Leaving Los Angeles

The Golden Age of the Golden State is long over:

California's population fell by more than 182,000 last year, the first yearly loss ever recorded for the nation's most populous state. The decline halted a growth streak dating to its founding in 1850 on the heels of a gold rush that prompted a flood of people to seek their fortune in the West.

The figures released Friday followed last week's announcement from the U.S. Census Bureau that California would lose a congressional seat for the first time because it grew more slowly than other states over the past decade. Still, California's population of just under 39.5 million and soon-to-be 52-member congressional delegation remain by far the largest.

California's population has surged and slowed in the decades since its founding, with notable increases following World War II and the tech boom of the 1980s and '90s that put Silicon Valley on the map.

In recent years, more people have left California for other states than have moved there, a trend Republicans say is a result of the state's high taxes and progressive politics. The average sale price of a single-family home in California hit a record $758,990 in March, a 23.9% increase from a year ago.

"The numbers don't lie. People are leaving our state because it's not affordable to live here," tweeted Kevin Faulconer, the former mayor of San Diego and one of the Republican candidates hoping to unseat Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom in this year's expected recall election.

But the Newsom administration says California's population decline is an outlier, blaming it on the coronavirus pandemic that turned everything upside down in 2020. In a normal year, California might have between 140,000 and 150,000 people move in from other countries. In 2020, it was just 29,000 people — a direct impact, state officials say, of the Trump administration halting new visas for much of the year.

It's a good test for how magic the dirt of California is. I, for one, tend to suspect that no one will be wishing they could all be California girls in 2050.

Right...it's just because of cv19...I guess all those ex Californians in TX and AZ don't count. It's been happening since early 2000s.

Meh, just count illegals as citizens. That will erase that loss and then some. If they already do that? Import more.

Blogger Reziac May 11, 2021 12:37 PM

And that's even though they counted a good ten million illegal aliens. (The official number, last I paid attention, was 3M, and we know to multiply that by 3, so...)

"In a normal year, California might have between 140,000 and 150,000 people move in from other countries. In 2020, it was just 29,000 people"

That really just represents the drop in illegal aliens sneaking across the border (thanks to Trump's Wall, which had a huge impact), and is not significant compared to the productive business and trades types who took their tax dollars to other states.

I expect CA will soon attempt to float a "wealth tax" at the legislative level, since it's twice failed to get on the ballot as an "initiative". The last effort (which only failed on a technicality) would have stripped half the wealth of anyone leaving the state with more than $5M in assets, and imposed a one-time tax of 50% on all major real estate.

"It's Trump's fault we couldn't bring in as many foreigners as before for one year to artificially pump up our congressional representation" is trivially true but also incredibly revealing that they're using it as their excuse. Not sure how you'd prove it but I wonder if CA pumps up inflows when it's census time.

Are the dems of California making room for their Chinese overlords to move in? Or for their housekeepers children perhaps?

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling May 11, 2021 1:02 PM

Here's a claim the Census numbers were significantly altered after "Biden" became President. So California probably lost even more people compared to 2010.

Blogger Doktor Jeep May 11, 2021 1:06 PM

The best way to send the illegals home would be to sour the milk.
Heck even the legals, many who own the homes still of deceased parents, will GTFO.
Only Puerto Ricans and Mexicans will stick around because no matter how bad America gets, those shit holes manage to be worse.

The only "magic" in CA dirt is Valley Fever.

Huge swathes of California, including pretty much all the south Valley, is already Mexico, with the concomitant failing infrastructure, poor public health, and crime. It won't be long before the entire state, kept functional by one of the largest man-made river systems ever built, is dying of thirst, hunger, and all those 19th century disease that grow in untreated sewage. Maybe they'll get a wild earthquake ride to kick off the fun as a bonus.

Blogger jijijeac May 11, 2021 1:16 PM

california hasn't been a us state since like 30 years ago. nowadays its just a region of the globalist regime who relies on other us states for food and exports. the sooner they get kicked out of the union the better. they don't embody any of the initial values of the union anyway.

Blogger FALPhil May 11, 2021 1:36 PM

The problem comes in the states to which the ex-Californios. They leave California, for whatever reason, but they bring their California attitudes, preferences, and values with them. I saw this happen in the '90s in Colorado. They turned a beautiful canvas of a state into poster art.

It's far worse than a loss of 182,000 would imply... The loss is net. Who knows what the gross loss is, but chances are pretty good they're all middle-class employed professionals, and they are being replaced by… something decidedly less economically productive...

What is terrifying is that all of the ex-pat Californians fleeing are coming to states like Idaho (in record number), Utah, Texas and Florida.

Unfortunately, many of them bring their filthy, corrupt and cancerous ideologies along with them - “It’ll work THIS time!”

Inflows have been pumped since forever.

Don't forget a considerable portion of H1-B's since the 1990's came to California as well. Many of whom have since obtained green cards and US citizenship, and have since sponsored their families via chain migration. I spoke with a census taker who was working in the Warner Center area last year. He said he knew there were a lot of dot Indians, but he was still taken aback at just how numerous they are at least in that suburb.

Don't forget California has sent refugees to other states for a few decades. Many of these were the classic clueless libtards who voted for the conditions they fled, yet failed to make that connection. So they voted the same way in Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, even Idaho, give that state a few more years.

If it wasn't for the aliens, the state would have experienced the drop a lot sooner. Someone who worked outside for the phone company awhile back told me he thought the actual numbers of illegals was much higher than the public numbers. I said why not claim those illegals for the census? He said if the actual numbers were made public, the people would not tolerate it. Remember this state passed Prop 187 in 1994 but the state supreme court killed it and that there was the end of representative democracy in the state. But the memory was still fresh at the time we had that conversation.

