.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan April 17, 2021 11:46 AM

"Boomer" should be a triple value play. As for the rest of the protected classes better to ban any mention of them in any fashion so ban words like feminist, Hebrew, African, gay, ect, ect.

Blogger Ozymandius April 17, 2021 12:08 PM

As in white or saltine? In either case I'll bet no, it will not be banned. Offending whitey (aka dismantling Whiteness) is encouraged.

The word "chink" however, may very well be banned. Those deciding on it's ban, are unlikely to ever have use for armor unless it's worn by the police or military they despise until they are needed to protect them. And, everyone knows "armor" hearkens back to the days of knights in armor and is another reflection of white supremacy and colonialism.

WTF kind of world are we living in?!

A black homeland in the United States was tried under Jim Crow and found to be racist. Only the Northern method of keeping blacks out by keeping them poor is allowed in this country, and even then only if you're the right type of white person.

Blogger Shimshon April 17, 2021 1:18 PM

Scrabble has been converged in one way or another for a long time. Has anyone compared recent official dictionaries to editions from the 1970s or 1980s? Just the sheer number of Yiddishisms added since then was very noticeable. Among many signs of the deterioration of the English language.

Blogger Azure Amaranthine April 17, 2021 1:40 PM

Blogger The Pitchfork Rebel April 17, 2021 2:55 PM

Mattel has been woke for a long time.

It really took off during the short stay of Margo Georgiadis, who was brought on as CEO for this:

"a fresh perspective on enterprise alignment and a female voice at the helm does reinvigorate the potential for a dramatic modernization of the Mattel operating model"

She left for the top job at Ancestry.com-because we have more of a past than a future.

It's reached full effect under the reign of Ynon Kreiz (an "American-Israeli" business man according Wikipedia, Infogalactic puts it in proper order)

https://infogalactic.com/info/Ynon_Kreiz

Mattel has a 46ish stock price in early 2014, and dropped to under 8 last year. Like most stocks, it's gone up post panicdemic, to the low 20's. It closed at 20.50 yesterday.

So, you are a virtue signaling, woke capital toy and multi-player board game store in a time of plummeting birth rates and individual electronic device absorption, what a bright future you have, Mattel (as long as you quit making Barbie and work on diversions for dementia patients).

The problem with Scrabble, is that most phrases from the racial slur database are longer than 7 letters.
