DC goes webtoons

In a manner of speaking. Now we have a pretty good idea of how the dinosaurs are going to approach the digital comics space.

Korean online giant Kakao Entertainment has signed definitive agreements to acquire two American storytelling platforms, Tapas Media, Inc and Radish Media, Inc. The acquisitions are intended to pave the way for Kakao Entertainment to expand its original content business in North America and other English-speaking regions.

Tapas is known for its mobile comic book content and webtoons has been valued at $150 million. Radish Media, mobile fiction platform and app has been valued at $440 million. That's a total of $590 million, for online comic books and stuff.

Kakao Entertainment became a significant stakeholder of Tapas last November and has since been distributing the company's blockbuster webtoons, such as A Business Proposal, Space Sweepers, The Uncanny Counter, and Navillera through the Tapas platform, which saw sales increase five times last year. They recently hired former DC Comics Executive Editor Michele R. Wells as Chief Content Officer and are currently looking for a new Editor-In-Chief.

And at the same time, Sandy Resnick, who was also made redundant by DC Comics last year, as  International Publishing, Ad Sales & Custom Creative Studio. And he has been talking about what he worked on before he was left. He writes;

Some of the last partnerships I worked on at DC involve webtoons. While most of those are for original webtoon series in Korea and the U.S., we also arranged for Sigongsa to reformat select U.S. comics into webtoons. We started producing promotional webtoons in 2017, which were well received by younger fans who had never picked up a graphic novel. Now, DC webtoons have finally started running as regular features on KakaoPage.

I had a look at the system. It's not as good technologically as Webtoons, in my opinion, with even lower resolution. It's also full of the usual badly-drawn romance stuff, although this appears more to be oriented toward women and less "I'm so lonely and gay" than Webtoons.

What's interesting is that Seasons has more views after two weeks on Arktoons than it gathered in two years on Webtoons. So, all in all, it appears Arkhaven is moving in the right direction at the right time and that most independent creators will find it advantageous to utilize Arktoons rather than Webtoons.

And in other Arkhaven news, we have a new illustrator on Alt-Hero for Issue #9 now that Cliff Cosmic is focused on Shade. Here is an example of illustrator Tony Hazard's take on Captain Europa and Dynamique.

Was curious how much direction and freedom you give the illustrators of the comics? Especially if it is a new comic and art hasn't been done for it before.

My interest in Seasons is due to waiting for the red pill to drop.

It's also well done.

As Ya Boi Zack put it, there are some comics where you could replace every word balloon with the word "gay" & not notice the difference.

All the new Marvel & DC aspire to be Immersion & all dialogue are the Vagina Monologues.

Alt Hero looks like it's in good hands.

One of the big advantages of the web comic format is that it massively saves time over manga. It's very efficient to make.
It's a shame to lose the art of paneling, but working artists 16 hours a day 7 days a week is brutal. I appreciate web comics as a complement to manga rather than a replacement. I won't be spending a second of my time using the trashy DC version with AIDS Superman and diabetic Lois Lane, arktoons has better stories.

The important questions, when working out- aspire to her heinie, or the girl in the sea shanty twitter post from Elon Musk?

Growing & winning!

Getting a 'crying freeman' or general 80's manga vibe from that panel, nice.

That looks great.

"Im so lonely and gay" wow spot on. I loved webtoons in the 2010 timeframe. Especially Tower of God, Noblesse and God of Highschool. But now everything is escapism harems aimed at incels.

I've already switched to Arkhaven. Seeing a ToB in comic is awesome.

Chang Kim actually reminds of you a bit. Dudes got his hands in everything these days.

"although this appears more to be oriented toward women and less "I'm so lonely and gay" than Webtoons."

With Webtoons, that was only a difference of time:

1. Lean toward women since they're a huge consumer block, and possibly the largest single consumer category -- see trashy "romance" novels in literature if you doubt that.

2. Lose normal men/boys because of female tilt.

3. Acquire the gay. Because the perverted teenage girls like it, and lonely older women are invested in acting like or pretending to be teenage girls, and both fold easily to social pressure, so they won't say anything even if they don't like it.

4. REALLY acquire the gay. The gay drives out most of the women who aren't perverted teenage girls and/or hardcore SJWs. Even the hardcore SJWs aren't buying any of it or supporting the business at this point, they're just there to blast random passers-by, with their fetid breath and random keening, in attempts to boost their social status. Welcome to Webtoons.

The Asian markets are still keeping the gay in the closet more, but IMO that's a lot less because of their societal strengths (by proclivity, they're as often as not even worse than us in this area) and a lot more because they just haven't gotten along to our stage of degeneracy yet.

"I'm so lonely and gay."

I chuckled hard. lol

That's some serious, fantastic artwork.

I like the new Alt Hero design.

Arkhaven’s artists are excellent. Cliff’s art served the early issues of Alt-hero and it was great seeing him grow with every new issue. But holy cow is Tony Hazard also good.

Is the Legend bringing this quality in? Other networking? Cold solicitations? Will you be releasing “How to Draw the Arkhaven Way” to show the little up-and-comers and smaller competition like DC & Marvel how to do comics right?

"They recently hired former DC Comics Executive Editor Michele R. Wells as Chief Content Officer and are currently looking for a new Editor-In-Chief." When your failure is baked in from the start. What's the over/under on how many diversity hires she makes?

Ps... Dynamiques superass as compared to "I Am the Potota Shaped Turd Expelled From Starfire" Which one is a teenager gonna wanna look at?

Blogger Ariadne Umbrella May 12, 2021 9:56 PM

Nostromo, it's the difference between "buns of steel" old school 80s, or kettlebells. It's work, either way.

I'm liking the naughty girl in long stockings from the Elon Musk Sea Shanty vs getting work done tweet. That's " Buns of Steel" backside.

This girl, eh, kettlebells/ Kardashians. Not quite the bicycle seat I like, but maybe it's the fashion now?

Already hooked on Arktoons. May not sound like much among this crowd, but I've only bought one comic since the early 90s (Watchmen). So there's something right about this formula. Love the old timey "Frogmen" and the plastic guy, as well as the newer stories. Comics always used to take up space (not as much as EGR/CGR and CGW) so it's refreshing to revisit using this fancy technology.

Planning on buying for the nephew, though that's a flimsy excuse to read them myself. It'll have to do.

That looks great. Howard Chaykin meets Jae Lee on art. Excellent.

Blogger Revelation Means Hope May 13, 2021 5:19 PM

Good heavens. Is Dynamique suddenly an African American crossed with a Brazilian?

I think her thighs ate her glutes. Except her butt is still double wide.

Those comments aside, the shading and detail, this looks fantastic!