The sentiment that favored 187 never really went away. It's just unprintable, that's all, but it's still there. It's just that the uni-party that rules the state has essentially thrown caution to the wind so now the reaction recall for Newsom. But they stuck that tranny in there who has definitely taken the ticket and no one else has the notoriety or the name recognition the tranny does. Except maybe Cernovich, but I think Cernovich will pass though I think he might have a chance with his command of social media.

It's not as if the California government didn't see this coming. Every few years there's an initiative on the ballot to kill Prop 13. Or for more bonds. Which are really just another grift. The state used to chase pensions for taxes after they left the state. Now it's exit taxes and wealth taxes.

Blogger bobby May 11, 2021 2:31 PM

I'm pushing to reverse this trend, by recommending to all local homeless people that the wonderful climate of California means they'll always be comfortable.

Blogger DadOfTen May 11, 2021 2:31 PM

I published the 1860 California Census Index decades ago. They had census takers putting down the names of everyone on ferries as they went to work, and the Chinese were counted as many times as possible. There was page after page of identical Chinese names. I wonder how many there really were in California in 1860? Some things don't change.

If you want to have fun, go read the 1910 Census where they were taking names on the Navajo or other Indian reservation. They were given the "english translation" of a lot of names and they were obviously playing with census takers. Either that or their name really was "He-Who-Poops-In-Bucket."

Blogger Dafo May 11, 2021 3:40 PM

Have seen many vids on YouTube concerning the extremely high and growing number of homeless in California. Tent after tent after tent lining the pavements.

As William Playfair noted: the general conclusion is that wealth and power have never been long permanent in any place, and that they travel the earth something like a caravan of merchants. When they arrive all is green and fresh, whilst there, all is bustle and abundance and, when gone, everything is left trampled down, barren and bare.

The caravan of merchants has departed California, indeed the entire West.

I wish I could put up a wall between the left coast and the rest of the country. All those liberal idiots are moving out because of the leftist economic and social policies that destroyed their own states, yet they'll just bring it to the other states they move to. I don't want them here or anywhere. They do nothing but destroy. Sometimes I think they should be harassed and intimidated and denied any opportunities to pressure them to go back to their own leftist shitholes and fix those states. Maybe then they'll learn about the consequences of their ideologies.

Another fiery, but peaceful political statement:

"An LAPD spokesperson confirmed to Breitbart News that the attack took place at around 12:55 a.m. Sunday morning. The suspect threw a glass bottle containing a flammable liquid at the station’s front window. The act was witnessed by multiple officers who went in pursuit of the attacker.

LAPD has identified the suspect as Jonathan Rosin, 24, a resident of L.A. No physical description of the suspect was available. The spokesperson said it was unknown if anyone was hurt in the incident."

I've been to Skid Row in LA. 70,000 people living on the streets. That as large as a medium sized city. Yeah, it's worse than you can imagine. A good friend's niece became addicted to Meth. Months later they found her decomposed body laying across a trail connecting a homeless camp in the hills north of LA to a city in the San Fernando Valley. Every day for months dozens of homeless people used the trail, and stepped over her body going to and from the camp. Same friend works for Orange County just south of LA. The county purchased a city block in one of the beach cities and created apartments for the homeless a couple blocks from the beach. They stand empty because the only stipulation for moving in is no drinking or drugs. You have to be clean and sober to live there. No takers. No s%*t the population in Cali is shrinking. I saw the writing on the wall four years ago and got my family out of there and ensconced in the Mountain Redoubt in the American West.

Blogger RobbyIlluminknotty May 11, 2021 8:32 PM

That 180k is only the net loss. The actually flight from California is ten to twenty times greater. Millions of working middle-class Californians have fled the state over the past decade, to be replaced by immigrants. Most of those immigrants are poor and poorly educated, many illegal, dependent upon the social welfare system for support, thereby adding to the tax burden on the remaining citizens. Another small but culturally significant group moving to California is the indigent, psychotic, drug addicts, who move there for the warm weather that allows them to lie drugged-out on the street without dying from exposure. California literally stinks from human feces.

Blogger Ingemar May 11, 2021 8:42 PM

Someone here pointed out that Mexicans are having second thoughts coming here.

One thing that discourages settlement is culture. Mexicans don't want their sons becoming troons/fags or their daughters as ball busting feminazis.

The other thing is prohibitive COL. Sure Mexicans can live eight to a one bedroom apartment, but they can do that in Mexico for much cheaper.

Imagine an American state being such a shithole that not even Mexicans want to come!

City Hall in Austin is surrounded by the tents of the homeless. The lakeside walkway has tents. The river has tents beside it. The city just voted in a "no tents" policy with 90 days to implement.

The tents are on one side of a four lane road beside the most photogenic part of the city, right next to the river going through the center of town. The river is named after a President's wife. On the other side of the road is the Google skyscraper and other high tech firms.

We went to dinner Sunday night, dining out under the stars to celebrate. The flamboyantly gay, tattooed waiter stood between us and a manager telling a homeless man to leave. The shirtless, heavily tattooed homeless man had walked onto the patio and was eating leftovers at a recently abandoned table. To go inside, one passed a table full of chubby Asian programmers with company tee-shirts loudly talking about their weekend "hacking."

Of all of this, only the failed vegetarian gay waiter is the core Austin. He moved here from a small town in Texas. The rest is some horrifying imposition, including the aggressively ugly town hall.

They can't be pressured to do anything which isn't convenient in the short term, because they lack both foresight and integrity. Therefore, even if you could pressure them to go back, the lack of integrity precludes fixing anything.

The best policy is to harass them until they leave. Having to refill all 4 tires of a car every morning can become tiresome very quickly.
